Let $A$ be an integral $k$-algebra of finite type over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. Given a collection ${\cal{D}}$ of $k$-derivations on $A$, that we interpret as algebraic vector fields on $X=Spec(A)$, we study the group spanned by the hypersurfaces $V(f)$ of $X$ invariant for ${\cal{D}}$ modulo the rational first integrals of ${\cal{D}}$. We prove that this group is always a finite $\mathbb{Z}/p$-vector space, and we give an estimate for its dimension. This is to be related to the results of Jouanolou and others on the number of hypersurfaces invariant for a foliation of codimension 1. As an application, given a $k$-algebra $B$ between $A^p$ and $A$, we show that the kernel of the pull-back morphism $Pic(B)\rightarrow Pic(A)$ is a finite $\mathbb{Z}/p$-vector space. In particular, if $A$ is a UFD, then the Picard group of $B$ is finite.
Several papers have been written studying unexpected hypersurfaces. We say a finite set of points Z admits unexpected hypersurfaces if a general union of fat linear subspaces imposes less that the expected number of conditions on the ideal of Z. In this paper, we introduce the concept of a very unexpected hypersurface. This is a stronger condition which takes into account an explanation for some hypersurfaces previously considered unexpected. We then develop a duality theory to relate the study of very unexpected hypersurfaces to the derivations of dual hyperplane arrangements. This allows us …
We describe homogeneous locally nilpotent derivations of the algebra of regular functions for a class of affine trinomial hypersurfaces. This class comprises all non-factorial trinomial hypersurfaces.
We provide an explicit description of homogeneous locally nilpotent derivations of the algebra of regular functions on affine trinomial hypersurfaces. As an application, we describe the set of roots of trinomial algebras.
In this paper, we discuss classical derivation of the residue integral representation of the d=1 rational Gromov-Witten invariants of projective hypersurfaces that followed from localization technique.
The main purpose of this article is to lay the foundations for a classification of isolated hypersurface singularities in positive characteristic. Although our article is in the spirit of Arnol'd who classified real an complex hypersurfaces in the 1970's with respect to right equivalence, several new phenomena occur in positive characteristic. Already the notion of isolated singularity is different for right resp. contact equivalence over fields of characteristic other than zero. The heart of this paper consists of the study of different notions of non-degeneracy and the associated piecewise f…
Assume that there exists a hypersurface singularity which cannot be resolved by iterated monoidal transformations in positive characteristic. We show that in the set of defining functions of hypersurface singularities which cannot be resolved, we can find a function satisfying very strong conditions. By these conditions we may be able to deduce a contradiction under the above assumption. Besides, we introduce fundamental concepts for the study of resolution of singularities of germs such as space germs, iterated analytic monoidal transforms with a normal crossing, Weierstrass representations, …
We study singularities f in K[[x_1,...,x_n]] over an algebraically closed field K of arbitrary characteristic with respect to right respectively contact equivalence, and we establish that the finiteness of the Milnor respectively the Tjurina number is equivalent to finite determinacy. We give improved bounds for the degree of determinacy in positive characteristic. Moreover, we consider different non-degeneracy conditions of Kouchnirenko, Wall and Beelen-Pellikaan in positive characteristic, and we show that planar Newton non-degenerate singularities satisfy Milnor's formula mu=2 delta-r+1. Th…
We prove that a general Fano hypersurface in a projective space over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic is separably rationally connected.
An affine algebraic variety $X$ is rigid if the algebra of regular functions ${\mathbb K}[X]$ admits no nonzero locally nilpotent derivation. We prove that a factorial trinomial hypersurface is rigid if and only if every exponent in the trinomial is at least 2.
We show that if a cubic hypersurface with positive dual defect over the complex number field is not a cone, then either the hypersurface coincides with the secant variety of the singular locus, or the hypersurface contains a linear subvariety of dimension greater than the dual defect such that the intersection of the singular locus and a general contact locus is contained in the linear subvariety.
The Chern class of the sheaf of logarithmic derivations along a simple normal crossing divisor equals the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of the complement of the divisor. We extend this equality to more general divisors, which are locally analytically isomorphic to free hyperplane arrangements.
We show that the Quantum Lefschetz Hyperplane Principle can fail for certain orbifold hypersurfaces and complete intersections. It can fail even for orbifold hypersurfaces defined by a section of an ample line bundle.
We show the existence of systems of n polynomial equations in n variables, with a total of n+k+1 distinct monomial terms, possessing [n/k+1]^k nondegenerate positive solutions. (Here, [x] is the integer part of a positive number x.) This shows that the recent upper bound of (e^2+3)/4 2^{\binom{k}{2}} n^k for the number of nondegenerate positive solutions is asymptotically sharp for fixed k and large n. We also adapt a method of Perrucci to show that there are fewer than (e^2+3)/4 2^{\binom{k}{2}} 2^n n^k connected components in a smooth hypersurface in the positive orthant of R^n defined by a …
In this paper, we study higher derivations of Jacobian type in positive characteristic. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $(n-1)$-tuples of polynomials to be extendable in the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over an integral domain $R$ of positive characteristic. In particular, we give characterizations of variables and univariate polynomials by using the terms of higher derivations of Jacobian type in the polynomial ring in two variables over a field of positive characteristic.
The F-pure threshold is a positive characteristic numerical invariant, analogous to the log canonical threshold in characteristic zero. We compute the F-pure threshold of the affine cone over a Calabi-Yau hypersurface, and relate it to the order of vanishing of the Hasse invariant on the versal deformation space of the hypersurface.
Let $Y$ be a smooth hypersurface in a projective irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold X of dimension 2n. The characteristic foliation $F$ is the kernel of the symplectic form restricted to Y. In this article we prove that a generic leaf of the characteristic foliation is dense in Y if Y has positive Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki square.
We show that on a certain hypersurface in P3 there is a (q3 + q2 + q + 1)q+1-symmetric configuration (resp. a ((q3 + 1)(q2 + 1)q+1, (q3 + 1)(q + 1)q2+1)) -configuration) made up of the rational points over Fq (resp. over Fq2) and the lines over Fq (resp. the lines over Fq2). We also determine the structure of a Lefschetz pencil made by using a line from these lines.
The paper is motivated on the open problem of resolution of singularities in positive characteristic. The aim is to present a form of induction which is different from that used by Hironaka. In characteristic zero induction is formulated by restriction to smooth hypersurfaces (hypersurfaces of maximal contact). Our alternative approach, introduced here, replaces restrictions to smooth sub-schemes by generic projections on smooth schemes of smaller dimension. We also introduce a generalization of the discriminant, and our result makes use of the elimination theory. In the case of fields of char…

We consider the closed locus of $r$-tuples of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^r$ with positive dimensional intersection, and show in a large range of degrees that its largest component is the locus of $r$-tuples of hypersurfaces whose intersection contains a line. We then apply our methods to obtain new results on the largest components of the locus of hypersurfaces with positive dimensional singular loci and the locus of smooth hypersurfaces with a higher dimensional family of lines through a point than expected.
In characteristic zero, the residual order constitutes, after the local multiplicity, the second key invariant for the resolution of singularities. It is defined as the order of the coefficient ideal in a local hypersurface of maximal contact, minus the exceptional multiplicities. It does not increase under blowup in permissible centers as long as the local multiplicity remains constant. In positive characteristic, however, the residual order (defined now as the maximum over all smooth local hypersurfaces) may increase under blowup. In the article we analyze in detail the circumstances when th…
We consider the Lie algebra of derivations of a zero dimensional local complex algebra. We describe an inequality involving the embedding dimension, the order, and the first deviation that forces this Lie algebra to be solvable. Our result was motivated by and generalizes the solvability of the Yau algebra of an isolated hypersurface singularity.
We derive the combinatorial representations of Picard group and deformation space of anti-canonical hypersurfaces of a toric variety using techniques in toric geometry. The mirror cohomology correspondence in the context of mirror symmetry is established for a pair of Calabi-Yau (CY) ${\sf n}$-spaces in toric varieties defined by reflexive polytopes for an arbitrary dimension ${\sf n}$. We further identify the Kahler cone of the toric variety and degeneration cone of CY hypersurfaces, by which the Kahler cone and degeneration cone for a mirror CY pair are interchangeable under mirror symmetry.…
Let $n$ be a positive even integer and $d$ a positive integer . To every complete family $Z$ of n dimensional degree d hypersurfaces in the projective space with isolated A-D-E singularities we construct according to an idea of Carlson-Toledo a Deligne-Mumford stack $\bar Z$ whose moduli space is $Z$ such that the monodromy representation extends. We study the corresponding periods mapping and establish an infinitesimal Torelli theorem along the isosingular strata of lZ$ under transversality assumptions. We apply this result to prove Steiness of the universal covering space of $\bar Z$.
In this paper we give a positive answer to a question of Nash concerning the arc space of a singularity, for the class of quasi-ordinary hypersurface singularities, extending to this case previous results and techniques of Shihoko Ishii.
A projective hypersurface $X \subseteq \mathbb P^n$ has defect if $h^i(X) \neq h^i(\mathbb P^n)$ for some $i \in \{n, \dots, 2n-2\}$ in a suitable cohomology theory. This occurs for example when $X \subseteq \mathbb P^4$ is not $\mathbb Q$-factorial. We show that in characteristic 0, the Tjurina number of hypersurfaces with defect is large. For $X$ with mild singularities, there is a similar result in positive characteristic. As an application, we obtain a lower bound on the asymptotic density of hypersurfaces without defect over a finite field.
Let F(X_d) be a smooth Fano variety of lines of a hypersurface X_d of degree d. In this paper, we prove the Griffiths group Griff_1(F(X_d)) is trivial if the hypersurface X_d is of 2-Fano type. As a result, we give a positive answer to a question of Professor Voisin about the first Griffiths groups of Fano varieties in some cases. Base on this result, we prove that CH_2(X_d)=\mathbb{Z} for a complex smooth $3$-Fano hypersurface X_d whose Fano variety of lines is smooth.
Given a nonconstant polynomial map over the reals having an isolated critical point in the origin and with zero locus of positive dimension, we establish a formula for the singular homology groups of a Milnor fibre relative to its boundary.
We adapt for algebraically closed fields $k$ of characteristic greater than $2$ two results of Voisin, on the decomposition of the diagonal of a smooth cubic hypersurface $X$ of dimension $3$ over $\mathbb C$, namely: the equivalence between Chow-theoretic and cohomological decompositions of the diagonal of those hypersurfaces and the fact that the algebraicity (with $\mathbb Z_2$-coefficients) of the minimal class $θ^4/4!$ of the intermediate jacobian $J(X)$ of $X$ implies the Chow-theoretic decomposition of the diagonal of $X$. Using the second result, the Tate conjecture for divisors on sur…
The well-known Mather-Yau theorem says that the isomorphism type of the local ring of an isolated complex hypersurface singularity is determined by its Tjurina algebra. It is also well known that this result is wrong as stated for power series f in K[[x]] over fields K of positive characteristic. In this note we show that, however, also in positive characteristic the isomorphism type of an isolated hypersurface singularity f is determined by an Artinian algebra, namely by a "higher Tjurina algebra" for sufficiently high index, for which we give an effective bound. We prove also a similar versi…
We study singularities in tropical hypersurfaces defined by a valuation over a field of positive characteristic. We provide a method to compute the set of singular points of a tropical hypersurface in positive characteristic and the p-adic case. This computation is applied to determine all maximal cones of the tropical linear space of univariate polynomials of degree $n$ and characteristic $p$ with a fixed double root and the fan of all tropical polynomials that have $0$ as a double root independently of the characteristic. We also compute, by pure tropical means, the number of vertices, edges…
