We give a self-contained presentation of the theory of self-adjoint extensions using the technique of boundary triples. A description of the spectra of self-adjoint extensions in terms of the corresponding Krein maps (Weyl functions) is given. Applications include quantum graphs, point interactions, hybrid spaces, singular perturbations.
Using a parameterisation of general self-adjoint boundary conditions in terms of Lagrange planes we propose a scheme for factorising the matrix Schroedinger operator and hence construct a Darboux transformation an interesting feature of which is that the matrix potential and boundary conditions are altered under the transformation. We present a solution of the inverse problem in the case of general boundary conditions using a Marchenko equation and discusss the specialisation to the case of graph with trivial compact part, ie. diagonal matrix potential.
The Cauchy problem is studied for the self-adjoint and non-self-adjoint Schroedinger equations. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions in the weighted Sobolev spaces. Secondly we prove that if potentials are depending continuously and differentiably on a parameter, so are the solutions, respectively. The non-self-adjoint Schroedinger equations that we study are those used in the theory of continuous quantum measurements. The results on the existence and uniqueness of solutions in the weighted Sobolev spaces will play a crucial role in the proof for the convergence of the Feyn…
We investigate the connections between Weyl-Titchmarsh-Kodaira theory for one-dimensional Schrödinger operators and the theory of $n$-entire operators. As our main result we find a necessary and sufficient condition for a one-dimensional Schrödinger operator to be $n$-entire in terms of square integrability of derivatives (w.r.t. the spectral parameter) of the Weyl solution. We also show that this is equivalent to the Weyl function being in a generalized Herglotz-Nevanlinna class. As an application we show that perturbed Bessel operators are $n$-entire, improving the previously known condition…
Some exactly solvable potentials in the position dependent mass background are generated whose bound states are given in terms of Laguerre- or Jacobi-type $X_1$ exceptional orthogonal polynomials. These potentials are shown to be shape invariant and isospectral to the potentials whose bound state solutions involve classical Laguerre or Jacobi polynomials.
We obtain several essential self-adjointness conditions for a Schroedinger type operator D*D+V acting in sections of a vector bundle over a manifold M. Here V is a locally square-integrable bundle map. Our conditions are expressed in terms of completeness of certain metrics on M; these metrics are naturally associated to the operator. We do not assume a priori that M is endowed with a complete Riemannian metric. This allows us to treat e.g. operators acting on bounded domains in the euclidean space. For the case when the principal symbol of the operator is scalar, we establish more precise res…
A one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with position-dependent effective mass in the kinetic energy operator is studied in the framework of an $so(2,1)$ algebra. New mass-deformed versions of Scarf II, Morse and generalized Pöschl-Teller potentials are obtained. Consistency with an intertwining condition is pointed out.
An exactly solvable position-dependent mass Schrödinger equation in two dimensions, depicting a particle moving in a semi-infinite layer, is re-examined in the light of recent theories describing superintegrable two-dimensional systems with integrals of motion that are quadratic functions of the momenta. To get the energy spectrum a quadratic algebra approach is used together with a realization in terms of deformed parafermionic oscillator operators. In this process, the importance of supplementing algebraic considerations with a proper treatment of boundary conditions for selecting physical w…
We revisit here the analytical continuation approach usually employed to compute quasinormal modes (QNM) and frequencies of a given potential barrier $V$ starting from the bounded states and respective eigenvalues of the Schroedinger operator associated with the potential well corresponding to the inverted potential $-V$. We consider an exactly soluble problem corresponding to a potential barrier of the Poschl-Teller type with a well defined and behaved QNM spectrum, but for which the associated Schroedinger operator $\cal H$ obtained by analytical continuation fails to be self-adjoint. Althou…
A new family of solvable potentials related to the Schroedinger-Riccati equation has been investigated. This one-dimensional potential family depends on parameters and is restricted to the real interval. It is shown that this potential class, which is a rather general class of solvable potentials related to the hypergeometric functions, can be generalized to even wider classes of solvable potentials. As a consequence the nonlinear Schroedinger-type equation has been obtained.
We study the question of magnetic confinement of quantum particles on the unit disk $\ID$ in $\IR^2$, i.e. we wish to achieve confinement solely by means of the growth of the magnetic field $B(\vec x)$ near the boundary of the disk. In the spinless case we show that $B(\vec x)\ge \frac{\sqrt 3}{2}\cdot\frac{1}{(1-r)^2}-\frac{1}{\sqrt 3}\frac{1}{(1-r)^2\ln \frac{1}{1-r}}$, for $|\vec x|$ close to 1, insures the confinement provided we assume that the non-radially symmetric part of the magnetic field is not very singular near the boundary. Both constants $\frac{\sqrt 3}{2}$ and $-\frac{1}{\sqrt …
We introduce a novel approach for defining a $δ'$-interaction on a subset of the real line of Lebesgue measure zero which is based on Sturm-Liouville differential expression with measure coefficients. This enables us to establish basic spectral properties (e.g., self-adjointness, lower semiboundedness and spectral asymptotics) of Hamiltonians with $δ'$-interactions concentrated on sets of complicated structures.
At the lower edge of the energy continuum the birth of an isolated quantum bound state is studied as caused by an infinitesimally small change of the interaction. In our model a single, asymptotically free massive quantum particle is assumed moving along a discretized real line of coordinates, $x \in \mathbb{Z}$. The motion is assumed controlled by a weakly nonlocal 2J-parametric external potential which is non-Hermitian but PT-symmetric. Mathematically, the bound states are then reinterpreted as Sturmians, i.e., the bound-state energy is treated as a variable real parameter while the value of…
We construct six multi-parameter families of Hermitian quasi-exactly solvable matrix Schroedinger operators in one variable. The method for finding these operators relies heavily upon a special representation of the Lie algebra o(2,2) whose representation space contains an invariant finite-dimensional subspace. Besides that we give several examples of quasi-exactly solvable matrix models that have square-integrable eigenfunctions. These examples are in direct analogy with the quasi-exactly solvable scalar Schroedinger operators obtained by Turbiner and Ushveridze.
Within the framework of self-adjoint operator of time in non-relativistic quantum mechanics some properties of solutions of Schroedinger equation, related to Hilbert space formalism, are investigated for two types of time dependent Hamiltonian.
The paper is devoted to operators given formally by the expression \begin{equation*} -\partial_x^2+\big(α-\frac14\big)x^{-2}. \end{equation*} This expression is homogeneous of degree minus 2. However, when we try to realize it as a self-adjoint operator for real $α$, or closed operator for complex $α$, we find that this homogeneity can be broken. This leads to a definition of two holomorphic families of closed operators on $L^2({\mathbb R}_+)$, which we denote $H_{m,κ}$ and $H_0^ν$, with $m^2=α$, $-1<\Re(m)<1$, and where $κ,ν\in{\mathbb C}\cup\{\infty\}$ specify the boundary condition at $0$. …
A comprehensive review of exactly solvable quantum mechanics is presented with the emphasis of the recently discovered multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials. The main subjects to be discussed are the factorised Hamiltonians, the general structure of the solution spaces of the Schroedinger equation (Crum's theorem and its modifications), the shape invariance, the exact solvability in the Schroedinger picture as well as in the Heisenberg picture, the creation/annihilation operators and the dynamical symmetry algebras, coherent states, various deformation schemes (multiple Darboux transformations)…
Based on the well-known relation between Fokker-Planck equations and Schroedinger equations of quantum mechanics (QM), we propose new deformed Fokker-Planck (FP) equations associated with the Schroedinger equations of "discrete" QM. The latter is a natural discretization of QM and its Schroedinger equations are difference instead of differential equations. Exactly solvable FP equations are obtained corresponding to exactly solvable "discrete" QM, whose eigenfunctions include various deformations of the classical orthogonal polynomials.
In this article we show that separation of variables for second-order superintegrable systems in two-dimensional Euclidean space generates both exactly solvable (ES) and quasi-exactly solvable (QES) problems in quantum mechanics. In this article we propose the another definition of ES and QES. The quantum mechanical problem is called ES if the solution of Schroedinger equation, can be expressed in terms of hypergeometrical functions $_mF_n$ and is QES if the Schroedinger equation admit polynomial solutions with the coefficients satisfying the three-term or more higher order of recurrence relat…
The Friedrichs extension for the generalized spiked harmonic oscillator given by the singular differential operator -D^2+ Bx^2 + Ax^{-2} + lambda x^{-alpha} (B>0, A >= 0) in L_2(0, infinity) is studied. We look at two different domains of definition for each of these differential operators in L_2(0, infinity), namely C_0^infinity(0, infinity) and D(T_{2,F})\cap D(M_{lambda, alpha}), where the latter is a subspace of the Sobolev space W_{2,2}(0, infinity). Adjoints of these differential operators on C_0^infinity(0,infinity) exist as result of the null-space properties of functionals. For the ot…
For a densely defined self-adjoint operator $\mathcal{H}$ in Hilbert space $\mathcal{F}$ the operator $\exp(-it\mathcal{H})$ is the evolution operator for the Schrödinger equation $iψ'_t=\mathcal{H}ψ$, i.e. if $ψ(0,x)=ψ_0(x)$ then $ψ(t,x)=(\exp(-it\mathcal{H})ψ_0)(x)$ for $x\in Q.$ The space $\mathcal{F}$ here is the space of wave functions $ψ$ defined on an abstract space $Q$, the configuration space of a quantum system, and $\mathcal{H}$ is the Hamiltonian of the system. In this paper the operator $\exp(-it\mathcal{H})$ for all real values of $t$ is expressed in terms of the family of self-a…

The Laplacian in an unbounded tubular neighbourhood of a hyperplane with non-Hermitian complex-symmetric Robin-type boundary conditions is investigated in the limit when the width of the neighbourhood diminishes. We show that the Laplacian converges in a norm resolvent sense to a self-adjoint Schroedinger operator in the hyperplane whose potential is expressed solely in terms of the boundary coupling function. As a consequence, we are able to explain some peculiar spectral properties of the non-Hermitian Laplacian by known results for Schroedinger operators.
Using adjoint representation of Lie algebras, we calculate the automorphism group and ad-invariant metric on six dimensional solvable real Lie algebras with 5, 4 and 3 dimensional nilradicals.
We demonstrate that any self-adjoint coupling in a quantum graph vertex can be approximated by a family of magnetic Schroedinger operators on a tubular network built over the graph. If such a manifold has a boundary, Neumann conditions are imposed at it. The procedure involves a local change of graph topology in the vicinity of the vertex; the approximation scheme constructed on the graph is subsequently `lifted' to the manifold. For the corresponding operator a norm-resolvent convergence is proved, with the natural identification map, as the tube diameters tend to zero.
Path integral representations for generalized Schrödinger operators obtained under a class of Bernstein functions of the Laplacian are established. The one-to-one correspondence of Bernstein functions with Lévy subordinators is used, thereby the role of Brownian motion entering the standard Feynman-Kac formula is taken here by subordinated Brownian motion. As specific examples, fractional and relativistic Schrödinger operators with magnetic field and spin are covered. Results on self-adjointness of these operators are obtained under conditions allowing for singular magnetic fields and singular…
The Schroedinger operator with point interaction in one dimension has a U(2) family of self-adjoint extensions. We study the spectrum of the operator and show that (i) the spectrum is uniquely determined by the eigenvalues of the matrix U belonging to U(2) that characterizes the extension, and that (ii) the space of distinct spectra is given by the orbifold T^2/Z_2 which is a Moebius strip with boundary. We employ a parametrization of U(2) that admits a direct physical interpretation and furnishes a coherent framework to realize the spectral duality and anholonomy recently found. This allows u…
We prove that a single-jump quantum stochastic unitary evolution is equivalent to a Dirac boundary value problem on the half line in one extra dimension. It is shown that this exactly solvable model can be obtained from a Schroedinger boundary value problem for a positive relativistic Hamiltonian in the half-line as the inductive ultrarelativistic limit, correspondent to the input flow of Dirac particles with asymptotically infinite momenta. Thus the problem of stochastic approximation is reduced to the to the quantum-mechanical boundary value problem in the extra dimension. The question of mi…
By suitably extending a Feynman-Kac formula of Simon [Canadian Math. Soc. Conf. Proc, 28 (2000), 317-321], we study one-parameter semigroups generated by (the negative of) rather general Schroedinger operators, which may be unbounded from below and include a magnetic vector potential. In particular, a common domain of essential self-adjointness for such a semigroup is specified. Moreover, each member of the semigroup is proven to be a maximal Carleman operator with a continuous integral kernel given by a Brownian-bridge expectation. The results are used to show that the spectral projections of…
It is shown that all PDM Schroedinger equations admitting more than five dimensional Lie symmetry algebras (whose completed list can be found in paper~[{\it J.~Math. Phys.} {\bf 58}, , 083508 (2017)] are exactly solvable. The corresponding exact solutions are presented. The supersymmetric aspects of the exactly solvable systems are discussed.
We prove a variant of Krein's resolvent formula expressing the resolvents of self-adjoint extensions through the associated boundary conditions. Applications to solvable quantum-mechanical problems are discussed.
We consider one-dimensional Schroedinger-type operators in a bounded interval with non-self-adjoint Robin-type boundary conditions. It is well known that such operators are generically conjugate to normal operators via a similarity transformation. Motivated by recent interests in quasi-Hermitian Hamiltonians in quantum mechanics, we study properties of the transformations in detail. We show that they can be expressed as the sum of the identity and an integral Hilbert-Schmidt operator. In the case of parity and time reversal boundary conditions, we establish closed integral-type formulae for th…
Here we give brief account of hermitian symplectic spaces, showing that they are intimately connected to symmetric as well as self-adjoint extensions of a symmetric operator. Furthermore we find an explicit parameterisation of the Lagrange Grassmannian in terms of the unitary matrices $\U (n)$. This allows us to explicitly describe all self-adjoint boundary conditions for the Schroedinger operator on the graph in terms of a unitary matrix. We show that the asymptotics of the scattering matrix can be simply expressed in terms of this unitary matrix.
We consider a J-self-adjoint 2x2 block operator matrix L in the Feshbach spectral case, that is, in the case where the spectrum of one main-diagonal entry is embedded into the absolutely continuous spectrum of the other main-diagonal entry. We work with the analytic continuation of one of the Schur complements of L to the unphysical sheets of the spectral parameter plane. We present the conditions under which the continued Schur complement has operator roots, in the sense of Markus-Matsaev. The operator roots reproduce (parts of) the spectrum of the Schur complement, including the resonances. …
We make a new multivariate generalization of the type A monomial space of a single variable. It is different from the previously introduced type A space of several variables which is an sl(M+1) module, and we thus call it type A'. We construct the most general quasi-solvable operator of (at most) second-order which preserves the type A' space. Investigating directly the condition under which the type A' operators can be transformed to Schroedinger operators, we obtain the complete list of the type A' quasi-solvable quantum many-body systems. In particular, we find new quasi-solvable models of …
We make a generalization of the type C monomial space of a single variable, which was introduced in the construction of type C N-fold supersymmetry, to several variables. Then, we construct the most general quasi-solvable second-order operators preserving this multivariate type C space. These operators of several variables are characterized by the fact that two different polynomial type solutions are available. In particular, we investigate and classify all the possible Schroedinger operators realized as a subclass of this family. It turns out that the rational, hyperbolic, and trigonometric C…
We use the boundary triplet approach to extend the classical concept of perturbation determinants to a more general setup. In particular, we examine the concept of perturbation determinants to pairs of proper extensions of closed symmetric operators. For an ordered pair of extensions we express the perturbation determinant in terms of the abstract Weyl function and the corresponding boundary operators. A crucial role in our approach plays so-called almost solvable extensions. We obtain trace formulas for pairs of self-adjoint, dissipative and other pairs of extensions and express the spectral …
We consider boundary conditions at the vertex of a star graph which make Schroedinger operators on the graph self-adjoint, in particular, the two-parameter family of such conditions invariant with respect to permutations of graph edges. It is proved that the corresponding operators can be approximated in the norm-resolvent sense by elements of another Schroedinger operator family on the same graph in which the delta coupling is imposed at the vertex and an additional point interaction is placed at each edge provided the coupling parameters are properly chosen.
We handle all the self-adjoint extensions of the minimal Schroedinger operator for the non-relativistic electron living in the one-dimensional configuration space with a junction. We are interested in every boundary condition corresponding to the individual self-adjoint extension. Thus, we clarify all the types of those boundary conditions of the wave functions of the non-relativistic electron. We find a tunnel-junction formula for the non-relativistic electron passing through the junction. Using this tunnel-junction formula, we propose a mathematical possibility of a tunnel-junction device fo…
This paper is devoted to the construction of what we will call {\em exactly solvable models}, i.e. of quantum mechanical systems described by an Hamiltonian $H$ whose eigenvalues and eigenvectors can be explicitly constructed out of some {\em minimal ingredients}. In particular, motivated by PT-quantum mechanics, we will not insist on any self-adjointness feature of the Hamiltonians considered in our construction. We also introduce the so-called bicoherent states, we analyze some of their properties and we show how they can be used for quantizing a system. Some examples, both in finite and in …
We consider an open domain with a compact boundary in an Euclidean space and a Schroedinger operator with magnetic field on this domain. We give sufficient conditions on the rate of growth of the magnetic field near the boundary which guarantees essential self-adjointness of this operator. From the physical point of view, it means that the quantum particle is confined in the domain by the magnetic field. We construct examples on polytopes and domains with smooth boundaries; these examples of "magnetic bottles" are highly simplified models of what is done for nuclear fusion in tokamacs.
This work deals with the functional model for a class of extensions of symmetric operators and its applications to the theory of wave scattering. In terms of Boris Pavlov's spectral form of this model, we find explicit formulae for the action of the unitary group of exponentials corresponding to almost solvable extensions of a given closed symmetric operator with equal deficiency indices. On the basis of these formulae, we are able to construct wave operators and derive a new representation for the scattering matrix for pairs of such extensions in both self-adjoint and non-self-adjoint situati…
