We study Fourier-Mukai transforms for smooth projective varieties whose canonical bundles have finite order, and relate them to equivariant transforms on certain finite covering spaces. Our results lead to new equivalences of derived categories for Enriques and bielliptic surfaces.
This note is an answer to a problem proposed by Ranestad and Iliev. We prove that the projection of general nodal linear sections of suitable dimension of the Mukai varieties $M_g$ are linear sections of $M_{g-1}$.
We construct an explicit complex smooth Fano threefold with Picard number 1, index 1, and degree 10 (also known as a Gushel-Mukai threefold) and prove that it is not rational by showing that its intermediate Jacobian has a faithful $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbf{F}_{11}) $-action. Along the way, we construct Gushel-Mukai varieties of various dimensions with rather large (finite) automorphism groups. The starting point of all these constructions is an Eisenbud-Popescu-Walter sextic with a faithful $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbf{F}_{11}) $-action discovered by the second author in 2013.
We describe the moduli stack of Gushel-Mukai varieties as a global quotient stack and its coarse moduli space as the corresponding GIT quotient. The construction is based on a comprehensive study of the relation between this stack and the stack of Lagrangian data; roughly speaking, we show that the former is a generalized root stack of the latter. As an application, we define the period map for Gushel-Mukai varieties and construct some complete nonisotrivial families of smooth Gushel-Mukai varieties. In an appendix, we describe a generalization of the root stack construction used in our approa…
We perform a systematic study of Gushel-Mukai varieties---quadratic sections of linear sections of cones over the Grassmannian Gr(2,5). This class of varieties includes Clifford general curves of genus 6, Brill-Noether general polarized K3 surfaces of genus 6, prime Fano threefolds of genus 6, and their higher-dimensional analogues. We establish an intrinsic characterization of normal Gushel-Mukai varieties in terms of their excess conormal sheaves, which leads to a new proof of the classification theorem of Gushel and Mukai. We give a description of isomorphism classes of Gushel-Mukai varieti…
We study the Fourier-Mukai functor D(Y) -> D(X) induced by the universal family on a fine moduli space Y for simple semihomogeneous vector bundles on an abelian variety X. The main result is that the Fourier-Mukai transform of a very negative line bundle on Y is ample if and only if the bundles parametrized by Y are nef.
Mukai varieties are Fano varieties of Picard number one and coindex three. In genus seven to ten they are linear sections of some special homogeneous varieties. We describe the generic automorphism groups of these varieties. When they are expected to be trivial for dimensional reasons, we show they are indeed trivial, up to three interesting and unexpected exceptions in genera 7, 8, 9, and codimension 4, 3, 2 respectively. We conclude in particular that a generic prime Fano threefold of genus g has no automorphisms for 7 $\le$ g $\le$ 10. In the Appendix by Y. Prokhorov, the latter statement i…
We associate to any complete spherical variety $X$ a certain nonnegative rational number $\wp(X)$, which we conjecture to satisfy the inequality $\wp(X) \le \operatorname{dim} X - \operatorname{rank} X$ with equality holding if and only if $X$ is isomorphic to a toric variety. We show that, for spherical varieties, our conjecture implies the generalized Mukai conjecture on the pseudo-index of smooth Fano varieties due to Bonavero, Casagrande, Debarre, and Druel. We also deduce from our conjecture a smoothness criterion for spherical varieties. It follows from the work of Pasquier that our conj…
Let X be a Fano variety of dimension n, pseudoindex i_X and Picard number ρ_X. A generalization of a conjecture of Mukai says that ρ_X(i_X-1)\le n. We prove that the conjecture holds if: a) X has pseudoindex i_X \ge \frac{n+3}{3} and either has a fiber type extremal contraction or does not have small extremal contractions b) X has dimension five.
We discuss birational properties of Mukai varieties, i.e., of higher-dimensional analogues of prime Fano threefolds of genus $g \in \{7,8,9,10\}$ over an arbitrary field $\mathsf{k}$ of zero characteristic. In the case of dimension $n \ge 4$ we prove that these varieties are $\mathsf{k}$-rational if and only if they have a $\mathsf{k}$-point except for the case of genus $9$, where we assume $n \ge 5$. Furthermore, we prove that Mukai varieties of genus $g \in \{7,8,9,10\}$ and dimension $n \ge 5$ contain cylinders if they have a $\mathsf{k}$-point. Finally, we prove that the embedding $X \hook…
We study the derived categories of coherent sheaves on Gushel-Mukai varieties. In the derived category of such a variety, we isolate a special semiorthogonal component, which is a K3 or Enriques category according to whether the dimension of the variety is even or odd. We analyze the basic properties of this category using Hochschild homology, Hochschild cohomology, and the Grothendieck group. We study the K3 category of a Gushel-Mukai fourfold in more detail. Namely, we show that this category is equivalent to the derived category of a K3 surface for a certain codimension 1 family of rational…
We will discuss the Fourier-Mukai partners of a given abelian variety. The first part of the note is to give some basic theory of Fourier-Mukai partners and semi-homogenous vector bundles, then we will discuss the case when the kernel of an equivalence is given by a semi-homogenous vector bundle. In particular, given an abelian variety B, and a simple semi-homogenous vector bundle E on B, we will discuss for which E, it can be the image of the structure sheaf of the unit on A under some triangulated equivalence, where A is some abelian variety.
A Mukai variety is a Fano n-fold of index n-2. In this paper we study the fundamental divisor of a Mukai variety with at worst log terminal singularities. The main result is a complete classification of log terminal Mukai varieties which have not good divisors, examples of "bad" varieties are given. In such a way we also give a shorter proof of Mukai Conjecture, solved in our previous paper alg-geom/9611024.
This article is based on a talk given at the Kinosaki Symposium on Algebraic Geometry in 2015, about a work in progress. We describe a polarization on a derived equivalent abelian variety by using Fourier-Mukai theory. We explicitly formulate a conjecture which says certain Fourier-Mukai transforms between derived categories give equivalences of some hearts of Bridgeland stability conditions. We establish it for abelian surfaces, which is already known due to D. Huybrechts, and for abelian 3-folds. This generalizes the author's previous joint work with A. Maciocia on principally polarized abel…
We study the Fourier-Mukai transform for holonomic D-modules on complex abelian varieties. Among other things, we show that the cohomology support loci of a holonomic D-module are finite unions of linear subvarieties, which go through points of finite order for objects of geometric origin; that the standard t-structure on the derived category of holonomic complexes corresponds, under the Fourier-Mukai transform, to a certain perverse coherent t-structure in the sense of Kashiwara and Arinkin-Bezrukavnikov; and that Fourier-Mukai transforms of simple holonomic D-modules are intersection complex…
Beauville and Donagi proved in 1985 that the primitive middle cohomology of a smooth complex cubic fourfold and the primitive second cohomology of its variety of lines, a smooth hyperkähler fourfold, are isomorphic as polarized integral Hodge structures. We prove analogous statements for smooth complex Gushel-Mukai varieties of dimension 4 (resp. 6), i.e., smooth dimensionally transverse intersections of the cone over the Grassmannian Gr(2,5), a quadric, and two hyperplanes (resp. of the cone over Gr(2,5) and a quadric). The associated hyperkähler fourfold is in both cases a smooth double cove…
I give three descriptions of the Mukai flop of type $E\_{6,I}$, one in terms of Jordan algebras, one in terms of projective geometry over the octonions, and one in terms of O-blow-ups. Each description shows that it is very similar to certain flops of type $A$. The Mukai flop of type $E\_{6,II}$ is also described.
Due to a theorem by Orlov every exact fully faithful functor between the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties is of Fourier-Mukai type. We extend this result to the case of bounded derived categories of twisted coherent sheaves and at the same time we weaken the hypotheses on the functor. As an application we get a complete description of the exact functors between the abelian categories of twisted coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties.
We provide a stable rationality construction for some smooth complex Gushel-Mukai varieties of dimension 6. As a consequence, we compute the integral singular cohomology of any smooth Gushel-Mukai sixfold and in particular, show that it is torsion-free.
Given a Fourier-Mukai transform $Φ$ between the bounded derived categories of two smooth projective curves, we verifiy that the induced map between the Jacobian varieties preserves the principal polarization if and only if $Φ$ is an equivalence.
We introduce the notion of Mukai regularity (M-regularity) for coherent sheaves on abelian varieties. The definition is based on the Fourier-Mukai transform, and in a special case depending on the choice of a polarization it parallels and strenghtens the usual Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. Mukai regularity has a large number of applications, ranging from basic properties of linear series on abelian varieties and defining equations for their subvarieties, to higher dimensional type statements and to a study of special classes of vector bundles. Some of these applications are explained here, w…
This paper surveys some recent results about Fourier--Mukai functors. In particular, given an exact functor between the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on two smooth projective varieties, we deal with the question whether this functor is of Fourier--Mukai type. Several related questions are answered and many open problems are stated.
The paper sets out a generalized framework for Fourier-Mukai transforms and illustrates their use via vector bundle transforms. A Fourier-Mukai transform is, roughly, an isomorphism of derived categories of (sheaves) on smooth varieties X and Y. We show that these can only exist if the first Chern class of the varieties vanishes and, in the case of vector bundle transforms, will exist if and only if there is a bi-universal bundle on XxY which is "strongly simple" in a suitable sense. Some applications are given to abelian varieties extending the work of Mukai.
Orlov's famous representability theorem asserts that any fully faithful exact functor between the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties is a Fourier-Mukai functor. In this paper we show that this result is false without the full faithfulness hypothesis.
We propose a slightly modified definition for the Fourier-Mukai transform (on abelian varieties) that makes it much easier to remember various formulas. As an application, we give relatively short proofs for two important theorems: the characterization of GV-sheaves in terms of vanishing, due to Hacon; and fact that M-regularity implies (continuous) global generation, due to Pareschi and Popa.
We use A_{infinity}-formalism to study variation of cohomology spaces under formal deformations of coherent sheaves on projective varieties. As an application we describe formal neighborhoods of twisted Brill-Noether loci at some points. Another application is a computation of the Fourier-Mukai transform of some natural line bundles on symmetric powers of a curve.
Let $X$ and $Y$ be smooth projective varieties over $\C$. We say that $X$ and $Y$ are \emph{D-equivalent} (or, $X$ is a \emph{Fourier--Mukai partner} of $Y$) if their derived categories of bounded complexes of coherent sheaves are equivalent as triangulated categories. The aim of this short note is to find an example of mutually D-equivalent but not isomorphic relatively minimal elliptic surfaces.
This is a survey of M-regularity for coherent sheaves on abelian varieties and its applications, based on lectures given by the second author at the Seattle conference, in August 2005, and at the Luminy GAC workshop in October 2005. Section 3 contains some brief indications of upcoming work.
We study the Fourier-Mukai transform for holonomic D-modules on a complex abelian variety. Among other things, we show that the cohomology support loci of a holonomic complex are finite unions of translates of triple tori, the translates being by torsion points for objects of geometric origin; and that the standard t-structure on the derived category of holonomic complexes corresponds, under the Fourier-Mukai transform, to a certain perverse coherent t-structure in the sense of Kashiwara and Arinkin-Bezrukavnikov.
In this paper, we discuss the problem of whether the difference $[X]-[Y]$ of the classes of a Fourier--Mukai pair $(X, Y)$ of smooth projective varieties in the Grothendieck ring of varieties is annihilated by some power of the class $\mathbb{L} = [ \mathbb{A}^1 ]$ of the affine line. We give an affirmative answer for Fourier--Mukai pairs of very general K3 surfaces of degree 12. On the other hand, we prove that in each dimension greater than one, there exists an abelian variety such that the difference with its dual is not annihilated by any power of $\mathbb{L}$, thereby giving a negative an…
We study the intersection theory of complex Lagrangian subvarieties inside holomorphic symplectic manifolds. In particular, we study their behaviour under Mukai flops and give a rigorous proof of the Plücker type formula for Legendre dual subvarieties written down by the second author before. Then we apply the formula to study projective dual varieties in projective spaces.
We prove that the canonical cover of an Enriques surface does not admit non-trivial Fourier-Mukai partners. We also show that the canonical cover of a bielliptic surface has at most one non-isomorphic Fourier-Mukai partner. The first result is then applied to birational Hilbert schemes of points and the second to birational generalised Kummer varieties. An appendix establishes that there are no exceptional or spherical objects in the derived category of a bielliptic surface.
We investigate a construction providing pairs of Calabi-Yau varieties described as zero loci of pushforwards of a hyperplane section on a roof as described by Kanemitsu. We discuss the implications of such construction at the level of Hodge equivalence, derived equivalence and $\mathbb L$-equivalence. For the case of $K3$ surfaces, we provide alternative interpretations for the Fourier-Mukai duality in the family of $K3$ surfaces of degree 12 of Mukai. In all these constructions the derived equivalence lifts to an equivalence of matrix factorizations categories.
A theorem by Orlov states that any equivalence between the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves of two smooth projective varieties, X and Y, is isomorphic to a Fourier-Mukai transform with kernel in the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves of the product XxY. In the case of an exact functor which is not necessarily fully faithful, we compute some sheaves that play the role of the cohomology sheaves of the kernel, and that are isomorphic to the latter whenever an isomorphism to a Fourier-Mukai transform exists. We then exhibit a class of functors that are not full or faithful …
A $K$-equivalent map between two smooth projective varieties is called simple if the map is resolved in both sides by single smooth blow-ups. In this paper, we will provide a structure theorem of simple $K$-equivalent maps, which reduces the study of such maps to that of special Fano manifolds. As applications of the structure theorem, we provide examples of simple $K$-equivalent maps, and classify such maps in several cases, including the case of dimension at most $8$.
Orlov's famous representability theorem asserts that any fully faithful functor between the derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties is a Fourier-Mukai functor. This result has been extended by Lunts and Orlov to include functors from perfect complexes to quasi-coherent complexes. In this paper we show that the latter extension is false without the full faithfulness hypothesis. Our results are based on the properties of scalar extensions of derived categories, whose investigation was started by Pawel Sosna and the first author.
