22 pages. In the previous version of this paper my use of the GP/PARI command "bnfinit" meant that further work was necessary to show that the systems of units produced were indeed fundamental systems. The necessary further work has been included here (see page 10 of the paper for a more detailed explanation)
It is shown that there are no non-trivial fifth-, seventh-, eleventh-, thirteenth- or seventeenth powers in the Fibonacci sequence. For eleventh, thirteenth- and seventeenth powers an alternative (to the usual exhaustive check of products of powers of fundamental units) method is used to overcome the problem of having a large number of independent units and relatively high bounds on their exponents. It is envisaged that the same method can be used to decide the question of the existence of higher small prime powers in the Fibonacci sequence and that the method can be applied to other binary recurrence sequences. The alternative method mentioned may have wider applications.
In this paper, we define a variant of Fibonacci-like sequences that we call prime Fibonacci sequences, where one takes the sum of the previous two terms and returns the smallest odd prime divisor of that sum as the next term. We prove that these sequences always terminate in a power of two but can be extended infinitely to the left.
We show that the product of two consecutive Fibonacci (respectively Lucas) numbers is divisible by the sum of their indices if this sum is a prime number different from 5 and in the form (4r+1)(respectively (4r+3)).
In this article we charaterize the primes Fibonacci numbers of the form $x^2 +ry^2$, where $r = 1,$ $r$ is a prime positive integer number or r is a power of a prime positive integer, using techniques of combinatorics and numbers theory. We also evaluate some distances related to the Fibonacci numbers and function.
In this paper, we define $X$-base Fibonacci-Wieferich prime which is a generalized Wieferich prime where $X$ is a finite set of algebraic numbers. We are going to show that there are infinitely many non-$X$-base Fibonacci-Wieferich primes assuming the $abc$-conjecture of Masser-Oesterlé-Szpiro for number fields. We also provide a new conjecture concerning the rank of free part of abelian group generated by all elements in $X$, and we will use the arithmetic point of view and geometric point of view to give heuristic.
A second order polynomial sequence is of Fibonacci-type $\mathcal{F}_{n}$ (Lucas-type $\mathcal{L}_{n}$) if its Binet formula has a structure similar to that for Fibonacci (Lucas) numbers. Under certain conditions these polynomials are irreducible if and only if $n$ is a prime number. For example, the Fibonacci polynomials, Pell polynomials, Fermat polynomials, Lucas polynomials, Pell-Lucas polynomials, Fermat-Lucas polynomials are irreducible when $n$ is a prime number; and Chebyshev polynomials (second kind), Morgan-Voyce polynomials (Fibonacci type), and Vieta polynomials are reducible when…
Let $ \{F_n\}_{n\ge 0} $ be the sequence of Fibonacci numbers and let $p$ be a prime. For an integer $c$ we write $m_{F,p}(c)$ for the number of distinct representations of $c$ as $F_k-p^\ell$ with $k\ge 2$ and $\ell\ge 0$. We prove that $m_{F,p}(c)\le 4$.
In this paper, we introduce the concept of $F$-perfect number, which is a positive integer $n$ such that $\sum_{d|n,d<n}d^2=3n$. We prove that all the $F$-perfect numbers are of the form $n=F_{2k-1}F_{2k+1}$, where both $F_{2k-1}$ and $F_{2k+1}$ are Fibonacci primes. Moreover, we obtain other interesting results and raise a new conjecture on perfect numbers.
Let $P(m)$ denote the largest prime factor of an integer $m\geq 2$, and put $P(0)=P(1)=1$. For an integer $k\geq 2$, let $(F_{n}^{(k)})_{n\geq 2-k}$ be the $k-$generalized Fibonacci sequence which starts with $0,...,0,1$ ($k$ terms) and each term afterwards is the sum of the $k$ preceding terms. Here, we show that if $n\geq k+2$, then $P(F_n^{(k)})>c\log\log n$, where $c>0$ is an effectively computable constant. Furthermore, we determine all the $k-$Fibonacci numbers $F_n^{(k)}$ whose largest prime factor is less than or equal to 7.
We study generalized Fibonacci sequences $F_{n+1}=PF_n-QF_{n-1}$ with initial values $F_0=0$ and $F_1=1$. Let $P,Q$ be nonzero integers such that $P^2-4Q$ is not a perfect square. We show that if $Q=\pm 1$ then the sequence $\{F_n\}_{n=0}^\infty$ misses a congruence class modulo every prime large enough. On the other hand, if $Q \neq \pm 1$, we prove that (under GRH) the sequence $\{F_n\}_{n=0}^\infty$ hits every congruence class modulo infinitely many primes.
In this paper, we study the diophantine equation ${{σ}_{2}}(n)-{{n}^{2}}=An+B$. We prove that except for finitely many computable solutions, all the solutions to this equation with $(A,B)=({{L}_{2m}},F_{2m}^{2}-1)$ are $n={{F}_{2k+1}}{{F}_{2k+2m+1}}$, where both ${{F}_{2k+1}}$ and ${{F}_{2k+2m+1}}$ are Fibonacci primes. Meanwhile, we show that the twin primes conjecture holds if and only if the equation ${{σ}_{2}}(n)-{{n}^{2}}=2n+5$ has infinitely many solutions.
In this article, we consider the Diophantine equation $σ_{2}(n)-n^2=An+B$ with $A=P^2\pm2$. For some $B$, we show that except for finitely many computable solutions in the range $n\leq(|A|+|B|)^{3}$, all the solutions are expressible in terms of Lucas sequences. Meanwhile, we obtain some results relating to other linear recurrent sequences.
We will describe an algorithm to construct an elliptic curve $E_{f_q}$ over some prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$ such that such that $|E_{f_q}(\mathbb{F}_p)| = f_q$, where $f_q$ is a probable Fibonacci prime for some prime index $q$. The algorithm is a variant of the efficient CM-construction by Br$\ddot{o}$ker and Stevenhagen, which is well suited for Fibonacci primes due to their arithmetic properties. The time complexity of our algorithm is expected to be lower than $\widetilde{O}(\log^3({f_q}))$. The construction process is a series of algorithms, where each is a test for primality.
Carmichael showed for sufficiently large $L$, that $F_L$ has at least one prime divisor that is $\pm 1({\rm mod}\, L)$. For a given $F_L$, we will show that a product of distinct odd prime divisors with that congruence condition is a Fibonacci pseudoprime. Such pseudoprimes can be used in an attempt, here unsuccessful, to find an example of a Baillie-PSW pseudoprime, i.e.\ an odd Fibonacci pseudoprime that is congruent to $\pm 2({\rm mod}\, 5)$ and is also a base-2 pseudoprime.
We show that for primes $p < 10^{14}$ the period length $κ(p^2)$ of the Fibonacci sequence modulo $p^2$ is never equal to its period length modulo $p$. The investigation involves an extensive search by computer. As an application, we establish the general formula $κ(p^n) = κ(p) \cdot p^{n-1}$ for all primes less than $10^{14}$.
In this paper, we define the bi-periodic Fibonacci matrix sequence that represent bi-periodic Fibonacci numbers. Then, we investigate generating function, Binet formula and summations of bi-periodic Fibonacci matrix sequence. After that, we say that some behaviours of bi-periodic Fibonacci numbers also can be obtained by considering properties of this new matrix sequence. Finally, we express that well-known matrix sequences, such as Fibonacci, Pell, $k$-Fibonacci matrix sequences are special cases of this generalized matrix sequence.
In this paper we study the Fibonacci numbers and derive some interesting properties and recurrence relations. We prove some charecterizations for $F_p$, where $p$ is a prime of a certain type. We also define period of a Fibonacci sequence modulo an integer, $m$ and derive certain interesting properties related to them. Afterwards, we derive some new properties of a class of generalized Fibonacci numbers. In the last part of the paper we introduce some generalized Fibonacci polynomial sequences and we derive some results related to them.
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relationship between prime numbers and sums of Fibonacci numbers. One of our main results says that for every sufficiently large integer $k$ there exists a prime number that can be represented as the sum of $k$ different and non-consecutive Fibonacci numbers. This property is closely related to, and based on, a prime number theorem for certain morphic sequences. The proof of such a prime number theorem, combined with a corresponding local result, is the central contribution of this paper, from which we derive the result stated in the beginning. Probl…
Let $(F_n)$ be the sequence of Fibonacci numbers and, for each positive integer $k$, let $\mathcal{P}_k$ be the set of primes $p$ such that $\gcd(p - 1, F_{p - 1}) = k$. We prove that the relative density $\text{r}(\mathcal{P}_k)$ of $\mathcal{P}_k$ exists, and we give a formula for $\text{r}(\mathcal{P}_k)$ in terms of an absolutely convergent series. Furthermore, we give an effective criterion to establish if a given $k$ satisfies $\text{r}(\mathcal{P}_k) > 0$, and we provide upper and lower bounds for the counting function of the set of such $k$'s. As an application of our results, we give …
Based on the structure of Fibonacci sequence, we give a new proof for the irrationality exponents of the Fibonacci real numbers. Moreover, we obtain all the irrationality exponents of the real numbers corresponding to the differences of Fibonacci sequence.
By using Andrews's explicit formulae of the $q$-Fibonacci sequence introduced by Schur, we prove certain congruences of the $q$-Fibonacci sequence which relate the sequence with the original Fibonacci sequence. As a corollary, we show that it yields a transcendental element in the $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra $\mathscr{A}$ of integers modulo infinitely large primes under the generalized Riemann hypothesis.
In this paper, we consider the new family of recurrence sequences of $(q,k)$-generalized Fibonacci numbers. These sequences naturally extend the well-known sequences of $k$-generalized Fibonacci numbers and generalized $k$-order Pell numbers. We shall obtain a Binet-style formula and study the asymptotic behavior of dominant root of characteristic equation. Moreover, we shall prove some auxiliary results about these sequences. In particular, we characterize the first $(q,k)$-generalized Fibonacci numbers in terms of binary sequences.
Let ${\mathcal F}=(F_i:i\ge 0)$ be the sequence of Fibonacci numbers, and $j$ and $e$ be non negative integers. We study the periodicity of the power Fibonacci sequences ${\mathcal F}^e(F_j)=(F_i^e\pmod{F_j}: i\ge 0)$. It is shown that for every $j,e\ge 1$ the sequence ${\mathcal F}^e(F_j)$ is periodic and its periodicity is computed. The result was previously known for ${\mathcal F}(F_j)$; that is, for $e=1$. For $e\in \{1, 2\}$, the values of the normalized residues $ρ_i\equiv F_i^e\pmod{F_j}$ with $0\le ρ_i<F_j-1$ are obtained.
We show that the $p$-adic valuation of the sequence of Fibonacci numbers is a $p$-regular sequence for every prime $p$. For $p \neq 2, 5$, we determine that the rank of this sequence is $α(p) + 1$, where $α(m)$ is the restricted period length of the Fibonacci sequence modulo $m$.
In this paper, we prove identities for members of the k-generalized Fibonacci sequence with negative indices and we apply these identities to deduce an exact formula for its zero-multiplicity.
We show that essentially the Fibonacci sequence is the unique binary recurrence which contains infinitely many three-term arithmetic progressions. A criterion for general linear recurrences having infinitely many three-term arithmetic progressions is also given.
This study applies the binomial, k-binomial, rising k-binomial and falling k-binomial transforms to the modified k-Fibonacci-like sequence. Also, the Binet formulas and generating functions of the above mentioned four transforms are newly found by the recurrence relations.
What is the period of the Fibonacci sequence modulo a prime? The purpose of our brief expository paper is to illustrate an accessible, motivated treatment of this classical topic using only ideas from linear and abstract algebra (rather than the case-by-case analysis found in many papers on the subject, or techniques from graduate number theory). Our methods extend to general recurrences with prime moduli and provide some new insights. And our treatment highlights a nice application of the use of splitting fields that might be suitable to present in undergraduate course in abstract algebra or …
For a prime $p$, let $Z(p)$ be the smallest positive integer $n$ so that $p$ divides $F_{n}$, the $n$th term in the Fibonacci sequence. Paul Bruckman and Peter Anderson conjectured a formula for $ζ(m)$, the density of primes $p$ for which $m | Z(p)$ on the basis of numerical evidence. We prove Bruckman and Anderson's conjecture by studying the algebraic group $G : x^{2} - 5y^{2} = 1$ and relating $Z(p)$ to the order of $α= (3/2,1/2) \in G(\F_{p})$. We are then able to use Galois theory and the Chebotarev density theorem to compute $ζ(m)$.
In this paper, we show that if $p\equiv 1\pmod 4$ is prime, then $4F_p$ admits a representation of the form $u^2-pv^2$ for some integers $u$ and $v$, where $F_n$ is the $n$th Fibonacci number. We prove a similar result when $p\equiv -1\pmod 4$.
In this paper, we introduce the bi-periodic Lucas matrix sequence and present some fundamental properties of this generalized matrix sequence. Moreover, we investigate the important relationships between the bi-periodic Fibonacci and Lucas matrix sequences. We express that some behaviours of bi-periodic Lucas numbers also can be obtained by considering properties of this new matrix sequence. Finally, we say that the matrix sequences as Lucas, $k$-Lucas and Pell-Lucas are special cases of this generalized matrix sequence.
We study ratio limits of the consecutive terms of weighted $n$-generalized Fibonacci sequences generated from arbitrary complex initial conditions by linear recurrences with arbitrary complex weights. We prove that if the characteristic polynomial of such a linear recurrence is asymptotically simple, then the ratio limit exists for any sequence generated from arbitrary nontrivial initial conditions and it is equal to the unique zero of the characteristic polynomial.
We construct the sequences of Fibonacci and Lucas at any quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}\ )$ with $d>0$ square free, noting in general that the properties remain valid as those given by the classical sequences of Fibonacci and Lucas for the case $d = 5$, under the respective variants. For this construction, we use the fundamental unit of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}\ )$ and then we observe the generalizations for any unit of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}\ )$ where, under certain conditions, some of this constructions correspond to $k$-Fibonacci sequence for some $k\in \mathbb{N}$. Of course, for both sequ…
The generalized Fibonacci sequences are sequences $\{f_n\}$ which satisfy the recurrence $f_n(s, t) = sf_{n - 1}(s, t) + tf_{n - 2}(s, t)$ ($s, t \in \mathbb{Z}$) with initial conditions $f_0(s, t) = 0$ and $f_1(s, t) = 1$. In a recent paper, Amdeberhan, Chen, Moll, and Sagan considered some arithmetic properites of the generalized Fibonacci sequence. Specifically, they considered the behavior of analogues of the $p$-adic valuation and the Riemann zeta function. In this paper, we resolve some conjectures which they raised relating to these topics. We also consider the rank modulo $n$ in more d…
In this paper we study how to accelerate the convergence of the ratios (x_n) of generalized Fibonacci sequences. In particular, we provide recurrent formulas in order to generate subsequences (x_{g_n}) for every linear recurrent sequence (g_n) of order 2. Using these formulas we prove that some approximation methods, as secant, Newton, Halley and Householder methods, can generate subsequences of (x_n). Moreover, interesting properties on Fibonacci numbers arise as an application. Finally, we apply all the results to the convergents of a particular continued fraction which represents quadratic …
An interesting open problem in number theory asks whether it is possible to walk to infinity on primes, where each term in the sequence has one more digit than the previous. In this paper, we study its variation where we walk on the Fibonacci sequence. We prove that all walks starting with a Fibonacci number and the following terms are Fibonacci numbers obtained by appending exactly one digit at a time to the right have a length of at most two. In the more general case where we append at most a bounded number of digits each time, we give a formula for the length of the longest walk.
In this paper, we find all integers $c$ having at least two representations as a difference between linear recurrent sequences. This problem is a pillai problem involving Padovan and Fibonacci sequence. The proof of our main theorem uses lower bounds for linear forms in logarithms, properties of continued fractions, and a version of the Baker-Davenport reduction method in Diophantine approximation.
In this paper, as an analogue of the integer case, we study detailedly the period and the rank of the generalized Fibonacci sequence of polynomials over a finite field modulo an arbitrary polynomial. We establish some formulas to compute them, and we also obtain some properties about the quotient of the period and the rank. We find that the polynomial case is much more complicated than the integer case.
In this paper, we show that the concatenation of the Fibonacci sequence is \textit{normal} in base $10$, meaning every string of a given length, $k$, occurs as frequently as every other string of length $k$ (there are as many $1$'s as $2$'s and as many $704$'s and $808$'s). Although we know that almost every number is normal, we can name very few of them. It is still unclear if $e$, $π$, or $\sqrt{2}$ are normal. We show that concatenating the Fibonacci sequence behind a decimal creates a normal number in every base of the form $5^x\times2^y$. We then provide evidence that potentially extends …
In this paper, we study natural numbers $m$ with ${u_{z \pm 1} \equiv -1 \ (m)}$ for a $z \in \mathbb{N}$, where $u_n$ is the $n$th Fibonacci number. Furthermore, we want to show for $m \in \mathbb{N}\setminus\{0,1\}$: $[\forall p \ \text{prim}: p^2 \nmid u_{γ(p)}] \Leftrightarrow [m^2 \mid u_{γ(m)} \Rightarrow m \in \{6,12\}]$.
The Fibonacci sequence is a sequence of numbers that has been studied for hundreds of years. In this paper, we introduce the new sequence S_{k,n} with initial conditions S_{k,0} = 2b and S_{k,1} = bk + a, which is generated by the recurrence relation S_{k,n} = kS_{k,n-1} +S{k,n-2} for n >= 2, where a, b, k are real numbers. Using the sequence S_{k,n}, we introduce and prove some special identities. Also, we deal with the circulant and skew circulant matrices for the sequence S_{k,n}.
