Let $G$ be an affine algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero. In this paper, we consider finite $G$-equivariant morphisms $F:X\to Y$ of irreducible affine $G$-varieties. First we determine under which conditions on $Y$ the induced map $F^G:X//G\to Y//G$ of quotient varieties is also finite. This result is reformulated in terms of kernels of derivations on $k$-algebras $A\subset B$ such that $B$ is integral over $A$. Second we construct explicitly two examples of finite $G$-equivariant maps $F$. In the first one, $F^G$ is quasifinite but not finite. In the second one, $F^G$ is not even quasifinite.
We consider dominant, generically algebraic, and tamely ramified (if the characteristic is positive) morphisms $π: X/S \to Y/S$, where Y,S are Noetherian and integral and X is a Krull scheme (e.g. normal Noetherian), and study the sheaf of tangent vector fields on Y that lift to tangent vector fields on X. We give an easily computable description of these vector fields using valuations along the critical locus. We generalise to positive characteristic Seidenberg's theorem on lifting tangent vector fields to the normalisation. If $π$ is a blow-up of a coherent ideal I we show that tangent vecto…
The first part of this paper is a refinement of Winkelmann's work on invariant rings and quotients of algebraic groups actions on affine varieties, where we take a more geometric point of view. We show that the (algebraic) quotient $X/\!/\!G$ given by the possibly not finitely generated ring of invariants is "almost" an algebraic variety, and that the quotient morphism $π\colon X \to X/\!/\! G$ has a number of nice properties. One of the main difficulties comes from the fact that the quotient morphism is not necessarily surjective. These general results are then refined for actions of the addi…
We study the action of substitution maps between power series rings as an additional algebraic structure on the groups of Hasse--Schmidt derivations. This structure appears as a counterpart of the module structure on classical derivations.
Working over a ground field of characteristic zero, this paper studies the quotient morphism $π:X\to Y$ for an affine $\mathbb{G}_a$-variety $X$ with affine quotient $Y$. It is shown that the degree modules associated to the $\mathbb{G}_a$-action give a uniquely determined sequence of dominant $\mathbb{G}_a$-equivariant morphisms, $X=X_r\to X_{r-1}\to\cdots\to X_1\to X_0=Y$, where $X_i$ is an affine $\mathbb{G}_a$-variety and $X_{i+1}\to X_i$ is birational for each $i\ge 1$. This is the canonical factorization of $π$. We give an algorithm for finding the degree modules associated to the given …

In the paper we answer the following question: for a morphism of varieties (or, more generally, stacks), when the derived category of the base can be recovered from the derived category of the covering variety by means of descent theory? As a corollary, we show that for an action of a reductive group on a scheme, the derived category of equivariant sheaves is equivalent to the category of objects, equipped with an action of the group, in the ordinary derived category.
We describe the moduli spaces of morphisms between polarized complex abelian varieties. The discrete invariants, derived from a Poincare' decomposition of morphisms, are the types of polarizations and of lattice homomorphisms occurring in the decomposition. For a given type of morphisms the moduli variety is irreducible, and is obtained from a product of Siegel spaces modulo the action of a discrete group.
Let $A$ be an integral $k$-algebra of finite type over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. Given a collection ${\cal{D}}$ of $k$-derivations on $A$, that we interpret as algebraic vector fields on $X=Spec(A)$, we study the group spanned by the hypersurfaces $V(f)$ of $X$ invariant for ${\cal{D}}$ modulo the rational first integrals of ${\cal{D}}$. We prove that this group is always a finite $\mathbb{Z}/p$-vector space, and we give an estimate for its dimension. This is to be related to the results of Jouanolou and others on the number of hypersurfaces invariant for a fol…
Assume that two algebraic varieties of finite type over the complex numbers are related by a morphism whose fibers are precisely the orbits for the action of a unipotent group. We show that the two varieties have the same topological Euler characteristic. If they are smooth and the morphism is smooth, we show that the two varieties have the same cohomology groups.
We study mixed surfaces, the minimal resolution S of the singularities of a quotient (C x C)/G of the "square" of a curve by a finite group G of automorphisms that contains elements not preserving the factors. We study them through the "further quotients" by (C x C)/G' where G' contains G. As a first application we prove that if the irregularity is at least 3, then S is also minimal. The result is sharp. The main result is a complete description of the Albanese morphism of S through a determined further quotient (C x C)/G' that is an étale cover of the symmetric square of a curve. In particula…
In this paper we describe the action of the Frobenius morphism on the indecomposable vector bundles on cycles of projective lines. This gives an answer on a question of Paul Monsky, which appeared in his study of the Hilbert--Kunz theory for plane cubic curves.
We describe the action of the different Frobenius morphisms on the cohomology ring of the moduli stack of algebraic vector bundles of fixed rank and determinant on an algebraic curve over a finite field in characteristic p and analyse special situations like vector bundles on the projective line and relations with infinite Grassmannians.
In \cite{K-rig}, a map $β:\mathcal R\to\mathcal{B}el$ from the set $\mathcal R$ of equivalence classes of rigid germs of finite morphisms branched in germs of curves having $ADE$ singularity types onto the set $\mathcal{B}el$ of rational Belyi pairs $f:\mathbb P^1\to\mathbb P^1$ considered up to the action of $PGL(2,\mathbb C)$ was defined. In this article, the inverse images of this map are investigated in terms of monodromies of Belyi pairs.
Let X be a smooth projective variety with the action of the n dimensional torus. The article describes the moduli space of torus equivariant morphisms from stable toric varieties into X as the inverse limit of the GIT quotients of X and their flips when these spaces are enhanced with a naturally associated Deligne-Mumford stack structure. This description is used for constructing a class in the Chow group of the moduli space of dimension dim(X)-n which is invariant to equivariant deformations of X.
Let $X$ be a smooth contractible affine algebraic threefold with a nontrivial algebraic ${\bf C}_+$-action on it. We show that $X$ is rational and the algebraic quotient $X//{\bf C}_+$ is a smooth contractible surface $S$ which is isomorphic to ${\bf C}^2$ in the case when $X$ admits a dominant morphism from a threefold of form $C \times {\bf C}^2$. Furthermore, if the action is free then $X$ is isomorphic to $S \times {\bf C}$ and the action is induced by translation on the second factor. In particular, we have the following criterion: if a smooth contractible affine algebraic threefold $X$ w…
Affine varieties of dimension greater than two can be explored their structures with the help of fibrations by the affine line or plane and quotient morphisms by $\mathbb{G}_a$-actions. We consider $\mathbb{G}_a$-actions on affine threefolds and discuss the structure and the singularities of the quotient surface as well as the singular fibers of the quotient morphism. Relative $\mathbb{G}_a$ and $\mathbb{G}_m$-actions on $\mathbb{A}^4$ or on an affine 4-fold having $\mathbb{A}^3$-fibrations over $\mathbb{A}^1$ are discussed when the actions leave one variable invariant or the fibration invaria…
Let $U$ be a maximal unipotent subgroup of a connected semisimple group $G$ and $U'$ the derived group of $U$. If $X$ is an affine $G$-variety, then the algebra of $U'$-invariants, $k[X]^U'$, is finitely generated and the quotient morphism $π: X \to X//U'$ is well-defined. In this article, we study properties of such quotient morphisms, e.g. the property that all the fibres of $π$ are equidimensional. We also establish an analogue of the Hilbert-Mumford criterion for the null-cones with respect to $U'$-invariants.
We extend the methods of geometric invariant theory to actions of non--reductive groups in the case of homomorphisms between decomposable sheaves whose automorphism groups are non--reductive. Given a linearization of the natural action of the group $\Aut(E)\times\Aut(F)$ on Hom(E,F), a homomorphism is called stable if its orbit with respect to the unipotent radical is contained in the stable locus with respect to the natural reductive subgroup of the automorphism group. We encounter effective numerical conditions for a linearization such that the corresponding open set of semi-stable homomorph…
Let X be a normal variety endowed with an algebraic torus action. An additive group action $α$ on X is called vertical if a general orbit of $α$ is contained in the closure of an orbit of the torus action and the image of the torus normalizes the image of $α$ in Aut(X). Our first result in this paper is a classification of vertical additive group actions on X under the assumption that X is proper over an affine variety. Then we establish a criterion as to when the infinitesimal generators of a finite collection of additive group actions on X generate a finite-dimensional Lie algebra inside the…
We give a classification of normal affine surfaces admitting an algebraic group action with an open orbit. In particular an explicit algebraic description of the affine coordinate rings and the defining equations of such varieties is given. By our methods we recover many known results, e.g. the classification of normal affine surfaces with a `big' open orbit of Gizatullin and Popov or some of the classification results of Danilov-Gizatullin, Bertin and others.
In this paper we prove several lifting theorems for morphisms of tropical curves. We interpret the obstruction to lifting a finite harmonic morphism of augmented metric graphs to a morphism of algebraic curves as the non-vanishing of certain Hurwitz numbers, and we give various conditions under which this obstruction does vanish. In particular we show that any finite harmonic morphism of (non-augmented) metric graphs lifts. We also give various applications of these results. For example, we show that linear equivalence of divisors on a tropical curve C coincides with the equivalence relation g…
We prove a "Generic Equivalence Theorem which says that two affine morphisms $p: S \to Y$ and $q: T \to Y$ of varieties with isomorphic (closed) fibers become isomorphic under a dominant etale base change $ϕ: U \to Y$. A special case is the following result. Call a morphism $ϕ: X \to Y$ a "fibration with fiber $F$" if $ϕ$ is flat and all fibers are (reduced and) isomorphic to $F$. Then an affine fibration with fiber $F$ admits an etale dominant morphism $μ: U \to Y$ such that the pull-back is a trivial fiber bundle: $U\times_Y X \simeq U\times F$. As an application we give short proofs of the …
This article concerns properties of mixed $\ell$-adic complexes on varieties over finite fields, related to the action of the Frobenius automorphism. We establish a fiberwise criterion for the semisimplicity and Frobenius semisimplicity of the direct image complex under a proper morphism of varieties over a finite field. We conjecture that the direct image of the intersection complex on the domain is always semisimple and Frobenius semisimple; this conjecture would imply that a strong form of the decomposition theorem of Beilinson-Bernstein-Deligne-Gabber is valid over finite fields. We prove …
Let $X$ be an affine algebraic variety endowed with an action of complexity one of an algebraic torus $\mathbb{T}$. It is well known that homogeneous locally nilpotent derivations on the algebra of regular functions $\mathbb{K}[X]$ can be described in terms of proper polyhedral divisors corresponding to $\mathbb{T}$-variety $X$. We prove that homogeneous locally nilpotent derivations commute if an only if some combinatorial criterion holds. These results are used to describe actions of unipotent groups of dimension two on affine $\mathbb{T}$-varieties.
We establish a one-to-one correspondence between rational multiplicative group actions on an algebraic variety $X$ and derivations $\partial\colon K_X\to K_X$ of the field of fractions $K_X$ of $X$ satisfying that there exists a generating set $\{a_i\}_{i\in I}$ of $K_X$ as a field such that $\partial(a_i)=λ_i a_i$ with $λ_i \in \mathbb{Z}$ for all $i\in I$. We call such derivations rational semisimple. Furthermore, we also prove the existence of a rational slice for every rational semisimple derivation, i.e., an element $s\in K_X$ such that $\partial(s)=s$. By analogy with the case of additiv…
Let X be an affine T-variety. We study two different quotients for the action of T on X: the toric Chow quotient X/_CT and the toric Hilbert scheme H. We introduce a notion of the main component H_0 of H which parameterizes general T-orbit closures in X and their flat limits. The main component U_0 of the universal family U over H is a preimage of H_0. We define an analogue of a universal family W_X over the main component of the X/_CT. We show that the toric Chow morphism restricted on the main components lifts to a birational projective morphism from U_0 to W_X. The variety W_X also provides…
We prove that for an abelian group $G$ of order $n$ the morphism $ φ\colon \mathbf{P}(V^*)\longrightarrow \mathbf{P} ((\mathrm{sym}^n V^*)^G)$ defined by $φ([f]) = [\prod_{σ\in G} σ\cdot f ]$ is nondegenerate for every finite-dimensional representation $V$ of $G$ if and only if either $n$ is a prime number or $n=4$.
We study the action of irreducible derivations X on some Hilbert's quasi-regular algebras QRH of germes at 0 of analytic functions on (U,0), where U is a semi-algebraic set: that is, we show that these algebras are X-finite or locally X-finite, ie. the degre of the integral projection is finite by restriction to fibers of elements of QRH, and the differential ideals are noetherian or locally noetherian. We then give an important application of this material to the Hilbert's 16th problem about limit cycles: there is no accumulation of limit cycles on hyperbolic polycycles, inside compact analyt…
Motivated by the study of the structure of algebraic actions the additive group on affine threefolds X, we consider a special class of such varieties whose algebraic quotient morphisms X $\rightarrow$ X//Ga restrict to principal homogeneous bundles over the complement of a smooth point of the quotient. We establish basic general properties of these varieties and construct families of examples illustrating their rich geometry. In particular, we give a complete classification of a natural subclass consisting of threefolds X endowed with proper Ga-actions, whose algebraic quotient morphisms $π$ :…
A new relation between Prym varieties of arbitrary morphisms of algebraic curves and integrable systems is discovered. The action of maximal commutative subalgebras of the formal loop algebra of GL(n) defined on certain infinite-dimensional Grassmannians is studied. It is proved that every finite-dimensional orbit of the action of traceless elements of these commutative Lie algebras is isomorphic to the Prym variety associated with a morphism of algebraic curves. Conversely, it is shown that every Prym variety can be realized as a finite-dimensional orbit of the action of traceless diagonal el…
In the context of almost complex quantization, a natural generalization of algebro-geometric linear series on a compact symplectic manifold has been proposed. Here we suppose given a compatible action of a finite group and consider the linear subseries associated to the irreducible representations of $G$, give conditions under which these are base-point free and study properties of the associated projective morphisms. The results obtained are new even in the complex projective case.
We first study the descent theory of line bundles under a morphism which is tors or under a group stack and then use this technical result to determine the exact structure of $\Pic(\M_G)$ where $G=\SL_r/μ_s$ (we include a minor modification to explain the genus 0 case).
In this paper we deal with a Hamiltonian action of a reductive algebraic group $G$ on an irreducible normal affine Poisson variety $X$. We study the invariant moment map $ψ_{G,X}:X\to \g$, that is, the composition of the moment map $μ_{G,X}:X\to g:=Lie(G)$ and the quotient morphism $g\to g\quo G$. We obtain some results on the dimensions of fibers of $ψ_{G,X}$ and the corresponding morphism of quotients $X\quo G\to g\quo G$. We also study the "Stein factorisation" of $ψ_{G,X}$. Namely, let $C_{G,X}$ denote the spectrum of the integral closure of $ψ_{G,X}^*(K[g]^G)$ in $K(X)^G$. We investigate …
For an affine spherical homogeneous space G/H of a connected semisimple algebraic group G, we consider the factorization morphism by the action on G/H of a maximal unipotent subgroup of G. We prove that this morphism is equidimensional if and only if the weight semigroup of G/H satisfies some simple condition.
