In this article, we first introduce the concepts of vector fields and their divergence, and we recall the concepts of the gradient, Laplacian operator, Cheeger constants, eigenvalues, and heat kernels on a locally finite graph $V$. We give a projective characteristic of the eigenvalues. We also give an extension of Barta Theorem. Then we introduce the mini-max value of a function on a locally finite and locally connected graph. We show that for a coercive function on on a locally finite and locally connected graph, there is a mini-max value of the function provided it has two strict local minima values. We consider the discrete Morse flow for the heat flow on a finite graph in the locally finite graph $V$. We show that under suitable assumptions on the graph one has a weak discrete Morse flow for the heat flow on $S$ on any time interval. We also study the heat flow with time-variable potential and its discrete Morse flow. We propose the concepts of harmonic maps from a graph to a Riemannian manifold and pose some open questions.
In this paper, we study two kind of L^2 norm preserved non-local heat flows on closed manifolds. We first study the global existence, stability and asymptotic behavior to such non-local heat flows. Next we give the gradient estimates of positive solutions to these heat flows.
We investigate the well-posedness of (i) the heat flow of harmonic maps from $R^n$ to a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary for initial data in BMO; and (ii) the hydrodynamic flow $(u,d)$ of nematic liquid crystals on $\mathbb R^n$ for initial data in $BMO^{-1}\times BMO$.
In this paper, we derive a Sobolev inequality along an extended Ricci flow and prove a point-wise Guassian type bound for the fundamental solutions of the conjugate heat equation under the flow.
We establish both local and global well-posedness for the heat flow of polyharmonic maps from $R^n$ to a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary for initial data with small BMO norms.
This paper establish the local (or global, resp.) well-posedness of the heat flow of biharmonic maps from $R^n$ to a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary with small local BMO (or BMO, resp.) norms.
We show an energy convexity along any harmonic map heat flow with small initial energy and fixed boundary data on the unit 2-disk. In particular, this gives an affirmative answer to a question raised by W. Minicozzi asking whether such harmonic map heat flow converges uniformly in time strongly in the W^{1,2}-topology, as time goes to infinity, to the unique limiting harmonic map.
We define and study the harmonic heat flow for almost complex structures which are compatible with a Riemannian structure $(M, g)$. This is a tensor-valued version of harmonic map heat flow. We prove that if the initial almost complex structure $J$ has small energy (depending on the norm $|\nabla J|$), then the flow exists for all time and converges to a Kähler structure. We also prove that there is a finite time singularity if the initial energy is sufficiently small but there is no Kähler structure in the homotopy class. A main technical tool is a version of monotonicity formula, similar as …
We establish effective existence and uniqueness for the heat flow on time-dependent Riemannian manifolds, under minimal assumptions tailored towards the study of Ricci flow through singularities. The main point is that our estimates only depend on an upper bound for the logarithmic derivative of the volume measure. In particular, our estimates hold for any Ricci flow with scalar curvature bounded below, and such a lower bound of course depends only on the initial data.
In this note we obtain local derivative estimates of Shi-type for the heat equation coupled to the Ricci flow. As applications, in part combining with Kuang's work, we extend some results of Zhang and Bamler-Zhang including distance distortion estimates and a backward pseudolocality theorem for Ricci flow on compact manifolds to the noncompact case.
We examine the question of uniqueness for the equivariant reduction of the harmonic map heat flow in the energy supercritical dimension. It is shown that, generically, singular data can give rise to two distinct solutions which are both stable, and satisfy the local energy inequality. We also discuss how uniqueness can be retrieved.
We introduce a heat flow associated to half-harmonic maps, which have been introduced by Da Lio and Rivière. Those maps exhibit integrability by compensation in one space dimension and are related to harmonic maps with free boundary. We consider a new flow associated to these harmonic maps with free boundary which is actually motivated by a rather unusual heat flow for half-harmonic maps. We construct then weak solutions and prove their partial regularity in space and time via a Ginzburg-Landau approximation. The present paper complements the study initiated by Struwe and Chen-Lin.
In this paper we study the harmonic map heat flow on the euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$ and we show an unconditional uniqueness result for maps with small initial data in the homogeneous Besov space $\dot{B}^{\frac{d}{p}}_{p,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ where $d<p<\infty$. As a consequence we obtain decay rates for solutions of the harmonic map flow of the form $\|\nabla u(t) \|_{L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^d)}\leq Ct^{-\frac12}$. Additionally, under the assumption of a stronger spatial localization of the initial conditions, we show that the temporal decay happens in a self-similar way. We also explain tha…
We develop the differential geometric and geometric analytic studies of Hamiltonian systems. Key ingredients are the curvature operator, the weighted Laplacian, and the associated Riccati equation. We prove the appropriate generalizations of Bochner--Weitzenböck formula and Laplacian comparison theorem, and study the heat flow.
We study the heat equation on time-dependent metric measure spaces (as well as the dual and the adjoint heat equation) and prove existence, uniqueness and regularity. Of particular interest are properties which characterize the underlying space as a super Ricci flow as previously introduced by the second author. Our main result yields the equivalence of (i) dynamic convexity of the Boltzmann entropy on the (time-dependent) $L^2$-Wasserstein space; (ii) monotonicity of $L^2$-Kantorovich-Wasserstein distances under the dual heat flow acting on probability measures (backward in time); (iii) gradi…
We prove a Davies type double integral estimate for the heat kernel $H(y,t;x,l)$ under the Ricci flow. As a result, we give an affirmative answer to a question proposed by Chow etc.. Moreover, we apply the Davies type estimate to provide a new proof of the Gaussian upper and lower bounds of $H(y,t;x,l)$ which were first shown by Chau-Tam-Yu.
In this paper we introduce and study a geometric heat flow to find Killing vector fields on closed Riemannian manifolds with positive sectional curvature. We study its various properties, prove the global existence of the solution of this flow, discuss its convergence and possible applications, and its relation to the Navier-Stokes equations on manifolds and Kazdan-Warner-Bourguignon-Ezin identity for conformal Killing vector fields. We also provide two new criterions on the existence of Killing vector fields. The similar flow to finding holomorphic vector fields on Kähler manifolds will be st…
The paper considers a manifold $M$ evolving under the Ricci flow and establishes a series of gradient estimates for positive solutions of the heat equation on $M$. Among other results, we prove Li-Yau-type inequalities in this context. We consider both the case where $M$ is a complete manifold without boundary and the case where $M$ is a compact manifold with boundary. Applications of our results include Harnack inequalities for the heat equation on $M$.
We introduce a sub-Riemannian analogue of the Bence-Merriman-Osher diffusion driven algorithm and show that it leads to weak solutions of the horizontal mean curvature flow of graphs over sub-Riemannian Carnot groups. The proof follows the nonlinear semi-group theory approach originally introduced by L. C. Evans in the Euclidean setting and is based on new results on the relation between sub-Riemannian heat flows of characteristic functions of subgraphs and the horizontal mean curvature of the corresponding graphs.
This paper first proposes a new approximate scheme to construct a harmonic heat flow $u$ between a parabolic cylinder to a sphere. Y.Chen and M.Struwe have proved an existence and discussed a partial regularity of harmonic heat flows by using Ginzburg-Landau heat flow and passing to the limit of a parameter appeared in the equation. To construct a new harmonic heat flow, we propose a Ginzburg-Landau type heat flow with a time-dependent parameter. and we next establish the existence of a harmonic heat flow into spheres with (i) a global energy inequality, (ii) a monotonicity for the scaled ener…
We prove that on compact Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded below the gradient flow of the Dirichlet energy in the $L^2$-space produces the same evolution as the gradient flow of the relative entropy in the $L^2$-Wasserstein space. This means that the heat flow is well defined by either one of the two gradient flows. Combining properties of these flows, we are able to deduce the Lipschitz continuity of the heat kernel as well as Bakry-Émery gradient estimates and the $Γ_2$-condition. Our identification is established by purely metric means, unlike preceding results relying on PDE techniq…
The purpose of this paper is to establish some basic interior estimates of Cauchy-Schauder type for the heat flow associated with a system of smooth vector fields satisfying Hormander's finite rank condition
We prove the existence of a unique global weak solution to the full bosonic string heat flow from closed Riemannian surfaces to an arbitrary target under smallness conditions on the two-form and the scalar potential. The solution is smooth with the exception of finitely many singular points. Finally, we discuss the convergence of the heat flow and obtain a new existence result for critical points of the full bosonic string action.
We follow the idea of Wang \cite{W} to show the existence of global weak solutions to the Cauchy problems of Landau-Lifshtiz type equations and related heat flows from a $n$-dimensional Euclidean domain $\Om$ or a $n$-dimensional closed Riemannian manifold $M$ into a 2-dimensional unit sphere $\U^{2}$. Our conclusions extend a series of related results obtained in the previous literature.
We establish a blow-up criterion in terms of the upper bound of the density and temperature for the strong solution to 2D compressible viscous heat-conductive flows. The initial vacuum is allowed.
We study harmonic maps from surfaces coupled to a scalar and a two-form potential, which arise as critical points of the action of the full bosonic string. We investigate several analytic and geometric properties of these maps and prove an existence result by the heat flow method.
Based on the idea of a recent paper by Ambrosio-Gigli-Savaré in Invent. Math. (2013), we show that flow of the $q$-Cheeger energy, called $q$-heat flow, solves the gradient flow problem of the Renyi entropy functional in the $p$-Wasserstein. For that, a further study of the $q$-heat flow is presented including a condition for its mass preservation. Under a convexity assumption on the upper gradient, which holds for all $q\ge2$, one gets uniqueness of the gradient flow and the two flows can be identified. Smooth solution of the $q$-heat flow are solution the parabolic q-Laplace equation, i.e. $…
We study contractivity properties of gradient flows for functions on normed spaces or, more generally, on Finsler manifolds. Contractivity of the flows turns out to be equivalent to a new notion of convexity for the functions. This is different from the usual convexity along geodesics in non-Riemannian Finsler manifolds. As an application, we show that the heat flow on Minkowski normed spaces other than inner product spaces is not contractive with respect to the quadratic Wasserstein distance.
We study an initial-boundary-value problem for time-dependent flows of heat-conducting viscous incompressible fluids in channel-like domains on a time interval $(0,T)$. For the parabolic system with strong nonlinearities and including the artificial (the so called "do nothing") boundary conditions, we prove the local in time existence, global uniqueness and smoothness of the solution on a time interval $(0,T^*)$, where $0< T^* \leq T$.
We show that log-concavity is the weakest power concavity preserved by the Dirichlet heat flow in $N$-dimensional convex domains, where $N\ge 2$ (indeed, we prove that starting with a negative power concave initial datum may result in losing immediately any reminiscence of concavity). Jointly with what we already know, i.e. that log-concavity is the strongest power concavity preserved by the Dirichlet heat flow, we see that log-concavity is indeed the only power concavity preserved by the Dirichlet heat flow.
We consider the Ginzburg-Landau heat flow on the two-dimensional flat torus, starting from an initial data with a finite number of nondegenerate zeros -- but possibly very high initial energy. We show that the initial zeros are conserved and the flow rapidly enters a logarithmic energy regime, from which the evolution of vortices can be described by the works of Bethuel, Orlandi and Smets.
We introduce the transportation-annihilation distance $W_p^\sharp$ between subprobabilities and derive contraction estimates with respect to this distance for the heat flow with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on an open set in a metric measure space. We also deduce the Bochner inequality for the Dirichlet Laplacian as well as gradient estimates for the associated Dirichlet heat flow. For the Dirichlet heat flow, moreover, we establish a gradient flow interpretation within a suitable space of charged probabilities. In order to prove this, we will work with the \emph{doubling} of the …
We discuss the heat content asymptotics associated with the heat flow out of a smooth compact manifold in a larger compact Riemannian manifold. Although there are no boundary conditions, the corresponding heat content asymptotics involve terms localized on the boundary. The classical pseudo-differential calculus is used to establish the existence of the complete asymptotic series and methods of invariance theory are used to determine the first few terms in the asymptotic series in terms of geometric data. The operator driving the heat process is assumed to be an operator of Laplace type.
In my previous paper I have contrived a Ginzburg-Landau heat flow with a time-dependent parameter and by using it, I constructed a harmonic heat flow into spheres with a monotonical inequality and a reverse Poincaré inequality. This paper establishes these two energy inequalities near the boundary and then by making the best of them, we discuss a partial boundary regularity. In addition to it, we demonstrate a whole domain's regularity under "the one-sided condition." This has been proposed by S.Hildebrandt and K.-O.Widman.
In this article, we study the the harmonic map heat flow from a manifold with conic singularities to a closed manifold. In particular, we have proved the short time existence and uniqueness of solutions as well as the existence of global solutions into manifolds with nonpositive sectional curvature. These results are established in virtue of the maximal regularity theory on manifolds with conic singularities.
We analyze the possible concentration behavior of heat flows related to the Moser-Trudinger energy and derive quantization results completely analogous to the quantization results for solutions of the corresponding elliptic equation. As an application of our results we obtain the existence of critical points of the Moser-Trudinger energy in a supercritical regime.
We study the heat flow from an open, bounded set $D$ in $\R^2$ with a polygonal boundary $\partial D$. The initial condition is the indicator function of $D$. A Dirichlet $0$ boundary condition has been imposed on some but not all of the edges of $\partial D$. We calculate the heat content of $D$ in $\R^2$ at $t$ up to an exponentially small remainder as $t\downarrow 0$.
In this paper we study the Heat Flow on Metric Random Walk Spaces, which unifies into a broad framework the heat flow on locally finite weighted connected graphs, the heat flow determined by finite Markov chains and some nonlocal evolution problems. We give different characterizations of the ergodicity and prove that a metric random walk space with positive Ollivier-Ricci curvature is ergodic. Furthermore, we prove a Cheeger inequality and, as a consequence, we show that a Poincaré inequality holds if, and only if, an isoperimetric inequality holds. We also study the Bakry-Émery curvature-dime…
In this paper, the authors consider an initial boundary value problem for the heat flow of equation of surfaces with constant mean curvatures, which was investigated in [On the heat flow of equation of surfaces of constant mean curvatures, Manuscripta Mathematica, 2011, 134: 259-271] by Huang et al., where global well-posedness and finite time blow-up of regular solutions were obtained. Their results are complemented in this paper in the sense that some new conditions on the initial data are provided for the solutions to develop finite time singularity.
We investigate the heat flow in an open, bounded set $D$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with polygonal boundary $\partial D$. We suppose that $D$ contains an open, bounded set $\widetilde{D}$ with polygonal boundary $\partial \widetilde{D}$. The initial condition is the indicator function of $\widetilde{D}$ and we impose a Neumann boundary condition on the edges of $\partial D$. We obtain an asymptotic formula for the heat content of $\widetilde{D}$ in $D$ as time $t\downarrow 0$.
We consider a flow of heat conducting fluid inside a moving domain whose shape in time is prescribed. The flow in this case is governed by the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system consisting of equation of continuity, momentum balance, entropy balance and energy equality. The velocity is supposed to fulfill the full-slip boundary condition and we assume that the fluid is thermally isolated. In the presented article we show the existence of a variational solution.
We study the analog of the Yang-Mills heat flow on the moduli space of framed bundles on a cut surface. Existence and convergence of the heat flow give a stratification of Morse type invariant under the action of the loop group. We use the stratification to prove versions of Kahler quantization commutes with reduction and Kirwan surjectivity.
J.-M. Coron proved in [5] that the global weak solutions of the heat flow from $M$ to $N$, starting at non-stationary weakly harmonic maps, are not unique when $M = B^3$ and $N = S^2$. Hence, the semigroup property of the solution map does not hold in general. The present short paper uses the techniques developed by J. Cardona and L. Kapitanski to show the existence of infinitely many measurable semigroups solving the heat flow in the same cases where non-uniqueness was shown by J.-M. Coron.
We are concerned with an initial boundary value problem for the nonhomogeneous heat conducting Navier-Stokes flows with non-negative density. First of all, we show that for the initial density allowing vacuum, the strong solution exists globally if the velocity satisfies the Serrin's condition. Then, under some smallness condition, we prove that there is a unique global strong solution to the 3D viscous nonhomogeneous heat conducting Navier-Stokes flows. Our method relies upon the delicate energy estimates and regularity properties of Stokes system and elliptic equation.
We consider three one-dimensional continuous-time Markov processes on a lattice, each of which models the conduction of heat: the family of Brownian Energy Processes with parameter $m$, a Generalized Brownian Energy Process, and the Kipnis-Marchioro-Presutti process. The hydrodynamic limit of each of these three processes is a parabolic equation, the linear heat equation in the case of the BEP$(m)$ and the KMP, and a nonlinear heat equation for the GBEP($a$). We prove the hydrodynamic limit rigorously for the BEP$(m)$, and give a formal derivation for the GBEP($a$). We then formally derive the…
We consider the heat flow of Yang-Mills-Higgs functional where the base manifold is a Riemannian surface and the fiber is a compact symplectic manifold. We show that the corresponding Cauchy problem admits a global weak solution for any $H^1$-initial data. Moreover, the solution is smooth except finitely many singularities. We prove an energy identity at finite time singularities and give a description of the asymptotic behavior at time infinity.
We study an initial boundary value problem for the Navier-Stokes equations of compressible viscous heat-conductive fluids in a 2-D periodic domain or the unit square domain. We establish a blow-up criterion for the local strong solutions in terms of the gradient of the velocity only, which coincides with the famous Beale-Kato-Majda criterion for ideal incompressible flows.
