We prove that all projective crepant resolutions of Nakajima quiver varieties satisfying natural conditions are also Nakajima quiver varieties. More generally, we classify the small birational models of many Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT) quotients by introducing a sufficient condition for the GIT quotient of an affine variety $V$ by the action of a reductive group $G$ to be a relative Mori Dream Space. Two surprising examples illustrate that our new condition is optimal. When the condition holds, we show that the linearisation map identifies a region of the GIT fan with the Mori chamber decomposition of the relative movable cone of $V /\!/_θ G$. If $V/\!/_θ G$ is a crepant resolution of $Y\!\!:= V/\!/_{0} G$, then every projective crepant resolution of $Y$ is obtained by varying $θ$. Under suitable conditions, we show that this is the case for quiver varieties and hypertoric varieties. Similarly, for any finite subgroup $Γ\subset \mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{C})$ whose nontrivial conjugacy classes are all junior, we obtain a simple geometric proof of the fact that every projective crepant resolution of $\mathbb{C}^3/Γ$ is a fine moduli space of $θ$-stable $Γ$-constellations.
Given a quiver, Nakajima introduced the quiver variety and the Hecke correspondence, which is a closed subvariety of Cartesian products of quiver varieties. In this paper, we consider two nested quiver varieties as fiber products of Hecke correspondences along natural projections. After blowing up the diagonal, we prove that they are isomorphic to a quadruple moduli space which Neguţ observed for the Jordan quiver. The main ingredient is Jiang's derived projectivization theory and Hekking's derived blow-up theory, while we obtain the local model when both the two derived schemes are quasi-smoo…
Let αbe a Schur root; let h=hcf_v(α(v)) and let p = 1 - < α/h,α/h >. Then a moduli space of representations of dimension vector αis birational to p h by h matrices up to simultaneous conjugacy. Therefore, if h=1,2,3 or 4, then such a moduli space is a rational variety and if h divides 420 it is a stably rational variety.
We use categorical method and birational geometry to study moduli spaces of quiver representations. From certain "representable" functor, we construct a birational transformation from the moduli space of representations of one quiver to another new quiver with one vertex less. The dimension vector and the stability for the new moduli are determined functorially. We introduce several relative notions of stability to study such a birational transformation. The essential case is proven to be the usual blow-ups. Moreover, we compare the induced ample divisors for the two moduli. We illustrate this…
For a finite subgroup $Γ\subset \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ and for $n\geq 1$, we use variation of GIT quotient for Nakajima quiver varieties to study the birational geometry of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on the minimal resolution $S$ of the Kleinian singularity $\mathbb{C}^2/Γ$. It is well known that $X:=\mathrm{Hilb}^{[n]}(S)$ is a projective, crepant resolution of the symplectic singularity $\mathbb{C}^{2n}/Γ_n$, where $Γ_n=Γ\wr\mathfrak{S}_n$ is the wreath product. We prove that every projective, crepant resolution of $\mathbb{C}^{2n}/Γ_n$ can be realised as the fine moduli space of $…
We construct small desingularizations of moduli spaces of semistable quiver representations for indivisible dimension vectors using deformations of stabilites and a dimension estimate for nullcones. We apply this construction to several classes of GIT quotients.
In this work, we improve results about GIT-cones associated to the action of any reductive group $G$ on a projective variety $X$. These results are applied to give a short proof of a Derksen-Weyman's Theorem which parametrizes bijectively the faces of a rational cone associated to any quiver without oriented cycle.
In the setting of a variety $X$ admitting a tilting bundle $T$ we consider the problem of constructing $X$ as a quiver GIT quotient of the endomorphism algebra $A=\textrm{End}_X(T)^{\textrm{op}}$ corresponding to the tilting bundle. We prove that if the tilting equivalence restricts to a bijection between the skyscraper sheaves of $X$ and the closed points of a quiver GIT moduli functor for $A$ then $X$ is indeed a fine moduli space for this quiver GIT moduli functor, and we prove this result without any assumptions on the singularities of $X$. As an application we consider varieties which are…
We study the birational geometry of $\bar{M}_{3,1}$ and $\bar{M}_{4,1}$. In particular, we pose a pointed analogue of the Slope Conjecture and prove it in these low-genus cases. Using variation of GIT, we construct birational contractions of these spaces in which certain divisors of interest -- the pointed Brill-Noether divisors -- are contracted. As a consequence, we see that these pointed Brill-Noether divisors generate extremal rays of the effective cones for these spaces.
Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g \geq 3$. We give a new description of the theta map for moduli spaces of rank 2 semistable vector bundles with trivial determinant. In orther to do this, we describe a fibration of (a birational model of) the moduli space, whose fibers are GIT quotients $(\mathbb{P}^1)^{2g}//\operatorname{PGL(2)}$. Then, we use recent results of Kumar to identify the restriction of the theta map to these GIT quotients with some explicit osculating projection. As a corollary of this construction, we obtain a birational equivalence between the ramification locus of th…
Let $C$ be an algebraic smooth complex genus $g>1$ curve. The object of this paper is the study of the birational structure of the coarse moduli space $U_C(r,0)$ of semi-stable rank r vector bundles on $C$ with degree 0 determinant and of its moduli subspace $SU_C(r)$ given by the vector bundles with trivial determinant. Notably we prove that $U_C(r,0)$ (resp. $SU_C(r)$) is birational to a fibration over the symmetric product $C^(rg)$ (resp. over $P^{(r-1)g}$) whose fibres are GIT quotients $(P^{r-1})^{rg}//PGL(r)$. In the cases of low rank and genus our construction produces families of class…
We define filtered ADHM data and connect a notion of filtered quiver representations to Grothendieck--Springer resolutions. We also provide current developments and give a list of research problems to further study filtered ADHM equation.
We give a short proof of W{\lodarczyk's theorem that any birational map between smooth projective varieties in characteristic zero is a composition of weighted blowups and blowdowns.
In this paper we study the geometry of GIT configurations of $n$ ordered points on $\mathbb{P}^1$ both from the the birational and the biregular viewpoint. In particular, we prove that any extremal ray of the Mori cone of effective curves of the quotient $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n//PGL(2)$, taken with the symmetric polarization, is generated by a one dimensional boundary stratum of the moduli space. Furthermore, we develop some technical machinery that we use to compute the canonical divisor and the Hilbert polynomial of $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n//PGL(2)$ in its natural embedding, and its group of automorphism…
This paper provides a GIT construction of the Moduli Space of Stable Maps as a GIT quotient of the Graph Space by SL(2,C). As a corollary, we get a birational map from the 0-pointed Moduli Space to a projective variety.
By work of Looijenga and others, one has a good understanding of the relationship between GIT and Baily-Borel compactifications for the moduli spaces of degree 2 K3 surfaces, cubic fourfolds, and a few other related examples. The similar-looking cases of degree 4 K3 surfaces and double EPW sextics turn out to be much more complicated for arithmetic reasons. In this paper, we refine work of Looijenga to allow us to handle these cases. Specifically, in analogy with the so-called Hassett-Keel program for the moduli space of curves, we study the variation of log canonical models for locally symmet…
In this paper we prove the rationality of the capped vertex function with descendents for arbitrary Nakajima quiver varieties with generic stability conditions. We generalise the proof given by Smirnov to the general case, which requires to use techniques of tautological classes rather than the fixed-point basis. This result confirms that the "monodromy" of the capped vertex function is trivial, which gives a strong constraint for the monodromy of the capping operators. We will also provide a GIT wall-crossing formula for the capped vertex function in terms of the quantum difference operators …
We introduce a notion of stability for sheaves with respect to several polarisations that generalises the usual notion of Gieseker-stability. We prove, under a boundedness assumption, which we show to hold on threefolds or for rank two sheaves on base manifolds of arbitrary dimension, that semistable sheaves have a projective coarse moduli space that depends on a natural stability parameter. We then give two applications of this machinery. First, we show that given a real ample class $ω\in N^1(X)_\mathbb{R}$ on a smooth projective threefold $X$ there exists a projective moduli space of sheaves…
We develop an algebro-geometric formulation for neural networks in machine learning using the moduli space of framed quiver representations. We find natural Hermitian metrics on the universal bundles over the moduli which are compatible with the GIT quotient construction by the general linear group, and show that their Ricci curvatures give a Kähler metric on the moduli. Moreover, we use toric moment maps to construct activation functions, and prove the universal approximation theorem for the multi-variable activation function constructed from the complex projective space.
The aim of this paper is to study the singularities of certain moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces by means of Nakajima quiver varieties. The singularities in question arise from the choice of a non--generic polarization, with respect to which we consider stability, and admit natural symplectic resolutions corresponding to choices of general polarizations. For sheaves that are pure of dimension one, we show that these moduli spaces are, locally around a singular point, isomorphic to a quiver variety and that, via this isomorphism, the natural symplectic resolutions correspond to variations…
Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g\geq 3$. In this paper we give a new geometric description of the theta map for moduli spaces of rank 2 semistable vector bundles on $C$ with trivial determinant. In order to do this, we describe a fibration of (a birational model of) the moduli space, whose fibers are GIT quotients $(\mathbb{P}^1)^{2g}//PGL(2)$. Then, we identify the restriction of the theta map to these GIT quotients with some explicit degree two osculating projection. As a corollary of this construction, we obtain a birational inclusion of a fibration in Kummer $(g-1)$-folds over …
We prove that a GIT chamber quotient of an affine variety $X=Spec(A)$ by a reductive group $G$, where $A$ is an almost factorial domain, is a Mori dream space if it is projective, regardless of the codimension of the unstable locus. This includes an explicit description of the Picard number, the pseudoeffective cone, and the Mori chambers in terms of GIT. We apply the results to quiver moduli, to show that they are Mori dream spaces if the quiver contains no oriented cycles, and if stability and semistability coincide. We give a formula for the Picard number in quiver terms. As a second applic…
Given a quasiprojective algebraic variety with a reductive group action, we describe a relationship between its equivariant derived category and the derived category of its geometric invariant theory quotient. This generalizes classical descriptions of the category of coherent sheaves on projective space and categorifies several results in the theory of Hamiltonian group actions on projective manifolds. This perspective generalizes and provides new insight into examples of derived equivalences between birational varieties. We provide a criterion under which two different GIT quotients are deri…
In previous work, we have introduced a program aimed at studying the birational geometry of locally symmetric varieties of Type IV associated to moduli of certain projective varieties of K3 type. In particular, a concrete goal of our program is to understand the relationship between GIT and Baily-Borel compactifications for quartic K3 surfaces, K3's which are double covers of a smooth quadric surface, and double EPW sextics. In our first paper (arXiv:1607.01324), based on arithmetic considerations, we have given conjectural decompositions into simple birational transformations of the period ma…
In this paper, we prove that any two birational projective varieties with finite quotient singularities can be realized as two geometric GIT quotients of a non-singular projective variety by a reductive algebraic group. Then, by applying the theory of Variation of Geometric Invariant Theory Quotients ([3]), we show that they are related by a sequence of GIT wall-crossing flips.
We compare the Kontsevich moduli space of genus 0 stable maps to projective space with the quasi-map space when $d=3$. More precisely, we prove that when $d=3$, the obvious birational map from the quasi-map space to the moduli space of stable maps is the composition of three blow-ups followed by two blow-downs. Furthermore, we identify the blow-up/down centers explicitly in terms of the moduli spaces for lower degrees. Using this, we calculate the Betti numbers, the integral Picard group, and the rational cohomology ring. The degree two case is worked out as a warm-up.
We analyze GIT stability of nets of quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^4$ up to projective equivalence. Since a general net of quadrics defines a canonically embedded smooth curve of genus five, the resulting GIT quotient gives a birational model of the moduli space of genus 5 curves. We study the geometry of the associated contraction and prove that the constructed GIT quotient is the final step of the log minimal model program for the moduli space of genus 5 curves.
We study the GIT-quotient of the Cartesian power of projective space modulo the projective orthogonal group. A classical isomorphism of this group with the Inversive group of birational transformations of the projective space of one dimension less allows one to interpret these spaces as configuration spaces of complex or real spheres.
The three-dimensional McKay correspondence seeks to relate the geometry of crepant resolutions of Gorenstein $3$-fold quotient singularities $\mathbb{A}^3/G$ with the representation theory of the group $G$. The first crepant resolution studied in depth was the $G$-Hilbert scheme $G\text{-Hilb}\,\mathbb{A}^3$, which is also a moduli space of $θ$-stable representations of the McKay quiver associated to $G$. As the stability parameter $θ$ varies, we obtain many other crepant resolutions. In this paper we focus on the case where $G$ is abelian, and compute explicit inequalities for the chamber of …
We investigate field theories on the worldvolume of a D3-brane transverse to partial resolutions of a $\Z_3\times\Z_3$ Calabi-Yau threefold quotient singularity. We deduce the field content and lagrangian of such theories and present a systematic method for mapping the moment map levels characterizing the partial resolutions of the singularity to the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters of the D-brane worldvolume theory. As opposed to the simpler cases studied before, we find a complex web of partial resolutions and associated field-theoretic Fayet-Iliopoulos deformations. The analysis is performed by …
S. Kondo has constructed a ball quotient compactification for the moduli space of non-hyperelliptic genus four curves. In this paper, we show that this space essentially coincides with a GIT quotient of the Chow variety of canonically embedded genus four curves. More specifically, we give an explicit description of this GIT quotient, and show that the birational map from this space to Kondo's space is resolved by the blow-up of a single point. This provides a modular interpretation of the points in the boundary of Kondo's space. Connections with the slope nine space in the Hassett-Keel program…
We prove that the Chow quotient parametrizing configurations of n points in $\mathbb{P}^d$ which generically lie on a rational normal curve is isomorphic to $\overline{M}_{0,n}$, generalizing the well-known $d = 1$ result of Kapranov. In particular, $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ admits birational morphisms to all the corresponding geometric invariant theory (GIT) quotients. For symmetric linearizations the polarization on each GIT quotient pulls back to a divisor that spans the same extremal ray in the symmetric nef cone of $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ as a conformal blocks line bundle. A symmetry in conformal…
Extending work of Bielawski-Dancer and Konno, we develop a theory of toric hyperkahler varieties, which involves toric geometry, matroid theory and convex polyhedra. The framework is a detailed study of semi-projective toric varieties, meaning GIT quotients of affine spaces by torus actions, and specifically, of Lawrence toric varieties, meaning GIT quotients of even-dimensional affine spaces by symplectic torus actions. A toric hyperkahler variety is a complete intersection in a Lawrence toric variety. Both varieties are non-compact, and they share the same cohomology ring, namely, the Stanle…
