In this paper we introduce and study a geometric heat flow to find Killing vector fields on closed Riemannian manifolds with positive sectional curvature. We study its various properties, prove the global existence of the solution of this flow, discuss its convergence and possible applications, and its relation to the Navier-Stokes equations on manifolds and Kazdan-Warner-Bourguignon-Ezin identity for conformal Killing vector fields. We also provide two new criterions on the existence of Killing vector fields. The similar flow to finding holomorphic vector fields on Kähler manifolds will be studied in \cite{LL2}.
The problem of evaluating heat invariants can be computerized. Geometric symbol calculus of pseudodifferential operators is the main tool of such computerization.
In those lecture notes, we review some applications of heat semigroups methods in Riemannian and sub-Riemannian geometry. The notes contain parts of courses taught at Purdue University, Institut Henri Poincaré, Levico Summer School and Tata Institute.
We consider the heat equation associated to Schrödinger operators acting on vector bundles on asymptotically locally Euclidean (ALE) manifolds. Novel $L^p - L^q$ decay estimates are established, allowing the Schrödinger operator to have a non-trivial $L^2$-kernel. We also prove new decay estimates for spatial derivatives of arbitrary order, in a general geometric setting. Our main motivation is the application to stability of non-linear geometric equations, primarily Ricci flow, which will be presented in a companion paper. The arguments in this paper use that many geometric Schrödinger operat…
We consider Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs) as the boundaries of material subsets whose advective evolution is metastable under weak diffusion. For their detection, we first transform the Eulerian advection-diffusion equation to Lagrangian coordinates, in which it takes the form of a time-dependent diffusion or heat equation. By this coordinate transformation, the reversible effects of advection are separated from the irreversible joint effects of advection and diffusion. In this framework, LCSs express themselves as (boundaries of) metastable sets under the Lagrangian diffusion process.…
In this paper geometrical aspects of perfect fluid spacetime with torse-forming vector field ξare discribed and Ricci soliton in perfect fluid spacetime with torse-forming vector field ξare determined. Conditions for the Ricci soliton to be expanding, steady or shrinking are also given.
We study local control of the mechanism with the growth vector (4,7). We study controllability and extremal trajectories on the nilpotent approximation as an example of the control theory on Lie group. We give solutions of the system an show examples of local extremal trajectories.
A complete classification of isotropic vector equations of the geometric type that possess higher symmetries is proposed. New examples of integrable multi-component systems of the geometric type and their auto-Backlund transformations are found.
In this note we consider a heat trace expansion on a manifold with wedge-like singularity. We show that there are two terms in the expansion that contain information about the presence of the singularity, namely the logarithmic term $ct^{-1/2}\log t$ and the half power term $bt^{-1/2}$. We also give a geometric expression for $c$.
Our aim in this paper is to investigate some geometrical properties of Berger Spheres i.e. homogeneous Ricci solitons and harmonicity properties of invariant vector fields. We determine all vector fields which are critical points for the energy functional restricted to vector fields. We also see that do not exist any vector fields defining harmonic map, and the energy of critical points is explicitly calculated.
Let $Ω$ be a compact Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary and let $u_t$ be the solution of the heat equation on $Ω$, having constant unit initial data $u_0=1$ and Dirichlet boundary conditions ($u_t=0$ on the boundary, at all times). If at every time $t$ the normal derivative of $u_t$ is a constant function on the boundary, we say that $Ω$ has the {\it constant flow property}. This gives rise to an overdetermined parabolic problem, and our aim is to classify the manifolds having this property. In fact, if the metric is analytic, we prove that $Ω$ has the constant flow property if and only …
We consider the oscillator group equipped with a bi-invariant Lorentzian metric, and then some geometrical properties of this group i.e. homogeneous Ricci solitons and harmonicity properties of invariant vector fields are obtained. We also determine all vector fields which are critical points for the energy functional restricted to vector fields. Vector fields defining harmonic maps are also determined, and the energy of critical points is explicitly calculated.
We present a tensor description of Euclidean spaces that emphasizes the use of geometric vectors. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach by proving of a number of integral identities with vector integrands.
We study harmonic maps from surfaces coupled to a scalar and a two-form potential, which arise as critical points of the action of the full bosonic string. We investigate several analytic and geometric properties of these maps and prove an existence result by the heat flow method.
In this paper, we generalize the Cao-Yau's gradient estimate for the sum of squares of vector fields up to higher step under assumption of the generalized curvature-dimension inequality. With its applications, by deriving a curvature-dimension inequality, we are able to obtain the Li-Yau gradient estimate for the CR heat equation in a closed pseudohermitian manifold of nonvanishing torsion tensors. As consequences, we obtain the Harnack inequality and upper bound estimate for the CR heat kernel.
This survey intends to present the basic notions of Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT) through its paradigmatic application in the construction of the moduli space of holomorphic vector bundles. Special attention is paid to the notion of stability from different points of view and to the concept of maximal unstability, represented by the Harder-Narasimhan filtration and, from which, correspondences with the GIT picture and results derived from stratifications on the moduli space are discussed.
We address some fundamental questions concerning geometric analysis on Riemannian manifolds. It has been asked whether the $L^p$-Calderón-Zygmund inequalities extend to a reasonable class of non-compact Riemannian manifolds without the assumption of a positive injectivity radius. In the present paper, we give a positive answer for $1<p<2$ under the natural assumption of a lower bound on the Ricci curvature. For $p>2$, we complement the study in Güneysu-Pigola (2015) and derive sufficient geometric criteria for the validity of the Calderón-Zygmund inequality by adding Kato class bounds on the R…
