We study the intersection theory on the moduli spaces of maps of $n$-pointed curves $f:(C,s_1,... s_n)\to V$ which are stable with respect to a weight data $(a_1,..., a_n)$, $0\le a_i\le 1$. After describing the structure of these moduli spaces, we prove a formula describing the way each descendant changes under a wall crossing. As a corollary, we compute the weighted descendants in terms of the usual ones, i.e. for the weight data $(1,...,1)$, and vice versa.
The purpose of this note is introduce a new axiom (called the Descent Axiom) in the theory of $r$-spin cohomological field theories. This axiom explains the origin of gravitational descendants in this theory. Furthermore, the Descent Axiom immediately implies the Vanishing Axiom, explicating the latter (which has no a priori analog in the theory of Gromov-Witten invariants), in terms of the multiplicativity of the virtual class. We prove that the Descent Axiom holds in the convex case, and consequently in genus zero.
This article explores to which extent the algebro-geometric theory of rational descendant Gromov-Witten invariants can be carried over to the tropical world. Despite the fact that the tropical moduli-spaces we work with are non-compact, the answer is surprisingly positive. We discuss the string, divisor and dilaton equations, we prove a splitting lemma describing the intersection with a "boundary" divisor and we prove general tropical versions of the WDVV resp. topological recursion equations (under some assumptions). As a direct application, we prove that the toric varieties $\mathbb{P}^1$, $…
We use the weighted moduli height as defined in \cite{sh-h} to investigate the distribution of fine moduli points in the moduli space of genus two curves. We show that for any genus two curve with equation $y^2=f(x)$, its weighted moduli height $\mathfrak h (\mathfrak{p}) \leq 2^3 \sqrt{3 \cdot 5 \cdot 7} \, \cdot H(f)$, where $H(f)$ is the minimal naive height of the curve as defined in \cite{height}. Based on the weighted moduli height $\mathfrak h$ we create a database of genus two curves defined over $\mathbb Q$ with small $\mathfrak h$ and show that for small such height ($\mathfrak h < 5…
We define tropical Psi-classes on the moduli space of rational tropical curves in R^2 and consider intersection products of Psi-classes and pull-backs of evaluations on this space. We show a certain WDVV equation which is sufficient to prove that tropical numbers of curves satisfying certain Psi- and evaluation conditions are equal to the corresponding classical numbers. We present an algorithm that generalizes Mikhalkin's lattice path algorithm and counts rational plane tropical curves satisfying certain Psi- and evaluation conditions.
We describe weighted projective lines in the sense of Geigle and Lenzing by a moduli problem on the canonical algebra of Ringel. We then go on to study generators of the derived categories of coherent sheaves on the total spaces of their canonical bundles, and show that they are rarely tilting. We also give a moduli construction for these total spaces for weighted projective lines with three orbifold points.
We represent stationary descendant Gromov-Witten invariants of projective space, up to explicit combinatorial factors, by polynomials. One application gives the asymptotic behaviour of large degree behaviour of stationary descendant Gromov-Witten invariants in terms of intersection numbers over the moduli space of curves. We also show that primary Gromov-Witten invariants are "virtual" stationary descendants and hence the string and divisor equations can be understood purely in terms of stationary invariants.
We determine the action of the product of symmetric groups on the cohomology of certain moduli of weighted pointed rational curves. The moduli spaces that we study are of stable rational curves with m+n marked points where the first m marked points are distinct from all the others where as the last n may coincide among themselves. We give a recipe for calculating the equivariant Poincaré polynomials and list them for small m and n.
We introduce a new technique for proving positivity of certain divisor classes on $\bar{M}_{0,n}$ and its weighted variants. Our methods give an unconditional description of the spaces of symmetric weighted pointed rational curves as log canonical models of $\bar{M}_{0,n}$.
We define a new class of holomorphic (n-1)-bundles on the n-dimensional complex projective space, that contains the Tango bundles and their stable Horrock's pull-backs; we show that these bundles are invariant under small deformations and that their isomorphism classes correspond to smooth points of moduli spaces.
We give a recursive algorithm for computing the character of the cohomology of the moduli space $\Mmb_{0,n}$ of stable $n$-pointed genus zero curves as a representation of the symmetric group $\Sg_n$ on $n$ letters. Using the algorithm we can show a formula for the maximum length of this character. Our main tool is connected to the moduli spaces of weighted stable curves introduced by Hassett.
A weighted pointed curve consists of a nodal curve and a sequence of marked smooth points, each assigned a number between zero and one. A subset of the marked points may coincide if the sum of the corresponding weights is no greater than one. We construct moduli spaces for these objects using methods of the log minimal model program, and describe the induced birational morphisms between moduli spaces as the weights are varied. In the genus zero case, we explain the connection to Geometric Invariant Theory quotients of points in the projective line, and to compactifications of moduli spaces stu…
We construct the Mumford-Knudsen space of n pointed stable rational curves by a sequence of explicit blow-ups from the GIT quotient (P^1)^n//SL(2) with respect to the symmetric linearization O(1,...,1). The intermediate blown-up spaces turn out to be the moduli spaces of weighted pointed stable curves for suitable ranges of weights. As an application, we provide a new unconditional proof of M. Simpson's Theorem about the log canonical models of the Mumford-Knudsen space. We also give a basis of the Picard group of the moduli spaces of weighted pointed stable curves.
We give an explicit description of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,2}$ as a weighted blow-up of a weighted projective stack. We use this description to compute the Brauer group of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,2;S}$ over any base scheme $S$ where 6 is invertible, and the integral Chow rings of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,2}$ and $\mathcal{M}_{1,2}$.
Hassett's moduli spaces of weighted stable curves form an important class of alternate modular compactifications of the moduli space of smooth curves with marked points. In this article we define a tropical analogue of these moduli spaces and show that the naive set-theoretic tropicalization map can be identified with a natural deformation retraction onto the non-Archimedean skeleton. This result generalizes work of Abramovich, Caporaso, and Payne treating the Deligne-Knudsen-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of smooth curves with marked points. We also study tropical analogues of t…
Pandharipande-Pixton have used the geometry of the moduli space of stable quotients to produce relations between tautological Chow classes on the moduli space $M_g$ of smooth genus g curves. We study a natural extension of their methods to the boundary and more generally to Hassett's moduli spaces $\overline M_{g, w}$ of stable nodal curves with weighted marked points. Algebraic manipulation of these relations brings them into a Faber-Zagier type form. We show that they give Pixton's generalized FZ relations when all weights are one. As a special case, we give a formulation of FZ relations for…
This is the third paper in a series of work on weighted stable elliptic surfaces - elliptic fibrations with section and marked fibers weighted between zero and one. Motivated by Hassett's weighted pointed stable curves, we use the log minimal model program to construct compact moduli spaces parameterizing these objects. Moreoever, we show that the domain of weights admits a wall and chamber structure, we describe the induced wall crossing morphisms on the moduli spaces as the weight vector varies, and describe the surfaces that appear on the boundary of the moduli space. The main technical res…
Using Kollár's semipositivity results, we produce a number of nef and ample tautological divisors on Hassett's spaces of weighted stable pointed curves. As an application, we prove that Hassett's spaces are log canonical models of Deligne-Mumford spaces of stable pointed curves.
For every fixed genus $g\geq 1$, we consider all quadruples $Q=(w_0,w_1,w_2,d)\in\mathbb{Z}^4_{>0}$ with the property that any smooth degree-$d$ curve embedded in the weighted projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2(w_0,w_1,w_2)$ has genus $g$. We show there are infinitely many quadruples $Q$ satisfying this condition. For every such $Q$, we consider $Z_Q\subseteq M_g$ the locus in the moduli space of all smooth degree-$d$ curves embedded in $\mathbb{P}^2(w_0,w_1,w_2)$. We show that, as $Q$ varies over all these quadruples, there are only finitely many different loci $Z_Q\subseteq M_g$.
We extend B. Hassett's theory of weighted stable pointed curves ([Has03]) to weighted stable maps. The space of stability conditions is described explicitly, and the wall-crossing phenomenon studied. This can be considered as a non-linear analog of the theory of stability conditions in abelian and triangulated categories. We introduce virtual fundamental classes and thus obtain weighted Gromov-Witten invariants. We show that by including gravitational descendants, one obtains an $\LL$-algebra as introduced in [LM04] as a generalization of a cohomological field theory.
We introduce and study smooth compactifications of the moduli space of n labeled points with weights in projective space, which have normal crossings boundary and are defined as GIT quotients of the weighted Fulton-MacPherson compactification. We show that the GIT quotient of a wonderful compactification is also a wonderful compactification under certain hypotheses. We also study a weighted version of the configuration spaces parametrizing n points in affine space up to translation and homothety. In dimension one, the above compactifications are isomorphic to Hassett's moduli space of rational…
Let $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,A[n]}$ be the Hassett moduli stack of weighted stable curves, and let $\overline{M}_{g,A[n]}$ be its coarse moduli space. These are compactifications of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ and $M_{g,n}$ respectively, obtained by assigning rational weights $A = (a_{1},...,a_{n})$, $0< a_{i} \leq 1$ to the markings; they are defined over $\mathbb{Z}$, and therefore over any field. We study the first order infinitesimal deformations of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,A[n]}$ and $\overline{M}_{g,A[n]}$. In particular, we show that $\overline{M}_{0,A[n]}$ is rigid over any field, if $g\ge…
We formulate Virasoro constraints for the generating functions of the intersection numbers on Hassett's moduli of weighted pointed curves and show that they are governed by the KdV integrable hierarchy.
We construct a smooth Artin stack parameterizing the stable weighted curves of genus one with twisted fields and prove that it is isomorphic to the blowup stack of the moduli of genus one weighted curves studied by Hu and Li. This leads to a blowup-free construction of Vakil-Zinger's desingularization of the moduli of genus one stable maps to projective spaces. This construction provides the cornerstone of the theory of stacks with twisted fields, which is thoroughly studied in arXiv:2005.03384 and leads to a blowup-free resolution of the stable map moduli of genus two.
We study moduli spaces of rational weighted stable tropical curves, and their connections with the classical Hassett spaces. Given a vector w of weights, the moduli space of tropical w-stable curves can be given the structure of a balanced fan if and only if w has only heavy and light entries. In this case, we can express the moduli space as the Bergman fan of a graphic matroid. Furthermore, we realize the tropical moduli space as a geometric tropicalization, and as a Berkovich skeleton, of the classical moduli space. This builds on previous work of Tevelev, Gibney--Maclagan, and Abramovich--C…
We study the moduli space of genus 3 hyperelliptic curves via the weighted projective space of binary octavics. This enables us to create a database of all genus 3 hyperelliptic curves defined over $\mathbb Q$, of weighted moduli height $\mathcal h =1$.
Here I give a direct proof that smooth curves with distinct marked points are asymptotically Hilbert stable with respect to a wide range of parameter spaces and linearizations. This result can be used to construct the coarse moduli space of Deligne-Mumford stable pointed curves \bar M_g,n and Hassett's moduli spaces of weighted pointed curves \bar M_g,A (though the full construction of the moduli spaces is not contained in this paper, only the stability proof). My proof follows Gieseker's approach to reduce to the GIT problem to a combinatorial problem, though the solution is very different. T…
The moduli space $\bar{M}_A$ of weighted pointed stable curves of genus zero is stratified according to the degeneration types of such curves. We show that the homology groups of the moduli space $\bar{M}_A$ are generated by the strata of $\bar{M}_A$ and give all additive relations between them. We also observe that the Chow groups $A_i \bar{M}_A$ and the homology groups $H_{2i} \bar{M}_A$ are isomorphic. This generalizes Kontsevich-Manin's and Losev-Manin's theorems to arbitrary weight data $A$.
We give a definition of tropical orbit spaces and their morphisms. We show that, under certain conditions, the weighted number of preimages of a point in the target of such a morphism does not depend on the choice of this point. We equip the moduli spaces of elliptic tropical curves with a structure of tropical orbit space and, using our results on tropical orbit spaces, simplify the known proof of the fact that the weighted number of plane elliptic tropical curves of degree d with fixed j-invariant which pass through 3d-1 points in general position in $\RR^2$ is independent of the choice of a…
We show that closed subsets of the character variety of a complex variety with negatively weighted homology, which are $p$-adically integral and Galois invariant, are motivic. Final version: Cambridge Journal of Mathematics
We run Mori's program for the moduli space of pointed stable rational curves with divisor $K +\sum a_{i}ψ_{i}$. We prove that, without assuming the F-conjecture, the birational model for the pair is the Hassett's moduli space of weighted pointed stable rational curves, without any modification of weight coefficients.
We show that the moduli space of semi-stable sheaves on a smooth quadric surface, having dimension 1, multiplicity 4, Euler characteristic 2, and first Chern class (2, 2), is the blow-up at two points of a certain hypersurface in a weighted projective space.
We study how changing the weight datum $\mathcal{A}=(a_1,...,a_n)\in(\mathbb{Q}\cap(0,1])^n$ affects the topology of tropical moduli spaces $M_{g,\mathcal{A}}^{trop}$, $\overline{M}_{g,\mathcal{A}}^{trop}$ and $Δ_{g,\mathcal{A}}$ and the homology of the latter one. We show that for fixed $g$ and $n$, there are particular filtrations of these topological spaces which we can use to compute the reduced rational homology of $Δ_{g,\mathcal{A}}$ and the top weight cohomology of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g,\mathcal{A}}$ of smooth $(g,\mathcal{A})$-stable algebraic curves.
We show the compactly supported motive of the moduli stack of degree $n$ rational curves on the weighted projective stack $\mathcal{P}(a,b)$ is of mixed Tate type over any base field $K$ with $\text{char}(K) \nmid a,b$ and has class $\mathbb{L}^{(a+b)n+1}-\mathbb{L}^{(a+b)n-1}$ in the Grothendieck ring of stacks. In particular, this improves upon the result of [HP] regarding the arithmetic invariant of the moduli stack $\mathcal{L}_{1,12n} := \mathrm{Hom}_{n}(\mathbb{P}^1, \overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,1})$ of stable elliptic fibrations over $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ with $12n$ nodal singular fibers and a …
The Hessian of a general cubic surface is a nodal quartic surface, hence its desingularisation is a K3 surface. We determine the transcendental lattice of the Hessian K3 surface for various cubic surfaces (with nodes and/or Eckardt points for example). Classical invariant theory shows that the moduli space of cubic surfaces is a weighted projective space. We describe the singular locus and some other subvarieties of the moduli space.
This note outlines the realizable extension problem for weighted graphs and provides results of a detailed analysis of this problem for the weighted graph $(K_{3,3},l)$. This analysis is then utilized to provide a result relating to the connectedness of the moduli space of planar realizations of $(K_{3,3},l)$. The note culminates with two examples which show that in general, realizability and connectedness results relating to the moduli spaces of weighted cycles which are contained in a larger weighted graph cannot be extended to similar results regarding the moduli space of the larger weighte…
Given integers $g \geq 0$, $n \geq 1$, and a vector $w \in (\mathbb{Q} \cap (0, 1])^n$ such that ${2g - 2 + \sum w_i > 0}$, we study the topology of the moduli space $Δ_{g, w}$ of $w$-stable tropical curves of genus $g$ with volume 1. The space $Δ_{g, w}$ is the dual complex of the divisor of singular curves in Hassett's moduli space of $w$-stable genus $g$ curves $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g, w}$. When $g \geq 1$, we show that $Δ_{g, w}$ is simply connected for all values of $w$. We also give a formula for the Euler characteristic of $Δ_{g, w}$ in terms of the combinatorics of $w$.
We introduce a compact moduli of noncommutative quadrics, and show that it is the weighted projective space of weight (2,4,4,6). We also introduce a compact moduli of potentials for the conifold quiver, and show that it is the weighted projective space of weight (1,2,3,4). There is a natural morphism from the latter to the former, which is finite of degree 4.
We construct the moduli space for equivalence classes of n-pointed tropical curves of genus g, together with its compactification given by weighted tropical curves, and establish some of its basic topological properties. We compare it to the moduli spaces of smooth and stable algebraic curves, from the combinatorial, the topological, and the Teichmüller point of view. The paper is written in an expository style, and it generalizes some results contained in sections 4-6 of arXiv:1001.2815v3.
We study the log canonical models of the moduli space MBar_{0,n} of pointed stable genus zero curves with respect to the standard log canonical divisors K+aD, where D denotes the boundary. In particular we show that, as a formal consequence of a conjecture by Fulton regarding the ample cone of MBar_{0,n}, these log canonical models are equal to certain of Hassett's weighted pointed curve spaces.
We study a compactification of the configuration space of n distinct labeled points on an arbitrary nonsingular variety. Our construction provides a generalization of the original Fulton-MacPherson compactification that is parallel to the generalization of the moduli space of n-pointed stable curves carried out by Hassett.
The invariants of rank 2 Joyce-Song semistable pairs over a Calabi-Yau threefold were computed in arXiv:1101.2252, using the wall-crossing formula of Joyce-Song and Kontsevich-Soibelman. Such wall-crossing computations often depend on the combinatorial properties of certain elements of a Hall-algebra (these are the stack functions defined by Joyce). These combinatorial computations become immediately complicated and hard to carry out, when studying higher rank stable pairs with rank$>2$. The main purpose of this article is to introduce an independent approach to computation of rank 2 stable pa…
We prove that, assuming the F-conjecture, the log canonical model of the pair $(\bar{M}_{0,n}, \sum a_i ψ_i)$ is the Hassett's moduli space of weighted pointed stable rational curves without any modification of weight coefficients. For the boundary weight cases, we prove that the birational model is the GIT quotient of the product of the projective lines. This is a generalization of Simpson's theorem for symmetric weight cases.
In this note we extend the concept height on projective spaces to that of weighted height on weighted projective spaces and show how such a height can be computed. We prove some of the basic properties of the weighted height and show how it can be used to study hyperelliptic curves over Q. Some examples are provided from the weighted moduli space of binary sextics and octavics.
We prove that Donaldson-Thomas type invariants are equal to weighted Euler characteristics of their moduli spaces. In particular, such invariants depend only on the scheme structure of the moduli space, not the symmetric obstruction theory used to define them. We also introduce new invariants generalizing Donaldson-Thomas type invariants to moduli problems with open moduli space. These are useful for computing Donaldson-Thomas type invariants over stratifications.
We introduce a new moduli stack, called the Serre stable moduli stack, which corresponds to studying families of point objects in an abelian category with a Serre functor. This allows us in particular, to re-interpret the classical derived equivalence between most concealed-canonical algebras and weighted projective lines by showing they are induced by the universal sheaf on the Serre stable moduli stack. We explain why the method works by showing that the Serre stable moduli stack is the tautological moduli problem that allows one to recover certain nice stacks such as weighted projective lin…
We construct a two-level weighted TQFT whose structure coefficents are equivariant intersection numbers on moduli spaces of admissible covers. Such a structure is parallel (and strictly related) to the local Gromov-Witten theory of curves of Bryan-Pandharipande. We compute explicitly the theory using techniques of localization on moduli spaces of admissible covers of a parametrized projective line. The Frobenius Algebras we obtain are one parameter deformations of the class algebra of the symmetric group S_d. In certain special cases we are able to produce explicit closed formulas for such def…
Hassett constructed a class of modular compactifications of the moduli space of pointed curves by adding weights to the marked points. This leads to a natural wall and chamber decomposition of the domain of admissible weights where the moduli space and universal family remain constant inside a chamber, and may change upon crossing a wall. The goal of this paper is to count the number of chambers in this decomposition. We relate these chambers to a class of boolean functions known as linear threshold functions (LTFs), and discover a subclass of LTFs which are in bijection with the chambers. Usi…
In this paper, we construct toric data of moduli space of quasi maps of degree $d$ from P^{1} with two marked points to weighted projective space P(1.1,1,3). With this result, we prove that the moduli space is a compact toric orbifold. We also determine its Chow ring. Moreover, we give a proof of the conjecture proposed by Jinzenji that a series of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces coincides with expansion coefficients of inverse function of -log(j(tau)).
The moduli space $Δ_{g,w}$ of tropical $w$-weighted stable curves of volume $1$ is naturally identified with the dual complex of the divisor of singular curves in Hassett's spaces of $w$-weighted stable curves. If at least two of the weights are $1$, we prove that $Δ_{0,w}$ is homotopic to a wedge sum of spheres, possibly of varying dimensions. Under additional natural hypotheses on the weight vector, we establish explicit formulas for the Betti numbers of the spaces. We exhibit infinite families of weights for which the space $Δ_{0,w}$ is disconnected and for which the fundamental group of $Δ…
We use tropical and nonarchimedean geometry to study the moduli space of genus $0$ stable maps to $\mathbb{P}^1$ relative to two points. This space is exhibited as a tropical compactification in a toric variety. Moreover, the fan of this toric variety may be interpreted as a moduli space for tropical relative stable maps with the same discrete data. As a consequence, we confirm an expectation of Bertram and the first two authors, that the tropical Hurwitz cycles are tropicalizations of classical Hurwitz cycles. As a second application, we obtain a full descendant correspondence for genus $0$ r…
In this note we extend the dimension theory for the spaces $\widetilde{\mathcal H}_g^k(μ)$ of twisted $k$-differentials defined by Farkas and Pandharipande in [FP15] to the case $k>1$. In particular, we show that the intersection $\widetilde{\mathcal H}_g^k(μ) \cap \mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ is a union of smooth components of the expected dimensions for all $k\geq 0$. We also extend a conjectural formula from [FP15] for a weighted fundamental class of $\widetilde{\mathcal H}_g^k(μ)$ and provide evidence in low genus.
