This largely expository paper first gives an introduction to Hilbert stability and its use in Gieseker's GIT construction of $\overline{M}_g$. Then I review recent work in this area--variants for unpointed curves that arise in Hassett's log minimal model program, starting with Schubert's moduli space of pseudostable curves, and constructions for weighted pointed stable curves and for pointed stable maps due to Swinarski and to Baldwin and Swinarski respectively. The focus is on the steps at which new ideas are needed. Finally, I list open problems in the area, particularly some arising in the log minimal model program that seem inaccessible to current techniques.
It is known that the main component of the Kontsevich's moduli space of elliptic stable maps is singular. There are two different desingularizations. One is Vakil-Zinger's desingularization and the other is the moduli space of logarithmic stable maps. When the degree is less then or equal to 3 and the target is $\mathbb{P}^{n}$, we show that the moduli space of logarithmic stable maps can be obtained by blowing up Vakil-Zinger's desingularization.
By using Oprea's Bialynicki-Birula decomposition for the stack of genus zero stable maps to flag manifolds. We calculate the Poincaré polynomial of the moduli space in degree one and degree two.
We analyze the relationship between two compactifications of the moduli space of maps from curves to a Grassmannian: the Kontsevich moduli space of stable maps and the Marian--Oprea--Pandharipande moduli space of stable quotients. We construct a moduli space which dominates both the moduli space of stable maps to a Grassmannian and the moduli space of stable quotients, and equip our moduli space with a virtual fundamental class. We relate the virtual fundamental classes of all three moduli spaces using the virtual push-forward formula. This gives a new proof of a theorem of Marian-Oprea-Pandha…
We present a new compactification $M(d,n)$ of the moduli space of self-maps of $\mathbb{CP}^1$ of degree $d$ with $n$ markings. It is constructed via GIT from the stable maps moduli space $\ ar M_{0,n}(\mathbb{CP}^1 \times \mathbb{CP}^1, (1,d))$. We show that it is the coarse moduli space of a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack and we compute its rational Picard group. Using the recursive boundary structure inherited from the stable maps space, we give an explicit algorithm for computing top-intersection numbers of divisors on $M(d,n)$. We also study the $m$-fold iteration map $M(d,n) \dashrightarro…
In this paper we compute the multiple cover Gromov-Witten integrals (analog of the Aspinwall-Morrison formula) for the unramified compactification of the moduli space of stable maps to an embedded $\PO$ in a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ with the normal bundle $\mathcal{O}_{\PO}(-1) \bigoplus \mathcal{O}_{\PO}(-1)$.
We construct a moduli space of stable maps with fields associated to a triple $(X,E,s)$ of a projective variety (or a DM stack with projective moduli space) a vector bundle and a section. We show the class coincides up to a sign with the virtual fundamental class on the moduli space of stable maps to $Z=Z(s)\subset X$. We show that this gives a generalization of the Quantum Lefschetz hyperplane principle. This generalizes similar comparison results of Chang--Li, Kim--Oh and Chang--Li and presents a different approach from Chen--Janda--Webb.
We construct small desingularizations of moduli spaces of semistable quiver representations for indivisible dimension vectors using deformations of stabilites and a dimension estimate for nullcones. We apply this construction to several classes of GIT quotients.
We construct moduli spaces of rational covers of an arbitrary smooth tropical curve in R^r as tropical varieties. They are contained in the balanced fan parametrizing tropical stable maps of the appropriate degree to R^r. The weights of the top-dimensional polyhedra are given in terms of certain lattice indices and local Hurwitz numbers.
Let $X$ be a projective normal toric variety and $T_0$ a rank one subtorus of the defining torus of $X$. We show that the normalization of the Chow quotient $X//T_0$, in the sense of Kapranov-Sturmfels-Zelevinsky, coarsely represents the moduli space of stable log maps to $X$ with discrete data given by $T_0\subset X$.
A Finsler metric, whose holomorphic curvature is bounded from above by a negative constant, is constructed on the moduli stack of canonically polarized manifolds including singularities. Demailly's version of Ahlfors' lemma yields hyperbolicity of the moduli stack.
We discuss the GIT moduli of semistable pairs consisting of a cubic curve and a line on the projective plane. We study in some detail this moduli and compare it with another moduli suggested by Alexeev. It is the moduli of pairs (with no specified semi-abelian action) consisting of a cubic curve with at worst nodal singularities and a line which does not pass through singular points of the cubic curve. Meanwhile, we make a comparison between Nakamura's compactification of the moduli of level three elliptic curves and these two moduli spaces.
This informal note provides some elementary examples to motivate the local structural results of [1] on the moduli space of genus one stable maps to projective space. The hope is that these examples will be helpful for graduate students to learn this important subject.
We use the theory of twisted stable maps to Deligne-Mumford stacks to construct compactifications of the moduli space of pairs $(X \to C, S + F)$ where $X \to C$ is a fibered surface, $S$ is a sum of sections, $F$ is a sum of marked fibers, and $(X, S + F)$ is a stable pair in the sense of the minimal model program. This generalizes the work of Abramovich-Vistoli, who compactified the moduli space of fibered surfaces without marked fibers. Furthermore, we compare our compactification to Alexeev's space of stable maps and the KSBA compactification of stable pairs. As an application, we describe…
The moduli space $\cM_g$ of nonsingular projective curves of genus $g$ is compactified into the moduli $\bcM_g$ of Deligne-Mumford stable curves of genus $g$. We compactify in a similar way the moduli space of abelian varieties by adding some mildly degenerating limits of abelian varieties. A typical case is the moduli space of Hesse cubics. Any Hesse cubic is GIT-stable in the sense that its $\SL(3)$-orbit is closed in the semistable locus, and conversely any GIT-stable planar cubic is one of Hesse cubics. Similarly in arbitrary dimension, the moduli space of abelian varieties is compactified…
In this paper, we present explicit toric construction of moduli space of quasi maps from $\mathbb{P}^1$ with two marked points to $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$, which was first proposed by Jinzenji and prove that it is a compact orbifold. We also determine its Chow ring and compute its Poincaré polynomial for some lower degree cases.
The moduli space of stable maps with divisible ramification uses $r$-th roots of a canonical ramification section to parametrise stable maps whose ramification orders are divisible by a fixed integer $r$. In this article, a virtual fundamental class is constructed while letting domain curves have a positive genus; hence removing the restriction of the domain curves being genus zero. We apply the techniques of virtual localisation and obtain the $r$-ELSV formula as an intersection of the virtual class with a pullback via the branch morphism.
In this paper, we construct toric data of moduli space of quasi maps of degree $d$ from P^{1} with two marked points to weighted projective space P(1.1,1,3). With this result, we prove that the moduli space is a compact toric orbifold. We also determine its Chow ring. Moreover, we give a proof of the conjecture proposed by Jinzenji that a series of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces coincides with expansion coefficients of inverse function of -log(j(tau)).
We introduce and compute the class of a number of effective divisors on the moduli space of stable maps $\bar M_{0,0}(P^{r},d)$, which, for small d, provide a good understanding of the extremal rays and the stable base locus decomposition for the effective cone. We also discuss various birational models that arise in Mori's program, including the Hilbert scheme, the Chow variety, the space of $k$-stable maps, the space of branchcurves and the space of semi-stable sheaves.
This is the first in a pair of papers developing a framework for the application of logarithmic structures in the study of singular curves of genus $1$. We construct a smooth and proper moduli space dominating the main component of Kontsevich's space of stable genus $1$ maps to projective space. A variation on this theme furnishes a modular interpretation for Vakil and Zinger's famous desingularization of the Kontsevich space of maps in genus $1$. Our methods also lead to smooth and proper moduli spaces of pointed genus $1$ quasimaps to projective space. Finally, we present an application to t…
Moduli spaces of stable maps to a smooth projective variety typically have several components. We express the virtual class of the moduli space of genus one stable maps to a smooth projective variety as a sum of virtual classes of the components. The key ingredient is a generalised functoriality result for virtual classes. We show that the natural maps from 'ghost' components of the genus one moduli space to moduli spaces of genus zero stable maps satisfy the strong push forward property. As a consequence, we give a cycle-level formula which relates standard and reduced genus one Gromov--Witte…
Let $X$ be an algebraic variety and let $S$ be a tropical variety associated to $X$. We study the tropicalization map from the moduli space of stable maps into $X$ to the moduli space of tropical curves in $S$. We prove that it is a continuous map and that its image is compact and polyhedral. Loosely speaking, when we deform algebraic curves in $X$, the associated tropical curves in $S$ deform continuously; moreover, the locus of realizable tropical curves inside the space of all tropical curves is compact and polyhedral. Our main tools are Berkovich spaces, formal models, balancing conditions…
This paper studies deformations and birational maps between singular moduli spaces of semistable sheaves with 2-divisible Mukai vectors on K3 surfaces. It is showed that under certain conditions, two such moduli spaces of the same dimension can be connected by deformations and birational maps.
Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g \geq 3$. We give a new description of the theta map for moduli spaces of rank 2 semistable vector bundles with trivial determinant. In orther to do this, we describe a fibration of (a birational model of) the moduli space, whose fibers are GIT quotients $(\mathbb{P}^1)^{2g}//\operatorname{PGL(2)}$. Then, we use recent results of Kumar to identify the restriction of the theta map to these GIT quotients with some explicit osculating projection. As a corollary of this construction, we obtain a birational equivalence between the ramification locus of th…
This is the second in a pair of papers developing a framework to apply logarithmic methods in the study of singular curves of genus $1$. This volume focuses on logarithmic Gromov--Witten theory and tropical geometry. We construct a logarithmically nonsingular moduli space of genus $1$ curves mapping to any toric variety. The space is a birational modification of the principal component of the Abramovich--Chen--Gross--Siebert space of logarithmic stable maps and produces an enumerative genus $1$ curve counting theory. We describe the non-archimedean analytic skeleton of this moduli space and, a…
We perform an intersection theoretic study of the rational map between two different moduli spaces of stable curves which associates to a curve its corresponding Brill-Noether locus (in the case this locus has virtual dimension 1). We then use these results to describe the cone of moving divisors on M_g. Several other applications to moduli spaces of Prym varieties are presented. In a different direction, we prove that the locus in M_g of curves failing to satisfy the Gieseker-Petri theorem is supported in codimension 1 for every possible type of linear series.
We construct the Mumford-Knudsen space of n pointed stable rational curves by a sequence of explicit blow-ups from the GIT quotient (P^1)^n//SL(2) with respect to the symmetric linearization O(1,...,1). The intermediate blown-up spaces turn out to be the moduli spaces of weighted pointed stable curves for suitable ranges of weights. As an application, we provide a new unconditional proof of M. Simpson's Theorem about the log canonical models of the Mumford-Knudsen space. We also give a basis of the Picard group of the moduli spaces of weighted pointed stable curves.
We extend the definition of an m-stable curve introduced by Smyth to the setting of maps to a projective variety X, generalizing the definition of a Kontsevich stable map in genus one. We prove that the moduli problem of n-pointed m-stable genus one maps of class β is representable by a proper Deligne-Mumford stack \sMbar_{1,n}^m(X, β) over Spec Z[1/6]. For X = P^r, we explicitly describe all of the irreducible components of \sMbar_{1,n}(P^r,d) and \sMbar_{1,n}^m(P^r,d), and in particular deduce that \sMbar_{1,n}^m(P^r,d) is irreducible for m >= min(r,d) + n. We show that \sMbar_{1,n}^m(P^r,d)…
We introduce a derived enhancement of the moduli space of sections defined by Chang-Li, and we compute its tangent complex. Special cases of this moduli space include stable maps and stable quasi-maps. As an application, we prove that G-theoretic stable map and quasi-map invariants of projective spaces are equal.
We study constructible invariants of the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}(\boldsymbol{x})$ of stable maps from genus zero curves to $\mathbb{P}^1$, relative to $0$ and $\infty$, with ramification profiles specified by ${\boldsymbol{x}\in \mathbb{Z}^n}$. These spaces are central to the enumerative geometry of $\mathbb{P}^1$, and provide a large family of birational models of the Deligne--Mumford--Knudsen moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$. For the sequence of vectors $\boldsymbol{x}$ corresponding to maps which are maximally ramified over $0$ and unramified over $\infty$, we prove …
Let $C$ be a nonsingular complex projective curve, and $\mathcal{L}$ e a line bundle of degree 1 on $C$. Let $\mathcal{M}_α := \mathcal{M}(r,\mathcal{L},α)$ denote the moduli space of $S$-equivalence classes of Parabolic stable bundles of fixed rank $r$, determinant $\mathcal{L}$, full flags and generic weight $α$. Let $n=$ dim$\mathcal{M}_α$. We aim to study the Abel-Jacobi maps for $\mathcal{M}_α$ in the cases $k=2,n-1$. When $k=n-1$, we prove that the Abel-Jacobi map is a split surjection. When $k=2$ and $r=2$, we show that the Abel-Jacobi map is an isomorphism.
