A combinatorial property of prositive group presentations, called completeness, is introduced, with an effective criterion for recognizing complete presentations, and an iterative method for completing an incomplete presentation. We show how to directly read several properties of the associated monoid and group from a complete presentation: cancellativity or existence of common multiples in the case of the monoid, or isoperimetric inequality in the case of the group. In particular, we obtain a new criterion for recognizing that a monoid embeds in a group of fractions. Typical presentations eligible for the current approach are the standard presentations of the Artin groups and the Heisenberg group.
It is an immediate consequence of the results by Yiftach and Schlage-Puchta that a presentation with p-deficiency greater than one defines a group with positive rank gradient. By results of Button and Thillaisundaram, a finite presentation with p-deficiency greater than one defines a p-large group. Both Yiftach/Schlage-Puchta and Thillaisundaram extended these results to the p-deficiency one case. In this paper we consider the case when the presentation has p-deficiency less than or equal to one.
A large class of positive finite presentations of the braid groups is found and studied. It is shown that no presentations but known exceptions in this class have the property that equivalent braid words are also equivalent under positive relations.
We introduce a notion of permutation presentations of modules over finite groups, and completely determine finite groups over which every module has a permutation presentation. To get this result, we prove that every coflasque module over a cyclic p-group is permutation projective.
The complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement is known to be homotopic to a minimal CW complex. There are several approaches to the minimality. In this paper, we restrict our attention to real two dimensional cases, and introduce the "dual" objects so called minimal stratifications. The strata are explicitly described as semialgebraic sets. The stratification induces a partition of the complement into a disjoint union of contractible spaces, which is minimal in the sense that the number of codimension $k$ pieces equals the $k$-th Betti number. We also discuss presentations for the fundame…
In his papers [2], [3] Brin introduced the higher dimensional Thompson groups nV which are generalizations to the Thompson's group V of self-homeomorphisms of the Cantor set and found a finite set of generators and relations in the case n = 2. We show how to generalize his construction to obtain a finite presentation for every positive integer n. As a corollary, we obtain another proof that the groups nV are simple (first proved by Brin in [4]).
We provide new group presentations for surface braid groups which are positive. We study some properties of such presentations and we solve the conjugacy problem in a particular case.
The dual symmetric inverse monoid $\mathscr{I}_n^*$ is the inverse monoid of all isomorphisms between quotients of an $n$-set. We give a monoid presentation of $\mathscr{I}_n^*$ and, along the way, establish criteria for a monoid to be inverse when it is generated by completely regular elements.
Every tame, prime and alternating knot is equivalent to a tame, prime and alternating knot in regular position, with a common projection. In this work, we show that the Dehn presentation of the knot group of a tame, prime, alternating knot, with a regular and common projection has a finite and complete rewriting system. Although there are rules in the rewriting system with left-hand side a generator and which increase the length of the words we show that the system is terminating.
We give a complete survey of a construction by Boone and Collins for embedding any finitely presented group into one with $8$ generators and $26$ relations. We show that this embedding preserves the set of orders of torsion elements, and in particular torsion-freeness. We combine this with the independent results of Belegradek and Chiodo to prove that there is an $8$-generator $26$-relator universal finitely presented torsion-free group (one into which all finitely presented torsion-free groups embed).
We give several new positive finite presentations for the pure braid group that are easy to remember and simple in form. All of our presentations involve a metric on the punctured disc so that the punctures are arranged "convexly", which is why we describe them as geometric presentaitons. Motivated by a presentation for the full braid group that we call the "rotation presentation", we introduce presentations for the pure braid group that we call the "twist presentation" and the "swing presentation". From the point of view of mapping class groups, the swing presentation can be interpreted as st…
Groups defined by presentations for which the components of the corresponding star graph are the incidence graphs of generalized polygons are of interest as they are small cancellation groups that - via results of Edjvet and Vdovina - are fundamental groups of polyhedra with the generalized polygons as links and so act on Euclidean or hyperbolic buildings; in the hyperbolic case the groups are SQ-universal. A cyclic presentation of a group is a presentation with an equal number of generators and relators that admits a particular cyclic symmetry. We obtain a classification of the non-redundant …
We consider groups defined by cyclic presentations where the defining word has length three and the cyclic presentation satisfies the T(6) small cancellation condition. We classify when these groups are hyperbolic. When combined with known results, this completely classifies the hyperbolic T(6) cyclically presented groups.
Suppose that G is a nontrivial torsion-free group and w is a word over the alphabet G\cup\{x_1^{\pm1},...,x_n^{\pm1}\}. It is proved that for n\ge2 the group G=<G,x_1,x_2,...,x_n | w=1> always contains a nonabelian free subgroup. For n=1 the question about the existence of nonabelian free subgroups in G is answered completely in the unimodular case (i.e., when the exponent sum of x_1 in w is one). Some generalisations of these results are discussed.
We obtain new presentations for the imprimitive complex reflection groups of type $(de,e,r)$ and their braid groups $B(de,e,r)$ for $d,r \ge 2$. Diagrams for these presentations are proposed. The presentations have much in common with Coxeter presentations of real reflection groups. They are positive and homogeneous, and give rise to quasi-Garside structures. Diagram automorphisms correspond to group automorphisms. The new presentation shows how the braid group $B(de,e,r)$ is a semidirect product of the braid group of affine type $\widetilde A_{r-1}$ and an infinite cyclic group. Elements of $…
We will study the presentations of fundamental groups of the complement of complexified real affine line arrangements that do not contain two parallel lines. By Yoshinaga's minimal presentation, we can give positive homogeneous presentations of the fundamental groups. We consider the associated monoids defined by the presentations. It turns out that, in some cases, left (resp. right) \emph{least common multiple} does not always exist. Hence, the monoids are neither \emph{Garside} nor \emph{Artin}. Nevertheless, we will show that they carry certain particular elements similar to the \emph{funda…
This paper presents a classification of all p-groups of order p^5 up to isomorphism. It contains a full list of their polycyclic presentations, a short introduction to the basic ideas of the methodes used to classify the groups, and a detailed proof of the adequacy and completeness of the classification and presentations presented in the paper.
We give a new presentation of the braid group $B$ of the complex reflection group $G(e,e,r)$ which is positive and homogeneous, and for which the generators map to reflections in the corresponding complex reflection group. We show that this presentation gives rise to a Garside structure for $B$ with Garside element a kind of generalised Coxeter element, and hence obtain solutions to the word and conjugacy problems for $B$.
We present a metric condition ${\LARGEτ}'$ which describes the geometry of classical small cancellation groups and applies also to other known classes of groups such as two-dimensional Artin groups. We prove that presentations satisfying condition ${\LARGEτ}'$ are diagrammatically reducible in the sense of Sieradski and Gersten. In particular we deduce that the standard presentation of an Artin group is aspherical if and only if it is diagrammatically reducible. We show that, under some extra hypotheses, ${\LARGEτ}'$-groups have quadratic Dehn functions and solvable conjugacy problem. In the s…
If G is a finite graph and n is a natural number, then the n-strand braid group of G is the fundamental group of the configuration space of n points on G. This article gives a complete computation of the integral cohomology rings of the n-strand braid groups in case G is a tree. Some of the argument builds on earlier joint work with Lucas Sabalka.
A conjugation-free geometric presentation of a fundamental group is a presentation with the natural topological generators $x_1, ..., x_n$ and the cyclic relations: $x_{i_k}x_{i_{k-1}} ... x_{i_1} = x_{i_{k-1}} ... x_{i_1} x_{i_k} = ... = x_{i_1} x_{i_k} ... x_{i_2}$ with no conjugations on the generators. We have already proved that if the graph of the arrangement is a disjoint union of cycles, then its fundamental group has a conjugation-free geometric presentation. In this paper, we extend this property to arrangements whose graphs are a disjoint union of cycle-tree graphs. Moreover, we stu…
Mark and Paupert devised a general method for obtaining presentations for arithmetic non-cocompact lattices, $Γ$, in isometry groups of negatively curved symmetric spaces. The method involves a classical theorem of Macbeath applied to a $Γ$-invariant covering by horoballs of the negatively curved symmetric space upon which $Γ$ acts. In this paper, we will discuss the application of their method to the Picard modular groups, $\textrm{PU}(2,1;\mathcal{O}_{d})$, when $d=2,11$, and obtain presentations for these groups, which completes the list of presentations for Picard modular groups whose entr…
We give an example of a monoid with finitely many left and right ideals, all of whose Schutzenberger groups are presentable by finite complete rewriting systems, and so each have finite derivation type, but such that the monoid itself does not have finite derivation type, and therefore does not admit a presentation by a finite complete rewriting system. The example also serves as a counterexample to several other natural questions regarding complete rewriting systems and finite derivation type. Specifically it allows us to construct two finitely generated monoids M and N with isometric Cayley …
We study some combinatorial properties of the word metric of Thompson's group F in the standard two generator finite presentation. We explore connections between the tree pair diagram representing an element w of F, its normal form in the infinite presentation, its word length, and minimal length representatives of it. We estimate word length in terms of the number and type of carets in the tree pair diagram and show sharpness of those estimates. In addition we explore some properties of the Cayley graph of F with respect to the two generator finite presentation. Namely, we exhibit the form of…
For cyclically presented groups $G = G_n(w)$ with positive length four relators $w = x_0x_jx_kx_l$ in the free group with basis $x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_{n-1}$, we classify finiteness and, modulo two unresolved cases, we classify asphericity for the underlying presentations. We show that the fixed point subgroup of the shift $x_i \mapsto x_{i+1}$ is always finite and we relate finiteness of $G$ and asphericity to the dynamics of the shift action by the cyclic group of order $n$ on the nonidentity elements of $G$.
We obtain a complete classification of graph products of finite abelian groups whose Cayley graphs with respect to the standard presentations are planar.
We generalize presentations of the fundamental group of discriminant complements and arrive at a class of presentations associated naturally with words in the free monoid of the alphabet $σ_1,\dots,σ_{n-1}$. Our study addresses invariance properties of these presentations and the presented groups under various operations on the words. In particular we prove that the group does only depend on the corresponding element in the positive braid monoid, and under mild hypotheses only on its conjugacy class in the braid group.
In this paper, a connection between rewriting systems and embedding of monoids in groups is found. We show that if a group with a positive presentation has a complete rewriting system $\Re$ that satisfies the condition that each rule in $\Re$ with positive left-hand side has a positive right-hand side, then the monoid presented by the subset of positive rules from $\Re$ embeds in the group. As an example, we give a simple proof that right angled Artin monoids embed in the corresponding right angled Artin groups. This is a special case of the well-known result of Paris \cite{paris} that Artin m…
Tits has defined Steinberg groups and Kac-Moody groups for any root system and any commutative ring R. We establish a Curtis-Tits-style presentation for the Steinberg group St of any rank > 2 irreducible affine root system, for any R. Namely, St is the direct limit of the Steinberg groups coming from the 1- and 2-node subdiagrams of the Dynkin diagram. This leads to a completely explicit presentation. Using this we show that St is finitely presented if the rank is > 3 and R is finitely generated as a ring, or if the rank is 3 and R is finitely generated as a module over a subring generated by …
This paper studies complete rewriting systems and biautomaticity for three interesting classes of finite-rank homogeneous monoids: Chinese monoids, hypoplactic monoids, and sylvester monoids. For Chinese monoids, we first give new presentations via finite complete rewriting systems, using more lucid constructions and proofs than those given independently by Chen & Qui and Güzel Karpuz; we then construct biautomatic structures. For hypoplactic monoids, we construct finite complete rewriting systems and biautomatic structures. For sylvester monoids, which are not finitely presented, we prove tha…
An idea to present a classical Lie group of positive dimension by generators and relations sounds dubious, but happens to be fruitful. The isometry groups of classical geometries admit elegant and useful presentations by generators and relations closely related to geometry. They allow to make fast and efficient geometric calculations. In this paper simple presentations of the isometry groups of Euclidean plane, 2-sphere, the real projective plane and groups SO(3), O(n) are introduced.
The left patience sorting (lPS) monoid, also known in the literature as the Bell monoid, and the right patient sorting (rPS) monoid are introduced by defining certain congruences on words. Such congruences are constructed using insertion algorithms based on the concept of decreasing subsequences. Presentations for these monoids are given. Each finite-rank rPS monoid is shown to have polynomial growth and to satisfy a non-trivial identity (dependent on its rank), while the infinite rank rPS monoid does not satisfy a non-trivial identity. The lPS monoids of finite rank have exponential growth an…
We present a theoretical algorithm which, given any finite presentation of a group as input, will terminate with answer yes if and only if the group is large. We then implement a practical version of this algorithm using Magma and apply it to a range of presentations. Our main focus is on 2-generator 1-relator presentations where we have a complete picture of largeness if the relator has exponent sum zero in one generator and word length at most 12, as well as when the relator is in the commutator subgroup and has word length at most 18. Indeed all but a tiny number of presentations define lar…
We introduce the concept of quasirational relation modules for discrete and pro-$p$ presentations of discrete and pro-$p$ groups and show that aspherical presentations and their subpresentations are quasirational. In the pro-$p$-case quasirationality of pro-$p$-groups with a single defining relation holds. For every quasirational (pro-$p$)relation module we construct the so called $p$-adic rationalization, which is a pro-fd-module $\overline{R}\widehat{\otimes}\mathbb{Q}_p= \varprojlim R/[R,R\mathcal{M}_n]\otimes\mathbb{Q}_p$. We provide the isomorphisms $\overline{R^{\wedge}_w}(\mathbb{Q}_p)=…
In this article, we investigate various properties of the pure virtual braid group PV_3. From its canonical presentation, we obtain a free product decomposition of PV_3. As a consequence, we show that PV_3 is residually torsion free nilpotent, which implies that the set of finite type invariants in the sense of Goussarov-Polyak-Viro is complete for virtual pure braids with three strands. Moreover we prove that the presentation of PV_3 is aspherical. Finally we determine the cohomology ring and the associated graded Lie algebra of PV_3.
