Motivated by the picture of mirror symmetry suggested by Strominger, Yau and Zaslow, we made a conjecture concerning the Gromov-Hausdorff limits of Calabi-Yau n-folds (with Ricci-flat Kähler metric) as one approaches a large complex structure limit point in moduli; a similar conjecture was made independently by Kontsevich, Soibelman and Todorov. Roughly stated, the conjecture says that, if the metrics are normalized to have constant diameter, then this limit is the base of the conjectural special lagrangian torus fibration associated with the large complex structure limit, namely an n-sphere, and that the metric on this S^n is induced from a standard (singular) Riemannian metric on the base, the singularities of the metric corresponding to the discriminant locus of the fibration.
This conjecture is trivially true for elliptic curves; in this paper we prove it in the case of K3 surfaces. Using the standard description of mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces and the hyperkähler rotation trick, we reduce the problem to that of studying Kähler degenerations of elliptic K3 surfaces, with the Kähler class approaching the wall of the Kähler cone corresponding to the fibration and the volume normalized to be one. Here we are able to write down a remarkably accurate approximation to the Ricci-flat metric -- if the elliptic fibres are of area $ε>0$, then the error is $O(e^{-C/ε})$ for some constant $C>0$. This metric is obtained by gluing together a semi-flat metric on the smooth part of the fibration with suitable Ooguri-Vafa metrics near the singular fibres. For small $ε$, this is a sufficiently good approximation that the above conjecture is then an easy consequence.
We point out how some recent developments in the theory of constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics can be used to clarify the existence issue for such metrics in the special case of geometrically ruled complex surfaces.
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a non-degenerate symmetric 3-differential with nonzero Blaschke curvature on a complex surface to be locally representable as a product of three closed holomorphic 1-forms. We give two versions of this condition corresponding to different choices of coordinates, one of which defines a coordinate-free differential operator, answering a question of Bogomolov and de Oliveira.
We derive a sharp cusp count for finite volume complex hyperbolic surfaces which admit smooth toroidal compactifications. We use this result, and the techniques developed in [DiC12], to study the geometry of cusped complex hyperbolic surfaces and their compactifications.
In this paper we investigate surfaces in $\mathbb C P^2$ without complex points and characterize the minimal surfaces without complex points and the minimal Lagrangian surfaces by Ruh-Vilms type theorems. We also discuss the liftability of an immersion from a surface to $\mathbb C P^2$ into $S^5$ in Appendix A.
We show that if a compact complex surface admits a locally conformally flat metric, then it cannot contain a smooth rational curve of odd self-intersection. In particular, the surface has to be minimal. Then we give a list of possibilities of such surfaces.
We give a classification of compact solitons for the pluriclosed flow on complex surfaces. First, by exploiting results from the Kodaira classification of surfaces, we show that the complex surface underlying a soliton must be Kähler except for the possibility of steady solitons on minimal Hopf surfaces. Then, we construct steady solitons on all class $1$ Hopf surfaces by exploiting a natural symmetry ansatz.
The space $SL(2,\mathbb{R})\times SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ admits a natural homogeneous pseudo-Riemannian nearly Kaehler structure. We investigate almost complex surfaces in this space. In particular we obtain a complete classification of the totally geodesic almost complex surfaces and of the almost complex surfaces with parallel second fundamental form.
In the late 1990s, B. Y. Chen introduced the notion of special slant surfaces in Kähler surfaces and classified non-minimal proper special slant surfaces with constant mean curvature in $2$-dimensional complex space forms. In this paper, we completely classify proper special slant surfaces with non-constant mean curvature in $2$-dimensional complex space forms.
In this article, we consider Cayley deformations of a compact complex surface in a Calabi--Yau four-fold. We will study complex deformations of compact complex submanifolds of Calabi--Yau manifolds with a view to explaining why complex and Cayley deformations of a compact complex surface are the same. We in fact prove that the moduli space of complex deformations of any compact complex embedded submanifold of a Calabi--Yau manifold is a smooth manifold.
In this article we study minimal flat Lorentzian surfaces in Lorentzian complex space forms. First we prove that, for minimal flat Lorentzian surfaces in a Lorentzian complex form, the equation of Ricci is a consequence of the equations of Gauss and Codazzi. Then we classify minimal flat Lorentzian surfaces in the Lorentzian complex plane ${\bf C}^2_1$. Finally, we classify minimal flat slant surfaces in Lorentzian complex projective plane $CP^2_1$ and in Lorentzian complex hyperbolic plane $CH^2_1$.
We prove that every compact complex surface with odd first Betti number admits a locally conformally symplectic $2$-form which tames the underlying almost complex structure.
We propose the study of a conformally invariant functional for surfaces of complex projective plane which is closely related to the classical Willmore functional. We show that minimal surfaces of complex projective plane are critical for this functional and construct some minima for it via the twistors spaces of complex projective plane. Also, we find lower bounds for this functional and for its restriction to the class of Lagrangian surfaces and characterize the complex lines and the Lagrangian totally geodesic surfaces and the Whitney spheres as the only attaining those bounds.
Representations of Dirac-Hestenes and Dirac spinor fields via coordinates of surfaces conformally immersed into 4-dimensional complex space are proposed. A relation between time evolution of spinor fields and integrable deformations of surfaces is discussed.
This is a continuation of our previous paper [14]. In [14], we introduced the first Aeppli-Chern class on compact complex manifolds, and proved that the $(1,1)$ curvature form of the Levi-Civita connection represents the first Aeppli-Chern class which is a natural link between Riemannian geometry and complex geometry. In this paper, we study the geometry of compact complex manifolds with Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics and classify minimal complex surfaces with Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics. More precisely, we show that minimal complex surfaces admitting Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics are Kähl…
The complex projective space $\mathbb C P^2$ of complex dimension $2$ has a Spin$^c$ structure carrying Kählerian Killing spinors. The restriction of one of these Kählerian Killing spinors to a surface $M^2$ characterizes the isometric immersion of $M^2$ into $\mathbb C P^2$ if the immersion is either Lagrangian or complex.
We prove that locally conformally Kähler metrics on certain compact complex surfaces with odd first Betti number can be deformed to new examples of bi-Hermitian metrics.
We study Bott-Chern cohomology on compact complex non-Kähler surfaces. In particular, we compute such a cohomology for compact complex surfaces in class $\text{VII}$ and for compact complex surfaces diffeomorphic to solvmanifolds.
We study almost complex surfaces in the nearly Kähler $S^3\times S^3$. We show that there is a local correspondence between almost complex surfaces and solutions of the H-surface equation introduced by Wente. We find a global holomorphic differential on every almost complex surface, and show that when this differential vanishes, then the corresponding solution of the H-surface equation gives a constant mean curvature surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We use this, together with a theorem of Hopf, to classify all almost complex 2-spheres. In fact there is essentially only one, and it is totally geodes…
We construct first examples of discrete geometrically finite subgroups of PU(2,1) which contain parabolic elements, and are isomorphic to surface groups.
We construct harmonic diffeomorphisms from the complex plane $C$ onto any Hadamard surface $M$ whose curvature is bounded above by a negative constant. For that, we prove a Jenkins-Serrin type theorem for minimal graphs in $M\times R$ over domains of $M$ bounded by ideal geodesic polygons and show the existence of a sequence of minimal graphs over polygonal domains converging to an entire minimal graph in $M\times R$ with the conformal structure of $C$.
We classify the Lagrangian orientable surfaces in complex space forms with the property that the ellipse of curvature is always a circle. As a consequence, we obtain new characterizations of the Clifford torus of the complex projective plane and of the Whitney spheres in the complex projective, complex Euclidean and complex hyperbolic planes.
The last years have seen striking improvements on Vaisman's question about existence of locally conformally Kähler (lcK) metrics on compact complex surfaces. The aim of this paper is two-fold. We review results of different authors which, for all known examples of compact complex surfaces, give a complete answer to Vaisman's question. We also point out a relation between lcK surfaces and generalized Kähler geometry in four-dimension and prove a new result concerning generalized Kähler structures on Hyperbolic Inoue surfaces. We conclude with a simple observation on a question of Brunella.
Streets and Tian introduced a parabolic flow of pluriclosed metrics. We classify the long time behavior of homogeneous solutions of this flow on closed complex surfaces including minimal Hopf, Inoue, Kodaira, and non-Kahler, properly elliptic surfaces. We also construct expanding soliton solutions to the flow on the universal covers of these surfaces by taking blowdown limits of these homogeneous solutions.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a quasi-biharmonic submanifold in a pseudo-Riemannian manifold and classify quasi-biharmonic marginally trapped Lagrangian surfaces in Lorentzian complex space forms.
In this paper almost complex surfaces of the nearly Kähler $S^3\times S^3$ are studied in a systematic way. We show that on such a surface it is possible to define a global holomorphic differential, which is induced by an almost product structure on the nearly Kähler $S^3\times S^3$. We also find a correspondence between almost complex surfaces in the nearly Kähler $S^3\times S^3$ and solutions of the general $H$-system equation introduced by Wente, thus obtaining a geometric interpretation of solutions of the general $H$-system equation. From this we deduce a correspondence between constant m…
We give a comparative description of the Poisson structures on the moduli spaces of flat connections on real surfaces and holomorphic Poisson structures on the moduli spaces of holomorphic bundles on complex surfaces. The symplectic leaves of the latter are classified by restrictions of the bundles to certain divisors. This can be regarded as fixing a "complex analogue of the holonomy" of a connection along a "complex analogue of the boundary" in analogy with the real case.
In this article we consider PMC surfaces in complex space forms, and we study the interaction between the notions of PMC, totally real and biconservative. We first consider PMC surfaces in non-flat complex space forms and we prove that they are biconservative if and only if totally real. Then, we find a Simons type formula for a well-chosen vector field constructed from the mean curvature vector field. Next, we prove a rigidity result for CMC biconservative surfaces in 2-dimensional complex space forms. We prove then a reduction codimension result for PMC biconservative surfaces in non-flat co…
In this note we construct Mabuchi $\mathcal{L}^{\rm M}_ω$ functional and Aubin-Yau functionals $\mathcal{I}^{\rm AY}_ω, \mathcal{J}^{\rm AY}_ω$ on any compact complex surfaces, and establish a number of properties. Our construction coincides with the original one in the Kähler case.
We prove necessary and sufficient conditions for a smooth surface in a 4-manifold X to be pseudoholomorphic with respect to some almost complex structure on X. This provides a systematic approach to the construction of pseudoholomorphic curves that do not minimize the genus in their homology class.
Indefinite Kaehler solutions of the Einstein equations are studied, and it is almost completely determined which compact complex surfaces admit such metrics.
We estimate the dimensions of the spaces of holomorphic sections of certain line bundles to give improved lower bounds on the index of complex isotropic harmonic maps to complex projective space from the sphere and torus, and in some cases from higher genus surfaces.
In this paper we prove that a nonflat Kähler-Ricci soliton of the Ricci flow on a complex two-dimensional Kähler manifold with nonnegative holomorphic bisectional curvature can not be of maximal volume growth.
The purpose of this article is to determine explicitly the complete surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector, both in the complex projective plane and the complex hyperbolic plane. The main results are as follows: When the curvature of the ambient space is positive, there exists a unique such surface up to rigid motions of the target space. On the other hand, when the curvature of the ambient space is negative, there are `non-trivial' complete parallel mean curvature surfaces generated by Jacobi elliptic functions and they exhaust such surfaces.
The Chern-Ricci flow is an evolution equation of Hermitian metrics by their Chern-Ricci form, first introduced by Gill. Building on our previous work, we investigate this flow on complex surfaces. We establish new estimates in the case of finite time non-collapsing, anologous to some known results for the Kahler-Ricci flow. This provides evidence that the Chern-Ricci flow carries out blow-downs of exceptional curves on non-minimal surfaces. We also describe explicit solutions to the Chern-Ricci flow for various non-Kahler surfaces. On Hopf surfaces and Inoue surfaces these solutions, appropria…
In this note, we prove the existence of weak solutions of the Chern-Ricci flow through blow downs of exceptional curves, as well as backwards smooth convergence away from the exceptional curves on compact complex surfaces. The smoothing property for the Chern-Ricci flow is also obtained on compact Hermitian manifolds of dimension n under a mild assumption.
We study the problem of existence of F-structures on compact complex surfaces, giving a complete classification modulo the gap in the classification of surfaces of class VII. We then use these results to study the minimal entropy problem for compact complex surfaces. For instance we prove that compact Kahler surfaces of Kodaira number different from 2 have minimal entropy 0, and such a surface admits a metric with entropy 0 if and only if it is the complex projective space, a ruled surface of genus 0 or 1, a complex torus or a hyperelliptic surface. The key result we use to prove this, is a ne…
We construct metrics with the holonomy group SU(2) on the tangent bundles of weighted complex projective lines and give a geometric description of the moduli space of special Kahler metrics on a K3-surface in the neighborhood of the flat orbifold $T^4/Z_3$.
We give a condition under which the findings of the paper cited above work well and determine the surfaces that were not considered before. In this paper, we show that a parallel mean curvature surface of a general type in a complex two-dimensional complex space form depends on one real-valued harmonic function on the surface and five real constants if the ambient space is not flat, the mean curvature vector does not vanish, and the Kaehler angle is not constant.
It is known that complex constant mean curvature ({\sc CMC} for short) immersions in $\mathbb C^3$ are natural complexifications of {\sc CMC}-immersions in $\mathbb R^3$. In this paper, conversely we consider {\it real form surfaces} of a complex {\sc CMC}-immersion, which are defined from real forms of the twisted $\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbb C)$ loop algebra $Λ\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbb C)_σ$, and classify all such surfaces according to the classification of real forms of $Λ\mathfrak{sl}(2, \mathbb C)_σ$. There are seven classes of surfaces, which are called {\it integrable surfaces}, and all int…
Quotients $Y=X/conj$ of complex surfaces by anti-holomorphic involutions $conj\: X\to X$ tend to be completely decomposable when they are simply connected, i.e., split into connected sums, $n CP^2\#m\barCP2$, if $w_2(Y)\ne0$, or into $n(S^2\times S^2)$ if $w_2(Y)=0$. If $X$ is a double branched covering over $CP^2$, this phenomenon is related to unknottedness of Arnold surfaces in $S^4=CP^2/conj$, which was conjectured by V.Rokhlin. The paper contains proof of Rokhlin Conjecture and of decomposability of quotients for plenty of double planes and in certain other cases. This results give, in pa…
We prove that the deRham cohomology classes of Lee forms of locally conformally symplectic structures taming the complex structure of a compact complex surface $S$ with first Betti number equal to $1$ is either a non-empty open subset of $H^1_{dR}(S, \mathbb R)$, or a single point. In the latter case, we show that $S$ must be biholomorphic to a blow-up of an Inoue-Bombieri surface. Similarly, the deRham cohomology classes of Lee forms of locally conformally Kähler structures of a compact complex surface $S$ with first Betti number equal to $1$ is either a non-empty open subset of $H^1_{dR}(S, …
The quotients $Y=X/conj$ by the complex conjugation $conj\: X\to X$ for complex rational and Enriques surfaces $X$ defined over $\R$ are shown to be diffeomorphic to connected sums of $\barCP2$, whenever $Y$ are simply connected.
We recall fundamental aspects of the pluriclosed flow equation and survey various existence and convergence results, and the various analytic techniques used to establish them. Building on this, we formulate a precise conjectural description of the long time behavior of the flow on complex surfaces. This suggests an attendant geometrization conjecture which has implications for the topology of complex surfaces and the classification of generalized Kähler structures.
It is observed that for complex surfaces, the positivity of the Ricci curvature is preserved by the Kähler-Ricci flow, under the additional assumption that the sum of the two lowest eigenvalues of the traceless curvature operator is non-negative.
We study deformations of complex hyperbolic surfaces which furnish the simplest examples of: (i) negatively curved Kähler manifolds and (ii) negatively curved Riemannian manifolds not having {\it constant} curvature. Although such complex surfaces may share the rigidity of quaternionic/octionic hyperbolic manifolds, our main goal is to show that they enjoy nevertheless the flexibility of low-dimensional real hyperbolic manifolds. Namely we define a class of ``bending" deformations of a given (Stein) complex surface $M$ associated with its closed geodesics provided that $M$ is homotopy equivale…
We prove that holomorphic normal projective connections on compact complex surfaces are flat. We show that a holomorphic torsion-free affine connection $\nabla$ on a compact complex surface is locally modelled on a translations-invariant affine connection on $\C^2$, except if $\nabla$ is a generic connection on a principal elliptic bundle over a Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 2$, with odd first Betti number. In the last case, the local Killing Lie algebra is of dimension one, generated by the fundamental vector field of the principal fibration.
We show that the Clifford torus and the totally geodesic real projective plane RP^2 in the complex projective plane CP^2 are the unique Hamiltonian stable minimal Lagrangian compact surfaces of CP^2 with genus less than or equal to 4, when the surface is orientable, and with Euler characteristic greater than or equal to -1, when the surface is nonorientable. Also we characterize RP^2 in CP^2 as the least possible index minimal Lagrangian compact nonorientable surface of CP^2.
