In this paper we present a new approach to Morse theory based on the de Rham-Federer theory of currents. The full classical theory is derived in a transparent way. The methods carry over uniformly to the equivariant and the holomorphic settings. Moreover, the methods are substantially stronger than the classical ones and have interesting applications to geometry. They lead, for example, to formulae relating characteristic forms and singularities of bundle maps.
We show that the Morse index of a closed minimal hypersurface in a four-dimensional Riemannian manifold cannot be bound in terms of the volume and the topological invariants of the hypersurface itself by presenting a method for constructing Riemannian metrics on S^4 that admit embedded minimal hyperspheres of uniformly bounded volume and arbitrarily large Morse index. The phenomena we exhibit are in striking contrast with the three-dimensional compactness results by Choi-Schoen.
We use the Yang-Mills gradient flow on the space of connections over a closed Riemann surface to construct a Morse-Bott chain complex. The chain groups are generated by Yang-Mills connections. The boundary operator is defined by counting the elements of appropriately defined moduli spaces of Yang-Mills gradient flow lines that converge asymptotically to Yang-Mills connections.
We use the heat flow on the loop space of a closed Riemannian manifold to construct an algebraic chain complex. The chain groups are generated by perturbed closed geodesics. The boundary operator is defined in the spirit of Floer theory by counting, modulo time shift, heat flow trajectories that converge asymptotically to nondegenerate closed geodesics of Morse index difference one.
We complete the theoretical framework required for the construction of a Morse homology theory for certain types of forced mean curvature flows. The main result of this paper describes the asymptotic behaviour of these flows as the forcing term tends to infinity in a certain manner. This result allows the Morse homology to be explicitely calculated, and will permit us to show in forthcoming work that, for a large family of smooth positive functions, $F$, defined over a $(d+1)$-dimensional flat torus, there exist at least $2^{d+1}$ distinct, locally strictly convex, Alexandrov-embedded hypersph…

Using a certain well-posed ODE problem introduced by Shilnikov in the sixties, G. Minervini proved in his PhD thesis [17], among other things, the Harvey-Lawson Diagonal Theorem but without the restrictive tameness condition for Morse flows. Here we combine the same techniques with the ideas of Latschev in order to construct local resolutions for the flow of the graph of a section of a fiber bundle. This is endowed with a vertical vector field which is horizontally constant and Morse-Smale in every fiber. The resolution allows the removal of the tameness hypothesis from the homotopy formula in…
In this paper, we study the discrete Morse flow for the Ricci flow on football, which is the 2-sphere with removed north and south poles and with the metric $g_0$ of constant scalar curvature, and and for Porous media equation on a bounded regular domain in the plane. We show that with a suitable assumption about $g(0)$ we have a weak approximated discrete Morse flow for the approximated Ricci flow and Porous media equation on any time intervals.
The works of Donaldson and Mark make the structure of the Seiberg-Witten invariant of 3-manifolds clear. It corresponds to certain torsion type invariants counting flow lines and closed orbits of a gradient flow of a circle-valued Morse map on a 3-manifold. We study these invariants using the Morse-Novikov theory and Heegaard splitting for sutured manifolds, and make detailed computations for knot complements.
We study the $L^2$ gradient flow of the Yang--Mills functional on the space of connection 1-forms on a principal $G$-bundle over the sphere $S^2$ from the perspective of Morse theory. The resulting Morse homology is compared to the heat flow homology of the space $ΩG$ of based loops in the compact Lie group $G$. An isomorphism between these two Morse homologies is obtained by coupling a perturbed version of the Yang--Mills gradient flow with the $L^2$ gradient flow of the classical action functional on loops. Our result gives a positive answer to a question due to Atiyah.
Examples of Morse functions with integrable gradient flows on some classical Riemannian manifolds are considered. In particular, we show that a generic height function on the symmetric embeddings of classical Lie groups and certain symmetric spaces is a perfect Morse function, i.e. has as many critical points as the homology requires, and the corresponding gradient flow can be described explicitly. This gives an explicit cell decomposition and geometric realization of the homology for such a manifold. As another application of the integrable Morse functions we give an elementary proof of Vassi…
Fix a $C^\infty$ principal $G$--bundle $E^0_G$ on a compact connected Riemann surface $X$, where $G$ is a connected complex reductive linear algebraic group. We consider the gradient flow of the Yang--Mills--Higgs functional on the cotangent bundle of the space of all smooth connections on $E^0_G$. We prove that this flow preserves the subset of Higgs $G$--bundles, and, furthermore, the flow emanating from any point of this subset has a limit. Given a Higgs $G$--bundle, we identify the limit point of the integral curve passing through it. These generalize the results of the second named author…
We introduce a Milnor metric on the determinant line of the cohomology of the underlying closed manifold with coefficients in a flat vector bundle, by means of interactions between the fixed points and the closed orbits of a Morse-Smale flow. This allows us to generalise the notion of the absolute value at zero point of the Ruelle dynamical zeta function, even in the case where this value is not well defined in the classical sense. We give a formula relating the Milnor metric and the Ray-Singer metric. An essential ingredient of our proof is Bismut-Zhang's Theorem.
In~\cite{rotvandervorst} a homology theory --Morse-Conley-Floer homology-- for isolated invariant sets of arbitrary flows on finite dimensional manifolds is developed. In this paper we investigate functoriality and duality of this homology theory. As a preliminary we investigate functoriality in Morse homology. Functoriality for Morse homology of closed manifolds is known~\cite{abbondandoloschwarz, aizenbudzapolski, audindamian, kronheimermrowka, schwarz}, but the proofs use isomorphisms to other homology theories. We give direct proofs by analyzing appropriate moduli spaces. The notions of iso…
We consider a Morse function $f$ and a Morse-Smale gradient-like vector field $X$ on a compact connected oriented 3-manifold $M$ such that $f$ has only one critical point of index 3. Based on Laudenbach's ideas, we will show that the flow of $X$ can be isotoped into one so that the trajectory spaces of the new flow provide a stratification for $M$. We will construct "natural" tubular neighborhoods about each given trajectory space of the new flow such that these neighborhoods are stratified by open subsets of trajectory spaces that co-bound the given one. In connection with this we introduce t…
In case of the heat flow on the free loop space of a closed Riemannian manifold non-triviality of Morse homology for semi-flows is established by constructing a natural isomorphism to singular homology of the loop space. The construction is also new in finite dimensions. The main idea is to build a Morse filtration using Conley pairs and their pre-images under the time-$T$-map of the heat flow. A crucial step is to contract each Conley pair onto its part in the unstable manifold. To achieve this we construct stable foliations for Conley pairs using the recently found backward $λ$-Lemma [31]. T…
The results of this paper concern the Morse theory of the norm-square of the moment map on the space of representations of a quiver. We show that the gradient flow of this function converges, and that the Morse stratification induced by the gradient flow co-incides with the Harder-Narasimhan stratification from algebraic geometry. Moreover, the limit of the gradient flow is isomorphic to the graded object of the Harder-Narasimhan-Jordan-Hölder filtration associated to the initial conditions for the flow. With a view towards applications to Nakajima quiver varieties we construct explicit local …
Let $ \mathfrak{M}$ be the moduli space of torsion free $ G_2$ structures on a compact 7-manifold $ M$, and let $ \mathfrak{M}_1 \subset \mathfrak{M}$ be the $ G_2$ structures with volume($M$) $=1$. The cohomology map $ π^3: \mathfrak{M} \to H^3(M, R)$ is known to be a local diffeomorphism. It is proved that every nonzero element of $ H^4(M, R) = H^3(M, R)^*$ is a Morse function on $ \mathfrak{M}_1 $ when composed with $ π^3$. When dim $H^3(M, R) = 2$, the result in particular implies $ π^3$ is one to one on each connected component of $ \mathfrak{M}$. Considering the first Pontryagin class $ …
With a view to constructing a Morse/Floer homology theory for CMC hypersurfaces, we prove a compactness result modulo broken trajectories for eternal mean curvature flows with forcing term in compact, hyperbolic manifolds.

The tame flows are ``nice'' flows on ``nice'' spaces. The nice (tame) sets are the pfaffian sets introduced by Khovanski, and a flow $Φ: \mathbb{R}\times X\to X$ on pfaffian set $X$ is tame if the graph of $Φ$ is a pfaffian subset of $\mathbb{R}\times X\times X$. Any compact tame set admits plenty tame flows. We prove that the flow determined by the gradient of a generic real analytic function with respect to a generic real analytic metric is tame. The typical tame gradient flow satisfies the Morse-Smale condition, and we prove that in the tame context the Morse-Smale condition is equivalent t…
We present a new approach to Morse and Novikov theories, based on the deRham Federer theory of currents, using the finite volume flow technique of Harvey and Lawson. In the Morse case, we construct a noncompact analogue of the Morse complex, relating a Morse function to the cohomology with compact forward supports of the manifold. This complex is then used in Novikov theory, to obtain a geometric realization of the Novikov Complex as a complex of currents and a new characterization of Novikov Homology as cohomology with compact forward supports. Two natural ``backward-forward'' dualities are a…
Let X be a compact oriented Riemannian manifold and let $ϕ:X\to S^1$ be a circle-valued Morse function. Under some mild assumptions on $ϕ$, we prove a formula relating: (a) the number of closed orbits of the gradient flow of $ϕ$ of any given degree; (b) the torsion of a ``Morse complex'', which counts gradient flow lines between critical points of $ϕ$; and (c) a kind of Reidemeister torsion of X determined by the homotopy class of $ϕ$. When $\dim(X)=3$ and $b_1(X)>0$, we state a conjecture analogous to Taubes's ``SW=Gromov'' theorem, and we use it to deduce (for closed manifolds, modulo signs)…

We consider the closed orbit structure of generic gradient flows of Morse closed 1-forms. The torsion of a chain homotopy equivalence between the Novikov complex and the completed simplicial chain complex of the universal cover detects the eta function of the flow. We extend this result to arbitrary Morse closed 1-forms. The case of rational forms was considered by A. Pajitnov.
In the present work we generalize the construction of monopole Floer homology due to Kronheimer and Mrowka to the case of a gradient flow with Morse-Bott singularities. Focusing then on the special case of a three-manifold equipped with a spin$^c$ structure isomorphic to its conjugate, we define the counterpart in this context of Manolescu's recent $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-equivariant Seiberg-Witten-Floer homology. In particular, we provide an alternative approach to his disproof of the celebrated Triangulation conjecture.
The problem of finding groups in data (cluster analysis) has been extensively studied by researchers from the fields of Statistics and Computer Science, among others. However, despite its popularity it is widely recognized that the investigation of some theoretical aspects of clustering has been relatively sparse. One of the main reasons for this lack of theoretical results is surely the fact that, unlike the situation with other statistical problems as regression or classification, for some of the cluster methodologies it is quite difficult to specify a population goal to which the data-based…
We give elementary constructions of manifold with corner structures and associative gluing maps on compactifications of spaces of infinite, half infinite, and finite Morse flow lines.
In this article, we first introduce the concepts of vector fields and their divergence, and we recall the concepts of the gradient, Laplacian operator, Cheeger constants, eigenvalues, and heat kernels on a locally finite graph $V$. We give a projective characteristic of the eigenvalues. We also give an extension of Barta Theorem. Then we introduce the mini-max value of a function on a locally finite and locally connected graph. We show that for a coercive function on on a locally finite and locally connected graph, there is a mini-max value of the function provided it has two strict local mini…
Let f be a Morse map from a closed manifold to a circle. S.P.Novikov constructed an analog of the Morse complex for f. The Novikov complex is a chain complex defined over the ring of Laurent power series with integral coefficients and finite negative part. This complex depends on the choice of a gradient-like vector field. The homotopy type of the Novikov complex is the same as the homotopy type of the completed complex of the simplicial chains of the cyclic covering associated to f. In the present paper we prove that for every C^0-generic f-gradient there is a homotopy equivalence between the…
We address some aspects of four dimensional chiral N=1 supersymmetric theories on which the scalar manifold is described by Kähler geometry and can further be viewed as Kähler-Ricci soliton generating a one-parameter family of Kähler geometries. All couplings and solutions, namely the BPS domain walls and their supersymmetric Lorentz invariant vacua turn out to be evolved with respect to the flow parameter related to the soliton. Two models are discussed, namely N=1 theory on Kähler-Einstein manifold and U(n) symmetric Kähler-Ricci soliton with positive definite metric. In the first case we fi…
