Matrix-valued measures provide a natural language for the theory of finite rank perturbations. In this paper we use this language to prove some new perturbation theoretic results.
Our main result is a generalization of the Aronszajn--Donoghue theorem about the mutual singularity of the singular parts of the spectrum for rank one perturbations to the case of finite rank perturbations. Simple direct sum type examples indicate that an exact generalization is not possible. However, in this paper we introduce the notion of \emph{vector mutual singularity} for the matrix-valued measures and show that if we use this notion, the mutual singularity still holds for the finite rank perturbations.
As for the scalar spectral measures and the classical mutual singularity, we show that the singular parts are mutually singular for almost all perturbations. One of the ways to prove that is to use a generalization of the Aleksandrov's spectral averaging to the matrix-valued measures, which is also one of the main results of this paper.
Finally, the spectral representation of the perturbed operator is obtained. The matrix Muckenhoupt $A_2$ condition appears naturally there, and it plays an important role in establishing the vector mutual singularity of the spectral measures.
We investigate the behaviour of the eigenvalues of two-dimensional Pauli operators with nonconstant magnetic fields perturbed by a sign-indefinite decaying electric potential V. We prove new eigenvalues asymptotics.
This paper considers $N\times N$ matrices of the form $A_γ=A+ γB$, where $A$ is self-adjoint, $γ\in C$ and $B$ is a non-self-adjoint perturbation of $A$. We obtain some monodromy-type results relating the spectral behaviour of such matrices in the two asymptotic regimes $|γ|\to\infty$ and $|γ|\to 0$ under certain assumptions on $B$. We also explain some properties of the spectrum of $A_γ$ for intermediate sized $γ$ by considering the limit $N\to\infty$, concentrating on properties that have no self-adjoint analogue. A substantial number of the results extend to operators on infinite-dimensiona…
We study the behavior of the limit of the spectrum of a non self-adjoint Sturm-Liouville operator with analytic potential as the semi-classical parameter $h\to 0$. We get a good description of the spectrum and limit spectrum near $\infty$. We also study the action of one special perturbation of the operator (adding a Heaviside function), and prove that the limit spectrum is very unstable. As an illustration we describe the limit spectrum as $h\to 0$ for $P^h=-h^2Δ+i x^2$ and the effect of this perturbation.
For a given self-adjoint operator $A$ with discrete spectrum, we completely characterize possible eigenvalues of its rank-one perturbations~$B$ and discuss the inverse problem of reconstructing $B$ from its spectrum.
We characterize possible spectra of rank-one perturbations B of a self-adjoint operator A with discrete spectrum and, in particular, prove that the spectrum of B may include any number of real or non-real eigenvalues of arbitrary algebraic multiplicity
This survey focuses on two main types of finite-rank perturbations: self-adjoint and unitary. We describe both classical and more recent spectral results. We pay special attention to singular self-adjoint perturbations and model representations of unitary perturbations.
Let $H := H_{0} + V$ and $H_{\perp} := H_{0,\perp} + V$ be respectively perturbations of the free Schrödinger operators $H_{0}$ on $L^{2}\big(\mathbb{R}^{2d+1}\big)$ and $H_{0,\perp}$ on $L^{2}\big(\mathbb{R}^{2d}\big)$, $d \geq 1$ with constant magnetic field of strength $b>0$, and $V$ is a complex relatively compact perturbation. We prove Lieb-Thirring type inequalities for the discrete spectrum of $H$ and $H_{\perp}$. In particular, these estimates give $a\, priori$ information on the distribution of the discrete eigenvalues around the Landau levels of the operator, and describe how fast se…
We consider Dirac, Pauli and Schrödinger quantum magnetic Hamiltonians of full rank in ${\rm L}^2 \big(\mathbb{R}^{2d} \big)$, $d \ge 1$, perturbed by non-self-adjoint (matrix-valued) potentials. On the one hand, we show the existence of non-self-adjoint perturbations, generating near each point of the essential spectrum of the operators, infinitely many (complex) eigenvalues. In particular, we establish point spectrum analogous of Bögli results [Bög17] obtained for non-magnetic Laplacians, and hence showing that classical Lieb-Thirring inequalities cannot hold for our magnetic models. On the …
In this paper we study properties of functions of triples of not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators. The main result of the paper shows that unlike in the case of functions of pairs of self-adjoint operators there is no Lipschitz type estimates in the trace norm for arbitrary functions in the Besov class $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^3)$.
Assume that $T$ is a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and that the spectrum of $T$ is confined in the union $\bigcup_{j\in J}Δ_j$, $J\subseteq\mathbb{Z}$, of segments $Δ_j=[α_j, β_j]\subset\mathbb{R}$ such that $α_{j+1}>β_j$ and $$ \inf_{j} \left(α_{j+1}-β_j\right) = d > 0. $$ If $B$ is a bounded (in general non-self-adjoint) perturbation of $T$ with $\|B\|=:b<d/2$ then the spectrum of the perturbed operator $A=T+B$ lies in the union $\bigcup_{j\in J} U_{b}(Δ_j)$ of the mutually disjoint closed $b$-neighborhoods $U_{b}(Δ_j)$ of the segments $Δ_j$ in $\mathbb{C}$. Let $Q_j…
In this work we extend a previous work about the Weyl asymptotics of the distribution of eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint differential operators with small multiplicative random perturbations, by treating the case of operators on compact manifolds
Let $A$ be a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space $\fH$. Assume that the spectrum of $A$ consists of two disjoint components $σ_0$ and $σ_1$. Let $V$ be a bounded operator on $\fH$, off-diagonal and $J$-self-adjoint with respect to the orthogonal decomposition $\fH=\fH_0\oplus\fH_1$ where $\fH_0$ and $\fH_1$ are the spectral subspaces of $A$ associated with the spectral sets $σ_0$ and $σ_1$, respectively. We find (optimal) conditions on $V$ guaranteeing that the perturbed operator $L=A+V$ is similar to a self-adjoint operator. Moreover, we prove a number of (sharp) norm bounds on variation…
In this work we continue the study of the Weyl asymptotics of the distribution of eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint (pseudo)differential operators with small random perturbations, by treating the case of multiplicative perturbations in arbitrary dimension. We were led to quite essential improvements of many of the probabilistic aspects.
Finite rank perturbations of a semi-bounded self-adjoint operator A are studied in the scale of Hilbert spaces associated with A. A concept of quasi-boundary value space is used to describe self-adjoint operator realizations of regular and singular perturbations of A by the same formula. As an application the one-dimensional Schrödinger operator with generalized zero-range potential is considered in the Sobolev space W^p_2(\mathbb{R}), p\in\mathbb{N}.
We survey the relationships of rank one self-adjoint and unitary perturbations as well as finite rank unitary perturbations with various branches of analysis and mathematical physics. We include the case of non-inner characteristic operator functions. For rank one perturbations and non-inner characteristic functions, we prove a representation formula for the adjoint of the Clark operator. Throughout we mention many open problems at varying levels of difficulty.
We study the trace class perturbations of the half-line, discrete Laplacian and obtain a new bound for the perturbation determinant of the corresponding non-self-adjoint Jacobi operator. Based on this bound, we obtain the Lieb--Thirring inequalities for such operators. The spectral enclosure for the discrete spectrum and embedded eigenvalues are also discussed.
We investigate the effect of non-symmetric relatively bounded perturbations on the spectrum of self-adjoint operators. In particular, we establish stability theorems for one or infinitely many spectral gaps along with corresponding resolvent estimates. These results extend, and improve, classical perturbation results by Kato and by Gohberg/Krein. Further, we study essential spectral gaps and perturbations exhibiting additional structure with respect to the unperturbed operator; in the latter case, we can even allow for perturbations with relative bound $\ge 1$. The generality of our results is…
In this paper we develop certain aspects of perturbation theory for self-adjoint operators subject to small variations of their domains. We use the abstract theory of boundary triplets to quantify such perturbations and give the second order asymptotic analysis for resolvents, spectral projections, discrete eigenvalues of the corresponding self-adjoint operators. In particular, we derive explicit formulas for the first variation and the Hessian of the eigenvalue curves bifurcating from a discrete eigenvalue of an unperturbed operator. An application is given to a matrix valued Robin Laplacian …
We develop direct and inverse spectral analysis for finite and semi-infinite non-self-adjoint Jacobi matrices with a rank one imaginary part. It is shown that given a set of $n$ not necessarily distinct non-real numbers in the open upper (lower) half-plane uniquely determines a n x n Jacobi matrix with a rank one imaginary part having those numbers as its eigenvalues counting multiplicity. An algorithm for reconstruction for such finite Jacobi matrices is presented. A new model complementing the well known Livsic triangular model for bounded linear operators with rank one imaginary part is obt…
We use recent results on the boundary behavior of Cauchy integrals to study the Krein spectral shift of a rank one perturbation problem for self-adjoint operators. As an application, we prove that all self-adjoint rank one perturbations of a self-adjoint operator are pure point if and only if the spectrum of the operator is countable. We also study pairs of pure point operators unitarily equivalent up to a rank one perturbation and give various examples of rank one perturbations of singular spectra.
This paper focuses on the stability of self-adjointness of linear relations under perturbations in Hilbert spaces. It is shown that a self-adjoint relation is still self-adjoint under bounded and relatively bounded perturbations. The results obtained in the present paper generalize the corresponding results for linear operators to linear relations, and some weaken the conditions of the related existing results.
We give a self-contained presentation of the theory of self-adjoint extensions using the technique of boundary triples. A description of the spectra of self-adjoint extensions in terms of the corresponding Krein maps (Weyl functions) is given. Applications include quantum graphs, point interactions, hybrid spaces, singular perturbations.
We establish a limiting absorption principle for some long range perturbations of the Dirac systems at threshold energies. We cover multi-center interactions with small coupling constants. The analysis is reduced to study a family of non-self-adjoint operators. The technique is based on a positive commutator theory for non self-adjoint operators, which we develop in appendix. We also discuss some applications to the dispersive Helmholzt model in the quantum regime.
In this work we consider PT-symmetric perturbations of a self-adjoint semi-classical Schrödinger operator on the real axis in the case of a simple potential well. We assume that the potential is analytic and show that the eigenvalues remain real under the perturbation.
For a pair $(A,B)$ of not necessarily bounded and not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators and for a function $f$ on the Euclidean space ${\Bbb R}^2$ that belongs to the inhomogeneous Besov class $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^2)$, we define the function $f(A,B)$ of these operators as a densely defined operator. We consider the problem of estimating the functions $f(A,B)$ under perturbations of the pair $(A,B)$. It is established that if $1\le p\le2$, and $(A_1,B_1)$ and $(A_2,B_2)$ are pairs of not necessarily bounded and not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators such that the operat…
We study the trace class perturbations of the whole-line, discrete Laplacian and obtain a new bound for the perturbation determinant of the corresponding non-self-adjoint Jacobi operator. Based on this bound, we refine the Lieb--Thirring inequality due to Hansmann--Katriel. The spectral enclosure for such operators is also discussed.
For a purely imaginary sign-definite perturbation of a self-adjoint operator, we obtain exponential representations for the perturbation determinant in both upper and lower half-planes and derive respective trace formulas.
In this paper we study properties of functions of triples of not necessarily commuting self-adjoint operators. The main result of the paper shows that unlike in the case of functions of pairs of self-adjoint operators there is no Lipschitz type estimates in any Schatten--von Neumann norm $\boldsymbol S_p$, $1\le p\le\infty$, for arbitrary functions in the Besov class $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^3)$. In other words, we prove that for $p\in[1,\infty]$, there is no constant $K>0$ such that the inequality \begin{align*} \|f(A_1,B_1,C_1)&-f(A_2,B_2,C_2)\|_{\boldsymbol S_p}\\[.1cm] &\le K\|f\|_{B_{\inf…
We study various spectral theoretic aspects of non-self-adjoint operators. Specifically, we consider a class of factorable non-self-adjoint perturbations of a given unperturbed non-self-adjoint operator and provide an in-depth study of a variant of the Birman-Schwinger principle as well as local and global Weinstein-Aronszajn formulas. Our applications include a study of suitably symmetrized (modified) perturbation determinants of Schrödinger operators in dimensions n=1,2,3 and their connection with Krein's spectral shift function in two- and three-dimensional scattering theory. Moreover, we s…
We give a sufficient condition for the essential self-adjointness of a perturbation of the square of the magnetic Laplacian on an infinite weighted graph. The main result is applicable to graphs whose degree function is not necessarily bounded. The result allows perturbations that are not necessarily bounded from below by a constant.
We use the boundary triplet approach to extend the classical concept of perturbation determinants to a more general setup. In particular, we examine the concept of perturbation determinants to pairs of proper extensions of closed symmetric operators. For an ordered pair of extensions we express the perturbation determinant in terms of the abstract Weyl function and the corresponding boundary operators. A crucial role in our approach plays so-called almost solvable extensions. We obtain trace formulas for pairs of self-adjoint, dissipative and other pairs of extensions and express the spectral …
We discuss the problem of perturbation of spectral subspaces for linear self-adjoint operators on a separable Hilbert space. Let $A$ and $V$ be bounded self-adjoint operators. Assume that the spectrum of $A$ consists of two disjoint parts $σ$ and $Σ$ such that $d=\text{dist}(σ, Σ)>0$. We show that the norm of the difference of the spectral projections $\EE_A(σ)$ and $\EE_{A+V}\big (\{λ| \dist(λ, σ)$ $<d/2\}\big)$ for $A$ and $A+V$ is less then one whenever either (i) $\|V\|<\frac{2}{2+π}d$ or (ii) $\|V\|<{1/2}d$ and certain assumptions on the mutual disposition of the sets $σ$ and $Σ$ are sati…
Given a self-adjoint involution J on a Hilbert space H, we consider a J-self-adjoint operator L=A+V on H where A is a possibly unbounded self-adjoint operator commuting with J and V a bounded J-self-adjoint operator anti-commuting with J. We establish optimal estimates on the position of the spectrum of L with respect to the spectrum of A and we obtain norm bounds on the operator angles between maximal uniformly definite reducing subspaces of the unperturbed operator A and the perturbed operator L. All the bounds are given in terms of the norm of V and the distances between pairs of disjoint s…
We provide quantitative inductive estimates for Green's functions of matrices with (sub)expoentially decaying off diagonal entries in higher dimensions. Together with Cartan's estimates and discrepancy estimates, we establish explicit bounds for the large deviation theorem for non-self-adjoint Toeplitz operators. As applications, we obtain the modulus of continuity of the integrated density of states with explicit bounds and the pure point spectrum property for analytic quasi-periodic operators. Moreover, our inductions are self-improved and work for perturbations with low complexity interacti…
We improve known perturbation results for self-adjoint operators in Hilbert spaces and prove spectral enclosures for diagonally dominant $J$-self-adjoint operator matrices. These are used in the proof of the central result, a perturbation theorem for $J$-non-negative operators. The results are applied to singular indefinite Sturm-Liouville operators with $L^p$-potentials. Known bounds on the non-real eigenvalues of such operators are improved.
The present study is the first such attempt to examine rigorously and comprehensively the spectral properties of a three-dimensional ultracold atom when both the spin-orbit interaction and the Zeeman field are taken into account. The model operator is the Rashba spin-orbit coupled operator in dimension three. The self-adjoint extensions are constructed using the theory of singular perturbations, where regularized rank two perturbations describe spin-dependent contact interactions. The spectrum of self-adjoint extensions is investigated in detail laying emphasis on the effects due to spin-orbit…
We consider an off-diagonal self-adjoint finite rank perturbation of a self-adjoint operator in a complex separable Hilbert space $\mathfrak{H}_0 \oplus \mathfrak{H}_1$, where $\mathfrak{H}_1$ is finite dimensional. We describe the singular spectrum of the perturbed operator and establish a connection with solutions to the operator Riccati equation. In particular, we prove existence results for solutions in the case where the whole Hilbert space is finite dimensional.
We give a spectral description of the semi-classical Schrodinger operator with a piecewise linear, complex valued potential. Moreover, using these results, we show how an arbitrarily small bounded perturbation of a non-self-adjoint operator can completely change the spectrum of the operator.
This text is a survey of recent results obtained by the author and collaborators on different problems for non-self-adjoint operators. The topics are: Kramers-Fokker-Planck type operators, spectral asymptotics in two dimensions and Weyl asymptotics for the eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint operators with small random perturbations. In the introduction we also review the notion of pseudo-spectrum and its relation to non-self-adjoint spectral problems.
For any $β>0$, we provide a tridiagonal matrix model and compute the joint eigenvalue density of a random rank one non-Hermitian perturbation of Gaussian and Laguerre $β$-ensembles of random matrices.
We study the spectrum of a periodic self-adjoint operator on the axis perturbed by a small localized nonself-adjoint operator. It is shown that the continuous spectrum is independent of the perturbation, the residual spectrum is empty, and the point spectrum has no finite accumulation points. We address the existence of the embedded eigenvalues. We establish the necessary and sufficient conditions of the existence of the eigenvalues and construct their asymptotics expansions. The asymptotics expansions for the associated eigenfunctions are also obtained. The examples are given.
In this article we consider asymptotics for the spectral function of Schrödinger operators on the real line. Let $P:L^2(\mathbb{R})\to L^2(\mathbb{R})$ have the form $$ P:=-\tfrac{d^2}{dx^2}+W, $$ where $W$ is a self-adjoint first order differential operator with certain modified almost periodic structure. We show that the kernel of the spectral projector, $\mathbb{1}_{(-\infty,λ^2]}(P)$ has a full asymptotic expansion in powers of $λ$. In particular, our class of potentials $W$ is stable under perturbation by formally self-adjoint first order differential operators with smooth, compactly supp…
Sufficient and necessary conditions on the spectral measure of a self-adjoint operator $A$, acting in a Hilbert space, are obtained, under which for any continuous scalar function the operator function $ϕ(A+γB)$ is holomorphic with rspect to the coupling constant $γ$ in a neighborhood of $γ=0$, where $B$ is a self-adjoint operator. The sharpest results are obtained in the case where $B$ is a rank-one operator.
This text is a slightly expanded version of my 6 hour mini-course at the PDE-meeting in Évian-les-Bains in June 2009. The first part gives some old and recent results on non-self-adjoint differential operators. The second part is devoted to recent results about Weyl distribution of eigenvalues of elliptic operators with small random perturbations.
In this paper, we consider elliptic differential operators on compact manifolds with a random perturbation in the 0th order term and show under fairly weak additional assumptions that the large eigenvalues almost surely distribute according to the Weyl law, well-known in the self-adjoint case.
We study perturbations of a self-adjoint positive operator $T$, provided that a perturbation operator $B$ satisfies "local" subordinate condition $\|Bφ_k\|\leqslant bμ_k^β$ with some $β<1$ and $b>0$. Here $\{φ_k\}_{k=1}^\infty$ is an orthonormal system of the eigenvectors of the operator $T$ corresponding to the eigenvalues $\{μ_k\}_{k=1}^\infty$. We introduce the concept of $α$-non-condensing sequence and prove the theorem on the comparison of the eigenvalue-counting functions of the operators $T$ and $T+B$. Namely, it is shown that if $\{μ_k\}$ is $α-$non-condensing then the difference of th…
We obtain general trace formulae in the case of perturbation of self-adjoint operators by self-adjoint operators of class $\bS_m$, where $m$ is a positive integer. In \cite{PSS} a trace formula for operator Taylor polynomials was obtained. This formula includes the Livshits--Krein trace formula in the case $m=1$ and the Koplienko trace formula in the case $m=2$. We establish most general trace formulae in the case of perturbation of Schatten--von Neumann class $\bS_m$. We also improve the trace formula obtained in \cite{PSS} for operator Taylor polynomials and prove it for arbitrary functions …
Let $T$ be a self-adjoint operator in a Hilbert space $H$ with domain $\mathcal D(T)$. Assume that the spectrum of $T$ is confined in the union of disjoint intervals $Δ_k =[α_{2k-1},α_{2k}]$, $k\in \mathbb{Z}$, and $$ α_{2k+1}-α_{2k} \geq b|α_{2k+1}+α_{2k}|^p\quad \text{ for some }\,b>0,\,p\in[0,1). $$ Suppose that a linear operator $B$ in $H$ is $p$-subordinated to $T$, i.e. $\mathcal D(B) \supset\mathcal D(T)$ and $\|Bx\| \leq b'\,\|Tx\|^p\|x\|^{1-p} +M\|x\| \text{\, for all } x\in \mathcal D(T)$, with some $b'>0$ and $M\geq 0$. Then the spectrum of the perturbed operator $A=T+B$ lies in the…
For self-adjoint Hankel operators of finite rank, we find an explicit formula for the total multiplicity of their negative and positive spectra. We also show that very strong perturbations, for example, a perturbation by the Carleman operator, do not change the total number of negative eigenvalues of finite rank Hankel operators.
In this article we prove that for $p>2$, there exist pairs of self-adjoint operators $(A_1,B_1)$ and $(A_2,B_2)$ and a function $f$ on the real line in the homogeneous Besov class $B_{\infty,1}^1({\Bbb R}^2)$ such that the differences $A_2-A_1$ and $B_2-B_1$ belong to the Schatten--von Neumann class $\boldsymbol{S}_p$ but $f(A_2,B_2)-f(A_1,B_1)\not\in\boldsymbol{S}_p$. A similar result holds for functions of contractions. We also obtain an analog of this result in the case of triples of self-adjoint operators for any $p\ge1$
We study stability of spectral types for semi-infinite self-adjoint tridiagonal matrices under random decaying perturbations. We show that absolutely continuous spectrum associated with bounded eigenfunctions is stable under Hilbert-Schmidt random perturbations. We also obtain some results for singular spectral types.
