It is an immediate consequence of the results by Yiftach and Schlage-Puchta that a presentation with p-deficiency greater than one defines a group with positive rank gradient. By results of Button and Thillaisundaram, a finite presentation with p-deficiency greater than one defines a p-large group. Both Yiftach/Schlage-Puchta and Thillaisundaram extended these results to the p-deficiency one case. In this paper we consider the case when the presentation has p-deficiency less than or equal to one.

Presentations with negative deficiency and largeness

Applications of p-deficiency and p-largeness

We use Schlage-Puchta's concept of p-deficiency and Lackenby's property of p-largeness to show that a group having a finite presentation with p-deficiency greater than 1 is large, which implies that Schlage-Puchta's infinite finitely generated p-groups are not finitely presented. We also show that for all primes p at least 7, any group having a presentation of p-deficiency greater than 1 is Golod-Shafarevich, and has a finite index subgroup which is Golod-Shafarevich for the remaining primes. We also generalise a result of Grigorchuk on Coxeter groups to odd primes.

Largeness of LERF and 1-relator groups

We consider largeness of groups given by a presentation of deficiency 1, where the group is respectively free-by-cyclic, LERF or 1-relator. We give the first examples of (finitely generated free)-by-(infinite cyclic) word hyperbolic groups which are large, show that a LERF deficiency 1 group with first Betti number at least 2 is large or the integers times the integers, and show that 2-generator 1-relator groups where the relator has height 1 obey the dichotomy that either the group is large or all its finite images are metacyclic.

Deficiency and abelianized deficiency of some virtually free groups

Let $Q_m$ be the HNN extension of $\Z/m \times \Z/m$ where the stable letter conjugates the first factor to the second. We explore small presentations of the groups $Γ_{m,n}=Q_m \ast Q_n$. We show that for certain choices of (m,n), for example (2,3), the group $Γ_{m,n}$ has a relation gap unless it admits a presentation with at most 3 defining relations, and we establish restrictions on the possible form of such a presentation. We then associate to each (m,n) a 3-complex with 16 cells. This 3-complex is a counterexample to the D(2) conjecture if $Γ_{m,n}$ has a relation gap.

Constructing presentations of subgroups of right-angled Artin groups

Let $G$ be the right-angled Artin group associated to the flag complex $Σ$ and let $π:G\to\Z$ be its canonical height function. We investigate the presentation theory of the groups $Γ_n=π^{-1}(n\Z)$ and construct an algorithm that, given $n$ and $Σ$, outputs a presentation of optimal deficiency on a minimal generating set, provided $Σ$ is triangle-free; the deficiency tends to infinity as $n\to\infty$ if and only if the corresponding Bestvina-Brady kernel $\bigcap_nΓ_n$ is not finitely presented, and the algorithm detects whether this is the case. Groups of p-deficiency one

The main result of [4] is that all finitely presented groups of p-deficiency greater than one are p-large. Here we prove that groups with a finite presentation of p-deficiency one possess a finite index subgroup that surjects onto . This implies that these groups do not have Kazhdan's property (T). Additionally, we prove that the main result of [4] implies a result of Lackenby [8].

Residual Deficiency

We introduce a new real valued invariant for finitely presented groups called residual deficiency. Its main property is the following. Let G be a finitely presented group. If the residual deficiency of G is greater than one, then G has a finite index subgroup with deficiency greater than one. The latter property is strong. Finite groups of arbitrary deficiency

The deficiency of a group is the maximum over all presentations for that group of the number of generators minus the number of relators. Every finite group has non-positive deficiency. We show that every non-positive integer is the deficiency of a finite group -- in fact, of a finite $p$-group for every prime $p$. This completes Kotschick's classification of the integers which are deficiencies of fundamental groups of compact Kaehler manifolds.

We prove that if a group possesses a deficiency 1 presentation where one of the relators is a commutator then it is the integers times the integers, is large, or is as far as possible from being residually finite. Proving finitely presented groups are large by computer

We present a theoretical algorithm which, given any finite presentation of a group as input, will terminate with answer yes if and only if the group is large. We then implement a practical version of this algorithm using Magma and apply it to a range of presentations. Motivated by problems in topology, we explore the complexity of balanced group presentations. We obtain large lower bounds on the complexity of Andrews-Curtis trivialisations, beginning in rank 4. Full rank presentations and nilpotent groups: structure, Diophantine problem, and genericity

We study finitely generated nilpotent groups $G$ given by full rank finite presentations $\langle A \mid R\rangle$ in the variety $\mathcal{N}_c$ of nilpotent groups of class at most $c$, where $c \geq 2$.
