We study the spectral theory of operators, generated as direct sums of self-adjoint extensions of quasi-differential minimal operators on a multi-interval set (self-adjoint vector-operators), acting in a Hilbert space.
Spectral theorems for such operators are discussed, the structure of the ordered spectral representation is investigated for the case of differential coordinate operators. One of the main results is the construction of spectral resolutions. Finally, we study the matters connected with analytical decompositions of generalized eigenfunctions of such vector-operators and build a matrix spectral measure leading to the matrix Hilbert space theory. Results, connected with other spectral properties of self-adjoint vector-operators, such as the introduction of the identity resolution and the spectral multiplicity have also been obtained.
Vector-operators have been mainly studied by W.N. Everitt, L. Markus and A. Zettl. Being a natural continuation of Everitt-Markus-Zettl theory, the presented results reveal the internal structure of self-adjoint vector-operators and are essential for the further study of their spectral properties.
In this paper we construct the spectral expansion for the non-self-adjoint differential operators generated in the space of vektor functions by the ordinary differential expression of arbitrary order with the periodic matrix coefficients by using the essential spectral singularities, singular quasimomenta and the series with parenthesis.
In this paper we construct the spectral expansion for the differential operator generated in all real line by ordinary differential expression of arbitrary order with periodic complex-valued coefficients by introducing new concepts as essential spectral singularities and singular quasimomenta and using the series with parenthesis. Moreover, we find a criteria for which the spectral expansion coincides with the Gelfand expansion for the self-adjoint case.
In this paper we study a family of operators dependent on a small parameter $ε> 0$, which arise in a problem in fluid mechanics. We show that the spectra of these operators converge to N as $ε\to 0$, even though, for fixed $ε> 0$, the eigenvalue asymptotics are quadratic.
In this paper we consider the spectrum of the self-adjoint differential operator L generated by the differential expression of order n with the m by m periodic matrix coefficients, where n and m are respectively odd and even integers and n>1. We prove that the number of gaps in the spectrum of L is finite and find explicit estimation in term of coefficients for the number of the gaps. Moreover, we find a condition on the norms of the coefficients for which the spectrum is real axis. Besides we investigate the bands of the spectrum and prove that most of the real axis is overlapped by m bands.
In this article we obtain asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the non-self-adjoint operator generated in space of vector-functions by the Sturm-Liouville equation with m by m matrix potential and the boundary conditions whose scalar case (m=1) are strongly regular. Using these asymptotic formulas, we find a condition on the potential for which the root functions of this operator form a Riesz basis.
In this expository article some spectral properties of self-adjoint differential operators are investigated. The main objective is to illustrate and (partly) review how one can construct domains or potentials such that the essential or discrete spectrum of a Schrödinger operator of a certain type (e.g. the Neumann Laplacian) coincides with a predefined subset of the real line. Another aim is to emphasize that the spectrum of a differential operator on a bounded domain or bounded interval is not necessarily discrete, that is, eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity, continuous spectrum, and eigenv…
The purpose of this paper is to study the essential spectrum of non-self-adjoint singular matrix differential operators in the Hilbert space $L^2(\mathbb{R})\oplus L^2(\mathbb{R})$ induced by matrix differential expressions of the form \begin{align}\label{abstract:mdo} \left(\begin{array}{cc} τ_{11}(\,\cdot\,,D) & τ_{12}(\,\cdot\,,D)\\[3.5ex] τ_{21}(\,\cdot\,,D) & τ_{22}(\,\cdot\,,D) \end{array}\right), \end{align} where $τ_{11}$, $τ_{12}$, $τ_{21}$, $τ_{22}$ are respectively $m$-th, $n$-th, $k$-th and 0 order ordinary differential expressions with $m=n+k$ being even. Under suitable assumption…
Exceptional Laguerre-type differential expressions make up an infinite class of Schrödinger operators having rational potentials and one limit-circle endpoint. In this manuscript, the spectrum of all self-adjoint extensions for a general exceptional Laguerre-type differential expression is given in terms of the Darboux transformations which relate the expression to the classical Laguerre differential expression. The spectrum is extracted from an explicit Weyl $m$-function, up to a sign. The construction relies primarily on two tools: boundary triples, which parameterize the self-adjoint extens…
We prove an analogue to the Cayley identity for an arbitrary self-adjoint operator in a Hilbert space. We also provide two new ways to characterize vectors belonging to the singular spectral subspace in terms of the analytic properties of the resolvent of the operator, computed on these vectors. The latter are analogous to those used routinely in the scattering theory for the absolutely continuous subspace.
The inverse problem for the differential operator pencil with complex periodic potential and discontinuous coefficients on the axis is studied. Main characteristics of the fundamental solutions are investigated, the spectrum of the operator is studied. We give formulation of the inverse problem, prove a uniqueness theorem and provide a constructive procedure for the solution of the inverse problem
We study $H=D^*D+V$, where $D$ is a first order elliptic differential operator acting on sections of a Hermitian vector bundle over a Riemannian manifold $M$, and $V$ is a Hermitian bundle endomorphism. In the case when $M$ is geodesically complete, we establish the essential self-adjointness of positive integer powers of $H$. In the case when $M$ is not necessarily geodesically complete, we give a sufficient condition for the essential self-adjointness of $H$, expressed in terms of the behavior of $V$ relative to the Cauchy boundary of $M$.
In this work, we find the asymptotic formulas for the sum of the negative eigenvalues smaller than $-\varepsilon$ $(\varepsilon >0)$ of a self-adjoint operator $L$ which is defined by the following differential expression $$\ell(y)=-(p(x)y'(x))'-Q(x)y(x)$$ with the boundary condition $y(0) = 0$ in the space in the space $L_{2}(0,\infty ;H)$.
We study the Gaffney Laplacian on a vector bundle equipped with a compatible metric and connection over a Riemannian manifold that is possibly geodesically incomplete. Under the hypothesis that the Cauchy boundary is polar, we demonstrate the self-adjointness of this Laplacian. Furthermore, we show that negligible boundary is a necessary and sufficient condition for the self-adjointness of this operator.
We consider Schrödinger operators on possibly noncompact Riemannian manifolds, acting on sections in vector bundles, with locally square integrable potentials whose negative part is in the underlying Kato class. Using path integral methods, we prove that under geodesic completeness these differential operators are essentially self-adjoint on the space of smooth functions with compact support, and that the corresponding operator closures are semibounded from below. These results apply to nonrelativistic Pauli-Dirac operators that describe the energy of Hydrogen type atoms on Riemannian 3-manifo…
We consider first-order differential operators with locally bounded measurable coefficients on vector bundles with measurable coefficient metrics. Under a mild set of assumptions, we demonstrate the equivalence between the essential self-adjointness of such operators to a negligible boundary property. When the operator possesses higher regularity coefficients, we show that higher powers are essentially self-adjoint if and only if this condition is satisfied. In the case that the low-regularity Riemannian metric induces a complete length space, we demonstrate essential self-adjointness of the o…
The question of self-adjoint realizations of sign-indefinite second order differential operators is discussed in terms of a model problem. Operators of the type $-\frac{d}{dx} \sgn (x) \frac{d}{dx}$ are generalized to finite, not necessarily compact, metric graphs. All self-adjoint realizations are parametrized using methods from extension theory. The spectral and scattering theory of the self-adjoint realizations are studied in detail.
We investigate the spectrum of a typical non-self-adjoint differential operator $AD=-d^2/dx^2\otimes A$ acting on $\Lp(0,1)\otimes \mathbb{C}^2$, where $A$ is a $2\times 2$ constant matrix. We impose Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in the first and second coordinate respectively at both ends of $[0,1]\subset\mathbb{R}$. For $A\in \mathbb{R}^{2\times 2}$ we explore in detail the connection between the entries of $A$ and the spectrum of $AD$, we find necessary conditions to ensure similarity to a self-adjoint operator and give numerical evidence that suggests a non-trivial spectral evo…
In this work we extend a previous work about the Weyl asymptotics of the distribution of eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint differential operators with small multiplicative random perturbations, by treating the case of operators on compact manifolds
In this paper we provide a complete study of the spectrum of a constant coefficients differential operator on a scale of localized Sobolev spaces, $H^{s}_{loc}(I),$ which are Fréchet spaces. This is quite different from what we find in the literature, where all the relevant results are concerned with spectrum on Banach spaces. Our aim is to understand the behavior of all the three types of spectrum (point, residual and continuous) and the relation between them and those of the dual operator. The main result we present shows that there is no complex number in the resolvent set of such operators…
In this note we prove that the maximally defined operator associated with a class of Dirac-type differential expressions M(Q) is J-self-adjoint with respect to a proper antilinear conjugation J under the general hypothesis that the entries of the matrix potential coefficient Q are locally integrable on the real line. The Dirac-type differential expression M(Q) is of significance as it appears in the Lax formulation of the nonabelian (matrix-valued) focusing nonlinear Schrödinger hierarchy of evolution equations.
This text is a slightly expanded version of my 6 hour mini-course at the PDE-meeting in Évian-les-Bains in June 2009. The first part gives some old and recent results on non-self-adjoint differential operators. The second part is devoted to recent results about Weyl distribution of eigenvalues of elliptic operators with small random perturbations.
The purpose of this note is to present several criteria for essential self-adjointness. The method is based on ideas due to Shubin. This note is divided into two parts. The first part deals with symmetric first order systems on the line in the most general setting. Such a symmetric first order system of differential equations gives rise naturally to a symmetric linear relation in a Hilbert space. In this case even regularity is nontrivial. We will announce a regularity result and discuss criteria for essential self-adjointness of such systems. This part is based on joint work with Mark Malamud…
A theorem that is of aid in computing the domain of the adjoint operator is provided. It may serve e.g. as a criterion for selfadjointness of a symmetric operator, for normality of a formally normal operator or for $H$--selfadjointness of an $H$--symmetric operator. Differential operators and operators given by an infinite matrix are considered as examples.
In this work we continue the study of the Weyl asymptotics of the distribution of eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint (pseudo)differential operators with small random perturbations, by treating the case of multiplicative perturbations in arbitrary dimension. We were led to quite essential improvements of many of the probabilistic aspects.
In this paper, we consider elliptic differential operators on compact manifolds with a random perturbation in the 0th order term and show under fairly weak additional assumptions that the large eigenvalues almost surely distribute according to the Weyl law, well-known in the self-adjoint case.
We consider families of non-self-adjoint perturbations of self-adjoint harmonic and anharmonic oscillators. The norms of spectral projections of these operators are found to grow at intermediate rates from arbitrarily slowly to exponentially rapidly.
We study the essential self-adjointness for real principal type differential operators. Unlike the elliptic case, we need geometric conditions even for operators on the Euclidean space with asymptotically constant coefficients, and we prove the essential self-adjointness under the null non-trapping condition.
For a Riemannian covering $p \colon M_{2} \to M_{1}$, we compare the spectrum of an essentially self-adjoint differential operator $D_{1}$ on a bundle $E_{1} \to M_{1}$ with the spectrum of its lift $D_{2}$ on $p^{*}E_{1} \to M_{2}$. We prove that if the covering is infinite sheeted and amenable, then the spectrum of $D_{1}$ is contained in the essential spectrum of any self-adjoint extension of $D_{2}$. We show that if the deck transformations group of the covering is infinite and $D_{2}$ is essentially self-adjoint (or symmetric and bounded from below), then $D_{2}$ (or the Friedrichs extens…
We discuss the essential spectrum of essentially self-adjoint elliptic differential operators of first order and of Laplace type operators on Riemannian vector bundles over geometrically finite orbifolds.
We consider a large class of self-adjoint elliptic problem associated with the second derivative acting on a space of vector-valued functions. We present two different approaches to the study of the associated eigenvalues problems. The first, more general one allows to replace a secular equation (which is well-known in some special cases) by an abstract rank condition. The latter seems to apply particularly well to a specific boundary condition, sometimes dubbed "anti-Kirchhoff" in the literature, that arise in the theory of differential operators on graphs; it also permits to discuss interest…
In this note we provide estimates for the lower bound of the self-adjoint operator associated with the three-coefficient Sturm-Liouville differential expression $$ \frac{1}{r} \left(-\frac{\mathrm d}{\mathrm dx} p \frac{\mathrm d}{\mathrm dx} + q\right) $$ in the weighted $L^2$-Hilbert space $L^2(\mathbb R; rdx)$.
We consider perturbed quadharmonic operators, $Δ^4 + V$, acting on sections of a Hermitian vector bundle over a complete Riemannian manifold, with the potential $V$ satisfying a bound from below by a non-positive function depending on the distance from a point. Under a bounded geometry assumption on the Hermitian vector bundle and the underlying Riemannian manifold, we give a sufficient condition for the essential self-adjointness of such operators. We then apply this to prove the separation property in $L^2$ when the perturbed operator acts on functions.
Using the resolvent operator, we develop an algorithm for computing smoothed approximations of spectral measures associated with self-adjoint operators. The algorithm can achieve arbitrarily high-orders of convergence in terms of a smoothing parameter for computing spectral measures of general differential, integral, and lattice operators. Explicit pointwise and $L^p$-error bounds are derived in terms of the local regularity of the measure. We provide numerical examples, including a partial differential operator, a magnetic tight-binding model of graphene, and compute one thousand eigenvalues …
In this paper, we investigate the spectrum of the self adjoint differential operator with operator coefficitent in a separable Hilbert space. We also derive asymptotic formulas for the sum of eigenvalues of this operator.
The spectral problem for self-adjoint extensions is studied using the machinery of boundary triplets. For a class of symmetric operators having Weyl functions of a special type we calculate explicitly the spectral projections in the form of operator-valued integrals. This allows one to give a constructive proof of the fact that, in certain intervals, the resulting self-adjoint extensions are unitarily equivalent to a certain parameterizing operator acting in a smaller space, and one is able to provide an explicit form the associated unitary transform. Applications to differential operators on …
We consider a class of self-adjoint extensions using the boundary triple technique. Assuming that the associated Weyl function has the special form $M(z)=\big(m(z)\Id-T\big) n(z)^{-1}$ with a bounded self-adjoint operator $T$ and scalar functions $m,n$ we show that there exists a class of boundary conditions such that the spectral problem for the associated self-adjoint extensions in gaps of a certain reference operator admits a unitary reduction to the spectral problem for $T$. As a motivating example we consider differential operators on equilateral metric graphs, and we describe a class of …
