We introduce a notion of permutation presentations of modules over finite groups, and completely determine finite groups over which every module has a permutation presentation. To get this result, we prove that every coflasque module over a cyclic p-group is permutation projective.
The higher-dimensional Thompson groups $nV$, for $n \geq 2$, were introduced by Brin in 2005. We provide new presentations for each of these infinite simple groups. The first is an infinite presentation, analogous to the Coxeter presentation for the finite symmetric group, with generating set equal to the set of transpositions in $nV$ and reflecting the self-similar structure of $n$-dimensional Cantor space. We then exploit this infinite presentation to produce further finite presentations that are considerably smaller than those previously known.
We show that one can naturally describe elements of R. Thompson's finitely presented infinite simple group $V$, known by Thompson to have a presentation with four generators and fourteen relations, as products of permutations analogous to transpositions. This perspective provides an intuitive explanation towards the simplicity of $V$ and also perhaps indicates a reason as to why it was one of the first discovered infinite finitely presented simple groups: it is (in some basic sense) a relative of the finite alternating groups. We find a natural infinite presentation for $V$ as a group generate…
We describe a formalism, using groupoids, for the study of rewriting for presentations of inverse monoids, that is based on the Squier complex construction for monoid presentations. We introduce the class of pseudoregular groupoids, an example of which now arises as the fundamental groupoid of our version of the Squier complex. A further key ingredient is the factorisation of the presentation map from a free inverse monoid as the composition of an idempotent pure map and an idempotent separating map. The relation module of a presentation is then defined as the abelianised kernel of this idempo…
The group of alternating colored permutations is the natural analogue of the classical alternating group, inside the wreath product $\mathbb{Z}_r \wr S_n$. We present a 'Coxeter-like' presentation for this group and compute the length function with respect to that presentation. Then, we present this group as a covering of $\mathbb{Z}_{\frac{r}{2}} \wr S_n$ and use this point of view to give another expression for the length function. We also use this covering to lift several known parameters of $\mathbb{Z}_{\frac{r}{2}} \wr S_n$ to the group of alternating colored permutations.
We give formulae for a module presentation of the module of identities among relations for a presentation of a group, in terms of information on 0- and 1-combings of the Cayley graph. This is seen as a special case of extending a partial free crossed resolution of a group given a partial contracting homotopy of its universal cover.
We show that the permutation module over $\mathbb{C}$ afforded by the action of $Sp_{2m}(2^f)$ on its natural module is isomorphic to the permutation module over $\mathbb{C}$ afforded by the action of $Sp_{2m}(2^f)$ on the union of the right cosets of $O_{2m}^+(2^f)$ and $O_{2m}^-(2^f)$.
We investigate finite non-Abelian simple groups $G$ for which the projective cover of the trivial module coincides with the permutation module on a subgroup and classify all cases unless $G$ is of Lie type in defining characteristic.
We study the odd-characteristic structure of permutation modules for the rank 3 natural actions of $O_{2n}^{\pm}(2)$ ($n\geq3$) and $U_{m}(2)$ ($m\geq4$) on nonsingular points of their standard modules.
We describe the structure, including composition factors and submodule lattices, of cross-characteristic permutation modules for the natural actions of the orthogonal groups $O_{m}^{\pm}(3)$ with $m\geq6$ on nonsingular points of their standard modules. These actions together with those studied in \cite{HN} are all examples of primitive rank 3 actions of finite classical groups on nonsingular points.
Permutation modules are fundamental in the representation theory of symmetric groups $\Sym_n$ and their corresponding Iwahori--Hecke algebras $\He = \He(\Sym_n)$. We find an explicit combinatorial basis for the annihilator of a permutation module in the "integral" case -- showing that it is a cell ideal in G.E. Murphy's cell structure of $\He$. The same result holds whenever $\He$ is semisimple, but may fail in the non-semisimple case.
A triangle group is denoted by $Δ(p,q,r)$ and has finite presentation $$ Δ(p,q,r)=\langle x,y | x^p=y^q=(xy)^r=1 \rangle .$$ We examine a method for composition of permutation representations of a triangle group $Δ(p,q,r)$ that was used in Everitt's proof of Higman's 1968 conjecture that every Fuchsian group has amongst its homomorphic images all but finitely many alternating groups. We see that some of these compositions must give imprimitive representations, and in particular situations, where the representations being composed are all equivalent copies of an alternating group in the same de…
The signed permutation modules are a simultaneous generalization of the ordinary permutation modules and the twisted permutation modules of the symmetric group. In a recent paper Dave Benson and Peter Symonds defined a new invariant $γ_G(M)$ for a finite dimensional module $M$ of a finite group $G$ which attempts to quantify how close a module is to being projective. In this paper, we determine this invariant for all the signed permutation modules of the symmetric group using tools from representation theory and combinatorics.
Using cohomological methods, we prove the existence of a subgroup isomorphic to SL(2,q), q = -1 (mod 4), in the permutation module for PSL(2,q) in characteristic 2 that arises from the action on the projective line. A similar problem for q = 1 (mod 4) is reduced to the determination of certain first cohomology groups.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $p > 0$. For $G$ an elementary abelian $p$-group, there exist collections of permutation module such that if $C^*$ is any exact bounded complex whose terms are sums of copies of modules from the collection, then $C^*$ is contractible. A consequence is that if $G$ is any finite group whose Sylow $p$-subgroups are not cyclic or quaternion, and if $C^*$ is a bounded exact complex such that each $C^i$ is direct sum of one dimensional modules and projective modules, then $C^*$ is contractible.
If f is a nonzero complex-valued function defined on a finite abelian group A and \hat f is its Fourier transform, then |Supp (f)||Supp {\hat f)| \ge |A|, where Supp (f) and Supp (\hat f) are the supports of f and \hat f. In this paper we generalize this known result in several directions. In particular, we prove an analogous inequality where the abelian group A is replaced by a transitive right G-set, where G is an arbitrary finite group. We obtain stronger inequalities when the G-set is primitive and we determine the primitive groups for which equality holds. We also explore connections betw…
Quasirational presentations ($QR$-presentations) of (pro-$p$)groups are studied. Such presentations include, in particular, aspherical presentations of discrete groups and their subpresentations and pro-$p$-groups with a single defining relation. Using schematization of $QR$-presentations we answer a variation of J.-P. Serre's question on one-relator pro-$p$-groups.
We introduce the concept of quasirational relation modules for discrete (pro- p) presentations of discrete (pro-p) groups. It is shown, that this class of presentations for discrete groups contains CA-presentations and their subpresentations. For pro-p-groups we see that all presentations of pro-p-groups with a single defining relation are quasirational. We offer definitions of p- adic G(p)-completion and p-adic rationalization of relation modules which are adjusted to quasirational pro-p-presentations. p-adic rationalizations of quasirational relation modules of pro-p-groups are isomorphic to…
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic two, and let $λ$ be a two-part partition of some natural number $r$. Denote the permutation module corresponding to the (maximal) Young subgroup $Σ_λ$ in $Σ_r$ by $M^λ$. We construct a full set of orthogonal primitive idempotents of the centraliser subalgebra $S_K(λ) = 1_λS_K(2,r) 1_λ= End_{KΣ_r}(M^λ)$ of the Schur algebra $S_K(2,r)$. These idempotents are naturally in one-to-one correspondence with the 2-Kostka numbers.
By means of a certain module V and its tensor powers in a finite tensor category, we study a question of whether the depth of a Hopf subalgebra R of a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra H is finite. The module V is the counit representation induced from R to H, which is then a generalized permutation module, as well as a module coalgebra. We show that if in the subalgebra pair either Hopf algebra has finite representation type, or V is either semisimple with R* pointed, projective, or its tensor powers satisfy a Burnside ring formula over a finite set of Hopf subalgebras including R, then the dep…
Every nonabelian finite simple group of rank $n$ over a field of size $q$, with the possible exception of the Ree groups $^2G_2(3^{2e+1})$, has a presentation with a bounded number of generators and relations and total length $O(\log n +\log q)$. As a corollary, we deduce a conjecture of Holt: there is a constant $C$ such that $\dim H^2(G,M)\leq C\dim M$ for every finite simple group $G$, every prime $p$ and every irreducible $F_p [G]$-module $M$.
In [Boltje,Hartmann: Permutation resolutions for Specht modules, J. Algebraic Combin. 34 (2011), 141-162], a chain complex was constructed in a combinatorial way which conjecturally is a resolution of the (dual of the) integral Specht module for the symmetric group in terms of permutation modules. In this paper we extend the definition of the chain complex to the integral Iwahori Hecke algebra and prove the same partial exactness results that were proved in the symmetric group case. A complete proof of the exactness conjecture in the symmetric group case was recently given by Santana and Yudin…
We introduce the concept of quasirational relation modules for discrete and pro-$p$ presentations of discrete and pro-$p$ groups and show that aspherical presentations and their subpresentations are quasirational. In the pro-$p$-case quasirationality of pro-$p$-groups with a single defining relation holds. For every quasirational (pro-$p$)relation module we construct the so called $p$-adic rationalization, which is a pro-fd-module $\overline{R}\widehat{\otimes}\mathbb{Q}_p= \varprojlim R/[R,R\mathcal{M}_n]\otimes\mathbb{Q}_p$. We provide the isomorphisms $\overline{R^{\wedge}_w}(\mathbb{Q}_p)=…
The present survey aims at being a list of Conjectures and Problems in an area of model-theoretic algebra wide open for research, not a list of known results. To keep the text compact, it focuses on structures of finite Morley rank, although the same questions can be asked about other classes of objects, for example, groups definable in $ω$-stable and $o$-minimal theories. In many cases, answers are not known even in the classical category of algebraic groups over algebraically closed fields.
We prove the following three closely related results. The first is that every finite simple group has a profinite presentation with 2 generators and at most 18 relations. The second is that if G is a finite simple group, F a field and M an FG-module, then the dimension of the second cohomology group of G with coefficients in M is at most 17.5 times the dimension of M. The third result is that we may replace 17.5 by 18.5 as long as M is faithful irreducible G-module. These last two results answer conjectures of Holt.
We develop a theory of equivariant group presentations and relate them to the second homology group of a group. Our main application says that the second homology group of the Torelli subgroup of the mapping class group is finitely generated as an $Sp(2g,\mathbb{Z})$-module.
Let G be a finite group, let p be a prime number, and let K be a field of characteristic 0 and k be a field of characteristic p, both large enough. In this note we state explicit formulae for the primitive idempotents of K\otimes pp_k(G), where pp_k(G) is the ring of p-permutation kG-modules.
We describe presentations of braid groups of type ADE and show how these presentations are compatible with mutation of quivers, building on work of Barot and Marsh for Coxeter groups. In types A and D these presentations can be understood geometrically using triangulated surfaces. We then give a categorical interpretation of the presentations, with the new generators acting as spherical twists at simple modules on derived categories of Ginzburg dg-algebras of quivers with potential.
We prove that H^{d-1}(SL_n Z; Q) = 0, where d = n-choose-2 is the cohomological dimension of SL_n Z, and similarly for GL_n Z. We also prove analogous vanishing theorems for cohomology with coefficients in a rational representation of the algebraic group GL_n. These theorems are derived from a presentation of the Steinberg module for SL_n Z whose generators are integral apartment classes, generalizing Manin's presentation for the Steinberg module of SL_2 Z. This presentation was originally constructed by Bykovskii. We give a new topological proof of it.
