This paper provides a GIT construction of the Moduli Space of Stable Maps as a GIT quotient of the Graph Space by SL(2,C). As a corollary, we get a birational map from the 0-pointed Moduli Space to a projective variety.
We prove that the moduli spaces of K3 surfaces with non-symplectic involution are rational for four deformation types. With the previous results, this establishes the rationality of those moduli spaces except two classical cases.
K3 surfaces with non-symplectic involution are classified by open sets of seventy-five arithmetic quotients of type IV. We prove that those moduli spaces are rational except two classical cases.
We prove that the moduli spaces of K3 surfaces with non-symplectic involutions are unirational. As a by-product we describe configuration spaces of 4<d<9 points in the projective plane as arithmetic quotients of type IV.
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack which is generically a scheme and has quasi-projective coarse moduli. If $\mathcal{X}$ has elementary Abelian 2-group stabilizers and the coarse moduli of the inertia stack is smooth, we show there exists a semiorthogonal decomposition of the derived category of $\mathcal{X}$ where the pieces are equivalent to the derived category of the components of the coarse moduli of the inertia stack.
We construct small desingularizations of moduli spaces of semistable quiver representations for indivisible dimension vectors using deformations of stabilites and a dimension estimate for nullcones. We apply this construction to several classes of GIT quotients.
We discuss the GIT moduli of semistable pairs consisting of a cubic curve and a line on the projective plane. We study in some detail this moduli and compare it with another moduli suggested by Alexeev. It is the moduli of pairs (with no specified semi-abelian action) consisting of a cubic curve with at worst nodal singularities and a line which does not pass through singular points of the cubic curve. Meanwhile, we make a comparison between Nakamura's compactification of the moduli of level three elliptic curves and these two moduli spaces.
We investigate the moduli space of sheaves supported on space curves of degree 4 and having Euler characteristic 1. We give an elementary proof of the fact that this moduli space consists of three irreducible components.
The moduli space $\cM_g$ of nonsingular projective curves of genus $g$ is compactified into the moduli $\bcM_g$ of Deligne-Mumford stable curves of genus $g$. We compactify in a similar way the moduli space of abelian varieties by adding some mildly degenerating limits of abelian varieties. A typical case is the moduli space of Hesse cubics. Any Hesse cubic is GIT-stable in the sense that its $\SL(3)$-orbit is closed in the semistable locus, and conversely any GIT-stable planar cubic is one of Hesse cubics. Similarly in arbitrary dimension, the moduli space of abelian varieties is compactified…
In a previous paper, the author and David Swinarski constructed the moduli spaces of stable maps, \bar M_g,n(P^r,d), via geometric invariant theory (GIT). That paper required the base field to be the complex numbers, a restriction which this paper removes: here the coarse moduli spaces of stable maps are constructed via GIT over a more general base.
Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g \geq 3$. We give a new description of the theta map for moduli spaces of rank 2 semistable vector bundles with trivial determinant. In orther to do this, we describe a fibration of (a birational model of) the moduli space, whose fibers are GIT quotients $(\mathbb{P}^1)^{2g}//\operatorname{PGL(2)}$. Then, we use recent results of Kumar to identify the restriction of the theta map to these GIT quotients with some explicit osculating projection. As a corollary of this construction, we obtain a birational equivalence between the ramification locus of th…
We construct the Mumford-Knudsen space of n pointed stable rational curves by a sequence of explicit blow-ups from the GIT quotient (P^1)^n//SL(2) with respect to the symmetric linearization O(1,...,1). The intermediate blown-up spaces turn out to be the moduli spaces of weighted pointed stable curves for suitable ranges of weights. As an application, we provide a new unconditional proof of M. Simpson's Theorem about the log canonical models of the Mumford-Knudsen space. We also give a basis of the Picard group of the moduli spaces of weighted pointed stable curves.
We compare the Kontsevich moduli space of genus 0 stable maps to projective space with the quasi-map space when $d=3$. More precisely, we prove that when $d=3$, the obvious birational map from the quasi-map space to the moduli space of stable maps is the composition of three blow-ups followed by two blow-downs. Furthermore, we identify the blow-up/down centers explicitly in terms of the moduli spaces for lower degrees. Using this, we calculate the Betti numbers, the integral Picard group, and the rational cohomology ring. The degree two case is worked out as a warm-up.
Given a vector bundle $E$ of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on a curve $C$ of genus $g$, one can associate to $E$ in a natural way several other vector bundles. For example, one can take wedge powers of $E$. If $E$ is generated by global sections, the kernel of the evaluation map of sections is again a vector bundle. Also, new vector bundles can be produced by taking elementary transformations centered at a fixed point. Under suitable conditions on degree and rank, these constructions can be carried out globally. While all this processes seem quite elementary, very little is known about the resulting…
We provide a geometric elementary proof of the fact that an analytic plane branch is analytically equivalent to one whose terms corresponding to contacts with holomorphic one-forms -- except for Zariski's $λ$-invariant -- are zero (so called "short parametrizations"). This is the main step missed by Zariski in his attempt to solve the moduli problem.
This largely expository paper first gives an introduction to Hilbert stability and its use in Gieseker's GIT construction of $\overline{M}_g$. Then I review recent work in this area--variants for unpointed curves that arise in Hassett's log minimal model program, starting with Schubert's moduli space of pseudostable curves, and constructions for weighted pointed stable curves and for pointed stable maps due to Swinarski and to Baldwin and Swinarski respectively. The focus is on the steps at which new ideas are needed. Finally, I list open problems in the area, particularly some arising in the …
This informal note provides some elementary examples to motivate the local structural results of [1] on the moduli space of genus one stable maps to projective space. The hope is that these examples will be helpful for graduate students to learn this important subject.
Let $\Bbbk$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Let $\mathrm{Sch}/\Bbbk$ denote the category of schemes of finite type over $\Bbbk$. Let $B$ be a connected projective scheme over $\Bbbk$ and let $\mathcal L$ be an ample line bundle on $B$. Let $τ$ be a Harder-Narasimhan type of length 2, and let $δ\in\mathbb N$. We say a pure sheaf $\mathcal E$ on $B$ is $(τ,δ)$-stable if its Harder-Narasimhan filtration $0=\mathcal E_{\leq 0}\subsetneq\mathcal E_{\leq 1}\subsetneq\mathcal E_{\leq 2}=\mathcal E$ is non-splitting, of type $τ$, with stable subquotients, and $δ=\dim_\Bbbk\mat…
Motivated by constructing moduli spaces of unstable objects, we use new ideas in non-reductive GIT to construct quotients by parabolic group actions. For moduli problems with semistable moduli spaces constructed by reductive GIT, we consider associated instability (or HKKN) stratifications, which are often closed related to Harder-Narasimhan stratifications, and construct quotients of the unstable strata under various stabiliser assumptions by further developing ideas of non-reductive GIT. Our approach is to construct parabolic quotients in stages, in order for the required stabiliser assumpti…
We study the moduli space of triples $(C, L_1, L_2)$ consisting of quartic curves $C$ and lines $L_1$ and $L_2$. Specifically, we construct and compactify the moduli space in two ways: via geometric invariant theory (GIT) and by using the period map of certain lattice polarized $K3$ surfaces. The GIT construction depends on two parameters $t_1$ and $t_2$ which correspond to the choice of a linearization. For $t_1=t_2=1$ we describe the GIT moduli explicitly and relate it to the construction via $K3$ surfaces.
We describe the GIT compactification of the moduli space of cubic fourfolds, with a special emphasis on the role played by singularities. Our main result is that a cubic fourfold with only isolated simple (A-D-E) singularities is GIT stable. Conversely, with some minor exceptions, the stability for cubic fourfolds is characterized by this condition.
We compute the intersection Betti numbers of the GIT model of the moduli space of numerically polarized Enriques surfaces of degree 2. The strategy of the cohomological calculation relies on a general method developed by Kirwan to compute the cohomology of GIT quotients of projective varieties, based on the equivariantly perfect stratification of the unstable points studied by Hesselink and others and a partial resolution of singularities, called Kirwan blow-up.
Looijenga has introduced new compactifications of locally symmetric varieties that give a complete understanding of the period map from the GIT moduli space of plane sextics to the Baily-Borel compactification of the moduli space polarized K3's of degree 2, and also of the period map of cubic fourfolds. On the other hand, the period map of the GIT moduli space of quartic surfaces is significantly more subtle. In our previous paper, we introduced a Hassett-Keel-Looijenga program for certain locally symmetric varieties of Type IV. As a consequence, we gave a complete conjectural decomposition in…
We study the moduli space $\mathcal{F}_{T_1}$ of quasi-trielliptic K3 surfaces of type I, whose general member is a smooth bidegree $(2,3)$-hypersurface of $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^2$. Such moduli space plays an important role in the study of the Hassett-Keel-Looijenga program of the moduli space of degree $8$ quasi-polarized K3 surfaces. In this paper, we consider several natural compactifications of $\mathcal{F}_{T_1}$, such as the GIT compactification and arithmetic compactifications. We give a complete analysis of GIT stability of $(2,3)$-hypersurfaces and provide a concrete descript…
In the present paper we describe new component of the Gieseker-Maruyama moduli space $\mathcal{M}(14)$ of coherent semistable rank-2 sheaves with Chern classes $c_1=0, \ c_2=14, \ c_3=0$ on $\mathbb{P}^{3}$ which is generically non-reduced. The construction of this component is based on the technique of elementary transformations of sheaves and famous Mumford's example of a non-reduced component of the Hilbert scheme of smooth space curves of degree 14 and genus 24.
In this paper, we study rank 2 (quasi) parabolic bundles over the Riemann sphere with an effective divisor and these moduli spaces. First we consider a criterium when a parabolic bundle admits a unramified irregular singular parabolic connection. Second, to give a good compactification of the moduli space of semistable parabolic bundles, we introduce a generalization of parabolic bundles, which is called refined parabolic bundles. Third, we discuss a stability condition of refined parabolic bundles and define elementary transformations of the refined parabolic bundles. Finally, we describe the…
We give a natural family of Bridgeland stability conditions on the derived category of a smooth projective complex surface S and describe ``wall-crossing behavior'' for objects with the same invariants as $\cO_C(H)$ when H generates Pic(S) and $C \in |H|$. If, in addition, S is a K3 or Abelian surface, we use this description to construct a sequence of fine moduli spaces of Bridgeland-stable objects via Mukai flops and generalized elementary modifications of the universal coherent sheaf. We also discover a natural generalization of Thaddeus' stable pairs for curves embedded in the moduli space…
We characterize the image of the period map for cubic fourfolds with at worst simple singularities as the complement of an arrangement of hyperplanes in the period space. It follows then that the GIT compactification of the moduli space of cubic fourfolds is isomorphic to the Looijenga's compactification associated to this arrangement. This work builds on and is a natural continuation of our previous paper on the GIT compactification of the moduli space of cubic fourfolds.
We study moduli spaces of parabolic Higgs bundles on a curve and their dependence on the choice of weights. We describe the chamber structure on the space of weights and show that, when a wall is crossed, the moduli space undergoes an elementary transformation in the sense of Mukai.
Components of the Moduli space of sheaves on a K3 surface are parametrized by a lattice; the (algebraic) Mukai lattice. Isometries of the Mukai lattice often lift to symplectic birational isomorphisms of the collection of components. An example of such a birational isomorphism is the Abel-Jacobi map relating the Hilbert scheme of g points on a K3 of degree 2g-2 to an integrable system: the union of Jacobians of hyperplane sections (curves) of genus g. The main results are: 1) We construct a stratified version of a Mukai elementary transformation modeled after dual pairs of Springer resolutions…
In this, largely expository, note, we show how the simplicial structure of the moduli spaces of stable rational curves with marked points allows to produce explicit equations for these spaces. The key argument is an elementary combinatorial statement about the sets of trees with marked leaves.
We introduce and study smooth compactifications of the moduli space of n labeled points with weights in projective space, which have normal crossings boundary and are defined as GIT quotients of the weighted Fulton-MacPherson compactification. We show that the GIT quotient of a wonderful compactification is also a wonderful compactification under certain hypotheses. We also study a weighted version of the configuration spaces parametrizing n points in affine space up to translation and homothety. In dimension one, the above compactifications are isomorphic to Hassett's moduli space of rational…
The goal of this paper is the study of simple rank 2 parabolic vector bundles over a $2$-punctured elliptic curve $C$. We show that the moduli space of these bundles is a non-separated gluing of two charts isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$. We also showcase a special curve $Γ$ isomorphic to $C$ embedded in this space, and this way we prove a Torelli theorem. This moduli space is related to the moduli space of semistable parabolic bundles over $\mathbb{P}^1$ via a modular map which turns out to be the 2:1 cover ramified in $Γ$. We recover the geometry of del Pezzo surfaces of deg…
We compute the intersection Betti numbers of the GIT model of the moduli space of Brill-Noether-Petri general curves of genus 4. This space was shown to be the final non-trivial log canonical model for the moduli space of stable genus four curves, under the Hassett-Keel program. The strategy of the cohomological computation relies on a general method developed by Kirwan to calculate the cohomology of GIT quotients of projective varieties, based on the equivariantly perfect stratification of the unstable points studied by Hesselink and others and a partial resolution of singularities.
We introduce the concept of strict ample sequence in a fibered triangulated category and define the stability of the objects in a triangulated category. Then we construct the moduli space of (semi) stable objects by GIT construction.
Under some assumptions, we compute the Picard group of moduli of stable sheaves on Abelian surfaces. Considering relative moduli spaces, it is sufficient to consider the moduli of stable sheaves on the product of elliptic curves. By using elementary transformatios (which was used by Friedman to treat rank 2 moduli spaces on elliptic surfaces), we treat this case. We also show that some moduli spaces on P^2 are rational.
We establish a method for calculating the Poincaré series of moduli spaces constructed as quotients of smooth varieties by suitable non-reductive group actions; examples of such moduli spaces include moduli spaces of unstable vector or Higgs bundles on a smooth projective curve, with a Harder-Narasimhan type of length two. To do so, we first prove a result concerning the smoothness of fixed point sets for suitable non-reductive group actions on smooth varieties. This enables us to prove that quotients of smooth varieties by such non-reductive group actions, which can be constructed using Non-R…
In this paper we consider the Brauer groups of algebraic stacks and GIT quotients: the only algebraic stacks we consider in this paper are quotient stacks [X/G], where X is a smooth scheme of finite type over a field k, and G is a linear algebraic group over k and acting on X, as well as various moduli stacks of principal G-bundles on a smooth projective curve X, associated to a reductive group G. We also consider the Brauer groups of the corresponding coarse moduli spaces, which most often identify with the corresponding GIT-quotients. One conclusion that we seem to draw then is that the Brau…
This is the first in a projected series of three papers in which we construct the second flip in the log minimal model program for $\bar{M}_g$. We introduce the notion of a weakly proper algebraic stack, which may be considered as an abstract characterization of those mildly non-separated moduli problems encountered in the context of Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT), and develop techniques for proving that a stack is weakly proper without the usual semistability analysis of GIT. We define a sequence of moduli stacks of curves involving nodes, cusps, tacnodes, and ramphoid cusps, and use the af…
We construct the moduli spaces of stable maps, \bar M_g,n(P^r,d), via geometric invariant theory (GIT). This construction is only valid over Spec C, but a special case is a GIT presentation of the moduli space of stable curves of genus g with n marked points, \bar M_g,n; this is valid over Spec Z. Our method follows that used in the case n=0 by Gieseker to construct \bar M_g, though our proof that the semistable set is nonempty is entirely different.
In these notes, we introduce various approaches (GIT, Hodge theory, and KSBA) to constructing and compactifying moduli spaces. We then discuss the pros and cons for each approach, as well as some connections between them.
After a general discussion of group actions, orbifolds, and "weak orbifolds" this note will provide elementary introductions to two basic moduli spaces over the real or complex numbers: First the moduli space of effective divisors with finite stabilizer on the projective space ${\mathbb P}^1$ modulo the group ${\rm PGL}_2$ of projective transformations of ${\mathbb P}^1$; and then the moduli space of effective 1-cycles with finite stabilizer on ${\mathbb P}^2$ modulo the group ${\rm PGL}_3$ of projective transformations of ${\mathbb P}^2$.
In this paper, we study the moduli space of quasi-polarized complex K3 surfaces of degree 6 and 8 via geometric invariant theory. The general members in such moduli spaces are complete intersections in projective spaces and we have natural GIT constructions for the corresponding moduli spaces and we show that the K3 surfaces with at worst ADE singularities are GIT stable. We give a concrete description of boundary of the compactification of the degree 6 case via the Hilbert-Mumford criterion. We compute the Picard group via Noether-Lefschetz theory and discuss the connection to the Looijenga's…
In this paper we compute the cohomology of moduli space of cubic fourfolds with ADE type singularities relying on Kirwan's blowup and Laza's GIT construction. More precisely, we obtain the Betti numbers of Kirwan's resolution of the moduli space. Furthermore, by applying decomposition theorem we obtain the Betti numbers of the intersection cohomology of Baily-Borel compactification of the moduli space.
The aim of this paper is to determine a bound of the dimension of an irreducible component of the Hilbert scheme of the moduli space of torsion-free sheaves on surfaces. Let $X$ be a non-singular irreducible complex surface and let $E$ be a vector bundle of rank $n$ on $X$. We use the $m$-elementary transformation of $E$ at a point $x \in X$ to show that there exists an embedding from the Grassmannian variety $\mathbb{G}(E_x,m)$ into the moduli space of torsion-free sheaves $\mathfrak{M}_{X,H}(n;c_1,c_2+m)$ which induces an injective morphism from $X \times M_{X,H}(n;c_1,c_2)$ to $Hilb_{\, \ma…
This is an informal set of lecture notes on moduli spaces of curves based on a set of lectures given at the ICTP last summer. It begins at an elementary level and discusses the genus 1 case in detail. The notes then give an informal treatement of Teichmuller space and higher genus moduli spaces. The point of view is generally topological and analytical.
We show that the Hilbert scheme of curves and Le Potier's moduli space of stable pairs with one dimensional support have a common GIT construction. The two spaces correspond to chambers on either side of a wall in the space of GIT linearisations. We explain why this is not enough to prove the "DT/PT wall crossing" conjecture relating the invariants derived from these moduli spaces when the underlying variety is a 3-fold. We then give a gentle introduction to a small part of Joyce's theory for such wall crossings, and use it to give a short proof of an identity relating the Euler characteristic…
We compute the stringy E function of the moduli space of rank 2 bundles over a Riemann surface of genus 3. In doing so, we answer a question of Batyrev about the stringy E functions of the GIT quotients of linear representations.
In this paper we study the moduli stack ${\mathcal U}_{1,n}^{ns}$ of curves of arithmetic genus 1 with n marked points, forming a nonspecial divisor. In arXiv:1511.03797 this stack was realized as the quotient of an explicit scheme $\widetilde{\mathcal U}_{1,n}^{ns}$, affine of finite type over ${\Bbb P}^{n-1}$, by the action of ${\Bbb G}_m^n$ . Our main result is an explicit description of the corresponding GIT semistable loci in $\widetilde{\mathcal U}_{1,n}^{ns}$. This allows us to identify some of the GIT quotients with some of the modular compactifications of ${\mathcal M}_{1,n}$ defined …
We study the GIT quotient of the symplectic grassmannian parametrizing lagrangian subspaces of \bigwedge^3{\mathbb C}^6 by the natural action of SL_6, call it M. This is a compactification of the moduli space of smooth double EPW-sextics. We determine the stable points, the irreducible components of the GIT boundary and their dimensions. There are strong analogies with the moduli space of cubic 4-folds: we prove a result which is analogous to a theorem of Laza stating that cubic 4-folds with simple singularities are stable. Our final goal (not achieved in the present paper) is to understand th…
To every oriented tree, we associate a moduli problem for sheaves over a projective manifold $X$. We define the corresponding notion of semistability and establish the existence of moduli spaces. Applying the results to the tree *->*, we obtain a GIT construction for the moduli space of holomorphic triples of Bradlow and Garcia-Prada.
