We study self-adjoint operators defined by factorizing second order differential operators in first order ones. We discuss examples where such factorizations introduce singular interactions into simple quantum mechanical models like the harmonic oscillator or the free particle on the circle. The generalization of these examples to the many-body case yields quantum models of distinguishable and interacting particles in one dimensions which can be solved explicitly and by simple means. Our considerations lead us to a simple method to construct exactly solvable quantum many-body systems of Calogero-Sutherland type.
We introduce an alternative factorization of the Hamiltonian of the quantum harmonic oscillator which leads to a two-parameter self-adjoint operator from which the standard harmonic oscillator, the one-parameter oscillators introduced by Mielnik, and the Hermite operator are obtained in certain limits of the parameters. In addition, a single Bernoulli-type parameter factorization which is different of the one introduced by M. A. Reyes, H. C. Rosu, and M. R. Gutierrez, Phys. Lett. A 375 (2011) 2145 is briefly discussed in the final part of this work
We investigate the eigengenvalues problem for self-adjoint operators with the singular perturbations. The general results presented here includes weakly as well as strongly singular cases. We illustrate these results on two models which correspond to so-called additive strongly singular perturbations.
Starting from Rodrigues formula we present a general construction of raising and lowering operators for orthogonal polynomials of continuous and discrete variable on uniform lattice. In order to have these operators mutually adjoint we introduce orthonormal functions with respect to the scalar product of unit weight. Using the Infeld-Hull factorization method, we generate from the raising and lowering operators the second order self-adjoint differential/difference operator of hypergeometric type.
We develop a general technique for finding self-adjoint extensions of a symmetric operator that respect a given set of its symmetries. Problems of this type naturally arise when considering two- and three-dimensional Schrödinger operators with singular potentials. The approach is based on constructing a unitary transformation diagonalizing the symmetries and reducing the initial operator to the direct integral of a suitable family of partial operators. We prove that symmetry preserving self-adjoint extensions of the initial operator are in a one-to-one correspondence with measurable families o…
This paper addresses an investigation on a factorization method for difference equations. It is proved that some classes of second order linear difference operators, acting in Hilbert spaces, can be factorized using a pair of mutually adjoint first order difference operators. These classes encompass equations of hypergeometic type describing classical orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable.
Physical realizations of non-standard singular self-adjoint extensions for one-dimensional Schrödinger operator in terms of the mass-jump are considered. It is shown that corresponding boundary conditions can be realized for the Hamiltonian with the position-dependent effective mass in two qualitatively different profiles of the effective mass inhomogeneity: the mass-jump and the mass-bump. The existence of quantized magnetic flux in a case of the mass-jump is proven by explicit demonstration of the Zeeman-like splitting for states with the opposite projections of angular momentum.
In this work we construct self-adjoint extensions of the Dirac operator associated to Hermitian matrix potentials with Coulomb decay and prove that the domain is maximal. The result is obtained by means of a Hardy-Dirac type inequality. In particular, we can work with some electromagnetic potentials such that both, the electric potential and the magnetic one, have Coulomb type singularity.
Two different self-adjoint Pauli extensions describing a spin-1/2 two-dimensional quantum system with singular magnetic field are studied. An Aharonov-Casher type formula is proved for the maximal Pauli extension and it is also checked that this extension can be approximated by operators corresponding to more regular magnetic fields.
Finite rank perturbations of a semi-bounded self-adjoint operator A are studied in the scale of Hilbert spaces associated with A. A concept of quasi-boundary value space is used to describe self-adjoint operator realizations of regular and singular perturbations of A by the same formula. As an application the one-dimensional Schrödinger operator with generalized zero-range potential is considered in the Sobolev space W^p_2(\mathbb{R}), p\in\mathbb{N}.
The Kaehler quotient of a complex reductive Lie group relative to the conjugation action carries a complex algebraic stratified Kaehler structure which reflects the geometry of the group. For the group SL(n,C), we interpret the resulting singular Poisson-Kaehler geometry of the quotient in terms of complex discriminant varieties and variants thereof.
In this paper we consider some aspects of tridiagonal, non self-adjoint, Hamiltonians and of their supersymmetric counterparts. In particular, the problem of factorization is discussed, and it is shown how the analysis of the eigenstates of these Hamiltonians produce interesting recursion formulas giving rise to biorthogonal families of vectors. Some examples are proposed, and a connection with bi-squeezed states is analyzed.
In this paper, we develop a factorization method to reconstruct cavities in a heat conductor by knowing the Neumann-to-Dirichlet map at the boundary of this conductor. The factorization method is a very well known reconstruction method for inverse problems described by self-adjoint elliptic equations. It enables us to reconstruct the boundaries of unknown targets such as cavities and inclusions. This method was successfully applied for examples to the inverse scattering problem by obstacles for the acoustic wave and the electrical impedance tomography problem. The forward model equations for t…
We prove a general essential self-adjointness criterion for sub-Laplacians on complete sub-Riemannian manifolds, defined with respect to singular measures. As a consequence, we show that the intrinsic sub-Laplacian (i.e. defined w.r.t. Popp's measure) is essentially self-adjoint on the equiregular connected components of a sub-Riemannian manifold. This result holds under mild regularity assumptions on the singular region, and when the latter does not contain characteristic points.

We consider singular self-adjoint extensions for the Schrödinger operator of spin-$1/2$ particle in one dimension. The corresponding boundary conditions at a singular point are obtained. There are boundary conditions with the spin-flip mechanism, i.e. for these point-like interactions the spin operator does not commute with the Hamiltonian. One of these extensions is the analog of zero-range $δ$-potential. The other one is the analog of so called $δ^{(1)}$-interaction. We show that in physical terms such contact interactions can be identified as the point-like analogues of Rashba Hamiltonian (…
We consider the homogenization of a singularly perturbed self-adjoint fourth order elliptic equation with locally periodic coefficients, stated in a bounded domain. We impose Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary of the domain. The presence of large parameters in the lower order terms and the dependence of the coefficients on the slow variable give rise to the effect of localization of the eigenfunctions. We show that the $j$th eigenfunction can be approximated by a rescaled function that is constructed in terms of the $j$th eigenfunction of fourth or second order order effective opera…
Let $A:D(A)\subseteq\H\to\H$ be an injective self-adjoint operator and let $τ:D(A)\to\X$, X a Banach space, be a surjective linear map such that $\|τϕ\|_\X\le c \|Aϕ\|_\H$. Supposing that \text{\rm Range}$ (τ')\cap\H' =\{0\}$, we define a family $A^τ_Θ$ of self-adjoint operators which are extensions of the symmetric operator $A_{|\{τ=0\}.}$. Any $ϕ$ in the operator domain $D(A^τ_Θ)$ is characterized by a sort of boundary conditions on its univocally defined regular component $\phireg$, which belongs to the completion of D(A) w.r.t. the norm $\|Aϕ\|_\H$. These boundary conditions are written in…
In this work, we review two methods used to approach singular Hamiltonians in (2+1) dimensions. Both methods are based on the self-adjoint extension approach. It is very common to find singular Hamiltonians in quantum mechanics, especially in quantum systems in the presence of topological defects, which are usually modelled by point interactions. In general, it is possible to apply some kind of regularization procedure, as the vanishing of the wave function at the location of the singularity, ensuring that the wave function is square-integrable and then can be associated with a physical state.…
We investigate the connections between Weyl-Titchmarsh-Kodaira theory for one-dimensional Schrödinger operators and the theory of $n$-entire operators. As our main result we find a necessary and sufficient condition for a one-dimensional Schrödinger operator to be $n$-entire in terms of square integrability of derivatives (w.r.t. the spectral parameter) of the Weyl solution. We also show that this is equivalent to the Weyl function being in a generalized Herglotz-Nevanlinna class. As an application we show that perturbed Bessel operators are $n$-entire, improving the previously known condition…
We recall Borcherds's approach to vertex algebras via "singular commutative rings", and introduce new examples of his constructions which we compare to vertex algebras, chiral algebras, and factorization algebras. We show that all vertex algebras (resp. chiral algebras or equivalently factorization algebras) can be realized in these new categories $\text{VA}(A,H,S)$, but we also show that the functors from $\text{VA}(A,H,S)$ to vertex algebras or chiral algebras are not equivalences: a single vertex or chiral algebra may have non-equivalent realizations as an $(A, H,S)$-vertex algebra.
Given a self-adjoint operator $A:D(A)\subseteq\calH\to\calH$ and a continuous linear operator $τ:D(A)\to\X$ with Range$ τ'\cap\calH' ={0}$, $\X$ a Banach space, we explicitly construct a family $A^τ_Θ$ of self-adjoint operators such that any $A^τ_Θ$ coincides with the original $A$ on the kernel of $τ$. Such a family is obtained by giving a Kre\uın-like formula where the role of the deficiency spaces is played by the dual pair $(\X,\X')$; the parameter $Θ$ belongs to the space of symmetric operators from $\X'$ to $\X$. When $\X=\C$ one recovers the ``$\calH_{-2}$ -construction'' of Kiselev and …
A unified S-matrix framework of quantum singular interactions is presented for the comparison of self-adjoint extensions and physical renormalization. For the long-range conformal interaction the two methods are not equivalent, with renormalization acting as selector of a preferred extension and regulator of the unbounded Hamiltonian.
Supersymmetric (SUSY) transformation operators corresponding to complex factorization constants are analyzed as operators acting in the Hilbert space of functions square integrable on the positive semiaxis. Obtained results are applied to Hamiltonians possessing spectral singularities which are non-Hermitian SUSY partners of selfadjoint operators. A new regularization procedure for the resolution of the identity operator in terms of continuous biorthonormal set of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian eigenfunctions is proposed. It is also shown that the continuous spectrum eigenfunction has zero bino…
We study the radial Schrödinger equation for a particle of mass $m$ in the field of the inverse-square potential $α/r^{2}$ in the medium-weak-coupling region, i.e., with $-1/4\leq2mα/\hbar^{2}\leq3/4$. By using the renormalization method of Beane \textit{et} \textit{al.,}with two regularization potentials, a spherical square well and a spherical $δ$ shell, we illustrate that the procedure of renormalization is independent of the choice of the regularization counterterm. We show that, in the aforementioned range of the coupling constant $α$, there exists at most one bound state, in complete agr…
We examine two kinds of spectral theoretic situations: First, we recall the case of self-adjoint half-line Schrödinger operators on $[a,\infty)$, $a\in\mathbb{R}$, with a regular finite end point $a$ and the case of Schrödinger operators on the real line with locally integrable potentials, which naturally lead to Herglotz functions and $2\times 2$ matrix-valued Herglotz functions representing the associated Weyl-Titchmarsh coefficients. Second, we contrast this with the case of self-adjoint half-line Schrödinger operators on $(a,\infty)$ with a potential strongly singular at the end point $a$.…
Given a self-adjoint operator H, a self-adjoint trace class operator V and a fixed Hilbert-Schmidt operator F with trivial kernel and co-kernel, using limiting absorption principle an explicit set of full Lebesgue measure is defined such that for all points of this set the wave and the scattering matrices can be defined and constructed unambiguously. Many well-known properties of the wave and scattering matrices and operators are proved, including the stationary formula for the scattering matrix. This new abstract scattering theory allows to prove that for any trace class perturbations of arbi…
Given, on the Hilbert space $\H_0$, the self-adjoint operator $B$ and the skew-adjoint operators $C_1$ and $C_2$, we consider, on the Hilbert space $\H\simeq D(B)\oplus\H_0$, the skew-adjoint operator $$W=[\begin{matrix} C_2&\uno -B^2&C_1\end{matrix}]$$ corresponding to the abstract wave equation $\ddotϕ-(C_1+C_2)\dotϕ=-(B^2+C_1C_2)ϕ$. Given then an auxiliary Hilbert space $\fh$ and a linear map $τ:D(B^2)\to\fh$ with a kernel $\K$ dense in $\H_0$, we explicitly construct skew-adjoint operators $W_Θ$ on a Hilbert space $\H_Θ\simeq D(B)\oplus\H_0\oplus \fh$ which coincide with $W$ on $\N\simeq\K…
We extend the classical boundary values \begin{align*} & g(a) = - W(u_{a}(λ_0,.), g)(a) = \lim_{x \downarrow a} \frac{g(x)}{\hat u_{a}(λ_0,x)}, \\ &g^{[1]}(a) = (p g')(a) = W(\hat u_{a}(λ_0,.), g)(a) = \lim_{x \downarrow a} \frac{g(x) - g(a) \hat u_{a}(λ_0,x)}{u_{a}(λ_0,x)} \end{align*} for regular Sturm-Liouville operators associated with differential expressions of the type $τ= r(x)^{-1}[-(d/dx)p(x)(d/dx) + q(x)]$ for a.e. $x\in[a,b] \subset \mathbb{R}$, to the case where $τ$ is singular on $(a,b) \subseteq \mathbb{R}$ and the associated minimal operator $T_{min}$ is bounded from below. Here…
The modified factorization technique of a quantum system characterized by position-dependent mass Hamiltonian is presented. It has been shown that the singular superpotential defined in terms of a mass function and a excited state wave function of a given position-dependent mass Hamiltonian can be used to construct non-singular isospectral Hamiltonians. The method has been illustrated with the help of a few examples.
We analyse the 2-dimensional Euler point vortices dynamics in the Koopman-Von Neumann approach. Classical results provide well-posedness of this dynamics involving singular interactions for a finite number of vortices, on a full-measure set with respect to the volume measure $dx^N$ on the phase space, which is preserved by the measurable flow thanks to the Hamiltonian nature of the system. We identify a core for the generator of the one-parameter group of Koopman-Von Neumann unitaries on $L^2(dx^N)$ associated to said flow, the core being made of observables smooth outside a suitable set on wh…
We give a self-contained presentation of the theory of self-adjoint extensions using the technique of boundary triples. A description of the spectra of self-adjoint extensions in terms of the corresponding Krein maps (Weyl functions) is given. Applications include quantum graphs, point interactions, hybrid spaces, singular perturbations.
We consider the two-dimensional Dirac operator with Lorentz-scalar $δ$-shell interactions on each edge of a star-graph. An orthogonal decomposition is performed which shows such an operator is unitarily equivalent to an orthogonal sum of half-line Dirac operators with off-diagonal Coulomb potentials. This decomposition reduces the computation of the deficiency indices to determining the number of eigenvalues of a one-dimensional spin-orbit operator in the interval $(-1/2,1/2)$. If the number of edges of the star graph is two or three, these deficiency indices can then be analytically determine…
The eigenvalue problem of the spherically symmetric oscillator Hamiltonian is revisited in the context of canonical raising and lowering operators. The Hamiltonian is then factorized in terms of two not mutually adjoint factorizing operators which, in turn, give rise to a non-Hermitian radial Hamiltonian. The set of eigenvalues of this new Hamiltonian is exactly the same as the energy spectrum of the radial oscillator and the new square-integrable eigenfunctions are complex Darboux-deformations of the associated Laguerre polynomials.
Matrix-valued measures provide a natural language for the theory of finite rank perturbations. In this paper we use this language to prove some new perturbation theoretic results. Our main result is a generalization of the Aronszajn--Donoghue theorem about the mutual singularity of the singular parts of the spectrum for rank one perturbations to the case of finite rank perturbations. Simple direct sum type examples indicate that an exact generalization is not possible. However, in this paper we introduce the notion of \emph{vector mutual singularity} for the matrix-valued measures and show tha…
Considerable attention has been recently focused on quantum-mechanical systems with boundaries and/or singular potentials for which the construction of physical observables as self-adjoint (s.a.) operators is a nontrivial problem. We present a comparative review of various methods of specifying ordinary s.a. differential operators generated by formally s.a. differential expressions based on the general theory of s.a. extensions of symmetric operators. The exposition is untraditional and is based on the concept of asymmetry forms generated by adjoint operators. The main attention is given to a …
The purpose of this paper is to study spectral properties of non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators $-Δ-\frac{(n-2)^2}{4|x|^{2}}+V$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with complex-valued potentials $V\in L^{p,\infty}$, $p>n/2$. We prove Keller type inequalities which measure the radius of a disc containing the discrete spectrum, in terms of the $L^{p,\infty}$ norm of $V$. Similar inequalities also hold if the inverse-square potential is replaced by a large class of subcritical potentials with critical singularities at the origin. The main new ingredient in the proof is the uniform Sobolev inequality of Kenig-R…
