We generalize the motivic incarnation morphism from the theory of arithmetic integration to the relative case, where we work over a base variety S over a field k of characteristic zero. We develop a theory of constructible effective Chow motives over S, and we show how to associate a motive to any S-variety.
We give a geometric proof of relative quantifier elimination for pseudo-finite fields, and we construct a morphism from the Grothendieck ring of the theory of pseudo-finite fields over S, to the tensor product of Q with the Grothendieck ring of constructible effective Chow motives. This morphism yields a motivic realization for the parametrized arithmetic motivic integrals of Cluckers-Loeser.
Finally, we define relative arc and jet spaces, and the three relative motivic generating series.
Let X be an n-dimensional smooth proper variety over a field admitting resolution of singularities, and Y,Z two disjoint closed subsets of X. We establish an isomorphism M(X-Z,Y) isomorphic to M(X-Y,Z)^*(n)[2n] in Voevodsky's triangulated category of geometric motives. Here, M(X-Z,Y) is the motive of X -Z relative to its closed subset Y.
Let $G$ be a semi-simple algebraic group over a perfect field $k$. A lot of progress has been made recently in computing the Chow motives of projective $G$-homogenous varieties. When $k$ has positive characteristic, a broader class of $G$-homogeneous varieties appear. These are varieties over which $G$ acts transitively with possibly non-reduced isotropy subgroup. In this paper we study these varieties which we call ${\it \mbox{projective pseudo-homogeneous varieties}}$ for $G$ inner type over $k$ and prove that their motives satisfy Rost nilpotence. We also find their motivic decompositions a…
The purpose of this paper is to prove two statements which are key in the construction of mnotivic fibrant replacement for suspension spectrum conserned with motivic spece $\dfrac{X}{X-Z}$, where $X$ is smooth variety and $Z$ is its smooth subvariety.
We explain the role of the boundary motive in the construction of certain Chow motives, and of extensions of Chow motives. Our two main examples concern proper, singular surfaces and fibre products of a universal elliptic curve.
We introduce the categories of geometric mixed Hodge modules on algebraic varieties over a subfield $k\subset\mathbb C$, and for a prime number $p$, the categories of geometric $p$-adic mixed Hodge modules on algebraic varieties over a subfield $k\subset K\subset\mathbb C_p$ of a p-adic field $K$. We then give an Hodge realization functor on the de derived category of relative motives over $k\subset\mathbb C$, and for a prime number $p$ a $p$-adic Hodge realization functor on the derived category of relative motives over $k\subset K\subset\mathbb C_p$.
We introduce the notion of Artin motives and cohomological motives over a scheme X. Given a cohomological motive M over X, we construct its punctual weight zero part $ω^0_X(M)$ as the universal Artin motive mapping to M. We use this to define a motive E_X over X which is an invariant of the singularities of X. The first half of the paper is devoted to the study of the functors $ω^0_X$ and the computation of the motives E_X. In the second half of the paper, we develop the application to locally symmetric varieties. Specifically, let Y be a locally symmetric variety and denote by p:W-->Z the pro…
In the present article we investigate properties of the category of the integral Grothendieck-Chow motives over a field. We discuss the Krull-Schmidt principle for integral motives, provide a complete list of the generalized Severi-Brauer varieties with indecomposable integral motive, and exploit a relation between the category of motives of twisted flag varieties and integral $p$-adic representations of finite groups.
We prove a canonical Kuenneth decomposition of the relative motive with rational coefficients of a smooth commutative group scheme over a noetherian finite dimensional base. This paper is a follow-up of "On the motive of a commutative algebraic group" arXiv:1312.4171
We classify rigid local systems of rank 7 whose monodromy group is dense in the simple algebraic group of type G2. This leads to motives with Galois group G2.
Denef and Loeser defined a map from the Grothendieck ring of sets definable in pseudo-finite fields to the Grothendieck ring of Chow motives, thus enabling to apply any cohomological invariant to these sets. We generalize this to perfect, pseudo algebraically closed fields with pro-cyclic Galois group. In addition, we define some maps between different Grothendieck rings of definable sets which provide additional information, not contained in the associated motive. In particular we infer that the map of Denef-Loeser is not injective.
We give, for a complex algebraic variety $S$, a Hodge realization functor $\mathcal F_S^{Hdg}$ from the derived category of constructible motives $DA_c(S)$ to the derived category $D(MHM(S))$ of algebraic mixed Hodge modules over $S$. Moreover, for $f:T\to S$ a morphism of complex quasi-projective algebraic varieties, $\mathcal F_{-}^{Hdg}$ commutes with the four operation $f^*$,$f_*$,$f_!$,$f^!$ on $DA_c(-)$ and $D(MHM(-))$, making the Hodge realization functor a morphism of 2-functor wich for a given $S$ sends $DA_c(S)$ to $D(MHM(S)$, moreover $\mathcal F_S^{Hdg}$ commutes with tensor produc…
We construct and study a candidate for the standard motivic t-structure on the triangulated category of relative cohomological 1-motives with rational coefficients over a noetherian finite dimensional scheme S. This t-structure is defined as a generated t-structure, and we show it is non-degenerate. We relate its heart MM^1(S) with Deligne 1-motives over S; in particular, when S is regular, the category of Deligne 1-motives embeds in MM^1(S) fully faithfully. We also study the inclusion of DA^1(S) into the larger category DA^{coh}(S) of relative cohomological motives on S, and prove that its r…
We formulate a notion of "punctual gluing" of $t$-structures and weight structures. As our main application we show that the relative version of Ayoub's $1$-motivic $t$-structure restricts to compact motives. We also demonstrate the utility of punctual gluing by recovering several constructions in literature. In particular we construct the weight structure on the category of motivic sheaves over any base $X$ and we also construct the relative Artin motive and the relative Picard motive of any variety $Y/X$.
Bloch and Kriz construct an abelian category of mixed Tate motives as the category of comodules over a Hopf algebra obtained by the bar construction of the DGA of cycle complexes. In this paper we generalize their construction to give the definition of a category of mixed elliptic motives, i.e. a Tannakian category of mixed motives generated by an elliptic curve. We introduce the notion of a relative DGA over a reductive group. Then the category of mixed elliptic motives is defined as the category of comodules over the relative bar construction of a certain DGA $A_{EM}$ which is constructed fr…
We introduce and study various categories of (equivariant) motives of (versal) flag varieties. We relate these categories with certain categories of parabolic (Demazure) modules. We show that the motivic decomposition type of a versal flag variety depends on the direct sum decomposition type of the parabolic module. To do this we use localization techniques of Kostant-Kumar in the context of generalized oriented cohomology as well as the Rost nilpotence principle for algebraic cobordism and its generic version. As an application, we obtain new proofs and examples of indecomposable Chow motives…
The main goal of this paper is to define the so-called Chow weight structure for the category of Beilinson motives over any 'reasonable' base scheme $S$ (this is the version of Voevodsky's motives over $S$ defined by Cisinski and Deglise). We also study the functoriality properties of the Chow weight structure (they are very similar to the well-known functoriality of weights for mixed complexes of sheaves). As shown in a preceding paper, the Chow weight structure automatically yields an exact conservative weight complex functor (with values in $K^b(Chow(S))$). Here $Chow(S)$ is the heart of th…
The goal of this paper is to define a certain Chow weight structure for the category of Voevodsky's motivic complexes with integral coefficients (as described by Cisinski and Deglise) over any excellent finite-dimensional separated scheme $S$. Our results are parallel to (though substantially weaker than) the corresponding 'rational coefficient' statements proved by D. Hebert and the author. As an immediate consequence of the existence of 'weights', we obtain certain (Chow)-weight spectral sequences and filtrations for any (co)homology of $S$-motives.
Let $X$ be a smooth variety, $E$ a locally free sheaf on $X$. We express the generating function of the motives $[\textrm{Quot}_X(E,n)]$ in terms of the power structure on the Grothendieck ring of varieties. This extends a recent result of Bagnarol, Fantechi and Perroni for curves, and a result of Gusein-Zade, Luengo and Melle-Hernández for Hilbert schemes. We compute this generating function for curves and we express the relative motive $[\textrm{Quot}_{\mathbb A^d}(\mathscr{O}^{\oplus r}) \to \textrm{Sym}\, \mathbb A^d]$ as a plethystic exponential.
We prove several Künneth formulas in motivic homotopy categories and deduce a Verdier pairing in these categories following SGA5, which leads to the characteristic class of a constructible motive, an invariant closely related to the Euler-Poincaré characteristic. We prove an additivity property of the Verdier pairing using the language of derivators, following the approach of May and Groth-Ponto-Shulman; using such a result we show that in the presence of a Chow weight structure, the characteristic class for all constructible motives is uniquely characterized by proper covariance, additivity a…
In a previous work, the author have built two families of distinguished algebraic cycles in Bloch-Kriz cubical cycle complex over the projective line minus three points. The goal of this paper is to show how these cycles induce well-defined elements in the $\HH^0$ of the bar construction of the cycle complex and thus generated comodules over this $\HH^0$, that is a mixed Tate motives as in Bloch and Kriz construction. In addition, it is shown that out of the two families only ones is needed at the bar construction level. As a consequence, the author obtains that one of the family gives a basis…
We study certain triangulated categories of $K$-motives $DK(-)$ over a wide class of base schemes, and define certain "weights" for them. We relate the weights of particular $K$-motives to (negative) homotopy invariant $K$-groups (tensored by $\mathbb{Z}[S^{-1}]$ for $S$ being the set of "non-invertible primes") $\mathcal{K}_*(-)$. Our results yield a (new) result on the vanishing of $\mathcal{K}_i(-)$ and of relative $\mathcal{K}$-groups for $i$ being "too negative"; this statement is closely related to a question of Ch. Weibel. We also prove that $\mathcal{K}_i(-)$ for $i<0$ is "supported in…
We study genus 2 Hilbert-Siegel varieties, i.e. Shimura varieties $S_K$ corresponding to the group $\mbox{GSp}_{4,F}$ over a totally real field $F$, along with the relative Chow motives $^λ\mathcal{V}$ of abelian type over $S_K$ obtained from irreducible representations $V_λ$ of $\mbox{GSp}_{4,F}$. We analyse the weight filtration on the degeneration of such motives at the boundary of the Baily-Borel compactification and we find a criterion on the highest weight $λ$ which characterises the absence of the middle weights 0 and 1 in the corresponding degeneration. Thanks to Wildeshaus' theory, th…
A bi-arrangement of hyperplanes in a complex affine space is the data of two sets of hyperplanes along with a coloring information on the strata. To such a bi-arrangement, one naturally associates a relative cohomology group, that we call its motive. The motivation for studying such relative cohomology groups comes from the notion of motivic period. More generally, we suggest the systematic study of the motive of a bi-arrangement of hypersurfaces in a complex manifold. We provide combinatorial and cohomological tools to compute the structure of these motives. Our main object is the Orlik-Solom…
The category of framed correspondences $Fr_*(k)$ and framed sheaves were invented by Voevodsky in his unpublished notes [V2]. Based on the theory, framed motives are introduced and studied in [GP1]. These are Nisnivich sheaves of $S^1$-spectra and the major computational tool of [GP1]. The aim of this paper is to show the following result which is essential in proving the main theorem of [GP1]: given an infinite perfect base field $k$, any $k$-smooth scheme $X$ and any $n\geq 1$, the map of simplicial pointed Nisnevich sheaves $(-,\mathbb{A}^1//\mathbb G_m)^{\wedge n}_+\to T^n$ induces a Nisne…
The theory of framed motives by Garkusha and Panin gives computations in the stable motivic homotopy category $\mathbf{SH}(k)$ in terms of Voevodsky's framed correspondences. In particular the motivically fibrant $Ω$-resolution in positive degrees of the motivic suspension spectrum $Σ_{\mathbb P^1}^\infty X_+$, where $X_+=X\amalg *$, for a smooth scheme $X\in \mathrm{Sm}_k$ over an infinite perfect field $k$, is computed. The computation by Garkusha, Neshitov and Panin of the framed motives of relative motivic spheres $(\mathbb A^l\times X,(\mathbb A^l-0)\times X)$, $X\in \mathrm{Sm}_k$, is on…
Let X --> S be a smooth projective family of surfaces over a smooth curve S such that the generic fiber is a surface with Weil H^2 spanned by divisors and trivial H^1. We prove that if the relative motive of X/S is finite-dimensional the Chow group CH^2(X) with coefficients in Q is generated by a multisection and vertical cycles, i.e. one-dimensional cycles lying in closed fibers of the map X --> S. If S is the projective line P^1 then CH^2(X) is a direct sum of n+1 copies of Q where n<=b_2 and b_2 is the second Betti number of the generic fiber. Vertical generators in CH^2(X) can be concretel…
Grothendieck first defined the notion of a "motif" as a way of finding a universal cohomology theory for algebraic varieties. Although this program has not been realized, Voevodsky has constructed a triangulated category of geometric motives over a perfect field, which has many of the properties expected of the derived category of the conjectural abelian category of motives. The construction of the triangulated category of motives has been extended by Cisinski-Déglise to a triangulated category of motives over a base-scheme $S$. Recently, Bondarko constructed a DG category of motives, whose ho…
Let X be an abelian scheme over a base variety S with endomorphism algebra D. We prove that the relative Chow motive R(X/S) has a canonical decomposition as a direct sum of motives R^(ξ)$ where ξruns over an explicitly determined finite set of irreducible representations of the group D^{opp,*}, such that R^(ξ), seen as a functor from Chow motives to D^{\opp,*}-representations, is ξ-isotypic. Our decomposition refines the motivic decomposition of Deninger and Murre, as well as Beauville's decomposition of the Chow group. The second main result is that we construct a canonical generalized motivi…
An abelian category of relative pure motives is constructed along the lines of André (over a field of characteristic 0). An algebraic stack is shown to possess a motive in this sense. This motive is studied for the moduli stack of G-bundles over the universal curve for appropriate G, and a motivic Atiyah-Bott formula is obtained. By taking Hodge realization, a description of the corresponding variations of Hodge structures over M_g is given. In particular, it follows that these lie in the tensor category generated by the variation of Hodge structure associated to the curve itself. Similar resu…
As a generalization of Drinfeld modules, Greg Anderson introduced abelian t-modules and t-motives over a perfect field. In this article we study relative versions of these over rings. We investigate isogenies among them. Our main results state that every isogeny possesses a dual isogeny in the opposite direction, and that a morphism between abelian t-modules is an isogeny if and only if the corresponding morphism between their associated t-motives is an isogeny. We also study torsion submodules of abelian t-modules which in general are non-reduced group schemes. They can be obtained from the a…
For an oriented cohomology theory A and a relative cellular space X, we decompose the A-motive of X into a direct sum of twisted motives of the base spaces. We also obtain respective decompositions of the A-cohomology of X. Applying them, one can compute A(X), where X is an isotropic projective homogeneous variety and A means algebraic K-theory, motivic cohomology or algebraic cobordism MGL.
In this dissertation, we discuss mainly the corresponding geometric and representation theoretic aspects of relative $p$-adic Hodge theory and $p$-adic motives. To be more precise, we study the corresponding analytic geometry of the corresponding spaces over and attached to period rings in the relative $p$-adic Hodge theory, including derived topological de Rham complexes and derived topological logarithmic de Rham complexes after Bhatt, Gabber, Guo and Illusie which is in some sense equivalent to the derived prismatic cohomology of Bhatt-Scholze as shown in the work of Li-Liu, $\mathcal{O}\ma…
Let $k$ be a totally real number field. For every odd $n\geq 3$, we construct a Dedekind zeta motive in the category $\MT(k)$ of mixed Tate motives over $k$. By directly calculating its Hodge realisation, we prove that its period is a rational multiple of $π^{n[k:\Q]}ζ^*_k(1-n)$, where $ζ^*_k(1-n)$ denotes the special value of the Dedekind zeta function of $k$. We deduce that the group $\Ext^1_{\MT(k)} (\Q(0),\Q(n))$ is generated by the cohomology of a quadric relative to hyperplanes. This proves a surjectivity result for certain motivic complexes for $k$ that have been conjectured to calculat…
Suppose that X is a nonsingular variety and D is a nonsingular proper subvariety. Configuration spaces of distinct and non-distinct n points in X away from D were constructed by the author and B. Kim in arXiv:0806.3819, by using the method of wonderful compactification. In this paper, we give an explicit presentation of Chow motives and Chow rings of these configuration spaces.
We develop a power structure over the Grothendieck ring of varieties relative to an abelian monoid, which allows us to compute the motivic class of the generalized Kummer scheme. We obtain a generalized version of Cheah's formula for the Hilbert scheme of points, which specializes to Gulbrandsen's conjecture for Euler characteristics. Moreover, in the surface case we prove a conjecture of Göttsche for geometrically ruled surfaces, and we obtain an explicit formula for the virtual motive of the generalized Kummer scheme in dimension three.
We study the category $DM(S)$ of Beilinson motives (as described by Cisinski and Deglise) over a more or less general base scheme $S$, and establish several nice properties for a version $t_{hom}(S)$ of the perverse homotopy $t$-structure (essentially defined by Ayoub) for it. $t_{hom}(S)$ is characterized in terms of certain stalks of an $S$-motif $H$ and its Tate twists at fields over $S$; it is closely related to certain coniveau spectral sequences for the cohomology of (the Borel-Moore motives of) arbitrary finite type $S$-schemes. We conjecture that the heart of $t_{hom}(S)$ is given by c…
Let X be a projective variety, possibly singular. A generalized Albanese variety of X was constructed by Esnault, Srinivas and Viehweg over algebraically closed base field as a universal regular quotient of the relative Chow group of 0-cycles by Levine-Weibel. In this paper, we obtain a functorial description of the Albanese of Esnault-Srinivas-Viehweg over a perfect base field, using duality theory of 1-motives with unipotent part.
Let X be the quotient of a smooth projective variety over a field by a finite group action (in which case we say X is pseudo-smooth), such that the singularities of X are isolated k-rational points. Let Y be obtained by blowing up these points on X. Assume further that Y is pseudo-smooth, and that the components of the exceptional divisor are projective spaces. Then, without invoking the theory of finite-dimensional motives or assuming any of the standard conjectures, we show that a Chow-Kunneth decomposition on either X or Y gives rise, by means of an explicit construction, to a Chow-Kunneth …
We explain how to construct a cohomology theory on the category of separated quasi-compact smooth rigid spaces over $\mathbf{C}_p$ (or more general base fields), taking values in the category of vector bundles on the Fargues-Fontaine curve, which extends (in a suitable sense) Hyodo-Kato cohomology when the rigid space has a semi-stable proper formal model over the ring of integers of a finite extension of $\mathbf{Q}_p$. This cohomology theory factors through the category of rigid analytic motives of Ayoub.
We propose a construction of a tensor exact category F_X^m of Artin-Tate motivic sheaves with finite coefficients Z/m over an algebraic variety X (over a field K of characteristic prime to m) in terms of etale sheaves of Z/m-modules over X. Among the objects of F_X^m, in addition to the Tate motives Z/m(j), there are the cohomological relative motives with compact support M_cc^m(Y/X) of varieties Y quasi-finite over X. Exact functors of inverse image with respect to morphisms of algebraic varieties and direct image with compact supports with respect to quasi-finite morphisms of varieties Y\to …
We initiate a study of path spaces in the nascent context of "motivic dga's", under development in doctoral work by Gabriella Guzman. This enables us to reconstruct the unipotent fundamental group of a pointed scheme from the associated augmented motivic dga, and provides us with a factorization of Kim's relative unipotent section conjecture into several smaller conjectures with a homotopical flavor. Based on a conversation with Joseph Ayoub, we prove that the path spaces of the punctured projective line over a number field are concentrated in degree zero with respect to Levine's t-structure f…
In this paper we prove that the intersections of the levels of the dimension filtration on Voevodsky's motivic complexes over a field $k$ with the levels of the slice one are "as small as possible", i.e., that $Obj d_{\le m}DM^{eff}_{-,R} \cap Obj DM^{eff}_{-,R} (i)=Obj d_{\le m-i} DM^{eff}_{-,R} (i)$ (for $m,i\ge 0$ and $R$ being any coefficient ring in which the exponential characteristic of $k$ invertible). This statement is applied to prove that a conjecture of J. Ayoub is equivalent to a certain orthogonality assumption. We also establish a vast generalization of our intersection result t…
Let $π: X \to Y$ be a morphism of projective varieties and suppose that $α$ is a pseudo-effective numerical cycle class satisfying $π_*α= 0$. A conjecture of Debarre, Jiang, and Voisin predicts that $α$ is a limit of classes of effective cycles contracted by $π$. We establish new cases of the conjecture for higher codimension cycles. In particular we prove a strong version when $X$ is a fourfold and $π$ has relative dimension one.
Let A be an abelian variety and let us fix a Weil cohomology with coefficients in F. Let $H^1(A,F)$ be the first cohomology group of A and $Lef(A) \subset GL(H^1(A,F))$ be its Lefschetz group, i.e. the sub-group of $GL(H^1(A,F))$ of linear applications commuting with endomorphisms of A and respecting the pairing induced by a polarization. We give an explicit presentation of a $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra of correspondences $B_{i,r}$ such that the cycle class map induces an isomorphism $cl_{|_{B_{i,r}}}: B_{i,r} \otimes_{\mathbb{Q}} F \cong End_{Lef(A)}(H^i(A^r,F)).$ We also give relative versions of t…
In this paper, we initiate a study of motivic homotopy theory at infinity. We use the six functor formalism to give an intrinsic definition of the stable motivic homotopy type at infinity of an algebraic variety. Our main computational tools include cdh-descent for normal crossing divisors, Euler classes, Gysin maps, and homotopy purity. Under $\ell$-adic realization, the motive at infinity recovers a formula for vanishing cycles due to Rapoport-Zink; similar results hold for Steenbrink's limiting Hodge structures and Wildeshaus' boundary motives. Under the topological Betti realization, the s…
