We describe the action of the different Frobenius morphisms on the cohomology ring of the moduli stack of algebraic vector bundles of fixed rank and determinant on an algebraic curve over a finite field in characteristic p and analyse special situations like vector bundles on the projective line and relations with infinite Grassmannians.
We show that the logarithm $\log_q$ of the Frobenius morphism $x\to x^q$ is given by the formula $x\to x\log x$ (the natural logarithm). In particular, it does not depend on $q$. This is the explicit (although heuristical) formula for the operator conjectured by Hilbert whose eigenvalues coincide with the zeroes of the zeta function.
In this paper we describe the action of the Frobenius morphism on the indecomposable vector bundles on cycles of projective lines. This gives an answer on a question of Paul Monsky, which appeared in his study of the Hilbert--Kunz theory for plane cubic curves.
The geometric Frobenius morphism on smooth varieties is an fppf-fiber bundle. We study representations of the structure group scheme. In particular, we describe irreducible representations and compute its Grothendieck ring of finite dimensional representations.
In a work of Costa and Miró-Roig state the following conjecture: Every smooth complete toric Fano variety has a full strongly exceptional collection of line bundles. The goal of this article is to prove it for toric Fano 3-folds.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over an algebraically field $k$ with ${\rm char}(k)=p>0$ and $F:X\to X_1$ be the relative Frobenius morphism. When ${\rm dim}(X)=1$, we prove that $F_*W$ is a stable bundle for any stable bundle $W$ (Theorem \ref{thm1.3}). As a step to study the question for higher dimensional $X$, we generalize the canonical filtration (defined by Joshi-Ramanan-Xia-Yu for curves) to higher dimensional $X$ (Theorem \ref{thm2.6}).
Let X be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ defined over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic $p>0$ and let $F:X\rightarrow X_{1}$ be the relative k-linear Frobenius map. We prove (Theorem 1.1) E is a stable bundle on $X_{1}$ with $I(E)= (p-1)(2g-2)$ if and only if E is the direct image of some stable bundle W on $X$.
This article is the expanded version of a talk given at the conference: Algebraic geometry in East Asia 2008, Seoul. In this notes, I intend to give a brief survey of results on the behavior of semi-stable bundles under the Frobenius pullback and direct images. Some results are new.
We investigate the $W_2(k)$-liftability of singular schemes. We prove constructibility of the locus of $W_2(k)$-liftable schemes in a flat family $X \to S$. Moreover, we construct an explicit $W_2(k)$-lifting of a Frobenius split scheme $X$ over a perfect field $k$, reproving Bhatt's existential result. Furthermore, we study existence of liftings of the Frobenius morphism. In particular, we prove that in dimension $n \geq 4$ ordinary double points do not admit a $W_2(k)$-lifting compatible with Frobenius, and that canonical surface singularities are Frobenius liftable. Combined with Bhatt's re…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety of dimension $n$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ with ${\rm char}(k)=p>0$ and $F:X\to X_1$ be the relative Frobenius morphism. For any vector bundle $W$ on $X$, we prove that instability of $F_*W$ is bounded by instability of $W\otimes{\rm T}^{\ell}(Ω^1_X)$ ($0\le \ell\le n(p-1)$)(Corollary \ref{cor3.8}). When $X$ is a smooth projective curve of genus $g\ge 2$, it implies $F_*W$ being stable whenever $W$ is stable.
We give criteria for certain morphisms from an algebraic stack to a (not necessarily algebraic) stack to admit an (appropriately defined) scheme-theoretic image. We apply our criteria to show that certain natural moduli stacks of local Galois representations are algebraic (or Ind-algebraic) stacks.
Let X be a smooth projective curve of genus g \textgreater{}1 defined over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p \textgreater{}0. For p sufficiently large (explicitly given in terms of r,g) we construct an atlas for the locus of all Frobenius-destabilized bundles (i.e. we construct all Frobenius-destabilized bundles of degree zero up to isomorphism). This is done by exhibiting a surjective morphism from a certain Quot-scheme onto the locus of stable Frobenius-destabilized bundles. Further we show that there is a bijective correspondence between the set of stable vector bundles E …
We compute decomposition of Frobenius push-forwards of line bundles on quadrics into a direct sum of line bundles and spinor bundles. As an application we show when the Frobenius push-forward gives a tilting bundle and we apply it to study D-modules on quadrics.
For a toric Deligne-Mumford (DM) stack, we can consider a certain generalization of the Frobenius endomorphism. For such an endomorphism on a two-dimensional toric DM stack, we show that the push-forward of the structure sheaf generates the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on the toric DM stack. We also choose a full strong exceptional collection from the set of direct summands of the push-forward in several examples of two dimensional toric DM orbifolds.
We combine the Bondal-Uehara method for producing exceptional collections on toric varieties with a result of the first author and Favero to expand the set of varieties satisfying Orlov's Conjecture on derived dimension.
We show how to construct tilting bundles for a class of smooth projective varieties using characteristic $p$ methods. Given such a variety $X$, reduce it modulo a prime number and consider the direct image of the structure sheaf under the Frobenius morphism. We prove that under suitable restrictions on the characteristic, these direct images are tilting bundles for some toric Fano varieties, Del Pezzo surfaces, and flag varieties $G/B$ of type $A_2$ and $B_2$.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective algebraic variety over $Z/p$, which has a flat lift to a scheme $X'$ over $Z/p^2$. If the absolute Frobenius morphism $F$ on $X$ lifts to a morphism on $X'$, then an old trick by Mazur shows that push-down of the de Rham complex under $F$ decomposes. We show that the quasi-isomorphism in question is split. This is then applied to toric varieties (where a glueing argument gives lifting of Frobenius to $Z/p^2$) and we derive natural characteristic $p$ proofs of Bott vanishing and degeneration of the Danilov spectral sequence. For flag varieties we obtain generaliza…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g(X)\geq 1$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ and $F_{X/k}:X\rightarrow X^{(1)}$ be the relative Frobenius morphism. Let $\mathfrak{M}^{s(ss)}_X(r,d)$ (resp. $\mathfrak{M}^{s(ss)}_{X^{(1)}}(r\cdot p,d+r(p-1)(g-1))$) be the moduli space of (semi)-stable vector bundles of rank $r$ (resp. $r\cdot p$) and degree $d$ (resp. $d+r(p-1)(g-1)$) on $X$ (resp. $X^{(1)}$). We show that the set-theoretic map $S^{ss}_{\mathrm{Frob}}:\mathfrak{M}^{ss}_X(r,d)\rightarrow\mathfrak{M}^{ss}_{X^{(1)}}(r\cdot p,d+r(p-1)(g-1))$ induced by $[…
In this paper, which is the sequel to arXiv:1410.3742, we study the Frobenius pushforward of the structure sheaf on the adjoint varieties in type ${\bf A}_3$ and ${\bf A}_4$. We show that this pushforward sheaf decomposes into a direct sum of indecomposable bundles and explicitly determine this set that does not depend of the characteristic. In accordance with the results of arXiv:0707.0913, this set forms a strong full exceptional collection in the derived category of coherent sheaves. These computations lead to a natural conjectural answer in the general case that we state at the end.
This article concerns properties of mixed $\ell$-adic complexes on varieties over finite fields, related to the action of the Frobenius automorphism. We establish a fiberwise criterion for the semisimplicity and Frobenius semisimplicity of the direct image complex under a proper morphism of varieties over a finite field. We conjecture that the direct image of the intersection complex on the domain is always semisimple and Frobenius semisimple; this conjecture would imply that a strong form of the decomposition theorem of Beilinson-Bernstein-Deligne-Gabber is valid over finite fields. We prove …
Let $X$ be a projective scheme over a field. We show that the vanishing cohomology of any sequence of coherent sheaves is closely related to vanishing under pullbacks by the Frobenius morphism. We also compare various definitions of ample locally free sheaf and show that the vanishing given by the Frobenius morphism is, in a certain sense, the strongest possible. Our work can be viewed as various generalizations of the Serre Vanishing Theorem.
Vector bundles in positive characteristics have a tendency to be destabilized after pulling back by the Frobenius morphism. In this paper, we closely examine vector bundles over curves that are, in an appropriate sense, maximally destabilized by the Frobenius morphism. Then we prove that such bundles of rank 2 exist over any curve in characteristic 3, and are unique up to twisting by a line bundle. We also give an application of such bundles to the study of ample vector bundles, which is valid in all characteristics.
Let k be a perfect field of characteristic p>0 and W the ring of Witt vectors of k. In this article, we give a new proof of the Frobenius descent for convergent isocrystals on a variety over k relative to W. This proof allows us to deduce an analogue of the de Rham complexes comparaison theorem of Berthelot without assuming a lifting of the Frobenius morphism. As an application, we prove a version of Berthelot's conjecture on the preservation of convergent isocrystals under the higher direct image by a smooth proper morphism of k-varieties.
Motivated by applications in moduli theory, we introduce a flexible and powerful language for expressing lower bounds on relative dimension of morphisms of schemes, and more generally of algebraic stacks. We show that the theory is robust and applies to a wide range of situations. Consequently, we obtain simple tools for making dimension-based deformation arguments on moduli spaces. Additionally, in a complementary direction we develop the basic properties of codimension for algebraic stacks. One of our goals is to provide a comprehensive toolkit for working transparently with dimension statem…
Let $R$ be the homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}=\operatorname{Gr}(2,n)$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. In this paper we give a completely characteristic free description of the decomposition of $R$, considered as a graded $R^p$-module, into indecomposables ("Frobenius summands"). As a corollary we obtain a similar decomposition for the Frobenius pushforward of the structure sheaf of $\mathbb{G}$ and we obtain in particular that this pushforward is almost never a tilting bundle. On the other hand we show that $R$ provides a "noncom…
In the paper we answer the following question: for a morphism of varieties (or, more generally, stacks), when the derived category of the base can be recovered from the derived category of the covering variety by means of descent theory? As a corollary, we show that for an action of a reductive group on a scheme, the derived category of equivariant sheaves is equivalent to the category of objects, equipped with an action of the group, in the ordinary derived category.
This article is the first one of a series of three articles devoted to direct images of isocrystals: here we consider isocrystals without Frobenius structure; in the second one (resp. the third one), we will introduce a Frobenius structure in the convergent (resp. overconvergent) context. For a liftable proper smooth morphism we establish the overconvergence of direct images, owing to a base change theorem for a proper morphism between rigid analytic spaces. This result partially answers a conjecture of Berthelot on the overconvergence of direct images under a proper smooth morphism.
Let X be a smooth projective curve over an algebraic closed field of characteristic p and F be the Frobenius morphism of X. Here, I give a negative answer to the guess that the length of the Harder-Narasimhan of F*W is not bigger than p, where W is a semistable bundle on X.
Let $R$ be the homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}=Gr(2,n)$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p \geq \max\{n-2,3\}$. In this paper we give a description of the decomposition of $R$, considered as graded $R^{p^r}$-module, for $r \geq 2$. This is a companion paper to our earlier paper, where the case $r=1$ was treated, and taken together, our results imply that $R$ has finite F-representation type (FFRT). Though it is expected that all rings of invariants for reductive groups have FFRT, ours is the first non-trivial example of such a ring f…
Weak morphisms of non-abelian complexes of length 2, or crossed modules, are morphisms of the associated 2-group stacks, or gr-stacks. We present a full description of the weak morphisms in terms of diagrams we call butterflies. We give a complete description of the resulting bicategory of crossed modules, which we show is fibered and biequivalent to the 2-stack of 2-group stacks. As a consequence we obtain a complete characterization of the non-abelian derived category of complexes of length 2. Deligne's analogous theorem in the case of Picard stacks and abelian sheaves becomes an immediate c…
In this paper, given a semisimple algebraic group $\bf G$ of rank 2, we construct a special semiorthogonal decomposition in the derived category of coherent sheaves on the flag variety ${\bf G}/{\bf B}$. These decompositions are defined over the localization ${\mathbb Z}_{\rm S}$, where $\rm S$ is the set of bad primes for $\bf G$, while their block structure is compatible with the Bruhat order on Schubert varieties. The non-standard $t$-structures on ${\rm D}^b({\bf G}/{\bf B})$ defined by these decompositions are self-dual with respect to the duality ${\mathcal RHom}_{{\bf G}/{\bf B}}(-,ω_{{…
We extend the definition of the Chen-Ruan cohomology ring to smooth, proper, tame, Deligne-Mumford stacks over fields of positive characteristic and prove that a modified version of the Frobenius action preserves the product.
We show that the pushout of an étale morphism and an open immersion exists in the category of algebraic stacks and show that such pushouts behave similarly to the gluing of two open substacks. For example, quasi-coherent sheaves on the pushout can be described by a simple gluing procedure. We then outline a powerful dévissage method for representable étale morphisms using such pushouts. We also give a variant of the dévissage method for representable quasi-finite flat morphisms.
We generalize Luna's fundamental lemma to smooth morphisms between stacks with good moduli spaces. We also give a precise condition for when it holds for non-smooth morphisms and versions for coherent sheaves and complexes. This generalizes earlier results by Alper, Abramovich--Temkin, Edidin and Nevins.
The purpose of this paper is to describe several applications of finiteness properties of $F$-finite $F$-modules recently discovered by M. Hochster to the study of Frobenius maps on injective hulls, Frobenius near-splittings and to the nature of morphisms of $F$-finite $F$-modules. Among the results in the paper we show that morphisms of $F$-finite $F$-modules have a particularly simple form, and we show that certain Frobenius near-splittings have finitely many compatible submodules, thus generalizing a result of M. Blickle and G. Böckle to the non-$F$-finite case.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$, $F_X:X\rightarrow X$ the absolute Frobenius morphism. Let $\M^s_X(r,d)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on $X$. We study the Frobenius stratification of $\M^s_X(3,0)$ in terms of Harder-Narasimhan polygons of Frobenius pull backs of stable vector bundles and obtain the irreducibility and dimension of each non-empty Frobenius stratum in the case $(p,g)=(3,2)$.
Let π: X -> S be a morphism of algebraic stacks that is locally of finite presentation with affine stabilizers. We prove that there is an algebraic S-stack, the Hilbert stack, parameterizing proper algebraic stacks mapping quasi-finitely to X. This was previously unknown, even for a morphism of schemes.
The introduction is modified in the revised version. Also, many typos and errors were corrected. Let $W\to C$ be degeneration of smooth varieties so that the special fiber has normal crossing singularity. In this paper, we first constructed the stack of expanded degenerations of $W$. We then constructed the moduli space of stable morphisms to this stack, which provides a degeneration of the moduli spaces of stable morphisms associated to $W/C$. Using similar technique, for a pair of smooth variety and a smooth divisor $(Z,D)$, we constructed the stack of expanded relative pairs and then the mo…
In this Part II, D(10.2), of D(10), we take D(10.1) (arXiv:1302.2054 [math.AG]) as the foundation to define the notion of $Z$-semistable morphisms from general Azumaya nodal curves, of genus $\ge 2$, with a fundamental module to a projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold and show that the moduli stack of such $Z$-semistable morphisms of a fixed type is compact. This gives us a counter moduli stack to D-strings as the moduli stack of stable maps in Gromov-Witten theory to the fundamental string. It serves and prepares for us the basis toward a new invariant of Calabi-Yau 3-fold that captures soft-D-string …
Let X be a smooth projective curve of genus g>1 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. Pull-back by the (absolute) Frobenius on X only defines a rational morphism on the moduli scheme of rank-2 vector bundles on X, because the Frobenius pull-back may destory stability of a vector bundle. This paper introduces and studies a Harder-Narasimhan type stratification on the moduli scheme and proves that the family of semi-stable rank-2 vector bundles (with a fixed degree) whose Frobenius pull-back are not semi-stable is parameterized by an irreducible subscheme of dimension 3g-4.
