We consider the problem of birationally modifying a morphism of complete varieties to make it a morphism from a nonsingular variety to a normal variety. Our main result is to give a counterexample to this problem. This example also is a counterexample to the related conjecture of Abhyankar on ``weak simultaneous global resolution''.
We also give some positive results. Forinstance, a positive result of this kind is possible if we remove the separatedness condition.
We prove a canonical bundle formula for generically finite morphisms in the setting of generalized pairs (with $\mathbb{R}$-coefficients). This complements Filipazzi's canonical bundle formula for morphisms with connected fibres. It is then applied to obtain a subadjunction formula for log canonical centers of generalized pairs. As another application, we show that the image of an anti-nef log canonical generalized pair has the structure of a numerically trivial log canonical generalized pair. This readily implies a result of Chen--Zhang. Along the way we prove that the Shokurov type convex se…
We show that given a dominant morphism between two smooth varieties of the same dimension, the induced morphism between the formal neighborhoods of two arcs on these varieties is a closed embedding, of codimension given by the order of vanishing along the ramification subscheme.
We consider dominant, generically algebraic, and tamely ramified (if the characteristic is positive) morphisms $π: X/S \to Y/S$, where Y,S are Noetherian and integral and X is a Krull scheme (e.g. normal Noetherian), and study the sheaf of tangent vector fields on Y that lift to tangent vector fields on X. We give an easily computable description of these vector fields using valuations along the critical locus. We generalise to positive characteristic Seidenberg's theorem on lifting tangent vector fields to the normalisation. If $π$ is a blow-up of a coherent ideal I we show that tangent vecto…
In this paper, we prove that given a flat generically smooth morphism between smooth projective varieties with $F$-pure closed fibers, if the source space is Fano, weak Fano or a variety with the nef anti-canonical divisor, then so is the target space. We also show that relative anti-canonical divisors of generically smooth surjective nonconstant morphisms are not nef and big in arbitrary characteristic.
Given a generically étale morphism $f\colon Y\to X$ of quasi-smooth Berkovich curves, we define a different function $δ_f\colon Y\to[0,1]$ that measures the wildness of the topological ramification locus of $f$. This provides a new invariant for studying $f$, which cannot be obtained by the usual reduction techniques. We prove that $δ_f$ is a piecewise monomial function satisfying a balancing condition at type 2 points analogous to the classical Riemann-Hurwitz formula, and show that $δ_f$ can be used to explicitly construct the simultaneous skeletons of $X$ and $Y$. As an application, we use …
We consider a canonical bundle formula for generically finite proper surjective morphisms and obtain subadjunction formulae for minimal log canonical centers of log canonical pairs. We also treat related topics and applications.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. We give a birational characterization of ordinary abelian varieties over $k$: a smooth projective variety $X$ is birational to an ordinary abelian variety if and only if $κ_S(X)=0$ and $b_1(X)=2 \dim X$. We also give a similar characterization of abelian varieties as well: a smooth projective variety $X$ is birational to an abelian variety if and only if $κ(X)=0$, and the Albanese morphism $a: X \to A$ is generically finite. Along the way, we also show that if $κ_S (X)=0$ (or if $κ(X)=0$ and $a$ is generically finite) then the A…
Let $Y$ be a normal and projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ and $V$ a vector bundle over $Y$. We prove that if there exist a $k$-scheme $X$ and a finite surjective morphism $g:X\to Y$ that trivializes $V$ then $V$ is essentially finite.
We prove that a germ of a finite morphism of smooth surfaces is rigid if the germ of its branch curve has one of $ADE$-singularity types and establish a correspondence between the set of rigid germs and the set of Belyi rational functions $f\in \bar{\mathbb Q}(z)$.
We study finite morphisms of varieties and the link between their top multiplicity loci under certain assumptions. More precisely, we focus on how to determine that link in terms of the spaces of arcs of the varieties.
Questions related to deformations of germs of finite morphisms of smooth surfaces are discussed. A classification of the four-sheeted germs of finite covers $F: (U,o')\to (V,o)$ is given up to smooth deformations, where $(U,o')$ and $(V,o)$ are two connected germs of smooth complex-analytic surfaces. The singularity types of their branch curves and the local monodromy groups are investigated also.
Given a finite morphism $φ:Y\to X$ of quasi-smooth Berkovich curves over a complete, algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $0$, we prove a Riemann-Hurwitz formula relating their Euler-Poincaré characteristics (calculated using De Rham cohomology of their overconvergent structure sheaf). The main tools are $p$-adic Runge's theorem together with valuation polygons of analytic functions. Using the results obtained, we provide another point of view on Riemann-Hurwitz formula for finite morphisms of curves over algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic.
For a smooth projective complex variety whose Albanese morphism is finite, we show that every Bridgeland stability condition on its bounded derived category of coherent sheaves is geometric, in the sense that all skyscraper sheaves are stable with the same phase. Furthermore, we describe the stability manifolds of irregular surfaces and abelian threefolds with Picard rank one, and show that they are connected and contractible.
Suppose that X to Y is a generically finite map of nonsingular varieties over a field of characteristic zero, and v is a valuation of the function field of X. We prove that it is possible to perform a sequence of monoidal transforms X' to X and Y' to Y so that X' to Y' is a monomial mapping at the center of v. We deduce from this that a birational morphism of nonsingular varieties can be factored along a valuation by a sequence of blowups and blowdowns with nonsingular centers.
In \cite{K-rig}, a map $β:\mathcal R\to\mathcal{B}el$ from the set $\mathcal R$ of equivalence classes of rigid germs of finite morphisms branched in germs of curves having $ADE$ singularity types onto the set $\mathcal{B}el$ of rational Belyi pairs $f:\mathbb P^1\to\mathbb P^1$ considered up to the action of $PGL(2,\mathbb C)$ was defined. In this article, the inverse images of this map are investigated in terms of monodromies of Belyi pairs.
For any smooth Hurwitz curve $\mathcal{H}_n: \, XY^n+YZ^n+X^nZ=0$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p}$, an explict description of its Weierstrass points for the morphism of lines is presented. As a consequence, the full automorphism group ${\rm Aut}(\mathcal{H}_n)$, as well as the genera of all Galois subcovers of $\mathcal{H}_n$, with $n\neq 3, p^r$, are computed. Finally, a question by F. Torres on plane non nonsingular maximal curves is answered.
We give a geometric description of the pair $(V,p)$, where $V$ is an affine algebraic variety over a non-trivially valued algebraically closed field $K$ with valuation ring $\mathcal{O}_K$ and $p$ is a Zariski dense generically stable type concentrated on $V$, by defining a fully faithful functor to the category of schemes over $\mathcal{O}_K$ with residual dominant morphisms over $\mathcal{O}_K$. We also study a maximum modulus principle on schemes over $\mathcal{O}_K$ and show that the schemes obtained by this functor enjoy it.
Let X be a smooth projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field k. Nori constructed a category of vector bundles on X, called essentially finite vector bundles, which is reminiscent of the category of representations of the fundamental group (in characteristic zero). In fact, this category is equivalent to the category of representations of a pro--finite group scheme which controls all finite torsors. We show that essentially finite vector bundles coincide with those which become trivial after being pulled back by some proper and surjective morphism to X.
In this article we extend Deligne's construction of Grothendieck's six operations on the derived category of torsion sheaves over the étale site of a scheme for morphisms of finite type to a larger class of morphisms. This class includes profinite étale coverings as well as separated morphisms perfectly of finite type
In this paper we prove several lifting theorems for morphisms of tropical curves. We interpret the obstruction to lifting a finite harmonic morphism of augmented metric graphs to a morphism of algebraic curves as the non-vanishing of certain Hurwitz numbers, and we give various conditions under which this obstruction does vanish. In particular we show that any finite harmonic morphism of (non-augmented) metric graphs lifts. We also give various applications of these results. For example, we show that linear equivalence of divisors on a tropical curve C coincides with the equivalence relation g…
We consider a finite étale morphism $f:Y \to X$ of quasi-smooth Berkovich curves over a complete nonarchimedean non-trivially valued field $k$, assumed algebraically closed and of characteristic 0, and a skeleton $Γ_f=(Γ_Y,Γ_X)$ of the morphism $f$. We prove that $Γ_f$ radializes $f$ if and only if $Γ_X$ controls the pushforward of the constant $p$-adic differential equation $f_*(\mathcal{O}_Y,d_Y)$. Furthermore, when $f$ is a finite étale morphism of open unit discs, we prove that $f$ is radial if and only if the number of preimages of a point $x\in X$, counted without multiplicity, only depe…
We define generalizations of the Albanese variety for a projective variety X. The generalized Albanese morphisms X --> Alb_r(X) contract those curves C in X for which the induced morphism Hom(π_1(X),U(r)) --> Hom(π_1(C),U(r)) has a finite image. Thus, they may be interpreted as a U(r)-version of the Shafarevich morphism.
I prove a local finite determinacy result of singular fibres in families. As an application, I generalize finite determinacy results on the fibres of log morphisms and nearby and vanishing cycles sheaves by Illusie and Kisin.
A ringed finite space is a ringed space whose underlying topological space is finite. The category of ringed finite spaces contains, fully faithfully, the category of finite topological spaces and the category of affine schemes. Any ringed space, endowed with a finite open covering, produces a ringed finite space. We introduce the notions of schematic finite space and schematic morphism, showing that they behave, with respect to quasi-coherence, like schemes and morphisms of schemes do. Finally, we construct a fully faithful and essentially surjective functor from a localization of a full subc…
We give an effective criterion for openness of a morphism of schemes of finite type over a field: Over a normal base of dimension n, failure of openness is detected by a vertical component in the n'th fibred power of the morphism. This is a topological analogue of a criterion for flatness that originates with Auslander.
We introduce the notion of a separator for a morphism of schemes f:T\to S; in particular, it is universal among morphisms from T to separated S-schemes. A separator is a local isomorphism; this property conveys the intuition of gluing some affine covering more, in order to make the scheme separated. When f is quasi-separated, its separator exists if and only if the schematic closure of the diagonal projects on both factors by flat morphisms of finite type. In particular, f admits a separator if T is Noetherian Dedekind and S=Spec(Z), or if f is étale of finite presentation and S is normal. Any…
Given a proper morphism X -> S, we show that a large class of objects in the derived category of X naturally form an Artin stack locally of finite presentation over S. This class includes S-flat coherent sheaves and, more generally, contains the collection of all S-flat objects which can appear in the heart of a reasonable sheaf of t-structures on X. In this sense, this is the Mother of all Moduli Spaces (of sheaves). The proof proceeds by studying the finite presentation properties, deformation theory, and Grothendieck existence theorem for objects in the derived category, and then applying A…
Let f be a generically finite morphism from X to Y. The purpose of this paper is to show how the O_Y algebra structure on the push forward of O_X controls algebro-geometric aspects of X like the ring generation of graded rings associated to X and the very ampleness of line bundles on X. As the main application of this we prove some new results for certain regular surfaces X of general type. Precisely, we find the degrees of the generators of the canonical ring of X when the canonical morphism of X is a finite cover of a surface of minimal degree. These results complement results of Ciliberto […
A theorem of B. Green states that if A is a Dedekind ring whose fraction field is a local or global field, every normal projective curve over Spec(A) has a finite morphism to P^1_A. We give a different proof of a variant of this result using intersection theory and work of Moret-Bailly.
We show that for any integer n and any field k of characteristic different from 2 there are at most finitely many isomorphism classes of quadratic morphisms from the projective line over k to itself with a finite postcritical orbit of size n. As a consequence we prove that every postcritically finite quadratic morphism over a field of positive characteristic can be lifted to characteristic zero with the same combinatorial type of postcritical orbit. The associated profinite geometric monodromy group is therefore the same as in characteristic zero, where it can be described explicitly by genera…
We transfer several elementary geometric properties of rigid-analytic spaces to the world of adic spaces, more precisely to the category of adic spaces which are locally of (weakly) finite type over a non-archimedean field. This includes normality, irreducibility (in particular irreducible components) and a Stein factorization theorem. Most notably we show that finite morphisms of adic spaces are open under mild assumptions on the base and target space.
In this article we give a sufficient condition for a morphism $φ$ from a smooth variety $X$ to projective space, finite onto a smooth image, to be deformed to an embedding. This result puts some theorems on deformation of morphisms of curves and surfaces such as $K3$ and general type, obtained by ad hoc methods, in a new, more conceptual light. One of the main interests of our result is to apply it to the construction of smooth varieties in projective space with given invariants. We illustrate this by using our result to construct canonically embedded surfaces with $c_1^2=3p_g-7$ and derive so…
We generalize the motivic incarnation morphism from the theory of arithmetic integration to the relative case, where we work over a base variety S over a field k of characteristic zero. We develop a theory of constructible effective Chow motives over S, and we show how to associate a motive to any S-variety. We give a geometric proof of relative quantifier elimination for pseudo-finite fields, and we construct a morphism from the Grothendieck ring of the theory of pseudo-finite fields over S, to the tensor product of Q with the Grothendieck ring of constructible effective Chow motives. This mo…
Let $X$ be a projective and smooth variety over an algebraically closed field $k$. Let $f:Y\rightarrow X$ be a proper and surjective morphism of $k$-varieties. Assuming that $f$ is separable, we prove that the Tannakian category associated to the vector bundles $E$ on $X$ such that $f^*E$ is trivial is equivalent to the category of representations of a finite and etale group scheme. We give a counterexample to this conclusion in the absence of separability.
Given a scheme S and a flat morphism T \to S of finite presentation we define a surjective S-morphism to an {é}tale and separated S-scheme, which is universal in an obvious sense. Properties of this morphism are deduced from a thorough uses of quotients by equivalence relations whose graph is open and closed.
Let $G$ be an affine algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero. In this paper, we consider finite $G$-equivariant morphisms $F:X\to Y$ of irreducible affine $G$-varieties. First we determine under which conditions on $Y$ the induced map $F^G:X//G\to Y//G$ of quotient varieties is also finite. This result is reformulated in terms of kernels of derivations on $k$-algebras $A\subset B$ such that $B$ is integral over $A$. Second we construct explicitly two examples of finite $G$-equivariant maps $F$. In the first one, $F^G$ is quasifinite but not finite. In the …
Let K be an algebraically closed, complete non-Archimedean field. The purpose of this paper is to carefully study the extent to which finite morphisms of algebraic K-curves are controlled by certain combinatorial objects, called skeleta. A skeleton is a metric graph embedded in the Berkovich analytification of X. A skeleton has the natural structure of a metrized complex of curves. We prove that a finite morphism of K-curves gives rise to a finite harmonic morphism of a suitable choice of skeleta. We use this to give analytic proofs of stronger "skeletonized" versions of some foundational resu…
Let $X$ be a reduced connected $k$-scheme pointed at a rational point $x \in X(k)$. By using tannakian techniques we construct the Galois closure of an essentially finite $k$-morphism $f:Y\to X$ satisfying the condition $H^0(Y,\mathcal{O}_Y)=k$; this Galois closure is a torsor $p:\hat{X}_Y\to X$ dominating $f$ by an $X$-morphism $λ:\hat{X}_Y\to Y$ and universal for this property. Moreover we show that $λ:\hat{X}_Y\to Y$ is a torsor under some finite group scheme we describe. Furthermore we prove that the direct image of an essentially finite vector bundle over $Y$ is still an essentially finit…
We derive transformation rules for test ideals and $F$-singularities under an arbitrary finite surjective morphism $π: Y \to X$ of normal varieties in prime characteristic $p > 0$. The main technique is to relate homomorphisms $F_{*} O_{X} \to O_{X}$, such as Frobenius splittings, to homomorphisms $F_{*} O_{Y} \to O_{Y}$. In the simplest cases, these rules mirror transformation rules for multiplier ideals in characteristic zero. As a corollary, we deduce sufficient conditions which imply that trace is surjective, i.e. $Tr_{Y/X}(π_{*}O_{Y}) = O_{X}$.
We study conditions on a commutative ring R which are equivalent to the following requirement; whenever X is a projective scheme over S = Spec(R) of fiber dimension \leq d for some integer d \geq 0, there is a finite morphism from X to P^d_S over S such that the pullbacks of coordinate hyperplanes give prescribed subschemes of X provided these subschemes satisfy certain natural conditions. We use our results to define a new kind of capacity for adelic subsets of projective schemes X over global fields. This capacity can be used to generalize the converse part of the Fekete-Szegő Theorem.
In this paper we study finite morphisms between irreducible projective varieties in terms of the morphisms they induce between the respective analytifications. The background for the principal result is as follows. Let $V'$ and $V$ be irreducible, projective varieties over an algebraically closed, non- archimedean valued field $k$ and $ϕ$ be a finite morphism $ϕ: V' \to V$. Let $x \in V^{an}(L)$, where $L/k$ is an algebraically closed complete non-archimedean valued field extension. We associate canonically to $x$ an $L$-point of the space $(V \times_k L)^{an}$ which lies on the fiber over $x$…
We show that every smooth projective curve over a finite field k admits a finite tame morphism to the projective line over k. Furthermore, we construct a curve with no such map when k is an infinite perfect field of characteristic two. Our work leads to a refinement of the tame Belyi theorem in positive characteristic, building on results of Saïdi, Sugiyama-Yasuda, and Anbar-Tutdere.
In this article we present a unified way to smooth certain multiple structures called ropes on smooth varieties. We prove that most ropes of arbitrary multiplicity, supported on smooth curves can be smoothed. By a rope being smoothable we mean that the rope is the flat limit of a family of smooth, irreducible curves. To construct a smoothing, we connect, on the one hand, deformations of a finite morphism to projective space and, on the other hand, morphisms from a rope to projective space. We also prove a general result of independent interest, namely, finite covers onto smooth irreducible cur…
Let $k$ be a complete, nontrivially valued non-archimedean field. Given a finite morphism of quasi-smooth $k$-analytic curves that admit finite triangulations, we provide upper bounds for the number of connected components of the ramification locus in terms of topological invariants of the source curve such as its topological genus, the number of points in the boundary and the number of open ends.
