Given a self-adjoint operator H, a self-adjoint trace class operator V and a fixed Hilbert-Schmidt operator F with trivial kernel and co-kernel, using limiting absorption principle an explicit set of full Lebesgue measure is defined such that for all points of this set the wave and the scattering matrices can be defined and constructed unambiguously. Many well-known properties of the wave and scattering matrices and operators are proved, including the stationary formula for the scattering matrix. This new abstract scattering theory allows to prove that for any trace class perturbations of arbitrary self-adjoint operators the singular part of the spectral shift function is an almost everywhere integer-valued function.
We prove for the square Fibonacci Hamiltonian that the density of states measure is absolutely continuous for almost all pairs of small coupling constants. This is obtained from a new result we establish about the absolute continuity of convolutions of measures arising in hyperbolic dynamics with exact-dimensional measures.
We analyze the spectrum of the generalized Schrodinger operator in $L^2(R^ν) ν\geq 2$, with a general local, rotationally invariant singular interaction supported by an infinite family of concentric, equidistantly spaced spheres. It is shown that the essential spectrum consists of interlaced segments of the dense point and absolutely continuous character, and that the relation of their lengths at high energies depends on the choice of the interaction parameters; generically the p.p. component is asymptotically dominant. We also show that for $ν=2$ there is an infinite family of eigenvalues bel…
We prove sharp estimates on the time-average behavior of the squared absolute value of the Fourier transform of some absolutely continuous measures that may have power-law singularities, in the sense that their Radon-Nikodym derivatives diverge with a power-law order. We also discuss an application to spectral measures of finite-rank perturbations of the discrete Laplacian.
We prove several new results on the absolutely continuous spectra of perturbed one-dimensional Stark operators. First, we find new classes of perturbations, characterized mainly by smoothness conditions, which preserve purely absolutely continuous spectrum. Then we establish stability of the absolutely continuous spectrum in more general situations, where imbedded singular spectrum may occur. We present two kinds of optimal conditions for the stability of absolutely continuous spectrum: decay and smoothness. In the decay direction, we show that a sufficient (in the power scale) condition is $|…
We show that a generic quasi-periodic Schrödinger operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ has purely singular spectrum. That is, for any minimal translation flow on a finite-dimensional torus, there is a residual set of continuous sampling functions such that for each of these sampling functions, the Schrödinger operator with the resulting potential has empty absolutely continuous spectrum.
This paper deals with general structural properties of one-dimensional Schr"odinger operators with some absolutely continuous spectrum. The basic result says that the omega limit points of the potential under the shift map are reflectionless on the support of the absolutely continuous part of the spectral measure. This implies an Oracle Theorem for such potentials and Denisov-Rakhmanov type theorems. In the discrete case, for Jacobi operators, these issues were discussed in my recent paper [19]. The treatment of the continuous case in the present paper depends on the same basic ideas.
We prove several results showing that absolutely continuous spectrum for the Laplacian on radial trees is a rare event. In particular, we show that metric trees with unbounded edges have purely singular spectrum and that generically (in the sense of Baire) radial trees have purely singular continuous spectrum.
We extend in this work the Jitomirskaya-Last inequality and Last-Simoncriterion for the absolutely continuous spectral component of a half-line Schrödinger operator to the special class of matrix-valued Jacobi operators $H:l^2(\mathbb{Z},\mathbb{C})\rightarrow l^2(\mathbb{Z},\mathbb{C})$ given by the law $[H \textbf{u}]_{n} := D_{n - 1} \textbf{u}_{n - 1} + D_{n} \textbf{u}_{n + 1} + V_{n} \textbf{u}_{n}$, where $(D_n)_n$ and $(V_n)_n$ are bilateral sequences of $l\times l$ self-adjoint matrices such that $0<\inf_{n\in\mathbb{Z}}s_l[D_n]\le\sup_{n\in\mathbb{Z}}s_1[D_n]<\infty$ (here, $s_k[A]$ …
We construct Riemannian manifolds with singular continuous spectrum embedded in the absolutely continuous spectrum of the Laplacian. Our manifolds are asymptotically hyperbolic with sharp curvature bounds.
We consider Schrödinger operator in dimension $d\ge 2$ with a singular interaction supported by an infinite family of concentric spheres, analogous to a system studied by Hempel and coauthors for regular potentials. The essential spectrum covers a halfline determined by the appropriate one-dimensional comparison operator; it is dense pure point in the gaps of the latter. If the interaction is radially periodic, there are absolutely continuous bands; in contrast to the regular case the measure of the p.p. segments does not vanish in the high-energy limit.
We consider a family of one frequency discrete analytic quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators which appear in [Bjer]. We show that this family provides an example of coexistence of absolutely continuous and point spectrum for some parameters as well as coexistence of absolutely continuous and singular continuous spectrum for some other parameters.
The structure of the spectrum of random operators is studied. It is shown that if the density of states measure of some subsets of the spectrum is zero, then these subsets are empty. In particular follows that absolute continuity of the IDS implies singular spectra of ergodic operators is either empty or of positive measure. Our results apply to Anderson and alloy type models, perturbed Landau Hamiltonians, almost periodic potentials and models which are not ergodic.
The spectral analysis of the dissipative linear transport (Boltzmann) operator with polynomial collision integral by the Szokefalvi-Nagy - Foias functional model is given. An exact estimate for the reminder in the asymptotic of the corresponding evolution semigroup is proved in the isotropic case. In the general case, it is shown that the operator has finitely many eigenvalues and spectral singularities and an absolutely continuous essential spectrum, and an upper estimate for the reminder is established.
We consider Schödinger operators on the half-line, both discrete and continuous, and show that the absence of bound states implies the absence of embedded singular spectrum. More precisely, in the discrete case we prove that if $Δ+ V$ has no spectrum outside of the interval $[-2,2]$, then it has purely absolutely continuous spectrum. In the continuum case we show that if both $-Δ+ V$ and $-Δ- V$ have no spectrum outside $[0,\infty)$, then both operators are purely absolutely continuous. These results extend to operators with finitely many bound states.
Particle models with finitely many types of particles are considered, both on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and on discrete point sets of finite local complexity. Such sets include many standard examples of aperiodic order such as model sets or certain substitution systems. The particle gas is defined by an interaction potential and a corresponding Gibbs measure. Under some reasonable conditions on the underlying point set and the potential, we show that the corresponding diffraction measure almost surely exists and consists of a pure point part and an absolutely continuous part with continuous density. In p…
The subject of this work are random Schroedinger operators on regular rooted tree graphs $\T$ with stochastically homogeneous disorder. The operators are of the form $H_λ(ω) = T + U + λV(ω)$ acting in $\ell^2(\T)$, with $T $ the adjacency matrix, $U$ a radially periodic potential, and $V(ω)$ a random potential. This includes the only class of homogeneously random operators for which it was proven that the spectrum of $H_λ(ω)$ exhibits an absolutely continuous (ac) component; a results established by A. Klein for weak disorder, in case U=0 and $V(ω)$ given by iid random variables on $\T$. Our m…
We consider disordered Hamiltonians given by the Laplace operator subject to arbitrary random self-adjoint singular perturbations supported on random discrete subsets of the real line. Under minimal assumptions on the type of disorder, we prove the following dichotomy: Either every realization of the random operator has purely absolutely continuous spectrum or spectral and exponential dynamical localization hold. In particular, we establish Anderson localization for Schrödinger operators with Bernoulli-type random singular potential and singular density.
In this paper I prove existence of an irreducible pair of operators $H$ and $H+V,$ where $H$ is a self-adjoint operator and $V$ is a self-adjoint trace-class operator, such that the singular spectral shift function of the pair is non-zero on the absolutely continuous spectrum of the operator $H.$
We established a generalized version of the Christ-Kiselev's multi-linear operator technique to deal with the spectral theory of Schrödinger operators. As applications, several spectral results of perturbed periodic Schrödinger operators are obtained, including WKB solutions, sharp transitions of preservation of absolutely continuous spectra, criteria of absence of singular spectra and sharp bounds of the Hausdorff dimension of singular spectra.
This paper is a continuation of my previous work on absolutely continuous and singular spectral shift functions, where it was in particular proved that the singular part of the spectral shift function is an a.e. integer-valued function. It was also shown that the singular spectral shift function is a locally constant function of the coupling constant $r,$ with possible jumps only at resonance points. Main result of this paper asserts that the jump of the singular spectral shift function at a resonance point is equal to the so-called resonance index, --- a new (to the best of my knowledge) noti…
We consider contractive operators $T$ that are trace class perturbations of a unitary operator $U$. We prove that the dimension functions of the absolutely continuous spectrum of $T$, $T^*$ and of $U$ coincide. In particular, if $U$ has a purely singular spectrum then the characteristic function $θ$ of $T$ is a two-sided inner function, i.e. $θ(ξ)$ is unitary a.e. on $\mathbb{T}$. Some corollaries of this result are related to investigations of the asymptotic stability of the operators $T$ and $T^*$ (convergence $T^n\to 0$ and $(T^*)^n\to 0$, respectively, in the strong operator topology). The…
In this work, we prove a bound on multiplicity of the singular spectrum for certain class of Anderson Hamiltonians. The class of operator is $H^ω=Δ+\sum_{n\in\mathbb{Z}^d}ω_n P_n$ on the Hilbert space $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^d)$, where $Δ$ is discrete laplacian, $P_n$ are projection onto $\ell^2(\{x\in\mathbb{Z}^d:n_il_i<x_i\leq (n_i+1)l_i\})$ for some $l_1,\cdots,l_d\in\mathbb{N}$ and $\{ω_n\}_n$ are i.i.d real bounded random variables following absolutely continuous distribution. We prove that the multiplicity of singular spectrum is bounded above by $2^d-d$ independent of $\{l_i\}_{i=1}^d$. When…
We discuss Schrödinger operators on a half-line with decaying oscillatory potentials, such as products of an almost periodic function and a decaying function. We provide sufficient conditions for preservation of absolutely continuous spectrum and give bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of the singular part of the spectral measure. We also discuss the analogs for orthogonal polynomials on the real line and unit circle.
In this paper it is shown that in case of trace class perturbations the singular part of Pushnitski $μ$-invariant does not depend on the angle variable. This gives an alternative proof of integer-valuedness of the singular part of the spectral shift function. As a consequence, the Birman-Krein formula for trace class perturbations follows.
We use trace class scattering theory to exclude the possibility of absolutely continuous spectrum in a large class of self-adjoint operators with an underlying hierarchical structure and provide applications to certain random hierarchical operators and matrices. We proceed to contrast the localizing effect of the hierarchical structure in the deterministic setting with previous results and conjectures in the random setting. Furthermore, we survey stronger localization statements truly exploiting the disorder for the hierarchical Anderson model and report recent results concerning the spectral …
We consider the Schrödinger operator with constant magnetic field defined on the half-plane with a Dirichlet boundary condition, $H_0$, and a decaying electric perturbation $V$. We analyze the spectral density near the Landau levels, which are thresholds in the spectrum of $H_0,$ by studying the Spectral Shift Function (SSF) associated to the pair $(H_0+V,{H_0})$. For perturbations of a fixed sign, we estimate the SSF in terms of the eigenvalue counting function for certain compact operators. If the decay of $V$ is power-like, then using pseudodifferential analysis, we deduce that there are si…
We develop the spectral and scattering theory for self-adjoint Hankel operators $H$ with piecewise continuous symbols. In this case every jump of the symbol gives rise to a band of the absolutely continuous spectrum of $H$. We construct wave operators relating simple "model" (that is, explicitly diagonalizable) Hankel operators for each jump and the given Hankel operator $H$. We show that the set of all these wave operators is asymptotically complete. This determines the absolutely continuous part of $H$. We also prove that the singular continuous spectrum of $H$ is empty and that its eigenval…
In this note, under a certain assumption on an affine space of operators, which admit embedded eigenvalues, it is shown that the singular part of the spectral shift function of any pair of operators from this space is an integer-valued function. The proof uses a natural decomposition of Pushnitski's $μ$-invariant into "absolutely continuous" and "singular" parts. As a corollary, the Birman-Krein formula follows.
In this work, we focus on the multiplicity of singular spectrum for operators of the form $A^ω=A+\sum_{n}ω_n C_n$ on a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, for a self-adjoint operator $A$ and a countable collection $\{C_n\}_{n}$ of non-negative finite rank operators. When $\{ω_n\}_n$ are independent real random variables with absolutely continuous distributions, we show that the multiplicity of singular spectrum is almost surely bounded above by the maximum algebraic multiplicity of eigenvalues of $\sqrt{C_n}(A^ω-z)^{-1}\sqrt{C_n}$ for all $n$ and almost all $(z,ω)$. The result is optimal in…
We consider the spectral and dynamical properties of one-dimensional quantum walks placed into homogenous electric fields according to a discrete version of the minimal coupling principle. We show that for all irrational fields the absolutely continuous spectrum of these systems is empty, and prove Anderson localization for almost all (irrational) fields. This result closes a gap which was left open in the original study of electric quantum walks: a spectral and dynamical characterization of these systems for typical fields. Additionally, we derive an analytic and explicit expression for the L…
Let $G_n$ be an $n \times n$ matrix with real i.i.d. $N(0,1/n)$ entries, let $A$ be a real $n \times n$ matrix with $\Vert A \Vert \le 1$, and let $γ\in (0,1)$. We show that with probability $0.99$, $A + γG_n$ has all of its eigenvalue condition numbers bounded by $O\left(n^{5/2}/γ^{3/2}\right)$ and eigenvector condition number bounded by $O\left(n^3 /γ^{3/2}\right)$. Furthermore, we show that for any $s > 0$, the probability that $A + γG_n$ has two eigenvalues within distance at most $s$ of each other is $O\left(n^4 s^{1/3}/γ^{5/2}\right).$ In fact, we show the above statements hold in the mo…
In this note the notions of trace compatible operators and infinitesimal spectral flow are introduced. We define the spectral shift function as the integral of infinitesimal spectral flow. It is proved that the spectral shift function thus defined is absolutely continuous and Krein's formula is established. Some examples of trace compatible affine spaces of operators are given.
In a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{\mathbf{N}}$ we consider a selfadjoint operator $\mathbf{T}=\mathfrak{A}^*P\mathfrak{A} ,$ where $\mathfrak{A}$ is a pseudodifferential operator of order $-l=-\mathbf{N}/2$ and $P=Vμ_Σ$ is a singular signed measure in $Ω$ concentrated on a Lipschitz surface $Σ$ of dimension $d<\mathbf{N}$, absolutely continuous with respect to the surface measure $μ_Σ$ on $Σ$. We establish eigenvalue estimates and asymptotics for this operator. It turns out that the order of these estimates and asymptotics is independent of the dimension $d$ of the surface. If there are severa…
In this note it is proved that the complete spectral data of selfadjoint Schrödinger operators on unbounded domains can be described with an associated Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. In particular, a characterization of the isolated and embedded eigenvalues, the corresponding eigenspaces, as well as the continuous and absolutely continuous spectrum in terms of the limiting behaviour of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is obtained. Furthermore, a sufficient criterion for the absence of singular continuous spectrum is provided. The results are natural multidimensional analogues of classical facts from si…
This is an overview of mathematical heritage of Sergey Naboko in the area of functional models of non-self-adjoint operators. It covers the works by Sergey in model construction, the analysis of absolutely continuous and singular spectra and the construction of the scattering theory in model terms.
In this paper, we consider an unbounded selfadjoint operator $A$ and its selfadjoint perturbations in the same Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. As S.Albeverio and P. Kurosov (2000), we call a selfadjoint operator $A_{1}$ the singular perturbation of $A$ if $A_{1}$ and {A} have different domains $\mathcal{D}(A),\mathcal{D}(A_{1})$ but $A=A_{1}$ on $\mathcal{D}(A)\cap\mathcal{D}(A_{1})$. Assuming that $A$ has absolutely continuous spectrum and the difference of resolvents $R_{z}(A_{1}) -R_{z}(A)$ of $A_{1}$ and $A$ for non-real $z$ is a trace class operator we find the explicit expression for the sc…
For the pair $\{-Δ, -Δ-αδ_\mathcal{C}\}$ of self-adjoint Schrödinger operators in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$ a spectral shift function is determined in an explicit form with the help of (energy parameter dependent) Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps. Here $δ_{\cal{C}}$ denotes a singular $δ$-potential which is supported on a smooth compact hypersurface $\mathcal{C}\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ and $α$ is a real-valued function on $\mathcal{C}$.
We prove an analogue to the Cayley identity for an arbitrary self-adjoint operator in a Hilbert space. We also provide two new ways to characterize vectors belonging to the singular spectral subspace in terms of the analytic properties of the resolvent of the operator, computed on these vectors. The latter are analogous to those used routinely in the scattering theory for the absolutely continuous subspace.
