We investigate the ill-posedness mechanism of the hard-sphere Boltzmann equation in $H_{x}^{s}$ Sobolev space. Via a direct construction, we prove a strong-weak type ill-posedness result in the low-regularity regime $s<1$, establishing a sharp threshold in connection to the local $s>1$ well-posedness result [11]. Instead of originating from the large-velocity growth of the collision kernel, this illposedness is generated by the loss term and dispersive effects. Consequently, we prove a dispersion-driven nonlinear instability mechanism for the hard-sphere Boltzmann equation, and provide a capstone of the ill-posedness series [18,20].
This article provides sharp constructive upper and lower bound estimates for the non-linear Boltzmann collision operator with the full range of physical non cut-off collision kernels ($γ> -n$ and $s\in (0,1)$) in the trilinear $L^2(\R^n)$ energy $<\mathcal{Q}(g,f),f>$. These new estimates prove that, for a very general class of $g(v)$, the global diffusive behavior (on $f$) in the energy space is that of the geometric fractional derivative semi-norm identified in the linearized context in our earlier works [2009, 2010, 2010 arXiv:1011.5441v1]. We further prove new global entropy production est…
We consider a semiclassical linear Boltzmann model with a non local collision operator. We provide sharp spectral asymptotics for the small spectrum in the low temperature regime from which we deduce the rate of return to equilibrium as well as a metastability result. The main ingredients are resolvent estimates obtained via hypocoercive techniques and the construction of sharp Gaussian quasimodes through an adaptation of the WKB method.
In this work, we study the Cauchy problem for the spatially homogeneous non-cutoff Boltzamnn equation with Maxwellian molecules. We prove that this Cauchy problem enjoys Gelfand-Shilov regularizing effect, that means the smoothing properties is same as the Cauchy problem defined by the evolution equation associated to a fractional harmonic oscillator. The power of this fractional is exactly the singular index of non-cutoff collisional kernel of Boltzmann operator. So that we get the regularity of solution in the Gevery class with the sharp power and the optimal exponential decay of solutions. …
We prove the sharp regularizing estimates for the gain term of the Boltzmann collision operator including hard sphere, hard potential and Maxwell molecule models. Our new estimates characterize both regularization and convolution properties of the gain term and have the following features. The regularizing exponent is sharp both in the $L^2$ based inhomogeneous and homogeneous Sobolev spaces which is exact the exponent of the kinetic part of collision kernel. The functions in these estimates belong to a wider scope of (weighted) Lebesgue spaces than the previous regularizing estimates. Further…
We prove the well-posedness for the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation with soft potentials when the initial datum is close to the {\it global Maxwellian} and has only polynomial decay at the large velocities in $L^2$ space. As a result, we get the {\it propagation of the exponential moments} and the {\it sharp rates} of the convergence to the {\it global Maxwellian} which seems the first results for the original equation with soft potentials. The new ingredients of the proof lie in localized techniques, the semigroup method as well as the propagation of the polynomial and exponential moments in $L…
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for the linear spatially homogeneous Boltzamnn equation with Debye-Yukawa potential. Using the spectral decomposition of the linear operator, we prove that, for an initial datum in the sense of distribution which contains the dual of the Sobolev spaces, there exists a unique solution which belongs to a more regular Sobolev space for any positive time. We also study the sharp regularity of the solution.
The aim of the work is to provide a stable method to get sharp bounds for Boltzmann and Landau operators in weighted Sobolev spaces and in anisotropic spaces. All the sharp bounds are given for the original Boltzmann and Landau operators. The sharpness means the lower and upper bounds for the operators are consistent with the behavior of the linearized operators. Moreover, we make clear the difference between the bounds for the original operators and those for the linearized ones. According to the Bobylev's formula, we introduce two types of dyadic decompositions performed in both phase and fr…
We consider the $n$-dimensional space homogeneous Boltzmann equation for elastic collisions for variable hard potentials with Grad (angular) cutoff. We prove sharp moment inequalities, the propagation of $L^1$-Maxwellian weighted estimates, and consequently, the propagation $L^\infty$-Maxwellian weighted estimates to all derivatives of the initial value problem associated to the afore mentioned problem. More specifically, we extend to all derivatives of the initial value problem associated to this class of Boltzmann equations corresponding sharp moment (Povzner) inequalities and time propagati…
Using a weighted $H^s$-contraction mapping argument based on the macro-micro decomposition of Liu and Yu, we give an elementary proof of existence, with sharp rates of decay and distance from the Chapman--Enskog approximation, of small-amplitude shock profiles of the Boltzmann equation with hard-sphere potential, recovering and slightly sharpening results obtained by Caflisch and Nicolaenko using different techniques. A key technical point in both analyses is that the linearized collision operator $L$ is negative definite on its range, not only in the standard square-root Maxwellian weighted n…
We study the Boltzmann equation for a mixture of two gases in one space dimension with initial condition of one gas near vacuum and the other near a Maxwellian equilibrium state. A qualitative-quantitative mathematical analysis is developed to study this mass diffusion problem based on the Green's function of the Boltzmann equation for the single species hard sphere collision model as developed in work of Liu and Yu. The cross species resonance of the mass diffusion and the diffusion-sound wave is investigated. An exponentially sharp global solution is obtained.
This paper is concerned with the relativistic Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. The non-cutoff theory for the relativistic Boltzmann equation has been rarely studied even under a smallness assumption on the initial data due to the lack of understanding of the spectrum and the need for coercivity estimates on the linearized collision operator. Namely, it is crucial to obtain the sharp asymptotics for the frequency multiplier to obtain this coercivity that has never been established before. In this paper, we prove the sharp asymptotics for the frequency multiplier for a general relativi…
This article proves the regularity for the Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff with hard potential. By sharpening the coercivity and upper bound estimate on the collision operator, analyzing the Poisson bracket between the transport operator and some weighted pseudo-differential operator, we prove the regularizing effect in space and velocity variables when the initial data has mild regularity.
A semiconductor Boltzmann equation with a non-linear BGK-type collision operator is analyzed for a cloud of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice: \[ \partial_t f + \nabla_pε(p)\cdot\nabla_x f - \nabla_x n_f\cdot\nabla_p f = n_f(1- n_f)(\mathcal{F}_f-f), \quad x\in\mathbb{R}^d, p\in\mathbb{T}^d, t>0. \] This system contains an interaction potential $n_f(x,t):=\int_{\mathbb{T}^d}f(x,p,t)dp$ being significantly more singular than the Coulomb potential, which is used in the Vlasov-Poisson system. This causes major structural difficulties in the analysis. Furthermore, $ε(p) = -\sum_{i=1}^d$ $\cos(…
This article presents a new approach of semigroup analysis and pseudo-differential calculus for deriving the regularizing estimate on non-cutoff linearized Boltzmann equation. We are able to obtain regularizing estimate of semigroup $e^{tB}$ that is continuous from weighted Sobolev space $H(a^{-1/2})H^m_x$ to $H(a^{1/2})H^m_x$ with a sharp large time decay. With these properties, we prove the existence of global-in-time unique solution to the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation for hard potential on the whole space with weak regularity assumption on initial data. We consider the hard potential case …
In this paper, we study the generalized polynomial chaos (gPC) based stochastic Galerkin method for the linear semiconductor Boltzmann equation under diffusive scaling and with random inputs from an anisotropic collision kernel and the random initial condition. While the numerical scheme and the proof of uniform-in-Knudsen-number regularity of the distribution function in the random space has been introduced in [Jin-Liu-16'], the main goal of this paper is to first obtain a sharper estimate on the regularity of the solution-an exponential decay towards its local equilibrium, which then lead to…
We study integrability properties of a general version of the Boltzmann collision operator for hard and soft potentials in $n$-dimensions. A reformulation of the collisional integrals allows us to write the weak form of the collision operator as a weighted convolution, where the weight is given by an operator invariant under rotations. Using a symmetrization technique in $L^p$ we prove a Young's inequality for hard potentials, which is sharp for Maxwell molecules in the $L^2$ case. Further, we find a new Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev type of inequality for Boltzmann collision integrals with soft po…
The Boltzmann equation without Grad's angular cutoff assumption is believed to have regularizing effect on the solution because of the non-integrable angular singularity of the cross-section. However, even though so far this has been justified satisfactorily for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation, it is still basically unsolved for the spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation. In this paper, by sharpening the coercivity and upper bound estimates for the collision operator, establishing the hypo-ellipticity of the Boltzmann operator based on a generalized version of the uncertainty …
The paper considers the convergence to equilibrium for measure solutions of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for hard potentials with angular cutoff. We prove the exponential sharp rate of strong convergence to equilibrium for conservative measure solutions having finite mass and energy. The proof is based on the regularizing property of the iterated collision operators, exponential moment production estimates, and some previous results on the exponential rate of strong convergence to equilibrium for square integrable initial data. We also obtain a lower bound of the convergence ra…
A basic question about the existence and stability of the Boltzmann equation in general non-convex domain with the specular reflection boundary condition has been widely open. In this paper, we consider cylindrical domains whose cross sections are general non-convex analytic planar domain. We establish the global-wellposedness and asymptotic stability of the Boltzmann equation with the specular reflection boundary condition in such domains. Our method consists of sharp classification of billiard trajectories which bounce infinitely many times or hit the boundary tangentially at some moment, an…
We show the ill-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the Dirac-Klein-Gordon system in one dimension in the critical Sobolev space. From this, we finish the classification of the regularities for which this problem is well-posed or ill-posed.
We provide a comprehensive analysis of sharp bilinear estimates of Ozawa-Tsutsumi type for solutions u of the free Schrödinger equation, which give sharp control on $|u|^2$ in classical Sobolev spaces. In particular, we provide a generalization of their estimates in such a way that provides a unification with some sharp bilinear estimates proved by Carneiro and Planchon-Vega, via entirely different methods, by seeing them all as special cases of a one parameter family of sharp estimates. We show that the extremal functions are solutions of the Maxwell-Boltzmann functional equation and provide …
We prove the unique existence and exponential decay of global in time classical solutions to the special relativistic Boltzmann equation without any angular cut-off assumptions with initial perturbations in some weighted Sobolev spaces. We consider perturbations of the relativistic Maxwellian equilibrium states. We work in the case of a spatially periodic box. We consider the general conditions on the collision kernel from Dudyński and Ekiel-Jeźewska (Commun Math Phys \textbf{115}(4):607--629, 1985). Additionally, we prove sharp constructive upper and coercive lower bounds for the linearized r…
We consider the Cauchy problem associated to the recently derived higher order hamiltonian model for unidirectional water waves and prove global existence for given data in the Sobolev space $H^s$, $s\geq 1$. We also prove an ill-posedness result by showing that the flow-map is not continuous if the given data has Sobolev regularity $s< 1$. The results obtained in this work are sharp.
We establish existence with sharp rates of decay and distance from the Chapman--Enskog approximation of small-amplitude shock profiles of a class of semilinear relaxation systems including discrete velocity models obtained from Boltzmann and other kinetic equations. Our method of analysis is based on the macro--micro decomposition introduced by Liu and Yu for the study of Boltzmann profiles, but applied to the stationary rather than the time-evolutionary equations. This yields a simple proof by contraction mapping in weighted $H^s$ spaces.
In this paper we analyze a Boltzmann type mean field game model for knowledge growth, which was proposed by Lucas and Moll. We discuss the underlying mathematical model, which consists of a coupled system of a Boltzmann type equation for the agent density and a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation for the optimal strategy. We study the analytic features of each equation separately and show local in time existence and uniqueness for the fully coupled system. Furthermore we focus on the construction and existence of special solutions, which relate to exponential growth in time - so called balanced g…
This work is concerned about the Cauchy problem for the following generalized KdV- Burgers equation \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{array}{l} \partial_tu+\partial_x^3u+L_pu+u\partial_xu=0, u(0,\,x)=u_0(x). \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $L_p$ is a dissipative multiplicator operator. Using Besov-Bourgain Spaces, we establish a bilinear estimate and following the framework developed in Molinet, L. & Vento, S. (2011) we prove sharp global well-posedness in the Sobolev spaces $H^{-p/2}(I\!\!R)$ and sharp ill-posedness in $H^s(I\!\!R)$ when $s<-p/2$ with $p \geq 2$.
This paper is concerned with the relativistic Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. We establish the global-in-time existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic stability for solutions nearby the relativistic Maxwellian. We work in the case of a spatially periodic box. We assume the generic hard-interaction and soft-interaction conditions on the collision kernel that were derived by Dudyński and Ekiel-Je$\dot{\text{z}}$ewska (Comm. Math. Phys. \textbf{115}(4):607--629, 1985), and our assumptions include the case of Israel particles (J. Math. Phys. \textbf{4}:1163--1181, 1963). In this physical s…
We provide a rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann equation as the mesoscopic limit of systems of hard spheres, or Newtonian particles interacting via a short-range potential, as the number of particles $N$ goes to infinity and the characteristic length of interaction $\e$ simultaneously goes to $0,$ in the Boltzmann-Grad scaling $N \e^{d-1} \equiv 1.$ The time of validity of the convergence is a fraction of the average time of first collision, due to a limitation of the time on which one can prove uniform estimates for the BBGKY and Boltzmann hierarchies. Our proof relies on the fundamental id…
We present an abstract method for deriving decay estimates on the resolvents and semigroups of non-symmetric operators in Banach spaces in terms of estimates in another smaller reference Banach space. This applies to a class of operators writing as a regularizing part, plus a dissipative part. The core of the method is a high-order quantitative factorization argument on the resolvents and semigroups. We then apply this approach to the Fokker-Planck equation, to the kinetic Fokker- Planck equation in the torus, and to the linearized Boltzmann equation in the torus. We finally use this informati…
In this paper we propose and study a new kinetic rating model for a large number of players, which is motivated by the well-known Elo rating system. Each player is characterised by an intrinsic strength and a rating, which are both updated after each game. We state and analyse the respective Boltzmann type equation and derive the corresponding nonlinear, nonlocal Fokker-Planck equation. We investigate the existence of solutions to the Fokker-Planck equation and discuss their behaviour in the long time limit. Furthermore, we illustrate the dynamics of the Boltzmann and Fokker-Planck equation wi…
We establish a new a priori bound for $ L^2 $-bounded sequences of solutions to the mKdV equations on the torus. This first enable us to construct weak solutions in $ L^2$ for this equation and to check that the "solutions" constructed by Kappeler and Topalov in the defocusing case satisfy the equation in some weak sense. In a second time, we prove that the solution-map associated with the mKdV and the KdV equation are discontinuous for the $ H^s(\T) $ topology for respectively $ s<0$ and $ s<-1$. These last results are sharp.
In this work we prove global stability for the Boltzmann equation (1872) with the physical collision kernels derived by Maxwell in 1866 for the full range of inverse power intermolecular potentials, $r^{-(p-1)}$ with $p>2$. This completes the work which we began in (arXiv:0912.0888v1). We more generally cover collision kernels with parameters $s\in (0,1)$ and $γ$ satisfying $γ> -(n-2)-2s$ in arbitrary dimensions $\mathbb{T}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\ge 2$. Moreover, we prove rapid convergence as predicted by the Boltzmann H-Theorem. When $γ+ 2s \ge 0$, we have exponential time decay to th…
We consider a mono-dimensional two-velocities scheme used to approximate the solutions of a scalar hyperbolic conservative partial differential equation. We prove the convergence of the discrete solution toward the unique entropy solution by first estimating the supremum norm and the total variation of the discrete solution, and second by constructing a discrete kinetic entropy-entropy flux pair being given a continuous entropy-entropy flux pair of the hyperbolic system. We finally illustrate our results with numerical simulations of the advection equation and the Burgers equation.
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for the generalized Camassa-Holm equation that includes the Camassa-Holm as well as the Novikov equation on the line. We present a new and unified method to prove the sharp ill-posedness for the generalized Camassa-Holm equation in $B^s_{p,\infty}$ with $s>\max\{1+1/p, 3/2\}$ and $1\leq p\leq\infty$ in the sense that the solution map to this equation starting from $u_0$ is discontinuous at $t = 0$ in the metric of $B^s_{p,\infty}$. Our results cover and improve the previous work given in [J. Li, Y. Yu, W. Zhu, Ill-posedness for the Camassa-Holm and…
The Maxwell-Dirac equations in one space dimension are proved to be well posed in the charge class, that is, with $L^2$ data for the spinor. We also prove that this result is sharp, in the sense that well-posedness fails for spinor data in $H^s$ with $s<0$, as well as in $L^p$ with $1 \le p < 2$. More precisely, we give an explicit example of such data for which no local solution can exist. Our proof of well-posedness applies to a class of systems which includes also the Dirac-Klein-Gordon system, but it does not require any null structure in the system.
We study well-posedness and ill-posedness for Cauchy problem of the three-dimensional viscous primitive equations describing the large scale ocean and atmosphere dynamics. By using the Littlewood-Paley analysis technique, in particular Chemin-Lerner's localization method, we prove that the Cauchy problem with Prandtl number $P=1$ is locally well-posed in the Fourier-Besov spaces $[\dot{FB}^{2-\frac{3}{p}}_{p,r}(\mathbb{R}^3)]^4$ for $1<p\leq\infty,1\leq r<\infty$ and $[\dot{FB}^{-1}_{1,r}(\mathbb{R}^3)]^4$ for $1\leq r\leq 2$, and globally well-posed in these spaces when the initial data $(u_0…
We establish that the quadratic non-linear Schrödinger equation $$ iu_t + u_{xx} = u^2$$ where $u: \R \times \R \to \C$, is locally well-posed in $H^s(\R)$ when $s \geq -1$ and ill-posed when $s < -1$. Previous work of Kenig, Ponce and Vega had established local well-posedness for $s > -3/4$. The local well-posedness is achieved by an iteration using a modification of the standard $X^{s,b}$ spaces. The ill-posedness uses an abstract and general argument relying on the high-to-low frequency cascade present in the non-linearity, and a computation of the first non-linear iterate.
We prove that the Navier-Stokes initial value problem is well-posed in the logrithmically refined Besov spaces when the second index is not less than certain critical value, and ill-posed in such spaces when the second index is less than this critical value. The well-posedness result is proved by using some sharp bilinear estimates obtained from some Hardy-Littlewood type inequalities. The ill-posedness assertion is proved by refining the arguments of Wang [18] and Yoneda [20].
We prove the discontinuity for the weak $ L^2(\T) $-topology of the flow-map associated with the periodic Benjamin-Ono equation. This ensures that this equation is ill-posed in $ H^s(\T) $ as soon as $ s<0 $ and thus completes exactly the well-posedness result obtained by the author.
We prove that the KdV-Burgers is globally well-posed in $ H^{-1}(\T) $ with a solution-map that is analytic from $H^{-1}(\T) $ to $C([0,T];H^{-1}(\T))$ whereas it is ill-posed in $ H^s(\T) $, as soon as $ s<-1 $, in the sense that the flow-map $u_0\mapsto u(t) $ cannot be continuous from $ H^s(\T) $ to even ${\cal D}'(\T) $ at any fixed $ t>0 $ small enough. In view of the result of Kappeler and Topalov for KdV it thus appears that even if the dissipation part of the KdV-Burgers equation allows to lower the $ C^\infty $ critical index with respect to the KdV equation, it does not permit to imp…
This work proves the global stability of the Boltzmann equation (1872) with the physical collision kernels derived by Maxwell in 1866 for the full range of inverse-power intermolecular potentials, $r^{-(p-1)}$ with $p>2$, for initial perturbations of the Maxwellian equilibrium states, as announced in \cite{gsNonCutA}. We more generally cover collision kernels with parameters $s\in (0,1)$ and $γ$ satisfying $γ> -n$ in arbitrary dimensions $\mathbb{T}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\ge 2$. Moreover, we prove rapid convergence as predicted by the celebrated Boltzmann $H$-theorem. When $γ\ge -2s$, …
We study the Cauchy problem of the incompressible micropolar fluid system in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. In a recent work of the first author and Jihong Zhao \cite{ZhuZ18}, it is proved that the Cauchy problem of the incompressible micropolar fluid system is locally well-posed in the Fourier--Besov spaces $\F^{2-\frac{3}{p}}_{p,r}$ for $1<p\leq\infty$ and $1\leq r<\infty$, and globally well-posed in these spaces with small initial data. In this work we consider the critical case $p=1$. We show that this problem is locally well-posed in $\F^{-1}_{1,r}$ for $1\leq r\leq 2$, and is globally well-posed in t…
We complete the known results on the local Cauchy problem in Sobolev spaces for the KdV-Burgers equation by proving that this equation is well-posed in $ H^{-1}(\R) $ with a solution-map that is analytic from $H^{-1}(\R) $ to $C([0,T];H^{-1}(\R))$ whereas it is ill-posed in $ H^s(\R) $, as soon as $ s<-1 $, in the sense that the flow-map $u_0\mapsto u(t) $ cannot be continuous from $ H^s(\R) $ to even ${\cal D}'(\R) $ at any fixed $ t>0 $ small enough. As far as we know, this is the first result of this type for a dispersive-dissipative equation. The framework we develop here should be very us…
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for the higher-order KdV-type equation \begin{eqnarray*} u_{t}+(-1)^{j+1}\partial_{x}^{2j+1}u + \frac{1}{2}\partial_{x}(u^{2}) = 0,j\in N^{+},x\in\mathbf{T}= [0,2πλ) \end{eqnarray*} with low regularity data and $λ\geq 1$. Firstly, we show that the Cauchy problem for the periodic higher-order KdV equation is locally well-posed in $H^{s}(\mathbf{T})$ with $s\geq -j+\frac{1}{2},j\geq2.$ By using some new Strichartz estimate and some new function spaces, we also show that the Cauchy problem for the periodic higher-order KdV equation is ill-posed in …
We study the initial value problem of the quadratic nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$ iu_t+u_{xx}=u\bar{u}, $$ where $u:\R\times \R\to \C$. We prove that it's locally well-posed in $H^s(\R)$ when $s\geq -\dfrac{1}{4}$ and ill-posed when $s< -\dfrac{1}{4}$, which improve the previous work in \cite{KPV}. Moreover, we consider the problem in the following space, $$ H^{s,a}(\R)={u:\|u\|_{H^{s,a}}\triangleq (\displaystyle\int (|ξ|^sχ_{\{|ξ|>1\}}+|ξ|^aχ_{\{|ξ|\leq 1\}})^2|\hat{u}(ξ)|^2 dξ)^{1/2}<\infty} $$ for $s\leq 0, a\geq 0$. We establish the local well-posedness in $H^{s,a}(\R)$ when $s\geq -\d…
