For a given self-adjoint operator $A$ with discrete spectrum, we completely characterize possible eigenvalues of its rank-one perturbations~$B$ and discuss the inverse problem of reconstructing $B$ from its spectrum.
We consider the non-self-adjoint Sturm-Liouville operator on a finite interval. The inverse spectral problem is studied, which consists in recovering this operator from its eigenvalues and generalized weight numbers. We prove local solvability and stability of this inverse problem, relying on the method of spectral mappings. Possible splitting of multiple eigenvalues is taken into account.
The inverse problem of spectral analysis for the non-self-adjoint matrix Sturm-Liouville operator on a finite interval is investigated. We study properties of the spectral characteristics for the considered operator, and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the inverse problem. Our approach is based on the constructive solution of the inverse problem by the method of spectral mappings. The characterization of the spectral data in the self-adjoint case is derived as a corollary of the main result.
We consider a pencil of non-self-adjoint matrix Sturm-Liouville operators on the half line and study the inverse problem of constructing this pencil by its Weyl matrix. A uniqueness theorem is proved, and a constructive algorithm for the solution is obtained.
We characterize possible spectra of rank-one perturbations B of a self-adjoint operator A with discrete spectrum and, in particular, prove that the spectrum of B may include any number of real or non-real eigenvalues of arbitrary algebraic multiplicity
The matrix Sturm-Liouville operator on a finite interval with the boundary conditions in the general self-adjoint form and with the singular potential from the class $W_2^{-1}$ is studied. This operator generalizes Sturm-Liouville operators on geometrical graphs. We investigate structural and asymptotical properties of the spectral data (eigenvalues and weight matrices) of this operator. Furthermore, we prove the uniqueness of recovering the operator from its spectral data, by using the method of spectral mappings.
This paper deals with the inverse spectral problem for a non-self-adjoint Sturm-Liouville operator with discontinuous conditions inside the interval. We obtain that if the potential $q$ is known a priori on a subinterval $ \left[ b,π\right] $ with $b\in \left( d,π\right] $ or $b=d$, then $h,$ $β,$ $γ\ $and $q$ on $\left[ 0,π\right] \ $can be uniquely determined by partial spectral data consisting of a sequence of eigenvalues and a subsequence of the corresponding generalized normalizing constants or a subsequence of the pairs of eigenvalues and the corresponding generalized ratios. For the cas…
Discrete Dirac type self-adjoint system is equivalent to the block Szegö recurrence. Representation of the fundamental solution is obtained, inverse problems on the interval and semi-axis are solved. A Borg-Marchenko type result is obtained too. Connections with the block Toeplitz matrices are treated.
We consider the self-adjoint Dirac operators on a finite interval with summable matrix-valued potentials and general boundary conditions. For such operators, we study the inverse problem of reconstructing the potential and the boundary conditions of the operator from its eigenvalues and suitably defined norming matrices.
An inverse spectral problem for the Sturm-Liouville operator with a singular potential from the class $W_2^{-1}$ is solved by the method of spectral mappings. We prove the uniqueness theorem, develop a constructive algorithm for solution, and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions of solvability for the inverse problem in the self-adjoint and the non-self-adjoint cases
New formulas on the inverse problem for the continuous skew-self-adjoint Dirac type system are obtained. For the discrete skew-self-adjoint Dirac type system the solution of a general type inverse spectral problem is also derived in terms of the Weyl functions. The description of the Weyl functions on the interval is given. Borg-Marchenko type uniqueness theorems are derived for both discrete and continuous non-self-adjoint systems too.
For a sequence $\{α_n\}_{n=0}^\infty$, we consider the Hankel operator $Γ_α$, realised as the infinite matrix in $\ell^2$ with the entries $α_{n+m}$. We consider the subclass of such Hankel operators defined by the "double positivity" condition $Γ_α\geq0$, $Γ_{S^*α}\geq0$; here $S^*α$ is the shifted sequence $\{α_{n+1}\}_{n=0}^\infty$. We prove that in this class, the sequence $α$ is uniquely determined by the spectral shift function $ξ_α$ for the pair $Γ_α^2$, $Γ_{S^*α}^2$. We also describe the class of all functions $ξ_α$ arising in this way and prove that the map $α\mapstoξ_α$ is a homeomor…
Inverse problem to recover the skew-self-adjoint Dirac-type system from the generalized Weyl matrix function is treated in the paper. Sufficient conditions under which the unique solution of the inverse problem exists, are formulated in terms of the Weyl function and a procedure to solve the inverse problem is given. The case of the generalized Weyl functions of the form $ϕ(λ)\exp\{-2iλD\}$, where $ϕ$ is a strictly proper rational matrix function and $D=D^* \geq 0$ is a diagonal matrix, is treated in greater detail. Explicit formulas for the inversion of the corresponding semiseparable integra…
The matrix Sturm-Liouville operator with an integrable potential on the half-line is considered. We study the inverse spectral problem, which consists in recovering of this operator by the Weyl matrix. The main result of the paper is the necessary and sufficient conditions on the Weyl matrix of the non-self-adjoint matrix Sturm-Liouville operator. We also investigate the self-adjoint case and obtain the characterization of the spectral data as a corollary of our general result.
The inverse problem for the differential operator pencil with complex periodic potential and discontinuous coefficients on the axis is studied. Main characteristics of the fundamental solutions are investigated, the spectrum of the operator is studied. We give formulation of the inverse problem, prove a uniqueness theorem and provide a constructive procedure for the solution of the inverse problem
We develop direct and inverse spectral analysis for finite and semi-infinite non-self-adjoint Jacobi matrices with a rank one imaginary part. It is shown that given a set of $n$ not necessarily distinct non-real numbers in the open upper (lower) half-plane uniquely determines a n x n Jacobi matrix with a rank one imaginary part having those numbers as its eigenvalues counting multiplicity. An algorithm for reconstruction for such finite Jacobi matrices is presented. A new model complementing the well known Livsic triangular model for bounded linear operators with rank one imaginary part is obt…
A non-classical Weyl theory is developed for skew-self-adjoint Dirac systems with rectangular matrix potentials. The notion of the Weyl function is introduced and direct and inverse problems are solved. A Borg-Marchenko type uniqueness result and the evolution of the Weyl function for the corresponding focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation are also derived.
We use recent results on the boundary behavior of Cauchy integrals to study the Krein spectral shift of a rank one perturbation problem for self-adjoint operators. As an application, we prove that all self-adjoint rank one perturbations of a self-adjoint operator are pure point if and only if the spectrum of the operator is countable. We also study pairs of pure point operators unitarily equivalent up to a rank one perturbation and give various examples of rank one perturbations of singular spectra.
A procedure to recover explicitly self-adjoint matrix Dirac systems on semi-axis (with both discrete and continuous components of spectrum) from rational Weyl functions is considered. Its stability is proved. GBDT version of Baecklund-Darboux transformation and various important results on Riccati equations are used for this purpose.
Sufficient and necessary conditions on the spectral measure of a self-adjoint operator $A$, acting in a Hilbert space, are obtained, under which for any continuous scalar function the operator function $ϕ(A+γB)$ is holomorphic with rspect to the coupling constant $γ$ in a neighborhood of $γ=0$, where $B$ is a self-adjoint operator. The sharpest results are obtained in the case where $B$ is a rank-one operator.
We consider discrete self-adjoint Dirac systems determined by the potentials (sequences) $\{C_k\}$ such that the matrices $C_k$ are positive definite and $j$-unitary, where $j$ is a diagonal $m\times m$ matrix and has $m_1$ entries $1$ and $m_2$ entries $-1$ ($m_1+m_2=m$) on the main diagonal. We construct systems with rational Weyl functions and explicitly solve inverse problem to recover systems from the contractive rational Weyl functions. Moreover, we study the stability of this procedure. The matrices $C_k$ (in the potentials) are so called Halmos extensions of the Verblunsky-type coeffic…
The purpose of this paper is to study spectral properties of non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators $-Δ-\frac{(n-2)^2}{4|x|^{2}}+V$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with complex-valued potentials $V\in L^{p,\infty}$, $p>n/2$. We prove Keller type inequalities which measure the radius of a disc containing the discrete spectrum, in terms of the $L^{p,\infty}$ norm of $V$. Similar inequalities also hold if the inverse-square potential is replaced by a large class of subcritical potentials with critical singularities at the origin. The main new ingredient in the proof is the uniform Sobolev inequality of Kenig-R…
In this paper we investigate the one-dimensional Schrodinger operator L(q) with complex-valued periodic potential q when q\inL_{1}[0,1] and q_{n}=0 for n=0,-1,-2,..., where q_{n} are the Fourier coefficients of q with respect to the system {e^{i2πnx}}. We prove that the Bloch eigenvalues are (2πn+t)^{2} for n\inZ, t\inC and find explicit formulas for the Bloch functions. Then we consider the inverse problem for this operator.
We consider Dirac, Pauli and Schrödinger quantum magnetic Hamiltonians of full rank in ${\rm L}^2 \big(\mathbb{R}^{2d} \big)$, $d \ge 1$, perturbed by non-self-adjoint (matrix-valued) potentials. On the one hand, we show the existence of non-self-adjoint perturbations, generating near each point of the essential spectrum of the operators, infinitely many (complex) eigenvalues. In particular, we establish point spectrum analogous of Bögli results [Bög17] obtained for non-magnetic Laplacians, and hence showing that classical Lieb-Thirring inequalities cannot hold for our magnetic models. On the …
An inverse spectral problem is studied for the matrix Sturm-Liouville operator on a finite interval with the general self-adjoint boundary condition. We obtain a constructive solution based on the method of spectral mappings for the considered inverse problem. The nonlinear inverse problem is reduced to a linear equation in a special Banach space of infinite matrix sequences. In addition, we apply our results to the Sturm-Liouville operator on a star-shaped graph.
The inverse spectral problem is studied for the Sturm-Liouville operator with a complex-valued potential and arbitrary entire functions in one of the boundary conditions. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for uniqueness, and develop a constructive algorithm for the inverse problem solution. The main results are applied to the Hochstadt-Lieberman half-inverse problem. As an auxiliary proposition, we prove local solvability and stability for the inverse Sturm-Liouville problem by the Cauchy data in the non-self-adjoint case.
We use Rokhlin's Theorem on the uniqueness of canonical systems to find a new way to establish connections between Function Theory in the unit disk and rank one perturbations of self-adjoint or unitary operators. In the n-dimensional case, we prove that for any cyclic self-adjoint operator $A$, operator $A_λ= A + Σ_{k=1}^n λ_k(\cdot,ϕ_k)ϕ_k$ is pure point for a. e. $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,...,λ_n) \in\Bbb R^n$ iff operator $A_η=A+η(\cdot,ϕ_k)ϕ_k$ is pure point for a.e.\ $η\in\Bbb R$ for $k=1,2,...,n$. We also show that if $A_λ$ is pure point for a.e.\ $λ\in \Bbb R^n$ then $A_λ$ is pure point for a.e.\ $λ\…
We survey the relationships of rank one self-adjoint and unitary perturbations as well as finite rank unitary perturbations with various branches of analysis and mathematical physics. We include the case of non-inner characteristic operator functions. For rank one perturbations and non-inner characteristic functions, we prove a representation formula for the adjoint of the Clark operator. Throughout we mention many open problems at varying levels of difficulty.
We consider an off-diagonal self-adjoint finite rank perturbation of a self-adjoint operator in a complex separable Hilbert space $\mathfrak{H}_0 \oplus \mathfrak{H}_1$, where $\mathfrak{H}_1$ is finite dimensional. We describe the singular spectrum of the perturbed operator and establish a connection with solutions to the operator Riccati equation. In particular, we prove existence results for solutions in the case where the whole Hilbert space is finite dimensional.
We study positivity, localization of binding and essential self-adjointness properties of a class of Schroedinger operators with many anisotropic inverse square singularities, including the case of multiple dipole potentials.
Given an infinite graph $G$ on countably many vertices, and a closed, infinite set $Λ$ of real numbers, we prove the existence of an unbounded self-adjoint operator whose graph is $G$ and whose spectrum is $Λ$.
This survey focuses on two main types of finite-rank perturbations: self-adjoint and unitary. We describe both classical and more recent spectral results. We pay special attention to singular self-adjoint perturbations and model representations of unitary perturbations.
Matrix-valued measures provide a natural language for the theory of finite rank perturbations. In this paper we use this language to prove some new perturbation theoretic results. Our main result is a generalization of the Aronszajn--Donoghue theorem about the mutual singularity of the singular parts of the spectrum for rank one perturbations to the case of finite rank perturbations. Simple direct sum type examples indicate that an exact generalization is not possible. However, in this paper we introduce the notion of \emph{vector mutual singularity} for the matrix-valued measures and show tha…
Positivity, essential self-adjointness, and spectral properties of a class of Schroedinger operators with multipolar inverse-square potentials are discussed. In particular a necessary and sufficient condition on the masses of singularities for the existence of at least a configuration of poles ensuring the positivity of the associated quadratic form is established.
For self-adjoint Hankel operators of finite rank, we find an explicit formula for the total multiplicity of their negative and positive spectra. We also show that very strong perturbations, for example, a perturbation by the Carleman operator, do not change the total number of negative eigenvalues of finite rank Hankel operators.
We consider the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation $-f''+q_αf = Ef$ on the positive half-axis with the potential $q_α(r)=(α-1/4)r^{-2}$. It is known that the value $α=0$ plays a special role in this problem: all self-adjoint realizations of the formal differential expression $-\partial^2_r + q_α(r)$ for the Hamiltonian have infinitely many eigenvalues for $α<0$ and at most one eigenvalue for $α\geq 0$. We find a parametrization of self-adjoint boundary conditions and eigenfunction expansions that is analytic in $α$ and, in particular, is not singular at $α= 0$. Employing suitable singular Ti…
Self-adjoint Dirac systems and subclasses of canonical systems, which generalize Dirac systems are studied. Explicit and global solutions of direct and inverse problems are obtained. A local Borg-Marchenko-type theorem, integral representation of the Weyl function, and results on interpolation of Weyl functions are also derived.
Finite rank perturbations of a semi-bounded self-adjoint operator A are studied in the scale of Hilbert spaces associated with A. A concept of quasi-boundary value space is used to describe self-adjoint operator realizations of regular and singular perturbations of A by the same formula. As an application the one-dimensional Schrödinger operator with generalized zero-range potential is considered in the Sobolev space W^p_2(\mathbb{R}), p\in\mathbb{N}.
We study the eigenvalues of the non-self adjoint problem $-y^{\prime\prime}+V(x)y=E y$ on the half-line $0\leq x<+\infty$ under the Robin boundary condition at $x=0$, where $V$ is a monic polynomial of degree $\geq 3$. We obtain a Bohr-Sommerfeld-like asymptotic formula for $E_n$ that depends on the boundary conditions. Consequently, we solve certain inverse spectral problems, recovering the potential $V$ and boundary condition from the first $(m+2)$ terms of the asymptotic formula.
Following [D,BDG,DR], I describe several exactly solvable families of closed operators. Some of these families are defined by the theory of singular rank one perturbations. The remaining families are Schrodinger operators with inverse square potentials and various boundary conditions. I describe a close relationship between these families. In all of them one can observe interesting renormalization group flows (action of the group of dilations).
Using an abstract notion of semiclassical quantization for self-adjoint operators, we prove that the joint spectrum of a collection of commuting semiclassical self-adjoint operators converges to the classical spectrum given by the joint image of the principal symbols, in the semiclassical limit. This includes Berezin-Toeplitz quantization and certain cases of $\hbar$-pseudodifferential quantization, for instance when the symbols are uniformly bounded, and extends a result by L. Polterovich and the authors. In the last part of the paper we review the recent solution to the inverse problem for q…
For integers $m\geq 3$, we study the non-self-adjoint eigenvalue problems $-u^{\prime\prime}(x)+(x^m+P(x))u(x)=E u(x)$, $0\leq x<+\infty$, with the boundary conditions $u(+\infty)=0$ and $αu(0)+βu^{\prime}(0)=0$ for some $α, β\in\C$ with $|α|+|β|\not=0$, where $P(x)=a_1 x^{m-1}+a_2 x^{m-2}+...+a_{m-1} x$ is a polynomial. We provide asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalue counting function and the eigenvalues $E_{n}$. Then we apply these to the inverse spectral problem, reconstructing some coefficients of polynomial potentials from asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalues.
