Given an action of a complex reductive Lie group G on a normal variety X, we show that every analytically Zariski-open subset of X admitting an analytic Hilbert quotient with projective quotient space is given as the set of semistable points with respect to some G-linearised Weil divisor on X.
Applying this result to Hamiltonian actions on algebraic varieties we prove that semistability with respect to a momentum map is equivalent to GIT-semistability in the sense of Mumford and Hausen. It follows that the number of compact momentum map quotients of a given algebraic Hamiltonian G-variety is finite. As further corollary we derive a projectivity criterion for varieties with compact Kaehler quotient.
Additionally, as a byproduct of our discussion we give an example of a complete Kaehlerian non-projective algebraic surface, which may be of independent interest.
Each Scorza variety and its secant varieties in the ambient projective space are identified, in the realm of singular Poisson-Kaehler geometry, in terms of projectivizations of holomorphic nilpotent orbits in suitable Lie algebras of hermitian type, the holomorphic nilpotent orbits, in turn, being affine varieties. The ambient projective space acquires an exotic Kaehler structure, the closed stratum being the Scorza variety and the closures of the higher strata its secant varieties. In this fashion, the secant varieties become exotic projective varieties. In the rank 3 case, the four regular S…
We investigate algebraicity properties of quotients of complex spaces by complex reductive Lie groups G. We obtain a projectivity result for compact momentum map quotients of algebraic G-varieties. Furthermore, we prove equivariant versions of Kodaira's Embedding Theorem and Chow's Theorem relative to an analytic Hilbert quotient. Combining these results we derive an equivariant algebraisation theorem for complex spaces with projective quotient.
The results known for Green-Lazarsfeld sets and solvable or nilpotent quotients of Kaehler groups are extended to the class of (compact Kaehler) geometric orbifolds with finite and integral multiplicities. The proofs are by reduction to the known case of compact Kaehler manifolds.
We consider Fano manifolds M that admit a collection of finite automorphism groups G_1, ..., G_k, such that the quotients M/G_i are smooth Fano manifolds possessing a Kaehler-Einstein metric. Under some numerical and smoothness assumptions on the ramification divisors, we prove that M admits a Kaehler-Einstein metric too.
Summary: The Hodge conjecture asks whether rational Hodge classes on a smooth projective manifolds are generated by the classes of algebraic subsets, or equivalently by Chern classes of coherent sheaves. On a compact Kaehler manifold, Hodge conjecture is known to be false if algebraic subsets are replaced with analytic subsets. Here we show that it is even false that for a Kaehler manifold, Hodge classes are generated by Chern classes of coherent sheaves. We also show that finite free resolution do not in general exist for coherent sheaves on compact Kaehler manifolds.
Bosio generalized the construction by Meersseman of a family of non-algebraic compact complex manifolds of any dimension. We establish a link between Bosio's construction and GIT quotients. We show that his generalization parallels exactly the extension from Mumford's GIT to the more general GIT developed by Bialynicki-Birula and Swiecicka. This gives new insights into the relationship between the two non-algebraic families, from which we obtain new results on their geometry.
We study the similarities between the Fano varieties of lines on a cubic fourfold, a hyper-Kaehler fourfold studied by Beauville and Donagi, and the hyper-Kaehler fourfold constructed by Debarre and Voisin. We exhibit an analog of the notion of "triangle" for these varieties and prove that the 6-dimensional variety of "triangles" is a Lagrangian subvariety in the cube of the constructed hyper-Kaehler fourfold.
A singular Moishezon space is not projective even if it is Kaehler. This paper gives a projectivity criterion for Kaehler Moishezon spaces. We shall use this projectivity criterion to show the density of projective symplectic varieties in the Kuranishi family of a (singular) symplectic variety.
We show that any set of quotients with fixed Chern classes of a given coherent sheaf on a compact Kaehler manifold is bounded in a sense which we define. The result is proved by adapting Grothendieck's boundedness criterium expressed via the Hilbert polynomial to the Kaehler set-up. As a consequence we obtain the compactness of the connected components of the Douady space of a compact Kaehler manifold.
The purpose of this paper is to provide a way to compute the intersection cohomology of the GIT quotient of a nonsingular projective variety. We show that the middle perversity intersection cohomology of the GIT quotient $M//G$ is naturally embedded into the $G$ equivariant cohomology of $M^{ss}$ under an assumption satisfied by many interesting spaces. This embedding enables us to compute the intersection pairing in terms of the cup product structure of the equivariant cohomology ring. We also show that the image is a subspace defined by truncation. Overall, we can compute the intersection co…
Let X be a compact Kaehler manifold of complex dimension n. Let G be a connected solvable subgroup of the automorphism group Aut(X), and let N(G) be the normal subgroup of G of elements of null entropy. One of the goals of this paper is to show that G/N(G) is a free abelian group of rank r(G) less than or equal to n-1 and that the rank estimate is optimal. This gives an alternative proof of the conjecture of Tits type. In addition, we show some non-obvious implications on the structure of solvable automorphism groups of compact Kaehler manifolds. Furthermore, we also show that if the rank r(G)…
We characterize Kaehler manifolds with trivial logarithmic tangent bundle (with respect to a divisor D) as a class of certain compatifications of complex semi-tori.
Generalizing cones over projective toric varieties, we present arbitrary toric varieties as quotients of quasiaffine toric varieties. Such quotient presentations correspond to groups of Weil divisors generating the topology. Groups comprising Cartier divisors define free quotients, whereas $\QQ$-Cartier divisors define geometric quotients. Each quotient presentation yields homogeneous coordinates. Using homogeneous coordinates, we express quasicoherent sheaves in terms of multigraded modules and describe the set of morphisms into a toric variety.
Let $G=SL(n, \mathbb{C}),$ and $T$ be a maximal torus of $G,$ where $n$ is a positive even integer. In this article, we study the GIT quotients of the Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian $G_{2,n}.$ We prove that the GIT quotients of the Richardson varieties in the minimal dimensional Schubert variety admitting stable points in $G_{2,n}$ are projective spaces. Further, we prove that the GIT quotients of certain Richardson varieties in $G_{2,n}$ are projective toric varieties. Also, we prove that the GIT quotients of the Schubert varieties in $G_{2,n}$ have at most finite set of singular poin…
In this paper, the generalized Bloch Conjecture on zero cycles for the quotient of certain complete intersections with trivial canonical bundle is proved to hold. As an application of Bloch-Srinivas method on the decomposition of the diagonal, we compute the rational coefficient Lawson homology for 1-cycles and codimension two cycles for these quotient varieties. The (Generalized) Hodge Conjecture is proved to hold for codimension two cycles (and hence also for 2-cycles) on these quotient varieties.
We give an explicit characterization of all principally polarized abelian varieties $(A,Θ)$ such that there is a finite subgroup of automorphisms $G$ of $A$ that preserve the numerical class of $Θ$, and such that the quotient variety $A/G$ is smooth. We also give a complete classification of smooth quotients of Jacobians of curves.
We generalize the well-known numerical criterion for projective spaces by Cho, Miyaoka and Shepherd-Barron to varieties with at worst quotient singularities. Let $X$ be a normal projective variety of dimension $n \geq 3$ with at most quotient singularities. Our result asserts that if $C \cdot (-K_X) \geq n+1$ for every curve $C \subset X$, then $X \cong \PP^n$.
We study Fourier-Mukai transforms for smooth projective varieties whose canonical bundles have finite order, and relate them to equivariant transforms on certain finite covering spaces. Our results lead to new equivalences of derived categories for Enriques and bielliptic surfaces.
We study finite quotients of abelian varieties (fqav for short) i.e. quotients of abelian varieties by finite groups. We show that Q-abelian varieties (i.e. fqav's with $\mathbb Q$-linearly trivial canonical divisors) are characterized by the existence of quasiétale polarized (or int-amplified) endomorphisms. We show that every fqav has a finite quasiétale cover by the product of an abelian variety and a $\mathbb Q$-Fano fqav. Using such coverings, we give a characterization of $\mathbb Q$-Fano fqav's, and show that $\mathbb Q$-Fano fqav's and Q-abelian varieties are ``building blocks'' of gen…
In this paper, we consider the GIT quotients of Schubert varieties for the action of a maximal torus. We describe the minuscule Schubert varieties for which the semistable locus is contained in the smooth locus. As a consequence, we study the smoothness of torus quotients of Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian. We also prove that the torus quotient of any Schubert variety in the homogeneous space $SL(n, \mathbb C)/P$ is projectively normal with respect to the line bundle $\mathcal L_{α_0}$ and the quotient space is a projective space, where the line bundle $\mathcal L_{α_0}$ and the parabol…
This paper studies two related subjects. One is some combinatorics arising from linear projections of polytopes and fans of cones. The other is quotient varieties of toric varieties. The relation is that projections of polytopes are related to quotients of projective toric varieties and projection of fans are related to quotients of general toric varieties. Despite its relation to geometry the first part is purely combinatorial and should be of interest in its own right.
We show that a weight variety, which is a quotient of a flag variety by the maximal torus, admits a flat degeneration to a toric variety. In particular, we show that the moduli spaces of spatial polygons degenerate to polarized toric varieties with the moment polytopes defined by the lengths of their diagonals. We extend these results to more general Flaschka-Millson hamiltonians on the quotients of products of projective spaces. We also study boundary toric divisors and certain real loci.
We study the quotient of parabolic Deligne-Lusztig varieties by a finite unipotent group U^F where U is the unipotent radical of a rational parabolic subgroup P = L U. We show that in some particular cases the cohomology of this quotient can be expressed in terms of "smaller" parabolic Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to the Levi subgroup L.
In this paper we prove a characterization of quotients of Abelian varieties by the actions of finite groups that are free in codimension-one via some vanishing conditions on the orbifold Chern classes. The characterization is given among a class of varieties with mild singularities that are more general than quotient singularities, namely among the class of klt varieties. Furthermore we show that over a projective klt variety, any semistable reflexive sheaf with vanishing orbifold Chern classes can be obtained as the invariant part of a locally-free sheaf on a finite Galois cover whose associa…
We discuss the basic properties of various versions of two variable elliptic genus with special attention to the equivariant elliptic genus. The main applications are to the elliptic genera attached to non-compact GITs, including the elliptic genera of Witten's phases on $N=2$ theories.
We develop a novel theory of one-parameter families of multi-view varieties. These families are induced by quotient lattices over discrete valuation rings and generalise the notion of \textit{Mustafin varieties}. We study the geometry and the combinatorics of the limit of these families.
The aim of this paper is to study the pro-algebraic fundamental group of a compact Kaehler manifold. Following work by Simpson, the structure of this group's pro-reductive quotient is already well understood. We show that Hodge-theoretic methods can also be used to establish that the pro-unipotent radical is quadratically presented. This generalises both Deligne et al.'s result on the de Rham fundamental group, and Goldman and Millson's result on deforming representations of Kaehler groups, and can be regarded as a consequence of formality of the schematic homotopy type. New examples are given…
In characteristic zero, if a quotient variety has a crepant resolution, the Euler characteristic of the crepant resolution is equal to the number of conjugacy classes of the acting group, by Batyrev's theorem. This is one of the McKay correspondence. It is natural to consider the analogue statement in the positive characteristic. In this paper, we present sequences of crepant resolutions of quotient varieties in the positive characteristic and show that one of the sequences gives a counterexample to the analogue statement of Batyrev's theorem.
Let $X$ be a projective normal toric variety and $T_0$ a rank one subtorus of the defining torus of $X$. We show that the normalization of the Chow quotient $X//T_0$, in the sense of Kapranov-Sturmfels-Zelevinsky, coarsely represents the moduli space of stable log maps to $X$ with discrete data given by $T_0\subset X$.
This paper concerns the explicit construction of extremal Kaehler metrics on total spaces of projective bundles, which have been studied in many places. We present a unified approach, motivated by the theory of hamiltonian 2-forms (as introduced and studied in previous papers in the series) but this paper is largely independent of that theory. We obtain a characterization, on a large family of projective bundles, of those `admissible' Kaehler classes (i.e., the ones compatible with the bundle structure in a way we make precise) which contain an extremal Kaehler metric. In many cases, such as o…
We prove that all projective crepant resolutions of Nakajima quiver varieties satisfying natural conditions are also Nakajima quiver varieties. More generally, we classify the small birational models of many Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT) quotients by introducing a sufficient condition for the GIT quotient of an affine variety $V$ by the action of a reductive group $G$ to be a relative Mori Dream Space. Two surprising examples illustrate that our new condition is optimal. When the condition holds, we show that the linearisation map identifies a region of the GIT fan with the Mori chamber dec…
In this paper, we prove that any two birational projective varieties with finite quotient singularities can be realized as two geometric GIT quotients of a non-singular projective variety by a reductive algebraic group. Then, by applying the theory of Variation of Geometric Invariant Theory Quotients ([3]), we show that they are related by a sequence of GIT wall-crossing flips.
In this paper we give an explicit formula for the Riemann-Roch map for singular schemes which are quotients of smooth schemes by diagonalizable groups. As an application we obtain a simple proof of a formula for the Todd class of a simplicial toric variety. An equivariant version of this formula was previously obtained for complete simplicial toric varieties by Brion and Vergne using different techniques.
For a scheme S with a good action of a finite abelian group G having enough roots of unity we show that the quotient map on the G-equivariant Grothendieck ring of varieties over S is well defined with image in the Grothendieck ring of varieties over S/G in the tame case, and in the modified Grothendieck ring in the wild case. To prove this we use a result on the class of the quotient of a vector space by a quasi-linear action in the Grothendieck ring of varieties due to Esnault and Viehweg, which we also generalize to the case of wild actions. As an application we deduce that the quotient of t…
In [3], it is proved that the quotient of an abelian variety $A$ by a finite order automorphism $g$ is uniruled if and only if some power of $g$ satisfies a numerical condition $0<\age(g^k)<1$. In this paper, we show that $\age(g^k)=1$ is enough to guarantee that $A/\langle g\rangle$ has at least one rational curve.
In this note, we consider unramified cohomology with $\mathbb{Z}/2$ coefficients for some (degree two) quotient varieties and describe a method that allows one to prove the non-vanishing of these groups under certain conditions. We apply this method to prove a non-vanishing statement in the case of Kummer varieties. Combining this with work of Colliot-Thélène and Voisin, we obtain a new type of three-dimensional counterexample to the integral Hodge conjecture.
We prove that for any two integers $g\geq 4$ and $g'\leq 2g-1$, there exist abelian varieties over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ which are not quotients of a Jacobian of dimension $g'$. Our method in fact proves that most Abelian varieties satisfy this property, when counting by height relative to a fixed finite map to projective space.
This article is motivated by the following local-to-global question: is every variety with tame quotient singularities globally the quotient of a smooth variety by a finite group? We show that this question has a positive answer for all quasi-projective varieties which are expressible as a quotient of a smooth variety by a split torus (e.g. simplicial toric varieties). Although simplicial toric varieties are rarely toric quotients of smooth varieties by finite groups, we give an explicit procedure for constructing the quotient structure using toric techniques. This result follow from a charact…
We obtain the trace map image of the values of certain harmonic volumes for some quotients of Fermat curves. This provides the algorithm that the algebraic cycles called by the k-th Ceresa cycles are not algebraically equivalent to zero in the Jacobian varieties.
We introduce complete quotients over the projective line and prove that they form smooth projective varieties. The resulting parameter spaces coincide with the varieties constructed in [HLS11] and [Shao11]. Hence they provide modular smooth compactifications with normal crossing boundaries of the spaces of algebraic maps from the projective line to Grassmannian varieties.
We consider the structure of classes of curves on a projective simply connected surface for which fundamental groups of the complements admit free quotients having rank greater than one with irreducible components belonging to a selected subset the effective cone of the surface. In particular we show a finiteness result for such classes if the ranks of free quotients of the fundamental groups with components in the subset of effective cone are sufficiently large.
For any simple, simply connected algebraic group $G$ of type $B,C$ and $D$ and for any maximal parabolic subgroup $P$ of $G$, we provide a criterion for a Richardson variety in $G/P$ to admit semistable points for the action of a maximal torus $T$ with respect to an ample line bundle on $G/P$.
We consider the action of a subtorus of the big torus on a toric variety. The aim of the paper is to define a natural notion of a quotient for this setting and to give an explicit algorithm for the construction of this quotient from the combinatorial data corresponding to the pair consisting of the subtorus and the toric variety. Moreover, we study the relations of such quotients with good quotients. We construct a good model, i.e. a dominant toric morphism from the given toric variety to some ``maximal'' toric variety having a good quotient by the induced action of the given subtorus.
We prove that for an abelian group $G$ of order $n$ the morphism $ φ\colon \mathbf{P}(V^*)\longrightarrow \mathbf{P} ((\mathrm{sym}^n V^*)^G)$ defined by $φ([f]) = [\prod_{σ\in G} σ\cdot f ]$ is nondegenerate for every finite-dimensional representation $V$ of $G$ if and only if either $n$ is a prime number or $n=4$.
In this article we investigate algebraic morphisms between toric varieties. Given presentations of toric varieties as quotients we are interested in the question when a morphism admits a lifting to these quotient presentations. We show that this can be completely answered in terms of invariant divisors. As an application we prove that two toric varieties, which are isomorphic as abstract algebraic varieties, are even isomorphic as toric varieties. This generalizes a well-known result of Demushkin on affine toric varieties.
In this paper we classify all the quivers and corresponding dimension vectors having a smooth space of semisimple representation classes. The result is that these quiver settings can be reduced via some specific reduction steps to 3 simple types.
We classify all $n$-dimensional reduced Cohen-Macaulay modular quotient variety $\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{F}^n/C_{2p}$ and study their singularities, where $p$ is a prime number and $C_{2p}$ denotes the cyclic group of order $2p$. In particular, we present an example that demonstrates that the problem proposed by Yasuda \cite[Problem 6.6]{Yas2015} has a negative answer if the condition that "$G$ is a small subgroup" was dropped.
The main goal of this paper is to show that the notions of Weil and Cartier $\mathbb{Q}$-divisors coincide for $V$-manifolds and give a procedure to express a rational Weil divisor as a rational Cartier divisor. The theory is illustrated on weighted projective spaces and weighted blow-ups.
Let $r < n$ be positive integers and further suppose $r$ and $n$ are coprime. We study the GIT quotient of Schubert varieties $X(w)$ in the Grassmannian $G_{r,n}$, admitting semistable points for the action of $T$ with respect to the $T$-linearized line bundle ${\cal L}(nω_r)$. We give necessary and sufficient combinatorial conditions for the GIT quotient $T\backslash\mkern-6mu\backslash X(w)^{ss}_{T}({\cal L}(nω_r))$ to be smooth.
