In this paper we investigate the operator $H_β=-Δ-βδ(\cdot-Γ)$ in $L^{2}({\Bbb R}^{2})$, where $β>0$ and $Γ$ is a closed $C^{4}$ Jordan curve in ${\Bbb R}^{2}$. We obtain the asymptotic form of each eigenvalue of $H_β$ as $β$ tends to infinity. We also get the asymptotic form of the number of negative eigenvalues of $H_β$ in the strong coupling asymptotic regime.
In this paper we study the operator $H_β=-Δ-βδ(\cdot-Γ)$ in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{2})$, where $Γ$ is a smooth periodic curve in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$. We obtain the asymptotic form of the band spectrum of $H_β$ as $β$ tends to infinity. Furthermore, we prove the existence of the band gap of $σ(H_β)$ for sufficiently large $β>0$. Finally, we also derive the spectral behaviour for $β\to\infty$ in the case when $Γ$ is non-periodic and asymptotically straight.
We introduce a novel approach for defining a $δ'$-interaction on a subset of the real line of Lebesgue measure zero which is based on Sturm-Liouville differential expression with measure coefficients. This enables us to establish basic spectral properties (e.g., self-adjointness, lower semiboundedness and spectral asymptotics) of Hamiltonians with $δ'$-interactions concentrated on sets of complicated structures.
In this note we sharpen the lower bound from [LLP10] on the spectrum of the 2D Schroedinger operator with a delta-interaction supported on a planar angle. Using the same method we obtain the lower bound on the spectrum of the 2D Schroedinger operator with a delta-interaction supported on crossing straight lines. The latter operators arise in the three-body quantum problem with delta-interactions between particles.
Inequalities are derived for sums and quotients of eigenvalues of magnetic Schroedinger operators with non-negative electric potentials in domains. The bounds reflect the correct order of growth in the semi-classical limit.
The behaviour of the spectral edges (embedded eigenvalues and resonances) is discussed at the two ends of the continuous spectrum of non-local discrete Schrödinger operators with a $δ$-potential. These operators arise by replacing the discrete Laplacian by a strictly increasing $C^1$-function of the discrete Laplacian. The dependence of the results on this function and the lattice dimension are explicitly derived. It is found that while in the case of the discrete Schrödinger operator these behaviours are the same no matter which end of the continuous spectrum is considered, an asymmetry occur…
In this paper we consider magnetic Schroedinger operators on the two-dimensional unit disk with a radially symmetric magnetic field which explodes to infinity at the boundary. We prove a bound for the eigenvalue moments and a bound for the number of negative eigenvalues for such operators.
We investigate the operator $-Δ-αδ(x-Γ)$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^3)$, where $Γ$ is a smooth surface which is either compact or periodic and satisfies suitable regularity requirements. We find an asymptotic expansion for the lower part of the spectrum as $α\to\infty$ which involves a ``two-dimensional'' comparison operator determined by the geometry of the surface $Γ$. In the compact case the asymptotics concerns negative eigenvalues, in the periodic case Floquet eigenvalues. We also give a bandwidth estimate in the case when a periodic $Γ$ decomposes into compact connected components. Finally, we c…
We prove dynamical upper bounds for discrete one-dimensional Schroedinger operators in terms of various spacing properties of the eigenvalues of finite volume approximations. We demonstrate the applicability of our approach by a study of the Fibonacci Hamiltonian.
It is shown that the ground-state eigenvalue of a semirelativistic Hamiltonian of the form H = sqrt(m^2+p^2) + V is bounded below by the Schroedinger operator m + beta p^2 + V, for suitable beta > 0. An example is discussed.
We prove conditions on potentials which imply that the sum of the negative eigenvalues of the Schroeodinger operator is finite. We use a method for bounding eigenvalues based on estimates of the Hilbert-Schmidt norm of semigroup differences and on complex analysis
An explicit construction is provided for embedding n positive eigenvalues in the spectrum of a Schroedinger operator on the half-line with a Dirichlet boundary condition at the origin. The resulting potential is of von Neumann-Wigner type, but can be real valued as well as complex valued.
We prove that the number of negative eigenvalues of two-dimensional magnetic Schroedinger operators is bounded from above by the strength of the corresponding electric potential. Such estimates fail in the absence of a magnetic field. We also show how the corresponding upper bounds depend on the properties of the magnetic field and discuss their connection with Hardy-type inequalities.
We consider Schroedinger operators on regular metric trees and prove Lieb-Thirring and Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum inequalities for their negative eigenvalues. The validity of these inequalities depends on the volume growth of the tree. We show that the bounds are valid in the endpoint case and reflect the correct order in the weak or strong coupling limit.
Problems posed by semirelativistic Hamiltonians of the form H = sqrt{m^2+p^2} + V(r) are studied. It is shown that energy upper bounds can be constructed in terms of certain related Schroedinger operators; these bounds include free parameters which can be chosen optimally.
We investigate the eigenvalues of perturbed spherical Schrödinger operators under the assumption that the perturbation $q(x)$ satisfies $x q(x) \in L^1(0,1)$. We show that the square roots of eigenvalues are given by the square roots of the unperturbed eigenvalues up to an decaying error depending on the behavior of $q(x)$ near $x=0$. Furthermore, we provide sets of spectral data which uniquely determine $q(x)$.
We consider a quantum particle moving in the one dimensional lattice Z and interacting with a indefinite sign external field v. We prove that the associated discrete Schroedinger operator H can have one or two eigenvalues, situated as below the bottom of the essential spectrum, as well as above its top. Moreover, we show that the operator H can have two eigenvalues outside of the essential spectrum such that one of them is situated below the bottom of the essential spectrum, and other one above its top.
By developing the method of multipliers, we establish sufficient conditions on the electric potential and magnetic field which guarantee that the corresponding two-dimensional Schroedinger operator possesses no point spectrum. The settings of complex-valued electric potentials and singular magnetic potentials of Aharonov-Bohm field are also covered.
The following comparison rules for the discrete spectrum of the position-dependent mass (PDM) Schroedinger equation are established. (i) If a constant mass $m_0$ and a PDM $m(x)$ are ordered everywhere, that is either $m_0\leq m(x)$ or $m_0\geq m(x)$, then the corresponding eigenvalues of the constant-mass Hamiltonian and of the PDM Hamiltonian with the same potential and the BenDaniel-Duke ambiguity parameters are ordered. (ii) The corresponding eigenvalues of PDM Hamiltonians with the different sets of ambiguity parameters are ordered if $\nabla^2 (1/m(x))$ has a definite sign. We prove thes…
We study the phenomenon of an eigenvalue emerging from essential spectrum of a Schroedinger operator perturbed by a fast oscillating compactly supported potential. We prove the sufficient conditions for the existence and absence of such eigenvalue. If exists, we obtain the leading term of its asymptotics expansion.
We consider a time-dependent one-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a symmetric potential double well represented by two delta interactions. Among our results we give an explicit formula for the integral kernel of the unitary semigroup associated with the linear part of the Hamiltonian. Then we establish the corresponding Strichartz-type estimate and we prove local existence and uniqueness of the solution to the original nonlinear problem.
Let $λ_i(Ω,V)$ be the $i$th eigenvalue of the Schrödinger operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \R^n$ and with the positive potential $V$. Following the spirit of the Payne-Pólya-Weinberger conjecture and under some convexity assumptions on the spherically rearranged potential $V_\star$, we prove that $λ_2(Ω,V) \le λ_2(S_1,V_\star)$. Here $S_1$ denotes the ball, centered at the origin, that satisfies the condition $λ_1(Ω,V) = λ_1(S_1,V_\star)$. Further we prove under the same convexity assumptions on a spherically symmetric potential $V$, that $λ_2(B_R, V) /…
We consider non-selfadjoint operators of the kind arising in linearized NLS and prove dispersive bounds for the time-evolution without assuming that the edges of the essential spectrum are regular. Our approach does not depend on any specific properties of NLS. Rather, it is axiomatic on the linear level, and our results are obtained from four assumptions (which are of course motivated by NLS). This work is in three dimensions.
We prove a localization theorem for continuous ergodic Schrödinger operators $ H_ω:= H_0 + V_ω$, where the random potential $ V_ω$ is a nonnegative Anderson-type perturbation of the periodic operator $ H_0$. We consider a lower spectral band edge of $ σ(H_0) $, say $ E= 0 $, at a gap which is preserved by the perturbation $ V_ω$. Assuming that all Floquet eigenvalues of $ H_0$, which reach the spectral edge 0 as a minimum, have there a positive definite Hessian, we conclude that there exists an interval $ I $ containing 0 such that $ H_ω$ has only pure point spectrum in $ I $ for almost all $ …
Spectral properties of the Schroedinger operator $A_λ = -Δ+λV$ on regular metric trees are studied. It is shown that as $λ$ goes to zero the behavior of the negative eigenvalues of $A_λ$ depends on the global structure of the tree.
We give a method to solve the time-dependent Schroedinger equation for a system of one-dimensional bosons interacting via a repulsive delta function potential. The method uses the ideas of Bethe Ansatz but does not use the spectral theory of the associated Hamiltonian.
Using relative oscillation theory and the reducibility result of Eliasson, we study perturbations of quasiperiodic Schroedinger operators. In particular, we derive relative oscillation criteria and eigenvalue asymptotics for critical potentials.
We show absence of positive eigenvalues for generalized 2-body hard- core Schroedinger operators under the condition of bounded strictly convex obstacles. A scheme for showing absence of positive eigenvalues for generalized N -body hard-core Schroedinger operators, N \geq 2, is presented. This scheme involves high energy resolvent estimates, and for N = 2 it is implemented by a Mourre commutator type method. A particular example is the Helium atom with the assumption of infinite mass and finite extent nucleus.
The goal of this paper is to derive estimates of eigenvalue moments for Dirichlet Laplacians and Schrödinger operators in regions having infinite cusps which are geometrically nontrivial being either curved or twisted; we are going to show how those geometric properties enter the eigenvalue bounds. The obtained inequalities reflect the essentially one-dimensional character of the cusps and we give an example showing that in an intermediate energy region they can be much stronger than the usual semiclassical bounds.
In this work, we study inverse resonance problems for the Schrödinger operator on the real line with the potential supported in $[0,1]$. In general, all eigenvalues and resonances can not uniquely determine the potential. (i) It is shown that if the potential is known a priori on $[0,1/2]$, then the unique recovery of the potential on the whole interval from all eigenvalues and resonances is valid. (ii) If the potential is known a priori on $[0,a]$, then for the case $a>1/2$, infinitely many eigenvalues and resonances can be missing for the unique determination of the potential, and for the ca…
We review some of the work by the authors on this topic. In particular, we discuss the recent paper "Fine properties of the IDS and a quantitative separation property of the Dirichlet eigenvalues".
This note points out some bounds for the number of negative eigenvalues of Schroedinger operators with Hardy-type potentials, which follow from a simple coordinate transformation, and could prove useful in a spectral analysis of certain supersymmetric quantum mechanical models.
The Schroedinger equation on the half line is considered with a real-valued, integrable potential having a finite first moment. It is shown that the potential and the boundary conditions are uniquely determined by the data containing the discrete eigenvalues for a boundary condition at the origin, the continuous part of the spectral measure for that boundary condition, and a subset of the discrete eigenvalues for a different boundary condition. This result extends the celebrated two-spectrum uniqueness theorem of Borg and Marchenko to the case where there is also a continuous spectrum
In this note, we derive explicit formulas for the Schroedinger wave operators in R^2 under the assumption that 0-energy is neither an eigenvalue nor a resonance. These formulas justify the use of a recently introduced topological approach of scattering theory to obtain index theorems.
Resonances which result from perturbation of embedded eigenvalues are studied by time dependent methods. A general theory is developed, with new and weaker conditions, allowing for perturbations of threshold eigenvalues and relaxed Fermi Golden rule. The exponential decay rate of resonances is addressed; its uniqueness in the time dependent picture is shown is certain cases. The relation to the existence of meromorphic continuation of the properly weighted Green's function to time dependent resonance is further elucidated, by giving an equivalent time dependent asymptotic expansion of the solu…
We consider operators with random potentials on graphs, such as the lattice version of the random Schroedinger operator. The main result is a general bound on the probabilities of simultaneous occurrence of eigenvalues in specified distinct intervals, with the corresponding eigenfunctions being separately localized within prescribed regions. The bound generalizes the Wegner estimate on the density of states. The analysis proceeds through a new multiparameter spectral averaging principle.
The aim of the paper is to derive spectral estimates on the eigenvalue moments of the magnetic Schroedinger operators defined on the two-dimensional disk with a radially symmetric magnetic field and radially symmetric electric potential.
The Schroedinger operator with point interaction in one dimension has a U(2) family of self-adjoint extensions. We study the spectrum of the operator and show that (i) the spectrum is uniquely determined by the eigenvalues of the matrix U belonging to U(2) that characterizes the extension, and that (ii) the space of distinct spectra is given by the orbifold T^2/Z_2 which is a Moebius strip with boundary. We employ a parametrization of U(2) that admits a direct physical interpretation and furnishes a coherent framework to realize the spectral duality and anholonomy recently found. This allows u…
We study the spectrum of a one-dimensional Schroedinger operator perturbed by a fast oscillating potential. The oscillation period is a small parameter. The essential spectrum is found in an explicit form. The existence and multiplicity of the discrete spectrum are studied. The complete asymptotics expansions for the eigenvalues and the associated eigenfunctions are constructed.
We prove trace identities for commutators of operators, which are used to derive sum rules and sharp universal bounds for the eigenvalues of periodic Schroedinger operators and Schroedinger operators on immersed manifolds. In particular, we prove bounds on the eigenvalue lambda_{N+1} in terms of the lower spectrum, bounds on ratios of means of eigenvalues, and universal monotonicity properties of eigenvalue moments, which imply sharp versions of Lieb-Thirring inequalities. In the geometric context we derive a version of Reilly's inequality, bounding the eigenvalue lambda_{N+1} of the Laplace-B…
We consider a Schroedinger operator on the axis with a bipartite potential consisting of two compactly supported complex-valued functions, whose supports are separated by a large distance. We show that this operator possesses a sequence of approximately equidistant complex-valued wavenumbers situated near the real axis. Depending on its imaginary part, each wavenumber corresponds to either a resonance or an eigenvalue. The obtained sequence of wavenumbers resembles transmission resonances in electromagnetic Fabry-Pérot interferometers formed by parallel mirrors. Our result has potential applic…
We consider a singular Schrödinger operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$ written formally as $-Δ- βδ(x-γ)$ where $γ$ is a $C^4$ smooth open arc in $\mathbb{R}^2$ of length $L$ with regular ends. It is shown that the $j$th negative eigenvalue of this operator behaves in the strong-coupling limit, $β\to +\infty$, asymptotically as \[ E_j(β)=-\frac{β^2}{4} +μ_j +\mathcal{O}\Big(\dfrac{\logβ}β\Big), \] where $μ_j$ is the $j$th Dirichlet eigenvalue of the operator \[ -\frac{d^2}{ds^2} -\frac{κ(s)^2}{4}\, \] on $L^2(0,L)$ with $κ(s)$ being the signed curvature of $γ$ at the point $s\in(0,L)$.
We consider boundary conditions at the vertex of a star graph which make Schroedinger operators on the graph self-adjoint, in particular, the two-parameter family of such conditions invariant with respect to permutations of graph edges. It is proved that the corresponding operators can be approximated in the norm-resolvent sense by elements of another Schroedinger operator family on the same graph in which the delta coupling is imposed at the vertex and an additional point interaction is placed at each edge provided the coupling parameters are properly chosen.
This paper presents a thorough analysis of 1-dimensional Schroedinger operators whose potential is a linear combination of the Coulomb term 1/r and the centrifugal term 1/r^2. We allow both coupling constants to be complex. Using natural boundary conditions at 0, a two parameter holomorphic family of closed operators is introduced. We call them the Whittaker operators, since in the mathematical literature their eigenvalue equation is called the Whittaker equation. Spectral and scattering theory for Whittaker operators is studied. Whittaker operators appear in quantum mechanics as the radial pa…
We prove dispersive estimates for Schroedinger operators in dimension three without any assumptions on zero energy. Ie, we allows resonances and/or eigenvalues at zero energy.
We consider a periodic system of domains coupled by small windows. In such domain we study the band spectrum of a Schroedinger operator subject to Neumann condition. We show that near each isolated eigenvalue of the similar operator but in the periodicity cell, there are several non-intersecting bands of the spectrum for the perturbed operator. We also discuss the position of the points at which the band functions attain the edges of each band.
We prove new and explicit formulas for the wave operators of Schroedinger operators in R^3. These formulas put into light the very special role played by the generator of dilations and validate the topological approach of Levinson's theorem introduced in a previous publication. Our results hold for general (not spherically symmetric) potentials decaying fast enough at infinity, without any assumption on the absence of eigenvalue or resonance at 0-energy.
In a previous paper we established Cwikel-type estimates on noncommutative tori and used them to get analogues in this setting of the Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum (CLR) and Lieb-Thirring inequalities for negative eigenvalues of fractional Schrödinger operators. In this paper, we focus on "curved" NC tori, where the role of the usual Laplacian is played by Laplace-Beltrami operators associated with arbitrary Riemannian metrics. The Cwikel-type estimates of our previous paper are extended to pseudodifferential operators and powers of Laplace-Beltrami operators. There are several applications of these e…
Inspired by F. Wilczek's QCD Lite, quantum Yang-Mills-Weyl Dynamics (YMWD) describes quantum interaction between gauge bosons (associated with a simple compact gauge Lie group $\mathbb{G}$) and larks (massless chiral fields colored by an irreducible unitary representation of $\mathbb{G}$). Schroedinger representation of this quantum Yang-Mills-Weyl theory is based on a sesqui-holomorphic operator calculus of infinite-dimensional operators with variational derivatives. The spectrum of the quantum YMWD, with initial data in the central euclidean ball of a radius $0<R<+\infty$, is self-similar in…
An asymptotic interation method for solving second-order homogeneous linear differential equations of the form y'' = lambda(x) y' + s(x) y is introduced, where lambda(x) \neq 0 and s(x) are C-infinity functions. Applications to Schroedinger type problems, including some with highly singular potentials, are presented.
We study spectral properties of the Schroedinger operator with an imaginary sign potential on the real line. By constructing the resolvent kernel, we show that the pseudospectra of this operator are highly non-trivial, because of a blow-up of the resolvent at infinity. Furthermore, we derive estimates on the location of eigenvalues of the operator perturbed by complex potentials. The overall analysis demonstrates striking differences with respect to the weak-coupling behaviour of the Laplacian.
We consider the spectrum of a Schroedinger operator in a multi-dimensional cylinder perturbed by a shrinking potential. We study the phenomenon of a new eigenvalue emerging from the threshold of the essential spectrum and give the sufficient conditions for such eigenvalues to emerge. If such eigenvalues exist, we construct their asymptotic expansions.
Let L be a Schroedinger operator with potential W in L^{(n+1)/2}. We prove that there is no embedded eigenvalue. The main tool is an Lp Carleman type estimate, which builds on delicate dispersive estimates established in a previous paper. The arguments extend to variable coefficient operators with long range potentials and with gradient potentials.
We analyze two-dimensional Schrödinger operators with the potential $|xy|^p - λ(x^2+y^2)^{p/(p+2)}$ where $p\ge 1$ and $λ\ge 0$, which exhibit an abrupt change of its spectral properties at a critical value of the coupling constant $λ$. We show that in the supercritical case the spectrum covers the whole real axis. In contrast, for $λ$ below the critical value the spectrum is purely discrete and we establish a Lieb-Thirring-type bound on its moments. In the critical case the essential spectrum covers the positive halfline while the negative spectrum can be only discrete, we demonstrate numeric…
We show that the Lieb-Thirring inequalities on moments of negative eigenvalues of Schroedinger-like operators remain true, with possibly different constants, when the critical Hardy-weight $C|x|^{-2}$ is subtracted from the Laplace operator. We do so by first establishing a Sobolev inequality for such operators. Similar results are true for fractional powers of the Laplacian and the Hardy-weight and, in particular, for relativistic Schroedinger operators. We also allow for the inclusion of magnetic vector potentials. As an application, we extend, for the first time, the proof of stability of r…
We study Schroedinger operators with random edge weights and their expected spectral measures $μ_H$ near zero. We prove that the measure exhibits a spike of the form $μ_H(-\varepsilon,\varepsilon) \sim \frac{C}{| \log\varepsilon|^2}$ (first observed by Dyson), without assuming independence or any regularity of edge weights. We also identify the limiting local eigenvalue distribution, which is different from Poisson and the usual random matrix statistics. We then use the result to compute Novikov-Shubin invariants for various groups, including lamplighter groups and lattices in the Lie group So…
Let $S\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ be a $C^4$-smooth relatively compact orientable surface with a sufficiently regular boundary. For $β\in\mathbb{R}_+$, let $E_j(β)$ denote the $j$th negative eigenvalue of the operator associated with the quadratic form \[ H^1(\mathbb{R}^3)\ni u\mapsto \iiint_{\mathbb{R}^3} |\nabla u|^2dx -β\iint_S |u|^2dσ, \] where $σ$ is the two-dimensional Hausdorff measure on $S$. We show that for each fixed $j$ one has the asymptotic expansion \[ E_j(β)=-\dfrac{β^2}{4}+μ^D_j+ o(1) \;\text{ as }\; β\to+\infty\,, \] where $μ_j^D$ is the $j$th eigenvalue of the operator $-Δ_S+K-M^2$…
