We describe some numerical experiments which determine the degree of spectral instability of medium size randomly generated matrices which are far from self-adjoint. The conclusion is that the eigenvalues are likely to be intrinsically uncomputable for similar matrices of a larger size. We also describe a stochastic family of bounded operators in infinite dimensions for almost all of which the eigenvectors generate a dense linear subspace, but the eigenvalues do not determine the spectrum. Our results imply that the spectrum of the non-self-adjoint Anderson model changes suddenly as one passes to the infinite volume limit.
This paper considers $N\times N$ matrices of the form $A_γ=A+ γB$, where $A$ is self-adjoint, $γ\in C$ and $B$ is a non-self-adjoint perturbation of $A$. We obtain some monodromy-type results relating the spectral behaviour of such matrices in the two asymptotic regimes $|γ|\to\infty$ and $|γ|\to 0$ under certain assumptions on $B$. We also explain some properties of the spectrum of $A_γ$ for intermediate sized $γ$ by considering the limit $N\to\infty$, concentrating on properties that have no self-adjoint analogue. A substantial number of the results extend to operators on infinite-dimensiona…
We provide quantitative inductive estimates for Green's functions of matrices with (sub)expoentially decaying off diagonal entries in higher dimensions. Together with Cartan's estimates and discrepancy estimates, we establish explicit bounds for the large deviation theorem for non-self-adjoint Toeplitz operators. As applications, we obtain the modulus of continuity of the integrated density of states with explicit bounds and the pure point spectrum property for analytic quasi-periodic operators. Moreover, our inductions are self-improved and work for perturbations with low complexity interacti…
We propose a way to study one-dimensional statistical mechanics models with complex-valued action using transfer operators. The argument consists of two steps. First, the contour of integration is deformed so that the associated transfer operator is a perturbation of a normal one. Then the transfer operator is studied using methods of semi-classical analysis. In this paper we concentrate on the second step, the main technical result being a semi-classical estimate for powers of an integral operator which is approximately normal.
We consider a set of measures on the real line and the corresponding system of multiple orthogonal polynomials (MOPs) of the first and second type. Under some very mild assumptions, which are satisfied by Angelesco systems, we define self-adjoint Jacobi matrices on certain rooted trees. We express their Green's functions and the matrix elements in terms of MOPs. This provides a generalization of the well-known connection between the theory of polynomials orthogonal on the real line and Jacobi matrices on $\mathbb{Z}_+$ to higher dimension. We illustrate importance of this connection by proving…
In the terms of triples $D^+\to H\to D^-$ of Hilbert spaces we construct an analogue of Friedrichs's extension for operator matrices. Also we establish some general approach to construction of variational principles for such matrices.
We study the spectrum of unbounded J-self-adjoint block operator matrices. In particular, we prove enclosures for the spectrum, provide a sufficient condition for the spectrum being real and derive variational principles for certain real eigenvalues even in the presence of non-real spectrum. The latter lead to lower and upper bounds and asymptotic estimates for eigenvalues.
Resolution of a compact group action in the sense described by Albin and Melrose is applied to the conjugation action by the unitary group on self-adjoint matrices. It is shown that the eigenvalues are smooth on the resolved space and that the trivial bundle smoothly decomposes into the direct sum of global one-dimensional eigenspaces.
In the first part of this manuscript a relationship between the spectrum of self-adjoint operator matrices and the spectra of their diagonal entries is found. This leads to enclosures for spectral points and in particular, enclosures for eigenvalues. We also consider graph invariant subspaces, and their corresponding angular operators. The existence of a bounded angular operator leads to basis properties of the first component of eigenvectors of operator matrices for which the corresponding eigenvalues lie in a half line. The results are applied to an example from magnetohydrodynamics.
We provide a comparative treatment of some aspects of spectral theory for self-adjoint and non-self-adjoint (but J-self-adjoint) Dirac-type operators connected with the defocusing and focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, of relevance to nonlinear optics. In addition to a study of Dirac and Hamiltonian systems, we also introduce the concept of Weyl-Titchmarsh half-line m-coefficients (and 2 x 2 matrix-valued M-matrices) in the non-self-adjoint context and derive some of their basic properties. We conclude with an illustrative example showing that crossing spectral arcs in the non-self-adjoi…
We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for a one-dimensional periodic Schrödinger (i.e., Hill) operator H=-d^2/dx^2+V in L^2(R) to be a spectral operator of scalar type. The conditions demonstrate the remarkable fact that the property of a Hill operator being a spectral operator is independent of smoothness (or even analyticity) properties of the potential V.
We study location of eigenvalues of one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operators with complex $\ell^{p}$-potentials for $1\leq p\leq \infty$. In the case of $\ell^{1}$-potentials, the derived bound is shown to be optimal. For $p>1$, two different spectral bounds are obtained. The method relies on the Birman-Schwinger principle and various techniques for estimations of the norm of the Birman-Schwinger operator.
We develop direct and inverse spectral analysis for finite and semi-infinite non-self-adjoint Jacobi matrices with a rank one imaginary part. It is shown that given a set of $n$ not necessarily distinct non-real numbers in the open upper (lower) half-plane uniquely determines a n x n Jacobi matrix with a rank one imaginary part having those numbers as its eigenvalues counting multiplicity. An algorithm for reconstruction for such finite Jacobi matrices is presented. A new model complementing the well known Livsic triangular model for bounded linear operators with rank one imaginary part is obt…
A simple iterative scheme is proposed for locating the parameter values for which a 2-parameter family of real symmetric matrices has a double eigenvalue. The convergence is proved to be quadratic. An extension of the scheme to complex Hermitian matrices (with 3 parameters) and to location of triple eigenvalues (5 parameters for real symmetric matrices) is also described. Algorithm convergence is illustrated in several examples: a real symmetric family, a complex Hermitian family, a family of matrices with an "avoided crossing" (no covergence) and a 5-parameter family of real symmetric matrice…
Given a locally finite simple graph so that its degree is not bounded, every self-adjoint realization of the adjacency matrix is unbounded from above. In this note we give an optimal condition to ensure it is also unbounded from below. We also consider the case of weighted graphs. We discuss the question of self-adjoint extensions and prove an optimal criterium.
A general representation formula for the scattering matrix of a scattering system consisting of two self-adjoint operators in terms of an abstract operator valued Titchmarsh-Weyl $m$-function is proved. This result is applied to scattering problems for different self-adjoint realizations of Schrödinger operators on unbounded domains, Schrödinger operators with singular potentials supported on hypersurfaces, and orthogonal couplings of Schrödinger operators. In these applications the scattering matrix is expressed in an explicit form with the help of Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps.
We consider non-self-adjoint operators in Hilbert spaces of the form $H=H_0+CWC$, where $H_0$ is self-adjoint, $W$ is bounded and $C$ is a metric operator, $C$ bounded and relatively compact with respect to $H_0$. We suppose that $C(H_0-z)^{-1}C$ is uniformly bounded in $z\in\mathbb{C}\setminus\mathbb{R}$. We define the spectral singularities of $H$ as the points of the essential spectrum $λ\inσ_{\mathrm{ess}}(H)$ such that $C(H\pm i\varepsilon)^{-1}CW$ does not have a limit as $\varepsilon\to0^+$. We prove that the spectral singularities of $H$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the eigenv…
We consider Dirac, Pauli and Schrödinger quantum magnetic Hamiltonians of full rank in ${\rm L}^2 \big(\mathbb{R}^{2d} \big)$, $d \ge 1$, perturbed by non-self-adjoint (matrix-valued) potentials. On the one hand, we show the existence of non-self-adjoint perturbations, generating near each point of the essential spectrum of the operators, infinitely many (complex) eigenvalues. In particular, we establish point spectrum analogous of Bögli results [Bög17] obtained for non-magnetic Laplacians, and hence showing that classical Lieb-Thirring inequalities cannot hold for our magnetic models. On the …
Given a self-adjoint operator H, a self-adjoint trace class operator V and a fixed Hilbert-Schmidt operator F with trivial kernel and co-kernel, using limiting absorption principle an explicit set of full Lebesgue measure is defined such that for all points of this set the wave and the scattering matrices can be defined and constructed unambiguously. Many well-known properties of the wave and scattering matrices and operators are proved, including the stationary formula for the scattering matrix. This new abstract scattering theory allows to prove that for any trace class perturbations of arbi…
On finite metric graphs we consider Laplace operators, subject to various classes of non-self-adjoint boundary conditions imposed at graph vertices. We investigate spectral properties, existence of a Riesz basis of projectors and similarity transforms to self-adjoint Laplacians. Among other things, we describe a simple way how to relate the similarity transforms between Laplacians on certain graphs with elementary similarity transforms between matrices defining the boundary conditions.
The paper deals with first order self-adjoint elliptic differential operators on a smooth compact oriented surface with non-empty boundary. We consider such operators with self-adjoint local boundary conditions. The paper is focused on paths in the space of such operators connecting two operators conjugated by a unitary automorphism. The first result is the computation of the spectral flow for such paths in terms of the topological data over the boundary. The second result is the universality of the spectral flow: we show that the spectral flow is a universal additive invariant for such paths,…
The paper concerns the spectral theory for a class of non-self-adjoint block convolution operators. We mainly discuss the spectral representations of such operators. It is considered the general case of operators defined on Banach spaces. The main results are applied to periodic Jacobi matrices.
Let $A$ be a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space $\fH$. Assume that the spectrum of $A$ consists of two disjoint components $σ_0$ and $σ_1$. Let $V$ be a bounded operator on $\fH$, off-diagonal and $J$-self-adjoint with respect to the orthogonal decomposition $\fH=\fH_0\oplus\fH_1$ where $\fH_0$ and $\fH_1$ are the spectral subspaces of $A$ associated with the spectral sets $σ_0$ and $σ_1$, respectively. We find (optimal) conditions on $V$ guaranteeing that the perturbed operator $L=A+V$ is similar to a self-adjoint operator. Moreover, we prove a number of (sharp) norm bounds on variation…
We consider the homogenization of a singularly perturbed self-adjoint fourth order elliptic equation with locally periodic coefficients, stated in a bounded domain. We impose Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary of the domain. The presence of large parameters in the lower order terms and the dependence of the coefficients on the slow variable give rise to the effect of localization of the eigenfunctions. We show that the $j$th eigenfunction can be approximated by a rescaled function that is constructed in terms of the $j$th eigenfunction of fourth or second order order effective opera…
In this paper we construct the spectral expansion for the non-self-adjoint differential operators generated in the space of vektor functions by the ordinary differential expression of arbitrary order with the periodic matrix coefficients by using the essential spectral singularities, singular quasimomenta and the series with parenthesis.
For a given self-adjoint operator $A$ with discrete spectrum, we completely characterize possible eigenvalues of its rank-one perturbations~$B$ and discuss the inverse problem of reconstructing $B$ from its spectrum.
We give a spectral description of the semi-classical Schrodinger operator with a piecewise linear, complex valued potential. Moreover, using these results, we show how an arbitrarily small bounded perturbation of a non-self-adjoint operator can completely change the spectrum of the operator.
We consider boundary conditions of self-adjoint banded Toeplitz matrices. We ask if boundary conditions exist for banded self-adjoint Toeplitz matrices which satisfy operator inequalities of Dirichlet-Neumann bracketing type. For a special class of banded Toeplitz matrices including integer powers of the discrete Laplacian we find such boundary conditions. Moreover, for this class we give a lower bound on the spectral gap above the lowest eigenvalue.
In this paper we construct the spectral expansion for the differential operator generated in all real line by ordinary differential expression of arbitrary order with periodic complex-valued coefficients by introducing new concepts as essential spectral singularities and singular quasimomenta and using the series with parenthesis. Moreover, we find a criteria for which the spectral expansion coincides with the Gelfand expansion for the self-adjoint case.
Using the resolvent operator, we develop an algorithm for computing smoothed approximations of spectral measures associated with self-adjoint operators. The algorithm can achieve arbitrarily high-orders of convergence in terms of a smoothing parameter for computing spectral measures of general differential, integral, and lattice operators. Explicit pointwise and $L^p$-error bounds are derived in terms of the local regularity of the measure. We provide numerical examples, including a partial differential operator, a magnetic tight-binding model of graphene, and compute one thousand eigenvalues …
We study the spectral theory of operators, generated as direct sums of self-adjoint extensions of quasi-differential minimal operators on a multi-interval set (self-adjoint vector-operators), acting in a Hilbert space. Spectral theorems for such operators are discussed, the structure of the ordered spectral representation is investigated for the case of differential coordinate operators. One of the main results is the construction of spectral resolutions. Finally, we study the matters connected with analytical decompositions of generalized eigenfunctions of such vector-operators and build a ma…
In this paper we investigate the non-self-adjoint operator H generated in all real line by the Mathieu-Hill equation with a complex-valued potential. We find a necessary and sufficient conditions on the potential for which H has no spectral singularity at infinity and it is an asymptotically spectral operator. Moreover, we give a detailed classification, stated in term of the potential, for the form of the spectral decomposition of the operator H by investigating the essential spectral singularities.
Let $u=\int_{-\infty}^{+\infty}λdE_λ$ be a self-adjoint operator in a Hilbert space $H$. Our purpose is to provide a non-standard description of the spectral family $(E_λ)$ and the generalized Gelfand eigenvectors.
We perform the spectral analysis of a family of Jacobi operators $J(α)$ depending on a complex parameter $α$. If $|α|\neq1$ the spectrum of $J(α)$ is discrete and formulas for eigenvalues and eigenvectors are established in terms of elliptic integrals and Jacobian elliptic functions. If $|α|=1$, $α\neq \pm 1$, the essential spectrum of $J(α)$ covers the entire complex plane. In addition, a formula for the Weyl $m$-function as well as the asymptotic expansions of solutions of the difference equation corresponding to $J(α)$ are obtained. Finally, the completeness of eigenvectors and Rodriguez-li…
Using an abstract notion of semiclassical quantization for self-adjoint operators, we prove that the joint spectrum of a collection of commuting semiclassical self-adjoint operators converges to the classical spectrum given by the joint image of the principal symbols, in the semiclassical limit. This includes Berezin-Toeplitz quantization and certain cases of $\hbar$-pseudodifferential quantization, for instance when the symbols are uniformly bounded, and extends a result by L. Polterovich and the authors. In the last part of the paper we review the recent solution to the inverse problem for q…
First-order asymptotic expansions for spectral convergence of compact self-adjoint operators on general spectral subsets, with application to kernel Gram matrices
We consider families of non-self-adjoint perturbations of self-adjoint harmonic and anharmonic oscillators. The norms of spectral projections of these operators are found to grow at intermediate rates from arbitrarily slowly to exponentially rapidly.
We obtain uniform, with respect to t asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues of the operators generated in (0,1) by the Mathieu-Hill equation with a complex-valued potential and by the t-periodic boundary conditions. Then using it we investigate the non-self-adjoint Mathieu-Hill operator H generated in the allreal line by the same equation and establish the necessary and sufficient conditions for the potential for which H has no spectral singularity at infinity and it is an asymptotically spectral operator.
Let $H_0$ and $H$ be self-adjoint operators in a Hilbert space. In the scattering theory framework, we describe the essential spectrum of the difference $φ(H)-φ(H_0)$ for piecewise continuous functions $φ$. This description involves the scattering matrix for the pair $H$, $H_0$.
This text is a slightly expanded version of my 6 hour mini-course at the PDE-meeting in Évian-les-Bains in June 2009. The first part gives some old and recent results on non-self-adjoint differential operators. The second part is devoted to recent results about Weyl distribution of eigenvalues of elliptic operators with small random perturbations.
The inverse problem of spectral analysis for the non-self-adjoint matrix Sturm-Liouville operator on a finite interval is investigated. We study properties of the spectral characteristics for the considered operator, and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the inverse problem. Our approach is based on the constructive solution of the inverse problem by the method of spectral mappings. The characterization of the spectral data in the self-adjoint case is derived as a corollary of the main result.
We investigate the spectrum of a typical non-self-adjoint differential operator $AD=-d^2/dx^2\otimes A$ acting on $\Lp(0,1)\otimes \mathbb{C}^2$, where $A$ is a $2\times 2$ constant matrix. We impose Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in the first and second coordinate respectively at both ends of $[0,1]\subset\mathbb{R}$. For $A\in \mathbb{R}^{2\times 2}$ we explore in detail the connection between the entries of $A$ and the spectrum of $AD$, we find necessary conditions to ensure similarity to a self-adjoint operator and give numerical evidence that suggests a non-trivial spectral evo…
The paper pursues three objectives. Firstly, we provide an expanded version of spectral analysis of self-adjoint Toeplitz operators, initially built by M. Rosenblum in the 1960's. We offer some improvements to Rosenblum's approach: for instance, our proof of the absolute continuity, relying on a weak version of the limiting absorption principle, is more direct. Secondly, we study in detail Toeplitz operators with finite spectral multiplicity. In particular, we introduce generalized eigenfunctions and investigate their properties. Thirdly, we develop a more detailed spectral analysis for piecew…
We demonstrate that a quantum graph exhibits a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry provided the coefficients in the condition describing the wave function matching at the vertices are circulant matrices; this symmetry is nontrivial if they are not invariant with respect to transposition. We also illustrate how the transport properties of such graphs are significantly influenced by the presence or absence of the non-Robin component of the coupling.
