In this note we establish a new Fujita-type effective bound for the base point freeness of adjoint line bundles on a compact complex projective manifold of complex dimension $n$. The bound we obtain (approximately) differs from the linear bound conjectured by Fujita only by a factor of the cube root of $n$. As an application, a new effective statement for pluricanonical embeddings is derived.
We define and calculate the weighted multiplicities of non Gorenstein terminal singularities on threefolds and some quotient singularities. We improve freeness conditions on threefolds.
We obtain effective results for the global generation of pluritheta line bundles on moduli spaces of vector bundles on curves. The main ingredient is an independent result giving an upper bound on the dimension of the Hilbert scheme of coherent quotients of a given vector bundle.
We generalize the result of Kawamata concerning the strong version of Fujita's freeness conjecture for smooth 3-folds to some singular cases, namely, Gorenstein terminal singularities and quotient singularities of type 1/r(1,1,1) and of type 1/r(1,1,-1). We generalize furthermore the result of that to projective threefolds with only canonical singularities for canonical and not terminal singularities. It turns out that the estimates in the first three cases are better than the one for the smooth case, which it is not in the fourth case. We also give explicit examples which show the estimate in…
We give effective bounds on the generation of pushforwards of log-pluricanonical bundles twisted by ample line bundles. This gives a partial answer to a conjecture proposed by Popa and Schnell. We prove two types of statements: first, more in the spirit of the general conjecture, we show generic global generation with predicted bound when the dimesnion of the variety if less than 4 and more generally, with a quadratic Angehrn-Siu type bound. Secondly, assuming that the relative canonical bundle is relatively semi-ample, we make a very precise statement. In particular, when the morphism is smoo…
A necessary and sufficient condition is given for semi-ampleness of a numerically effective (nef) and big line bundle in positive characteristic. One application is to the geometry of the universal stable curve over M_g, specifically, the semi-ampleness of the relative dualizing sheaf, in positive characteristic. An example is given which shows this and the semi-ampleness criterion fail in characteristic zero. A second application is to Mori's program for minimal models of 3-folds in positive characteristic, namely, to the existence of birational extremal contractions.
We extend Reider's freeness criterion to normal surfaces of characteristic 0. Let Y be a normal surface. Let D be a nef divisor on Y such that K_Y+D is a Cartier divisor. Let x be a point on Y. If x is a base point of |K_Y+D| and D^2>δ_x (δ_x is determined by x, δ_x <= 4) then there exists a non zero effective divisor E on Y passing through x such that 0 <= DE <= δ_x /2, DE - δ_x /4 <= E^2 <= (DE)^2 / D^2, E^2 < 0 if DE=0.
We give the new effective criterion for the global generation of the adjoint bundle on normal surfaces with a boundary. We could make the invariant δsmall a bit more on log-terminal singular point, and then we could prove the theorem described in my previous paper "alg-geom/9612018" as a corollary.
This treats the base-point-freeness of the adjoint bundles on normal surfaces with a boundary. This is an extension of the non-relative version of the theorem of Ein-Lazarsfeld-Masek and the theorem of Kawachi-Masek.
Let $\mathcal{E}$ be an ample vector bundle of rank $r\geq 2$ on a smooth complex projective variety $X$ of dimension $n$. The aim of this paper is to describe the structure of pairs $(X,\mathcal{E})$ as above whose adjoint bundles $K_X+\det\mathcal{E}$ are not nef for $r=n-3$. Furthermore, we give some immediate consequences of this result in adjunction theory.
I give a necessary and sufficient condition for a nef and big line bundle in positive characteristic to be semi-ample, and then give two applications: I show that the relative dualizing sheaf of the universal curve is semi-ample, in positive characteristic, and give a simple example which shows that this, and the semi-ampleness criterion, fail in characteristic zero. My second application is to Mori's program for minimal models of 3-folds. I prove a version of the Basepoint Free Theorem (for big line bundles on 3-folds of positive characteristic) and a simple Cone Theorem, for 3-folds of posit…
In this paper, we give a numerical criterion of Reider-type for the $d$-very ampleness of the adjoint line bundles on quasi-elliptic surfaces, and meanwhile we give a new proof of the vanishing theorem on quasi-elliptic surfaces emailed from Langer and show that it is the optimal version.
Let $G$ be a complex linear algebraic group which is simple of adjoint type. Let $\overline G$ be the wonderful compactification of $G$. We prove that the tangent bundle of $\overline G$ is stable with respect to every polarization on $\overline G$.
In this note we show that given a lc pair $(X, Δ)$, a large enough multiple of the bundle $K_X+ Δ$ is effective provided that its Chern class contains an effective $\bQ$-divisor.
We discuss the local freeness and the numerical semipositivity of direct images of relative pluricanonical bundles for surjective morphisms between smooth projective varieties with connected fibers. We give a desirable semipositivity theorem under the assumption that the geometric generic fiber has a good minimal model.
Let X be a smooth complex projective variety of dimension 4 and let L be an ample line bundle on X. In this paper, we study a natural number m such that h^{0}(m(K_{X}+L))>0 for any polarized 4-folds (X,L) with κ(K_{X}+L)\geq 0.
In the present paper we are concerned with the possible values of Seshadri constants. While in general every positive rational number appears as the local Seshadri constant of some ample line bundle, we point out that for adjoint line bundles there are explicit lower bounds depending only on the dimension of the underlying variety. In the surface case, where the optimal lower bound is 1/2, we characterize all possible values in the range between 1/2 and 1 -- there are surprisingly few. As expected, one obtains even more restrictive results for the Seshadri constants of adjoints of very ample l…
This is the expanded notes of the lecture by the author in "Arrangements in Pyrenees", June 2012. We are discussing relations of freeness and splitting problems of vector bundles, several techniques proving freeness of hyperplane arrangements, K. Saito's theory of primitive derivations for Coxeter arrangements, their application to combinatorial problems and related conjectures.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety of dimension $5$ and $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$ such that $L^5>7^5$ and $L^d\cdot Z\geq 7^d$ for any subvariety $Z$ of dimension $1\leq d\leq 4$. We show that $\mathcal{O}_X(K_X+L)$ is globally generated.
We give a new proof of Kollár's conjecture on the pushforward of the dualizing sheaf twisted by a variation of Hodge structure. This conjecture was settled by M. Saito via mixed Hodge modules and has applications in the investigation of Albanese maps. Our technique is the $L^2$-method and we give a concrete construction and proofs of the conjecture. The $L^2$ point of view allows us to generalize Kollár's conjecture to the context of non-abelian Hodge theory.
In this paper, we investigate the problem of simultaneously generations of $r$-jets of $ω_X\otimes L^{\otimes m}$ when $L$ is ample and base point free. It turns out that in this case, the bound of $m$ is optimistic, i.e. $m\geq f(r)=n+r+1$, which is linear in $r$. Our results work over arbitrary characteristics. We also treat the same problem when $X$ is singular where $ω_X$ is replaced by the pushforward of canonical sheaves or the cohomology sheaves of dualizing complexes.
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety of dimension three and let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. In this paper, we provide a lower bound of the dimension of the global sections of $m(K_{X}+L)$ under the assumption that $κ(K_{X}+L)$ is non-negative. In particular, we get the following: (1) if $κ(K_{X}+L)$ is greater than or equal to zero and less than or equal to two, then $h^{0}(K_{X}+L)$ is positive. (2) If $κ(K_{X}+L)$ is equal to three, then $h^{0}(2(K_{X}+L))$ is greater than or equal to three. Moreover we get a classification of $(X,L)$ such that $κ(K_{X}+L)$ is equal to thre…
Generalizing the recent result of Berndtsson, we prove the Nakano semipositivity of the direct image of relative pluricanonical systems and the direct image of relative adjoint (singular) hermitian line bundle with semipositive curvature. This gives a new proof of Kawamata's theorem on the semipositivity of the direct image of relative pluricanonical systems.
We propose an approach to study logarithmic sheaves T(-log A) associated with a hyperplane arrangements A on the projective space, based on projective duality, direct image functors and vector bundles methods. We focus on freeness of line arrangements having a point with high multiplicity.
Let $R$ be a complete discrete valuation ring of equi-characteristic zero with fractional field $K$. Let $X$ be a connected, smooth projective variety of dimension $d$ over $K$, and let $L$ be an ample line bundle over $X$. We assume that there exist a regular strictly semistable model $\mathscr{X}$ of $X$ over $R$ and a relatively ample line bundle $\mathscr{L}$ over $\mathscr{X}$ with $\mathscr{L}|_{X} \cong L$. Let $S(\mathscr{X})$ be the skeleton associated to $\mathscr{X}$ in the Berkovich analytification $X^{\mathrm{an}}$ of $X$. In this article, we study when $S(\mathscr{X})$ is faithfu…
We prove that Seshadri constants of some ample divisors are bigger than 1 on smooth threefolds whose anticanonical bundle is nef or on Fano varieties of small coindice. The main tools are (some known cases of) the Kawamata's effective non-vanishing conjecture and the adjunction theory. We prove the non-vanishing conjecture in dimension 3 in the case of line bundles of "high" volume using Kawamata's subadjunction formula.
We prove an $L^2$ extension theorem of Ohsawa-Takegoshi type for extending holomorphic sections of line bundles from a subvariety which is given as a maximal log-canonical center of a pair and is of general codimension in a projective variety. Our method of proof indicates that such a setting is the most natural one in a sense, for general $L^2$ extension of line bundle sections.
We show that a nef and big line bundle whose adjoint bundle has non-zero global sections on a nonsingular toric weak Fano 3-fold is normally generated. As a consequence, we see that all ample line bundles on a nonsingular toric weak Fano 3-fold are normally generated. We also show that an ample line bundle whose adjoint bundle has non-zero global sections on a Gorensein toric Fano 3-fold is normally generated. In our proof we do not use full classifications of Fano polytopes.
Let B be a nef and big line bundle on a smooth complex threefold X with canonical bundle K. Let x be a point on X and suppose that BC\ge3 for any curve C passing x, B^2S\ge7 for any surface S containing x, and B^3\ge51. Then K+B is spanned at x. (Ein-Lazarsfeld proved the assertion assuming B^3\ge92.) Corollary: K+3L is spanned if L is an ample line bundle with L^3>1.
We study the Fujita-type conjecture proposed by Popa and Schnell. We obtain an effective bound on the global generation of direct images of pluri-adjoint line bundles on the regular locus. We also obtain an effective bound on the generic global generation for a Kawamata log canonical $\mathbb{Q}$-pair. We use analytic methods such as $L^2$ estimates, $L^2$ extensions and injective theorems of cohomology groups.
Let $(X, A)$ be a nonsingular polarized toric 3-fold. We show that if the adjoint bundle of $A$ has no glabal section, then all ample line bundles on $X$ are normally generated. Even if the adjoint bundle is effective, if it is not big, then it is shown the normal generation. In particular, we show that all ample line bundles on a nonsingular toric Fano 3-fold are normally generated.
Let X be a smooth projective threefold, and let A be an ample line bundle such that $K_X+A$ is nef. We show that if $K_X$ or $-K_X$ is pseudoeffective, the adjoint bundle $K_X+A$ has global sections. We also give a very short proof of the Beltrametti-Sommese conjecture in dimension three, recently proven by Fukuma: if A is an ample line bundle such that $K_X+2A$ is nef, the adjoint bundle $K_X+2A$ has global sections.
Let X be a smooth projective variety and let K be the canonical divisor of X. In this paper, we study embeddings of X given by adjoint line bundles of the form K+L, where L is an ample line bundle. When X is a regular surface (i.e. H^1(X, O_X) = 0), we obtain a numerical criterion for K+L to have property Np. When X is a regular variety of arbitrary dimension, under a mild condition, we give an explicit calculation for the regularity of the ideal sheaves of such embeddings.
We prove that the $L^2$ metric on the direct image of an adjoint positive line bundle by a locally trivial submersion between projective manifolds is Nakano positive, under the assumption that the typical fiber has zero first Betti number. As a consequence, we get that the symmetric powers of an ample vector bundle tensorized by its determinant are Nakano positive, in particular Griffiths positive. This in turn gives vanishing theorems and an analytic characterization of ample vector bundles.
Let $(X,L)$ be an $n$-dimensional polarized variety. Fujita's conjecture says that if $L^n>1$ then the adjoint bundle $K_X+nL$ is spanned and $K_X+(n+1)L$ is very ample. There are some examples such that $K_X+nL$ is not spanned or $K_X+(n+1)L$ is not very ample. These are $(¶^n,Ø(1))$, hypersurface $M$ of degree $6$ in weighted projective space $¶(3,2,1,1,\cdots ,1)$ with $Ø_M(1)$ and numerically Godeaux surface etc. Numerically Godeaux surface is the quotient space of a Fermat type hypersurface of degree $5$ in $¶^3$ by an action of order $5$. These examples are not so much. We construct new …
We consider principal bundles over homogeneous spaces G/P, where P is a parabolic subgroup of a semisimple and simply connected complex linear algebraic group G. We prove that a holomorphic principal H--bundle, where H is a complex reductive group, is homogeneous if the adjoint vector bundle ad(E) is homogeneous. We also show that E is homogeneous if its associated vector bundle for any finite dimensional faithful H--module is homogeneous.
We give a Miyaoka-type semistability criterion for principal Higgs G-bundles E on complex projective manifolds of any dimension, i.e., we prove that E is semistable and the second Chern class of its adjoint bundle vanishes if and only if certain line bundles, obtained from the characters of the parabolic subgroups of G, are numerically effective. We also give alternative characterizations in terms of a notion of numerical effectiveness of Higgs vector bundles we have recently introduced.
The purpose of this paper is to establish an effective non-vanishing theorem for the syzygies of an adjoint-type line bundle on a smooth variety, as the positivity of the embedding increases. Our purpose here is to show that for an adjoint type divisor $B = K_X+ bA$ with $b \geq n+1$, one can obtain an effective statement for arbitrary $X$ which specializes to the statement for Veronese syzygies in the paper "Asymptotic Syzygies of Algebraic Varieties" by Ein and Lazarsfeld. We also give an answer to Problem 7.9 in that paper in this setting.
Here we study and classify polarized threefolds whose Kodaira energies are less than -1/2. The Kodaira energy of a polarized manifold (M, L), a pair consisting of a smooth complex algebraic variety M and an ample line bundle L on it, is defined to be $-\Inf{t\in Q\vert κ(K+tL)\ge0}$, where K is the canonical bundle of M and $κ$ denotes the Iitaka dimension of a Q-bundle. The method is a variant of those in my paper; manuscripta math. 76(1992).
The paper contains theorems on extending sections of line bundles from divisors to the ambient space, inspired by various results of Siu, Kawamata, and especially Hacon-McKernan and Takayama. Applications are given to basepoint-freeness, to the invariance of analogues of plurigenera and of part of the boundary of the pseudo-effective cone in families, and to a simplified approach towards part of the results used for proving the existence of flips by Hacon-McKernan.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ with arbitrary characteristic. Suppose $L$ is an ample and globally generated line bundle. By Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity, we show that $K_X \otimes L^{\otimes \dim X} \otimes A$ is globally generated and $K_X \otimes L^{\otimes (\dim X+1)} \otimes A$ is very ample, provided the line bundle $A$ is nef but not numerically trivial. On complex projective varieties, by investigating Kawamata-Viehweg-Nadel type vanishing theorems for vector bundles, we also obtain the global generation for adjoint vector bund…
Let G be a simple and simply connected complex linear algebraic group. In this paper, we discuss the generalization of the parabolic construction of holomorphic principal G-bundles over a smooth elliptic curve to the case of a singular curve of arithmetic genus one and to a fibration of Weierstrass cubics over a base B. Except for G of type E_8, the method gives a family of weighted projective spaces associated to a sum of line bundles over B. Working with the universal family of Weierstrass curves over affine two-space and its natural C^*-action, we determine the line bundles that arise in th…
Many papers are devoted to study logarithmic sheaves associated to reduced divisors, in particular logarithmic bundles associated to plane curves since forty years in differential and algebraic topology or geometry. An interesting family of these curves are the so-called free ones for which the associated logarithmic sheaf is the direct sum of two line bundles. When the curve is a finite set of distinct lines (i.e. a line arrangement), Terao conjectured thirty years ago that its freeness depends only on its combinatorics. A lot of efforts were done to prove it but at this time it is only prove…
In this paper, we obtain parametrizations of the moduli space of principal bundles over a compact Riemann surface using spaces of Hecke modifications in several cases. We begin with a discussion of Hecke modifications for principal bundles and give constructions of "universal" Hecke modifications of a fixed bundle of fixed type. This is followed by an overview of the construction of the "wonderful," or De Concini--Procesi, compactification of a semi-simple algebraic group of adjoint type. The compactification plays an important role in the deformation theory used in constructing the parametriz…
We define and study a version of Seshadri constant for ample line bundles in positive characteristic. We prove that lower bounds for this constant imply the global generation or very ampleness of the corresponding adjoint line bundle. As a consequence, we deduce that the criterion for global generation and very ampleness of adjoint line bundles in terms of usual Seshadri constants holds also in positive characteristic.
