We use the pro-group approach to show that $\mathrm{StO}(M, q)$ admits van der Kallen's "another presentation", where $M$ is a module over a commutative ring with sufficiently isotropic quadratic form $q$. Moreover, we construct an analog of ESD-transvections in orthogonal Steinberg pro-groups under some assumptions on their parameters.
We show that the Steinberg group $\text{St}(C_2,{\mathbb Z})$ associated with the Lie type $C_2$ and with integer coefficients can be realized as a quotient of the braid group $B_6$ by one relation. As an application we give a new braid-like presentation of the symplectic modular group $\text{Sp}_4({\mathbb Z})$.
We determine the irreducible constituents of the Steinberg character of an orthogonal group over a finite field restricted to the orthogonal group of one less dimension
For any root system and any commutative ring we give a relatively simple presentation of a group related to its Steinberg group St. This includes the case of infinite root systems used in Kac-Moody theory, for which the Steinberg group was defined by Tits and Morita-Rehmann. In most cases our group equals St, giving a presentation with many advantages over the usual presentation of St. This equality holds for all spherical root systems, all irreducible affine root systems of rank>2, and all 3-spherical root systems. When the coefficient ring satisfies a minor condition, the last condition can …
The main component of (constructive) recognition algorithms for black box groups of Lie type in computational group theory is the construction of unipotent elements. In the existing algorithms unipotent elements are found by random search and therefore the running time of these algorithms is polynomial in the underlying field size $q$ which makes them unfeasible for most practical applications \cite{guralnick01.169}. Meanwhile, the input size of recognition algorithms involves only $\log q$. The present paper introduces a new approach to construction of unipotent elements in which the running …
Tits has defined Kac-Moody and Steinberg groups over commutative rings, providing infinite dimensional analogues of the Chevalley-Demazure group schemes. Here we establish simple explicit presentations for all Steinberg and Kac-Moody groups whose Dynkin diagrams are hyperbolic and simply laced. Our presentations are analogues of the Curtis-Tits presentation of the finite groups of Lie type. When the ground ring is finitely generated, we derive the finite presentability of the Steinberg group, and similarly for the Kac-Moody group when the ground ring is a Dedekind domain of arithmetic type. Th…
We prove the Horrocks theorem for unstable even-dimensional orthogonal Steinberg groups. The Horrocks theorem for Steinberg groups is one of the principal ingredients needed for the proof of the $\mathrm{K}_2$-analogue of Serre's problem, whose positive solution is currently known only in the linear case.
Tits has defined Steinberg groups and Kac-Moody groups for any root system and any commutative ring R. We establish a Curtis-Tits-style presentation for the Steinberg group St of any rank > 2 irreducible affine root system, for any R. Namely, St is the direct limit of the Steinberg groups coming from the 1- and 2-node subdiagrams of the Dynkin diagram. This leads to a completely explicit presentation. Using this we show that St is finitely presented if the rank is > 3 and R is finitely generated as a ring, or if the rank is 3 and R is finitely generated as a module over a subring generated by …
We prove that H^{d-1}(SL_n Z; Q) = 0, where d = n-choose-2 is the cohomological dimension of SL_n Z, and similarly for GL_n Z. We also prove analogous vanishing theorems for cohomology with coefficients in a rational representation of the algebraic group GL_n. These theorems are derived from a presentation of the Steinberg module for SL_n Z whose generators are integral apartment classes, generalizing Manin's presentation for the Steinberg module of SL_2 Z. This presentation was originally constructed by Bykovskii. We give a new topological proof of it.
We study presentations, defined by Sidki, resulting in groups $y(m,n)$ that are conjectured to be finite orthogonal groups of dimension $m+1$ in characteristic two. This conjecture, if true, shows an interesting pattern, possibly connected with Bott periodicity. It would also give new presentations for a large family of finite orthogonal groups in characteristic two, with no generator having the same order as the cyclic group of the field. We generalise the presentation to an infinite version $y(m)$ and explicitly relate this to previous work done by Sidki. The original groups $y(m,n)$ can be …
Markov chains are used to give a purely probabilistic way of understanding the conjugacy classes of the finite symplectic and orthogonal groups in odd characteristic. As a corollary of these methods one obtains a probabilistic proof of Steinberg's count of unipotent matrices and generalizations of formulas of Rudvalis and Shinoda.
Let $(R, Δ)$ be an odd form algebra. We show that the unitary Steinberg group $\mathrm{StU}(R, Δ)$ is a crossed module over the odd unitary group $\mathrm U(R, Δ)$ in two major cases: if the odd form algebra has a free orthogonal hyperbolic family satisfying a local stable rank condition and if the odd form algebra is sufficiently isotropic and quasi-finite. The proof uses only elementary localization techniques in terms of pro-groups.
Given a finite graph G there is a corresponding group given by the presentation with generators the vertices of G and a relation [x,y]=1 for generators x and y precisely when (x,y) is an edge of G. Such groups are known as partially commutative groups (or right-angled Artin groups). In this paper we construct orthogonality theory for graphs with the study of partially commutative groups in mind. The theory developed here provides tools for the study of the structure of the centraliser lattice of partially commutative groups and for their automorphism groups.
This paper constructs a presentation for the orthogonal groups. The amalgam is contained in that constructed by Ralf Gramlich Hendrik Van Maldeghem and arXiv:0708.1583 but it's shorter.
We determine the rings of invariants in the symmetric algebra on the dual of a vector space V over the field of two elements, for the group G of orthogonal transformations preserving a non-singular quadratic form on V. The invariant ring is shown to have a presentation in which the difference between the number of generators and the number of relations is equal to the minimum possibility, namely the dimension of V, and it is shown to be a complete intersection. In particular, the rings of invariants computed here are all Gorenstein and hence Cohen-Macaulay.
We augment the list of finite universal locally toroidal regular polytopes of type {3,3,4,3,3} due to P.McMullen and E.Schulte, adding as well as removing entries. This disproves a related long-standing conjecture. Our new universal polytope is related to a well-known Y-shaped presentation for the sporadic simple group $Fi_{22}$, and admits $S_4\times O_8^+(2){:}S_3$ as the automorphism group. We also discuss further extensions of its quotients in the context of Y-shaped presentations. As well, we note that two known examples of finite universal polytopes of type {3,3,4,3,3} are related to Y-s…
A category of Brauer diagrams, analogous to Turaev's tangle category, is introduced, and a presentation of the category is given; specifically, we prove that seven relations among its four generating homomorphisms suffice to deduce all equations among the morphisms. Full tensor functors are constructed from this category to the category of tensor representations of the orthogonal group $O(V)$ or the symplectic group $Sp(V)$ over any field of characteristic zero. The first and second fundamental theorems of invariant theory for these classical groups are generalised to the category theoretic se…
