We present a new approach to Morse and Novikov theories, based on the deRham Federer theory of currents, using the finite volume flow technique of Harvey and Lawson. In the Morse case, we construct a noncompact analogue of the Morse complex, relating a Morse function to the cohomology with compact forward supports of the manifold. This complex is then used in Novikov theory, to obtain a geometric realization of the Novikov Complex as a complex of currents and a new characterization of Novikov Homology as cohomology with compact forward supports. Two natural ``backward-forward'' dualities are also established: a Lambda duality over the Novikov Ring and a Topological Vector Space duality over the reals.
The present paper contains an interpretation and generalization of Novikov's theory of Morse type inequalities for 1-forms in terms of Conley's theory for dynamical systems.
We view Dolbeault-Morse-Novikov cohomology H^{p,q}_η(X) as the cohomology of the sheaf Ω_{X,η}^p of η-holomorphic p-forms and give several bimeromorphic invariants. Analogue to Dolbeault cohomology, we establish the Leray-Hirsch theorem and the blow-up formula for Dolbeault-Morse-Novikov cohomology. At last, we consider the relations between Morse-Novikov cohomology and Dolbeault-Morse-Novikov cohomology, moreover, investigate stabilities of their dimensions under the deformations of complex structures. In some aspects, Morse-Novikov and Dolbeault-Morse-Novikov cohomology behave similarly with…
The idea of Lichnerowicz or Morse-Novikov cohomology groups of a manifold has been utilized by many researchers to study important properties and invariants of a manifold. Morse-Novikov cohomology is defined using the differential $d_ω=d+ω\wedge$, where $ω$ is a closed $1$-form. We study Morse-Novikov cohomology relative to a foliation on a manifold and its homotopy invariance and then extend it to more general type of forms on a Riemannian foliation. We study the Laplacian and Hodge decompositions for the corresponding differential operators on reduced leafwise Morse-Novikov complexes. In the…
Inspired by the recent works of S. Rao--S. Yang--X.-D. Yang and L. Meng on the blow-up formulae for de Rham and Morse--Novikov cohomology groups, we give a new simple proof of the blow-up formula for Morse--Novikov cohomology by introducing the relative Morse--Novikov cohomology group via sheaf cohomology theory and presenting the explicit isomorphism therein.
We use noncommutative localization to construct a chain complex which counts the critical points of a circle-valued Morse function on a manifold, generalizing the Novikov complex. As a consequence we obtain new topological lower bounds on the minimum number of critical points of a circle-valued Morse function within a homotopy class, generalizing the Novikov inequalities.
Let $M^n$ be a closed manifold of almost nonnegative sectional curvature and nonzero first de Rham cohomology group. For any $[θ] \in H^1_{dR}(M^n), [θ] \neq 0$, we show that the Morse- Novikov cohomology group $H^p(M^n, θ)$ vanishes for any $p$. A similar result holds for a closed manifold of almost nonnegative Ricci curvature under the additional assumption that its curvature operator is uniformly bounded from below.
In this paper we find sufficient conditions for the vanishing of the Morse-Novikov cohomology on Riemannian foliations. We work out a Bochner technique for twisted cohomological complexes, obtaining corresponding vanishing results. Also, we generalize for our setting vanishing results from the case of closed Riemannian manifolds. Several examples are presented, along with applications in the context of l.c.s. and l.c.K. foliations.
The Novikov complex of a circle-valued Morse function is constructed algebraically from the Morse-Smale complex of the restriction to a fundamental domain of the real-valued Morse function on the pullback infinite cyclic cover.
The Morse-Novikov number MN(L) of a smooth link L in the three-dimensional sphere is by definition the minimal possible number of critical points of a regular circle-valued Morse function on the link complement (the term regular means that the Morse function must have nice behaviour in a tubular neighbourhood of L). Novikov homology provides lower bounds for MN(L). In the present paper we introduce the notion of twisted Novikov homology, which allows to obtain better lower bounds for MN(L) than the usual Novikov homology. Our twisted Novikov homology is a module over the Novikov ring Z((t)) bu…
The works of Donaldson and Mark make the structure of the Seiberg-Witten invariant of 3-manifolds clear. It corresponds to certain torsion type invariants counting flow lines and closed orbits of a gradient flow of a circle-valued Morse map on a 3-manifold. We study these invariants using the Morse-Novikov theory and Heegaard splitting for sutured manifolds, and make detailed computations for knot complements.
The weight $θ$-sheaf $\underline{\mathbb{R}}_{X,θ}$ helps us to reinterpret Morse-Novikov cohomologies via sheaf theory. We give several theorems of Künneth and Leray-Hirsch types. As applications, we prove that the $θ$-Lefschetz number is independent of $θ$ and calculate the Morse-Novikov cohomologies of projective bundles. Based on these results, we give two blow-up formulae on (\emph{not necessarily compact}) complex manifolds, where the self-intersection formulae play a key role in establishing the explicit expressions for them.
In this paper we continue the study of generic properties of the Novikov complex, began in the work "The incidence coefficients in the Novikov complex are generically rational functions" ( dg-ga/9603006). For a Morse map $f:M\to S^1$ there is a refined version of Novikov complex, defined over the Novikov completion of the fundamental group ring. We prove that for a $C^0$ generic $f$-gradient the corresponding incidence coefficients belong to the image in the Novikov ring of a (non commutative) localization of the fundamental group ring. The Novikov construction generalizes also to the case of …
It is shown that the topological phenomenon "zero in the continuous spectrum", discovered by S.P.Novikov and M.A.Shubin, can be explained in terms of a homology theory on the category of finite polyhedra with values in certain abelian category. This approach implies homotopy invariance of the Novikov-Shubin invariants. Its main advantage is that it allows to use the standard homological techniques, such as spectral sequences, derived functors, universal coefficients etc., while studying the Novikov-Shubin invariants. It also leads to some new quantitative invariants, measuring the Novikov-Shub…
We discuss the Morse-Novikov cohomology of a compact manifold, associated to a closed one--form whose free abelian group generated by its periods $\langle \int_γη\mid [γ] \in π_1(M)\rangle$ is of rank 1, the focus being on locally conformally symplectic manifolds. In particular, we provide an explicit computation for the Inoue surface $\mathcal{S}^0$.
We consider systems $(M,ω,g)$ with $M$ a closed smooth manifold, $ω$ a real valued closed one form and $g$ a Riemannian metric, so that $(ω,g)$ is a Morse-Smale pair, Definition~2. We introduce a numerical invariant $ρ(ω,g)\in[0,\infty]$ and improve Morse-Novikov theory by showing that the Novikov complex comes from a cochain complex of free modules over a subring $Λ'_{[ω],ρ}$ of the Novikov ring $Λ_{[ω]}$ which admits surjective ring homomorphisms $\ev_s:Λ'_{[ω],ρ}\to\C$ for any complex number $s$ whose real part is larger than $ρ$. We extend Witten-Helffer-Sjöstrand results from a pair $(h,g…
One of the basic objects in the Morse theory of circle-valued maps is Novikov complex - an analog of the Morse complex of Morse functions. Novikov complex is defined over the ring of Laurent power series with finite negative part. The main aim of this paper is to present a detailed and self-contained exposition of the author's theorem saying that C^0-generically the Novikov complex is defined over the ring of rational functions. The paper contains also a systematic treatment of the topics of the classical Morse theory related to Morse complexes (Chapter 2). We work with a new class of gradient…
We review the properties of the Morse-Novikov cohomology and compute it for all known compact complex surfaces with locally conformally Kähler metrics. We present explicit computations for the Inoue surfaces $\mathcal{S}^0$, $\mathcal{S}^+$, $\mathcal{S}^-$ and classify the locally conformally Kähler (and the tamed locally conformally symplectic) forms on $\mathcal{S}^0$. We prove the nonexistence of LCK metrics with potential and more generally, of $d_θ$-exact LCK metrics on Inoue surfaces and Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds.
A locally conformally Kahler (LCK) manifold is a complex manifold admitting a Kahler covering, with the monodromy acting on this covering by homotheties. We define three cohomology invariants, the Lee class, the Morse-Novikov class, and the Bott-Chern class, of an LCK-structure. These invariants together play the same role as the Kahler class in Kahler geometry. If these classes for two LCK-structures coincide, the difference between these structures can be expressed by a smooth potential, similar to the Kahler case. We show that the Morse-Novikov class and the Bott-Chern class of a Vaisman ma…
We study the cohomology $H^*_{λω}(G/Γ, {\mathbb C})$ of the deRham complex $Λ^*(G/Γ)\otimes{\mathbb C}$ of a compact solvmanifold $G/Γ$ with a deformed differential $d_{λω}=d + λω$, where $ω$ is a closed 1-form. This cohomology naturally arises in the Morse-Novikov theory. We show that for a solvable Lie group $G$ with a completely solvable Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and a cocompact lattice $Γ\subset G$ the cohomology $H^*_{λω}(G/Γ, {\mathbb C})$ coincides with the cohomology $H^*_{λω}(\mathfrak{g})$ of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ associated with the one-dimensional representation $ρ_{λω}: …
In this paper we construct a Universal chain complex, counting zeros of closed 1-forms on a manifold. The Universal complex is a refinement of the well known Novikov complex; it relates the homotopy type of the manifold, after a suitable noncommutative localization, with the numbers of zeros of different indices which may have closed 1-forms within a given cohomology class. The Main Theorem of the paper generalizes the result of a joint paper with A. Ranicki, which treats the special case of closed 1-forms having integral cohomology classes. The present paper also describes a number of new ine…
Let f be a Morse map from a closed manifold to a circle. S.P.Novikov constructed an analog of the Morse complex for f. The Novikov complex is a chain complex defined over the ring of Laurent power series with integral coefficients and finite negative part. This complex depends on the choice of a gradient-like vector field. The homotopy type of the Novikov complex is the same as the homotopy type of the completed complex of the simplicial chains of the cyclic covering associated to f. In the present paper we prove that for every C^0-generic f-gradient there is a homotopy equivalence between the…
Given a $1$-cohomology class $u$ on a closed manifold $M$, we define a Novikov fundamental group associated to $u$, generalizing the usual fundamental group in the same spirit as Novikov homology generalizes Morse homology to the case of non exact $1$-forms. As an application, lower bounds for the minimal number of index $1$ and $2$ critical points of Morse closed $1$-forms are obtained, that are different in nature from those derived from the Novikov homology.
For a Morse map $f:M\to S^1$ Novikov [11] has introduced an analog of Morse complex, defined over the ring $\ZZZ[[t]][t^{-1}]$ of integer Laurent power series. Novikov conjectured, that generically the matrix entries of the differentials in this complex are of the form $\sum_ia_it^i$, where $a_i$ grow at most exponentially in $i$. We prove that for any given $f$ for a $C^0$ generic gradient-like vector field all the incidence coefficients above are rational functions in $t$ (which implies obviously the exponential growth rate estimate).
We extend the Novikov Morse-type inequalities for closed 1-forms in 2 directions. First, we consider manifolds with boundary. Second, we allow a very degenerate structure of the critical set of the form, assuming only that the form is non-degenerated in the sense of Kirwan. In particular, we obtain a generalization of a result of Floer about the usual Morse inequalities on a manifold with boundary. We also obtain an equivariant version of our inequalities. Our proof is based on an application of the Witten deformation technique. The main novelty here is that we consider the neighborhood of the…
We compute the Poisson cohomology of a scalar Poisson bracket of Dubrovin-Novikov type with $D$ independent variables. We find that the second and third cohomology groups are generically non-vanishing in $D>1$. Hence, in contrast with the $D=1$ case, the deformation theory in the multivariable case is non-trivial.
In this article, we first consider the $L^{2}$ \textit{Morse-Novikov cohomology} on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$ equipped with a parallel $1$-form which includes Vaisman manifold. Based on a vanishing theorem of $L^{2}$ \textit{Morse-Novikov cohomology}, we prove that the $L^{2}$-harmonic forms on $M$ are identically zero.
Let $ω$ be a Morse form on a manifold $M$. Let $p:\hat M\to M$ be a regular covering with structure group $G$, such that $p^*([ω])=0$. Let $ξ:G\to\mathbf{R}$ be the corresponding period homomorphism. Denote by ${\hat Λ}_ξ$ the Novikov completion of the group ring $\mathbf{Z} G$. Choose a transverse $ω$-gradient $v$. Counting the flow lines of $v$ one defines the Novikov complex $\mathcal{N}_*$ freely generated over ${\hat Λ}_ξ$ by the set of zeroes of $ω$. In this paper we introduce a refinement of this construction. We define a subring $\hatΛ_Γ$ of ${\hat Λ}_ξ$ and show that the Novikov compl…
We use K-area homology to summarize some results about the Novikov conjecture and the Hirzebruch L-class. In fact, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for closed manifolds to have a homotopy invariant L-class. In order to obtain additional properties we also introduce the cohomology of infinite K--area which preserves the cup product of singular cohomology.
Main theorem of this paper states that Floer cohomology groups in a Hilbert space are isomorphic to the cohomological Conley Index. It is also shown that calculating cohomological Conley Index does not require finite dimensional approximations of the vector field. Further directions are discussed.
We establish an equivariant generalization of the Novikov inequalities which allow to estimate the topology of the set of critical points of a closed basic invariant form by means of twisted equivariant cohomology of the manifold. We apply these inequalities to study cohomology of the fixed points set of a symplectic torus action. We show that in this case our inequalities are perfect, i.e. they are in fact equalities.
The main result of this paper is non-vanishing of the image of the index map from the $G$-equivariant $K$-homology of a proper $G$-compact $G$-manifold $X$ to the $K$-theory of the $C^{*}$-algebra of the group $G$. Under the assumption that the Kronecker pairing of a $K$-homology class with a low-dimensional cohomology class is non-zero, we prove that the image of this class under the index map is non-zero. Neither discreteness of the locally compact group $G$ nor freeness of the action of $G$ on $X$ are required. The case of free actions of discrete groups was considered earlier by B. Hanke a…
We construct a deformed Morse complex computing the equivariant cohomology of a manifold M endowed with a smooth S^1-action. The deformation of the coboundary operator is given by counting gradient flow lines of a Morse function f that are allowed to "jump" along orbits of the S^1-action for finite time intervalls.
Let X be a finite CW-complex, denote its fundamental group by G. Let R be an n-dimensional complex repesentation of G. Any element A of the first cohomology group of X with complex coefficients gives rise to the exponential deformation of the representation R, which can be considered as a curve in the space of representations. We show that the cohomology of X with local coefficients corresponding to the generic point of this curve is computable from a spectral sequence starting from the cohomology of X with R-twisted coefficients. We compute the differentials of the spectral sequence in terms …
This article arose from a series of three lectures given at the Banach Center, Warsaw, during period of 24 March to 13 April, 2003. Morse functions are useful tool in revealing the geometric formation of its domain manifolds $M$. They define the handle decompositions of $M$ from which the additive homologies $H_{\ast}(M)$ may be constructed. In these lectures two further questions were emphasized. (1) How to find a Morse function on a given manifold? (2) From Morse functions can one derive the multiplicative cohomology rather than the additive homology?
A locally conformally Kahler (LCK) manifold is a complex manifold with a Kahler structure on its covering and the deck transform group acting on it by holomorphic homotheties. One could think of an LCK manifold as of a complex manifold with a Kahler form taking values in a local system $L$, called the conformal weight bundle. The $L$-valued cohomology of $M$ is called Morse-Novikov cohomology. It was conjectured that (just as it happens for Kahler manifolds) the Morse-Novikov complex satisfies the $dd^c$-lemma. If true, it would have far-reaching consequences for the geometry of LCK manifolds.…
We study spectral behavior of the complex Laplacian on forms with values in the $k^{\text{th}}$ tensor power of a holomorphic line bundle over a smoothly bounded domain with degenerated boundary in a complex manifold. In particular, we prove that in the two dimensional case, a pseudoconvex domain is of finite type if and only if for any positive constant $C$, the number of eigenvalues of the $\overline\partial$-Neumann Laplacian less than or equal to $Ck$ grows polynomially as $k$ tends to infinity.
We develop the theory of twisted L^2-cohomology and twisted spectral invariants for flat Hilbertian bundles over compact manifolds. They can be viewed as functions on the first de Rham cohomology of M and they generalize the standard notions. A new feature of the twisted L^2-cohomology theory is that in addition to satisfying the standard L^2 Morse inequalities, they also satisfy certain asymptotic L^2 Morse inequalities. These reduce to the standard Morse inequalities in the finite dimensional case, and when the Morse 1-form is exact. We define the extended twisted L^2 de Rham cohomology and …
The main goal of this paper is to give a unified treatment to many known cuplength estimates. As the base case, we prove that for $C^0$-perturbations of a function which is Morse-Bott along a closed submanifold, the number of critical points is bounded below in terms of the cuplength of that critical submanifold. As we work with rather general assumptions the proof also applies in a variety of Floer settings. For example, this proves lower bounds for the number of fixed points of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, Hamiltonian chords for Lagrangian submanifolds, translated points of contactomorphisms…
We prove a version of the Arnol'd conjecture for Lagrangian submanifolds of conformal symplectic manifolds: a Lagrangian $L$ which has non-zero Morse-Novikov homology for the restriction of the Lee form $β$ cannot be disjoined from itself by a $C^0$-small Hamiltonian isotopy. Furthermore for generic such isotopies the number of intersection points equals at least the sum of the free Betti numbers of the Morse-Novikov homology of $β$. We also give a short exposition of conformal symplectic geometry, aimed at readers who are familiar with (standard) symplectic or contact geometry.
S.P.Novikov developed an analog of the Morse theory for closed 1-forms. In this paper I suggest an analog of the Lusternik - Schnirelman theory for closed 1-forms.
Oeljeklaus-Toma (OT) manifolds are complex non-Kähler manifolds whose construction arises from specific number fields. In this note, we compute their de Rham cohomology in terms of invariants associated to the background number field. This is done by two distinct approaches, one using invariant cohomology and the other one using the Leray-Serre spectral sequence. In addition, we compute also their Morse-Novikov cohomology. As an application, we show that the low degree Chern classes of any complex vector bundle on an OT manifold vanish in the real cohomology. Other applications concern the OT …
Let $f$ be a Morse function on a closed manifold $M$, and $v$ be a Riemannian gradient of $f$ satisfying the transversality condition. The classical construction (due to Morse, Smale, Thom, Witten), based on the counting of flow lines joining critical points of the function $f$ associates to these data the Morse complex $M_*(f,v)$. In the present paper we introduce a new class of vector fields ($f$-gradients) associated to a Morse function $f$. This class is wider than the class of Riemannian gradients and provides a natural framework for the study of the Morse complex. Our construction of the…
We discuss controlled connectivity properties of closed 1-forms and their cohomology classes and relate them to the simple homotopy type of the Novikov complex. The degree of controlled connectivity of a closed 1-form depends only on positive multiples of its cohomology class and is related to the Bieri-Neumann-Strebel-Renz invariant. It is also related to the Morse theory of closed 1-forms. Given a controlled 0-connected cohomology class on a manifold M with n = dim M > 4 we can realize it by a closed 1-form which is Morse without critical points of index 0, 1, n-1 and n. If n = dim M > 5 and…
We consider the closed orbit structure of generic gradient flows of Morse closed 1-forms. The torsion of a chain homotopy equivalence between the Novikov complex and the completed simplicial chain complex of the universal cover detects the eta function of the flow. We extend this result to arbitrary Morse closed 1-forms. The case of rational forms was considered by A. Pajitnov.
We develop an analytic framework for Lefschetz fixed point theory and Morse theory for Hilbert complexes on stratified pseudomanifolds. We develop formulas for both global and local Lefschetz numbers and Morse, Poincaré polynomials as (polynomial) supertraces over cohomology groups of Hilbert complexes, developing techniques for relating local and global quantities using heat kernel and Witten deformation based methods. We focus on the case where the metric is wedge and the Hilbert complex is associated to a Dirac-type operator and satisfies the Witt condition, constructing Lefschetz versions …
Transcendental holomorphic Morse inequalities aim at characterizing the positivity of transcendental cohomology classes of type $(1,1)$. In this paper, we prove a weak version of Demailly's conjecture on transcendental Morse inequalities on compact Kähler manifolds. And as a consequence, we partially improve a result of Boucksom-Demailly-Paun-Peternell.
Let $Γ$ be a finite d-valent graph and G an n-dimensional torus. An ``action'' of G on $Γ$ is defined by a map, $α$, which assigns to each oriented edge e of $Γ$ a one-dimensional representation of G (or, alternatively, a weight, $α_e$, in the weight lattice of G). For the assignment, $e \to α_e$, to be a schematic description of a ``G-action'', these weights have to satisfy certain compatibility conditions: the GKM axioms. We attach to $(Γ, α)$ an equivariant cohomology ring, $H_G(Γ)=H(Γ,α)$. By definition this ring contains the equivariant cohomology ring of a point, $\SS(\fg^*) = H_G(pt)$, …
Consider an action of a connected compact Lie group on a compact complex manifold $M$, and two equivariant vector bundles $L$ and $E$ on $M$, with $L$ of rank 1. The purpose of this paper is to establish holomorphic Morse inequalities à la Demailly for the invariant part of the Dolbeault cohomology of tensor powers of $L$ twisted by $E$. To do so, we define a moment map $μ$ by the Kostant formula and we define the reduction of $M$ under a natural hypothesis on $μ^{-1}(0)$. Our inequalities are given in term of the curvature of the bundle induced by $L$ on this reduction.
Let p: M -> B be a family of compact manifolds equipped with a unitarily flat vector bundle F -> M. We generalize Igusa's higher Franz-Reidemeister torsion τ(M/B;F) to the case that the fibre-wise cohomology H^*(M/B;F) -> B carries a parallel metric. If moreover M admits a fibre-wise Morse function, we compute the difference of τ(M/B;F) and the higher analytic torsion \Cal T(M/B;F). We also generalise the examples given in math.DG/0111222 .
