A large class of positive finite presentations of the braid groups is found and studied. It is shown that no presentations but known exceptions in this class have the property that equivalent braid words are also equivalent under positive relations.
In this paper we give new presentations of the braid groups and the pure braid groups of a closed surface. We also give an algorithm to solve the word problem in these groups, using the given presentations.
In the paper we give a survey of rather new notions and results which generalize classical ones in the theory of braids. Among such notions are various inverse monoids of partial braids. We also observe presentations different from standard Artin presentation for generalizations of braids. Namely, we consider presentations with small number of generators, Sergiescu graph-presentations and Birman-Ko-Lee presentation. The work of V.V.Chaynikov on the word and conjugacy problems for the singular braid monoid in Birman-Ko-Lee generators is described as well.
We give presentations, in terms of generators and relations, for the monoids of singular braids on closed surfaces. The proof of the validity of these presentations can also be applied to verify, in a new way, the presentations given by Birman for the monoids of Singular Artin braids.
We give several new positive finite presentations for the pure braid group that are easy to remember and simple in form. All of our presentations involve a metric on the punctured disc so that the punctures are arranged "convexly", which is why we describe them as geometric presentaitons. Motivated by a presentation for the full braid group that we call the "rotation presentation", we introduce presentations for the pure braid group that we call the "twist presentation" and the "swing presentation". From the point of view of mapping class groups, the swing presentation can be interpreted as st…
We define braid presentation of edge-oriented spatial graphs as a natural generalization of braid presentation of oriented links. We show that every spatial graph has a braid presentation. For an oriented link it is known that the braid index is equal to the minimal number of Seifert circles. We show that an analogy does not hold for spatial graphs.
According to the Tits conjecture proved by Crisp and Paris, [CP], the subgroups of the braid group generated by proper powers of the Artin elements are presented by the commutators of generators which are powers of commuting elements. Hence they are naturally presented as right-angled Artin groups. The case of subgroups generated by powers of the band generators is more involved. We show that the groups are right-angled Artin groups again, if all generators are proper powers with exponent at least 3. We also give a presentation in cases at the other extreme, when all generators occur with expo…
We generalize presentations of the fundamental group of discriminant complements and arrive at a class of presentations associated naturally with words in the free monoid of the alphabet $σ_1,\dots,σ_{n-1}$. Our study addresses invariance properties of these presentations and the presented groups under various operations on the words. In particular we prove that the group does only depend on the corresponding element in the positive braid monoid, and under mild hypotheses only on its conjugacy class in the braid group.
The notion of a virtual knot introduced by L. Kauffman induces the notion of a virtual braid. It is closely related with a welded braid of R. Fenn, R. Rimanyi and C. Rourke. Alexander's and Markov's theorems for virtual knots and braids are proved. Similar results for welded knots and braids are also proved.
Inverse braid monoid describes a structure on braids where the number of strings is not fixed. So, some strings of initial $n$ may be deleted. In the paper we show that many properties and objects based on braid groups may be extended to the inverse braid monoids. Namely we prove an inclusion into a monoid of partial monomorphisms of a free group. This gives a solution of the word problem. Another solution is obtained by an approach similar to that of Garside. We give also the analogues of Artin presentation with two generators and Sergiescu graph-presentations.
This paper is concerned with detecting when a closed braid and its axis are 'mutually braided' in the sense of Rudolph. It deals with closed braids which are fibred links, the simplest case being closed braids which present the unknot. The geometric condition for mutual braiding refers to the existence of a close control on the way in which the whole family of fibre surfaces meet the family of discs spanning the braid axis. We show how such a braid can be presented naturally as a word in the `band generators' of the braid group discussed by Birman, Ko and Lee in their recent account of the ban…
We give formulae for the first homology of the $n$-braid group and the pure 2-braid group over a finite graph in terms of graph theoretic invariants. As immediate consequences, a graph is planar if and only if the first homology of the $n$-braid group over the graph is torsion-free and the conjectures about the first homology of the pure 2-braid groups over graphs in \cite{FH} can be verified. We discover more characteristics of graph braid groups: the $n$-braid group over a planar graph and the pure 2-braid group over any graph have a presentation whose relators are words of commutators, and …
In this article, we investigate various properties of the pure virtual braid group PV_3. From its canonical presentation, we obtain a free product decomposition of PV_3. As a consequence, we show that PV_3 is residually torsion free nilpotent, which implies that the set of finite type invariants in the sense of Goussarov-Polyak-Viro is complete for virtual pure braids with three strands. Moreover we prove that the presentation of PV_3 is aspherical. Finally we determine the cohomology ring and the associated graded Lie algebra of PV_3.
We find finite presentations for the automorphism group of the Artin pure braid group and the automorphism group of the pure braid group associated to the full monomial group.
In the paper we give a survey on braid groups and subjects connected with them. We start with the initial definition, then we give several interpretations as well as several presentations of these groups. Burau presentation for the pure braid group and the Markov normal form are given next. Garside normal form and his solution of the conjugacy problem are presented as well as more recent results on the ordering and on the linearity of braid groups. Next topics are the generalizations of braids, their homological properties and connections with the other mathematical fields, like knot theory (v…
We give a finite presentation for the braid twist group of a decorated surface. If the decorated surface arises from a triangulated marked surface without punctures, we obtain a finite presentation for the spherical twist group of the associated 3-Calabi-Yau triangulated category. The motivation/application is that the result will be used to show that the (principal component of) space of stability conditions on the 3-Calabi-Yau category is simply connected in the sequel.
We give a monoidal presentation of Coxeter and braid 2-groups, in terms of decorated planar graphs. This presentation extends the Coxeter presentation. We deduce a simple criterion for a Coxeter group or braid group to act on a category.
Consider the unit ball, $B = D \times [0,1]$, containing $n$ unknotted arcs $a_1, a_2, ..., a_n$ such that the boundary of each $a_i$ lies in $D \times \{0\}$. The Hilden (or Wicket) group is the mapping class group of $B$ fixing the arcs $a_1 \cup a_2 \cup ... \cup a_n$ setwise and fixing $D \times \{1\}$ pointwise. This group can be considered as a subgroup of the braid group. The pure Hilden group is defined to be the intersection of the Hilden group and the pure braid group. In a previous paper we computed a presentaion for the Hilden group using an action of the group on a cellular comple…
The surface singular braid monoid corresponds to marked graph diagrams of knotted surfaces in braid form. In a quest to resolve linearity problem for this monoid, we will show that if it is defined on at least two or at least three strands, then its two or respectively three dimensional representations are not faithful. We will also derive new presentations for the surface singular braid monoid, one with reduced the number of defining relations, and the other with reduced the number of its singular generators. We include surface singular braid formulations of all knotted surfaces in Yoshikawa'…
In this paper we show that the singular braid monoid of an orientable surface can be embedded in a group. The proof is purely topological, making no use of the monoid presentation.
This article is dedicate to cabling on virtual braids. This construction gives a new generating set for the virtual pure braid group $VP_n$. Consequently we describe $VP_4$ as HNN-extension. As an application to classical braids, we find a new presentation of the Artin pure braid group $P_4$ in terms of the cabled generators.
In this article, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for embedding a finite index subgroup of Artin's braid group into the mapping class group of a connected orientable surface.
We first show that the braid group over a graph topologically containing no $Θ$-shape subgraph has a presentation related only by commutators. Then using discrete Morse theory and triple Massey products, we prove that a graph topologically contains none of four prescribed graphs if and only if its 4-braid groups is a right-angled Artin group.
An embedding of the m-times punctured disc into the n-times punctured disc, for n>m, yields an embedding of the braid group on m strands B_m into the braid group on n strands B_n, called a geometric embedding. The main example consists of adding n-m trivial strands to the right of each braid on m strands. We show that geometric embeddings do not merge conjugacy classes, meaning that if the images of two elements in B_m by a geometric embedding are conjugate in B_n, the original elements are conjugate in B_m. We also show that the result does not hold, in general, for geometric embeddings of ma…
The braid group $B_{n}$, endowed with Artin's presentation, admits an antiautomorphism $B_{n} \to B_{n}$, such that $v \mapsto \bar{v}$ is defined by reading braids in reverse order (from right to left instead of left to right). We prove that the map $B_{n} \to B_{n}$, $v \mapsto v \bar{v}$ is injective. We also give some consequences arising due to this injectivity.
This article is a survey on the braid groups, the Artin groups, and the Garside groups. It is a presentation, accessible to non-experts, of various topological and algebraic aspects of these groups. It is also a report on three points of the theory: the faithful linear representations, the cohomology, and the geometrical representations.
Let M be a compact, connected surface, possibly with a finite set of points removed from its interior. Let d,n be positive integers, and let N be a d-fold covering space of M. We show that the covering map induces an embedding of the n-th braid group B_n(M) of M in the (dn)-th braid group B_{dn}(N) of N, and give several applications of this result. First, we classify the finite subgroups of the n-th braid group of the real projective plane, from which we deduce an alternative proof of the classification of the finite subgroups of the mapping class group of the n-punctured real projective plan…
In this paper we prove certain Hurwitz equivalence properties in the braid group. Our main result is that every two factorizations of $Δ_n ^2$ where the elements of the factorization are semi-frame are Hurwitz equivalent. The results of this paper are generalization of the results in \cite{B4}. We use a new presentation of the braid group, called the Birman-Ko-Lee presentation, to define the semi-frame structure. The main result of this paper can be applied to compute the BMT invariant of surfaces. The BMT is the class of Hurwitz equivalent factorizations of the central element of the braid gr…
Pursueing our investigations on the relations between Thompson groups and mapping class groups, we introduce the group $T^*$ (and its further generalizations) which is an extension of the Ptolemy-Thompson group $T$ by means of the full braid group $B_{\infty}$ on infinitely many strands. We prove that it is a finitely presented group with solvable word problem, and give an explicit presentation of it.
One of the most interesting questions about a group is if its word problem can be solved and how. The word problem in the braid group is of particular interest to topologists, algebraists and geometers, and is the target of intensive current research. We look at the braid group from a topological point of view (rather than a geometrical one). The braid group is defined by the action of diffeomorphisms on the fundamental group of a punctured disk. We exploit the topological definition of the braid group in order to give a new approach for solving its word problem. Our algorithm is faster, in co…
We design an algorithm writing down presentations of graph braid groups. Generators are represented in terms of actual motions of robots moving without collisions on a given graph. A key ingredient is a new motion planning algorithm whose complexity is linear in the number of edges and quadratic in the number of robots. The computing algorithm implies that 2-point braid groups of all light planar graphs have presentations where all relators are commutators.
Let $WB_n$ be the welded (or loop) braid group on n strands, $n \geq 3$. We investigate commutator subgroup of $WB_n$. We prove that the commutator subgroup $WB_n'$ is finitely generated and Hopfian. We show that $WB_n'$ is perfect if and only if $n \geq 5$. We also compute finite presentation for $FWB_n'$, the commutator subgroup of the flat welded braid group $FWB_n$. Along the way, we investigate adorability of these groups.
We consider finite-sheeted, regular, possibly branched covering spaces of compact surfaces with boundary and the associated liftable and symmetric mapping class groups. In particular, we classify when either of these subgroups coincides with the entire mapping class group of the surface. As a consequence, we construct infinite families of non-geometric embeddings of the braid group into mapping class groups in the sense of Wajnryb. Indeed, our embeddings map standard braid generators to products of Dehn twists about curves forming chains of arbitrary length. As key tools, we use the Birman-Hil…
We construct an action of the braid group B_{2g+2} on the free group F_{2g} extending an action of B_4 on F_2 introduced earlier by Reutenauer and the author. Our action induces a homomorphism from B_{2g+2} into the symplectic modular group Sp_{2g}(Z). In the special case g=2 we show that the latter homomorphism is surjective and determine its kernel, thus obtaining a braid-like presentation of Sp_4(Z).
We construct an embedding of any right-angled Artin group $G(Δ)$ defined by a graph $Δ$ into a graph braid group. The number of strands required for the braid group is equal to the chromatic number of $Δ$. This construction yields an example of a hyperbolic surface subgroup embedded in a two strand planar graph braid group.
These are Lecture Notes of a course given by the author at the French-Spanish School "Tresses in Pau", held in Pau (France) in October 2009. It is basically an introduction to distinct approaches and techniques that can be used to show results in braid groups. Using these techniques we provide several proofs of well known results in braid groups, namely the correctness of Artin's presentation, that the braid group is torsion free, or that its center is generated by the full twist. We also recall some solutions of the word and conjugacy problems, and that roots of a braid are always conjugate. …
Let $SB_n$ be the singular braid group generated by braid generators $σ_i$ and singular braid generators $τ_i$, $1 \leq i \leq n-1$. Let $ST_n$ denote the group that is the kernel of the homomorphism that maps, for each $i$, $σ_i$ to the cyclic permutation $(i, i+1)$ and $τ_i$ to $1$. In this paper we investigate the group $ST_3$. We obtain a presentation for $ST_3$. We prove that $ST_3$ is isomorphic to the singular pure braid group $SP_3$ on $3$ strands. We also prove that the group $ST_3$ is semi-direct product of a subgroup $H$ and an infinite cyclic group, where the subgroup $H$ is an HNN…
We study the pure braid groups $P_n(RP^2)$ of the real projective plane $RP^2$, and in particular the possible splitting of the Fadell-Neuwirth short exact sequence $1 \to P_m(RP^2 {x_1,...,x_n} \to P_{n+m}(RP^2) \stackrel{p_{\ast}}{\to} P_n(RP^2) \to 1$, where $n\geq 2$ and $m\geq 1$, and $p_{\ast}$ is the homomorphism which corresponds geometrically to forgetting the last $m$ strings. This problem is equivalent to that of the existence of a section for the associated fibration $p: F_{n+m}(RP^2) \to F_n(RP^2)$ of configuration spaces. Van Buskirk proved in 1966 that $p$ and $p_{\ast}$ admit a…
In this paper we find a finite set of generators and defining relations for the singular pure braid group $SP_n$, $n \geq 3$, that is a subgroup of the singular braid group $SG_n$. Using this presentation, we prove that the center of $SG_n$ (which is equal to the center of $SP_n$ for $n \geq 3$) is a direct factor in $SP_n$ but it is not a direct factor in $SP_n$. We introduce subgroups of camomile type and prove that the singular pure braid group $SP_n$, $n \geq 5$, is a subgroup of camomile type in $SG_n$. Also we construct the fundamental singquandle using a representation of the singular b…
In this paper, a method is given to calculate the Jones polynomial of the 6-plat presentations of knots by using a representation of the braid group $\mathbb{B}_6$ into a group of $5\times 5$ matrices. We also can calculate the Jones polynomial of the $2n$-plat presentations of knots by generalizing the method for the 6-plat presentations of knots.
We consider braids on $m+n$ strands, such that the first $m$ strands are trivially fixed. We denote the set of all such braids by $B_{m,n}$. Via concatenation $B_{m,n}$ acquires a group structure. The objective of this paper is to find a presentation for $B_{m,n}$ using the structure of its corresponding pure braid subgroup, $P_{m,n}$, and the fact that it is a subgroup of the classical Artin group $B_{m+n}$. Then we give an irredundant presentation for $B_{m,n}$. The paper concludes by showing that these braid groups or appropriate cosets of them are related to knots in handlebodies, in knot …
This paper upbuilds the theoretical framework of orbit braids in $M\times I$ by making use of the orbit configuration space $F_G(M,n)$, which enriches the theory of ordinary braids, where $M$ is a connected topological manifold of dimension at least 2 with an effective action of a finite group $G$ and the action of $G$ on $I$ is trivial. Main points of our work include as follows. We introduce the orbit braid group $\mathcal{B}_n^{orb}(M,G)$, and show that it is isomorphic to a group with an additional endowed operation (called the extended fundamental group of $F_G(M,n)$), formed by the homot…
We prove that an arbitrary right-angled Artin group $G$ admits a quasi-isometric group embedding into a right-angled Artin group defined by the opposite graph of a tree. Consequently, $G$ admits quasi-isometric group embeddings into a pure braid group and into the area-preserving diffeomorphism groups of the 2--disk and the 2--sphere, answering questions due to Crisp--Wiest and M. Kapovich. Another corollary is that a pure braid group contains a closed hyperbolic manifold group as a quasi-isometrically embedded subgroup up to dimension eight. Finally, we show that the isomorphism problem, conj…
In this paper, I give a method to calculate the HOMFLY polynomials of knots by using a representation of the braid group B4 into a group of 3 ? 3 matrices. Also, I will give examples of a 2-bridge knot and a 3-bridge knot that have the same Jone polynomial, but different HOMFLY polynomials.
