We consider the general question of estimating decay of correlations for non-uniformly expanding maps, for classes of observables which are much larger than the usual class of Holder continuous functions. Our results give new estimates for many non-uniformly expanding systems, including Manneville-Pomeau maps, many one-dimensional systems with critical points, and Viana maps. In many situations, we also obtain a Central Limit Theorem for a much larger class of observables than usual.
Our main tool is an extension of the coupling method introduced by L.-S. Young for estimating rates of mixing on certain non-uniformly expanding tower maps.
An invertible dynamical system with some hyperbolic structure is considered. Upper estimates for the correlations of continuous observables is given in terms of modulus of continuity. The result is applied to certain Hénon maps and Solenoid maps with intermittency.
We establish upper bounds on the rate of decay of correlations of tower systems with summable variation of the Jacobian and integrable return time. That is, we consider situations in which the Jacobian is not Holder and the return time is only subexponentially decaying. We obtain a subexponential bound on the correlations, which is essentially the slowest of the decays of the variation of the Jacobian and of the return time.
There is a wealth of results in the literature on the thermodynamic formalism for potentials that are, in some sense, "hyperbolic". We show that for a sufficiently regular one-dimensional map satisfying a weak hyperbolicity assumption, every Holder continuous potential is hyperbolic. A sample consequence is the absence of phase transitions: The pressure function is real analytic on the space of Holder continuous functions. Another consequence is that every Holder continuous potential has a unique equilibrium state, and that this measure has exponential decay of correlations.
We prove exponential correlation decay in dispersing billiard flows on the 2-torus assuming finite horizon and lack of corner points. With applications aimed at describing heat conduction, the highly singular initial measures are concentrated here on 1-dimensional submanifolds (given by standard pairs) and the observables are supposed to satisfy a generalized Hölder continuity property. The result is based on the exponential correlation decay bound of Baladi, Demers and Liverani obtained recentlyfor Hölder continuous observables in these billiards. The model dependence of the bounds is also di…
We consider perturbations of interval maps with indifferent fixed points, which we refer to as wobbly interval intermittent maps, for which stable laws for general Hölder observables fail. We obtain limit laws for such maps and Hölder observables. These limit laws are similar to the classical semistable laws previously established for random processes, but certain limitations imposed by the current dynamical set up are reflected in the main result. One of the considered examples is an interval map with a countable number of discontinuities, and to analyse it we need to construct a Markov/Young…
We prove exponential estimates for plurisubharmonic functions with respect to Monge-Ampere measures with Holder continuous potential. As an application, we obtain several stochastic properties for the equilibrium measures associated to holomorphic maps on projective spaces. More precisely, we prove the exponential decay of correlations, the central limit theorem for general d.s.h. observables, and the large deviations theorem for bounded d.s.h. observables and Holder continuous observables.
We study rates of mixing for small random perturbations of one dimensional Lorenz maps. Using a random tower construction, we prove that, for Holder observables, the random system admits exponential rates of quenched correlation decay.
We study decay of correlations, the asymptotic distribution of hitting times and fluctuations of the return times for a robust class of multidimensional non-uniformly hyperbolic transformations. Oliveira and Viana [15] proved that there is a unique equilibrium state for a large class of non- uniformly expanding transformations and Holder continuous potentials with small variation. For an open class of potentials with small variation, we prove quasi-compactness of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius operator in a space $V_θ$ of functions with essential bounded variation that strictly contain Holder con…
In this paper we study the decay of correlations for Gibbs measures associated to codimension one Axiom A attractors for flows. We prove that a codimension one Axiom A attractors whose strong stable foliation is $C^{1+α}$ either have exponential decay of correlations with respect to all Gibbs measures associated to Hölder continuous potentials or their stable and unstable bundles are jointly integrable. As a consequence, there exist $C^1$-open sets of $C^3$-vector fields generating Axiom A flows having attractors so that: (i) mix exponentially with respect to equilibrium states associated with…
In this work we study strong spectral properties of Ruelle transfer operators related to a large family of Gibbs measures for contact Anosov flows. The ultimate aim is to establish exponential decay of correlations for Hölder observables with respect to a very general class of Gibbs measures. The approach invented in 1997 by Dolgopyat \cite{D1} and further developed in \cite{St2} is substantially refined here, allowing to deal with much more general situations than before, although we still restrict ourselves to the uniformly hyperbolic case. A rather general procedure is established which pro…
We continue the development of transfer operator techniques for expanding maps on a lattice coupled by general interaction functions. We obtain a spectral gap for an appropriately defined transfer operator, and, as corollaries, the existence of an invariant conformal probability measure for the system, exponential decay of correlations, the central limit theorem and the almost sure invariance principle.
We consider a wide family of non-uniformly expanding maps and hyperbolic Hölder continuous potentials. We prove that the unique equilibrium state associated to each element of this family is given by the eigenfunction of the transfer operator and the eigenmeasure of the dual operator (both having the spectral radius as eigenvalue). We show that the transfer operator has the spectral gap property in some space of Hölder continuous observables and from this we obtain an exponential decay of correlations and a central limit theorem for the equilibrium state. Moreover, we establish the analyticity…
We study the spectral gap for transfer operators of the skew product $F: \mathbb{T}^d\times \mathbb{T}^\ell\to \mathbb{T}^d\times \mathbb{T}^\ell$ given by $F(x,y)=(Tx, y+τ(x) \pmod{ \mathbb{Z}^\ell})$, where $T: \mathbb{T}^d\to \mathbb{T}^d$ is a $C^\infty$ uniformly expanding endomorphism, and the fiber map $τ: \mathbb{T}^d\to \mathbb{R}^\ell$ is a $C^\infty$ map. We construct a Hilbert space $\mathcal{W}^{-s}$ for any $s<0$, which contains all the Hölder functions of Hölder exponents $|s|$ on $ \mathbb{T}^d\times \mathbb{T}^\ell$. Applying the method of semiclassical analysis, we obtain the…
We study the existence, uniqueness and rate of decay of correlation of equilibrium measures associated to robust classes of non-uniformly expanding local diffeomorphisms and Hölder continuous potentials. The approach used in this paper is the spectral analysis of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius transfer operator. More precisely, we combine the expanding features of the eigenmeasures of the transfer operator with a Lasota-Yorke type inequality to prove the existence of an unique equilibrium measure with fast decay of correlations.
We investigate a wide class of two-dimensional hyperbolic systems with singularities, and prove the almost sure invariance principle (ASIP) for the random process generated by sequences of dynamically Hölder observables. The observables could be unbounded, and the process may be non-stationary and need not have linearly growing variances. Our results apply to Anosov diffeomorphisms, Sinai dispersing billiards and their perturbations. The random processes under consideration are related to the fluctuation of Lyapunov exponents, the shrinking target problem, etc.
We consider exponential large deviations estimates for unbounded observables on uniformly expanding dynamical systems. We show that uniform expansion does not imply the existence of a rate function for unbounded observables no matter the tail behavior of the cumulative distribution function. We give examples of unbounded observables with exponential decay of autocorrelations, exponential decay under the transfer operator in each $L^p$, $1\le p < \infty$, and strictly stretched exponential large deviation. For observables of form $|\log d(x,p)|^α$, $p$ periodic, on uniformly expanding systems w…
We prove exponential decay of correlations for Hölder continuous observables with respect to any Gibbs measure for contact Anosov flows admitting Pesin sets with exponentially small tails. This is achieved by establishing strong spectral estimates for certain Ruelle transfer operators for such flows.
In this article, we study the decay rates of the correlation functions for a hyperbolic system $T: M \to M$ with singularities that preserves a unique mixing SRB measure $μ$. We prove that, under some general assumptions, the correlations $ C_{n}(f,g)$ decay exponentially as $n\to \infty$ for each pair of piecewise Hölder observables $f, g\in L^p(μ)$ and for each $p>1$. As an application, we prove that the autocorrelations of the first return time functions decay exponentially for the induced maps of various billiard systems, which include the semi-dispersing billiards on a rectangle, billiard…
We investigate the decay rates of correlations for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems with or without singularities, on piecewise Hölder observables. By constructing a new scheme of coupling methods using the probability renewal theory, we obtain the optimal bounds for decay rates of correlations for a large class of such observables. We also establish the alpha-mixing property for time series generated by these systems, which leads to a vast ranges of limiting theorems. Our results apply to rather general hyperbolic systems with singularities, including Bunimovich flower billiards, semidispersin…
It is well known that the Liverani-Saussol-Vaienti map satisfies a central limit theorem for Hölder observables in the parameter regime where the correlations are summable. We show that when $C^2$ observables are considered, the variance of the limiting normal distribution is a $C^1$ function of the parameter. We first show this for the first return map to the base of the second branch by studying the Green-Kubo formula, then conclude the result for the original map using Kac's lemma and relying on linear response.
Linked-twist maps are area-preserving, piece-wise diffeomorphisms, defined on a subset of the torus. They are non-uniformly hyperbolic generalisations of the well-known Arnold Cat Map. We show that a class of canonical examples have polynomial decay of correlations for α-Hölder observables, of order 1/n.
We consider pairs of toral automorphisms (A,B) satisfying an invariant cone property. At each iteration, A acts with probability p and B with probability 1-p. We prove exponential decay of correlations for a class of Holder continuous observables.
We consider a class of $\mathcal C^{4}$ partially hyperbolic systems on $\mathbb T^2$ described by maps $F_\varepsilon(x,θ)=(f(x,θ),θ+\varepsilonω(x,θ))$ where $f(\cdot,θ)$ are expanding maps of the circle. For sufficiently small $\varepsilon$ and $ω$ generic in an open set, we precisely classify the SRB measures for $F_\varepsilon$ and their statistical properties, including exponential decay of correlation for Hölder observables with explicit and nearly optimal bounds on the decay rate.
For Dynamical Systems, a strong bound on multiple correlations implies the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) [ChMa]. In Chernov's paper [Ch2], such a bound is derived for dynamically Holder continuous observables of dispersing Billiards. Here we weaken the regularity assumption and subsequently show that the bound on multiple correlations follows directly from the bound on pair correlations. Thus, a strong bound on pair correlations alone implies the CLT, for a wider class of observables. The result is extended to Anosov diffeomorphisms in any dimension.
We study the rate of decay of correlations for equilibrium states associated to a robust class of non-uniformly expanding maps where no Markov assumption is required. We show that the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius operator acting on the space of Holder continuous observables has a spectral gap and deduce the exponential decay of correlations and the central limit theorem. In particular, we obtain an alternative proof for the existence and uniqueness of the equilibrium states and we prove that the topological pressure varies continuously. Finally, we use the spectral properties of the transfer operat…
