We study the question of magnetic confinement of quantum particles on the unit disk $\ID$ in $\IR^2$, i.e. we wish to achieve confinement solely by means of the growth of the magnetic field $B(\vec x)$ near the boundary of the disk. In the spinless case we show that $B(\vec x)\ge \frac{\sqrt 3}{2}\cdot\frac{1}{(1-r)^2}-\frac{1}{\sqrt 3}\frac{1}{(1-r)^2\ln \frac{1}{1-r}}$, for $|\vec x|$ close to 1, insures the confinement provided we assume that the non-radially symmetric part of the magnetic field is not very singular near the boundary. Both constants $\frac{\sqrt 3}{2}$ and $-\frac{1}{\sqrt 3}$ are optimal. This answers, in this context, an open question from Y. Colin de Verdière and F. Truc. We also derive growth conditions for radially symmetric magnetic fields which lead to confinement of spin 1/2 particles.
The spinless semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian $H$ in quantum electrodynamics is considered. The self-adjointness and essential self-adjointness of $H$ are shown. It is emphasized that it includes the massless case. Furthermore, the self-adjointness and the essential self-adjointness of the semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz model with a fixed total momentum is also proven.
Lie symmetries of the Schroedinger-Pauli equations for charged particles and quasirelativistic Schroedinger equations are classified. In particular a new superintegrable system with spin-orbit coupling is discovered.
We consider Schrödinger operators on possibly noncompact Riemannian manifolds, acting on sections in vector bundles, with locally square integrable potentials whose negative part is in the underlying Kato class. Using path integral methods, we prove that under geodesic completeness these differential operators are essentially self-adjoint on the space of smooth functions with compact support, and that the corresponding operator closures are semibounded from below. These results apply to nonrelativistic Pauli-Dirac operators that describe the energy of Hydrogen type atoms on Riemannian 3-manifo…
We introduce a novel approach for defining a $δ'$-interaction on a subset of the real line of Lebesgue measure zero which is based on Sturm-Liouville differential expression with measure coefficients. This enables us to establish basic spectral properties (e.g., self-adjointness, lower semiboundedness and spectral asymptotics) of Hamiltonians with $δ'$-interactions concentrated on sets of complicated structures.
With using the algebraic approach Lie symmetries of Schrödinger equations with matrix potentials are classified. Thirty three inequivalent equations of such type together with the related symmetry groups are specified, the admissible equivalence relations are clearly indicated. In particular the Boyer results concerning kinematical invariance groups for arbitrary potentials (C. P. Boyer, Helv. Phys. Acta, {\bf 47}, 450--605 (1974)) are clarified and corrected.
Integrable quantum mechanical systems for neutral particles with spin $\frac12$ and nontrivial dipole momentum are classified. It is demonstrated that such systems give rise to new exactly solvable problems of quantum mechanics with clear physical content. Solutions for three of them are given in explicit form. The related symmetry algebras and superalgebras are discussed. The presented classification is restricted to two-dimensional systems which admit matrix integrals of motion linear in momenta.
By means of functional integrations spectral properties of semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonians in quantum electrodynamics is considered. Two self-adjoint extensions of a semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian are defined. An essential self-adjointness, a spatial decay of bound states, a Gaussian domination of the ground state and the existence of a measure associated with the ground state are shown.
Path integral representations for generalized Schrödinger operators obtained under a class of Bernstein functions of the Laplacian are established. The one-to-one correspondence of Bernstein functions with Lévy subordinators is used, thereby the role of Brownian motion entering the standard Feynman-Kac formula is taken here by subordinated Brownian motion. As specific examples, fractional and relativistic Schrödinger operators with magnetic field and spin are covered. Results on self-adjointness of these operators are obtained under conditions allowing for singular magnetic fields and singular…
We consider 2- and 3-dimensional Schrödinger or generalized Schrödinger-Pauli operators with the non-degenerating magnetic field in the open domain under certain non-degeneracy assumptions we derive pointwise spectral asymptotics. We also consider asymptotics of some related expressions (see below). For all asymptotics loops rather than periodic trajectories play important role.
In this paper we show how all the quantum properties of Schroedinger and Pauli particles can be described entirely from within a Clifford algebra taken over the reals. There is no need to appeal to any `wave function'. To describe a quantum system, we define the Clifford density element [CDE] as a product of an element of a minimal left ideal and its Clifford conjugate. The properties of the system are then completely specified in terms of bilinear invariants of the first and second kind calculated using the CDE. Thus the quantum properties of a system can be completely described from within t…
We consider 2-dimensional Schroedinger operator with the non-degenerating magnetic field in the domain with the boundary and under certain non-degeneracy assumptions we derive spectral asymptotics with the remainder estimate better than $O(h^{-1})$, up to $O(μ^{-1}h^{-1})$ and the principal part $\asymp h^{-2}$ where $h\ll 1$ is Planck constant and $μ\gg 1$ is the intensity of the magnetic field; $μh \le 1$. We also consider generalized Schrödinger-Pauli operator in the same framework albeit with $μh\ge 1$ and derive spectral asymptotics with the remainder estimate up to O(1) and with the prin…
We consider an open domain with a compact boundary in an Euclidean space and a Schroedinger operator with magnetic field on this domain. We give sufficient conditions on the rate of growth of the magnetic field near the boundary which guarantees essential self-adjointness of this operator. From the physical point of view, it means that the quantum particle is confined in the domain by the magnetic field. We construct examples on polytopes and domains with smooth boundaries; these examples of "magnetic bottles" are highly simplified models of what is done for nuclear fusion in tokamacs.
Physical problems for which the existence of non-trivial topological Pauli phase (i.e. fractional quantization of angular orbital angular momenta that is possible in 2D case) is essential are discussed within the framework of two-dimensional Helmholtz, Schroedinger and Dirac equations. As examples in classical field theory we consider a "wedge problem" -- a description of a field generated by a point charge between two conducting half-planes -- and a Fresnel diffraction from knife-edge. In few-electron circular quantum dots the choice between integer and half-integer quantization of orbital an…
