Monodromy, vanishing cycles, knots and the adjoint quotient

These are notes from lectures given at the Clay Institute Summer School on "Floer homology, gauge theory and low-dimensional topology" (Budapest, 2004). The first part describes as background some of the geometry of symplectic fibre bundles and their monodromy. The second part, overviewing joint work with Paul Seidel, applies these general ideas and Floer cohomology to certain fibre bundles that arise naturally in Lie theory. This constructs an invariant of oriented links in the three-sphere which is conjecturally equal to Khovanov's combinatorial homology theory.

Reduction of Vaisman structures in complex and quaternionic geometry

We consider locally conformal Kaehler geometry as an equivariant (homothetic) Kaehler geometry: a locally conformal Kaehler manifold is, up to equivalence, a pair (K,Γ) where K is a Kaehler manifold and Γa discrete Lie group of biholomorphic homotheties acting freely and properly discontinuously. We define a new invariant of a locally conformal Kaehler manifold (K,Γ) as the rank of a natural quotient of Γ, and prove its invariance under reduction. Solvable automorphism groups of a compact Kaehler manifold

Let X be a compact Kaehler manifold of complex dimension n. Let G be a connected solvable subgroup of the automorphism group Aut(X), and let N(G) be the normal subgroup of G of elements of null entropy. One of the goals of this paper is to show that G/N(G) is a free abelian group of rank r(G) less than or equal to n-1 and that the rank estimate is optimal. This gives an alternative proof of the conjecture of Tits type. In addition, we show some non-obvious implications on the structure of solvable automorphism groups of compact Kaehler manifolds. Homological Mirror Symmetry for the universal centralizers I: The adjoint group case

We prove homological mirror symmetry for the universal centralizer $J_G$ (a.k.a Toda space), associated to any complex semisimple Lie group $G$. The A-side is a partially wrapped Fukaya category on $J_G$, and the B-side is the category of coherent sheaves on the categorical quotient of a dual maximal torus by the Weyl group action (with some modification if $G$ has a nontrivial center). This is the first and the main part of a two-part series, dealing with $G$ of adjoint type. The general case will be proved in the forthcoming second part [Jin2].

On the case where Adjoint and Coadjoint Orbit Spaces are Symplectomorphic

Let G be an n-dimensional semisimple compact and connected Lie group acting on both the Lie algebra g of G and its dual g*. We show that a nondegenerate Killing form of G induces an Ad*-equivariant isomorphism of g onto g* which, in turn, induces by passage to quotients a symplectomorphism between adjoint and coadjoint orbit spaces of G.

Localization of Equivariant Cohomology for Compact and Non-compact Group Actions

We give a brief introduction to the Berline-Vergne localization formula for the finite-dimensional setting and indicate how the Duistermaat-Heckman formula is derived from it. We consider applications of the localization formula when it is specialized to a maximal dimensional co-adjoint orbit. In particular, the case when the co-adjoint orbit is a quotient $G/T$ of a connected Lie group $G$ modulo a maximal torus $T$ is analyzed in detail. We describe also a generalization of the localization formula to non-compact group actions.
