The paper considers the convergence to equilibrium for measure solutions of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for hard potentials with angular cutoff. We prove the exponential sharp rate of strong convergence to equilibrium for conservative measure solutions having finite mass and energy. The proof is based on the regularizing property of the iterated collision operators, exponential moment production estimates, and some previous results on the exponential rate of strong convergence to equilibrium for square integrable initial data. We also obtain a lower bound of the convergence rate and deduce that no eternal solutions exist apart from the trivial stationary solutions given by the Maxwellian equilibrium. We finally use these convergence rates in order to deduce global-in-time strong stability of measure solutions.
We consider an inverse problem for the nonlinear Boltzmann equation near the equilibrium. Our goal is to determine the collision kernel in the Boltzmann equation from the knowledge of the Albedo operator. Our approach relies on a linearization technique as well as the injectivity of the Gauss-Weierstrass transform.
Anderson-Witting model is a relaxational model equation of the relativistic Boltzmann equation, which sees a wide application in physics. In this paper, we study the existence of classical solutions and its asymptotic behavior when the solution starts sufficiently close to a global relativistic Maxwellian.
The relativistic quantum Boltzmann equation (or the relativistic Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation) describes the dynamics of single-species fast-moving quantum particles. With the recent development of the relativistic quantum mechanics, the relativistic quantum Boltzmann equation has been widely used in physics and engineering such as in the quantum collision experiments and the simulations of electrons in graphene. In spite of such importance, there has been no mathematical theory on the existence of solutions for the relativistic quantum Boltzmann equation to the best of authors' knowledge. In th…
We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres (with constant restitution coefficient $α\in (0,1)$) under the thermalization induced by a host medium with a fixed Maxwellian distribution. We prove that the solution to the associated initial-value problem converges exponentially fast towards the unique equilibrium solution. The proof combines a careful spectral analysis of the linearised semigroup as well as entropy estimates. The trend towards equilibrium holds in the weakly inelastic regime in which $α$ is close to $1$, and the rate of convergence is expli…
In this paper we prove the strong and time-averaged strong convergence to equilibrium for solutions (with general initial data) of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for Fermi-Dirac particles. The assumption on the collision kernel includes the Coulomb potential with a weaker angular cutoff. The proof is based on moment estimates, entropy dissipation inequalities, regularity of the collision gain operator, and a new observation that many collision kernels are larger than or equal to some completely positive kernels, which enables us to avoid dealing with the convergence problem of th…
In this work we present several quantitative results of convergence to equilibrium for the linear Boltzmann operator with soft potentials under Grad's angular cutoff assumption. This is done by an adaptation of the famous entropy method and its variants, resulting in explicit algebraic, or even stretched exponential, rates of convergence to equilibrium under appropriate assumptions. The novelty in our approach is that it involves functional inequalities relating the entropy to its production rate, which have independent applications to equations with mixed linear and non-linear terms. We also …
This paper deals with the long time behavior of solutions to the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation. The interactions considered are the so-called (non cut-off and non mollified) hard potentials. We prove an exponential in time convergence towards the equilibrium, improving results of Villani from \cite{Vill1} where a polynomial decay to equilibrium is proven. The basis of the proof is the study of the linearized equation for which we prove a new spectral gap estimate in a $L^1$ space with a polynomial weight by taking advantage of the theory of enlargement of the functional space for th…
The Boltzmann H-theorem implies that the solution to the Boltzmann equation tends to an equilibrium, that is, a Maxwellian when time tends to infinity. This has been proved in varies settings when the initial energy is finite. However, when the initial energy is infinite, the time asymptotic state is no longer described by a Maxwellian, but a self-similar solution obtained by Bobylev-Cercignani. The purpose of this paper is to rigorously justify this for the spatially homogeneous problem with Maxwellian molecule type cross section without angular cutoff.
In this paper, we justify the convergence from the two-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (in briefly,VPB) system to the two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson (in briefly, NSFP) system with Ohm's law in the context of classical solutions. We prove the uniform estimates with respect to the Knudsen number $\varepsilon$ for the solutions to the two-species VPB system near equilibrium by treating the strong interspecies interactions. Consequently, we prove the convergence to the two-fluid incompressible NSFP as $\varepsilon$ go to 0.

We investigate the large time behavior of solutions to the spatially homogeneous linear Boltzmann equation from a semigroup viewpoint. Our analysis is performed in some (weighted) $L^{1}$-spaces. We deal with both the cases of hard and soft potentials (with angular cut-off). For hard potentials, we provide a new proof of the fact that, in weighted $L^{1}$-spaces with exponential or algebraic weights, the solutions converge exponentially fast towards equilibrium. Our approach uses weak-compactness arguments combined with recent results of the second author on positive semigroups in $L^{1}$-spac…
For the one-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system in the scaling under which the moments of the fluctuations formally converge to the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson (NSFP) system, we prove the uniform estimates with respect to the Knudsen number $ε$ for the fluctuations. As a consequence, the existence of the global-in-time classical solutions of VPB with all $ε\in (0,1]$ is established in whole space under small size of initial data, and the convergence to incompressible NSFP as $ε$ go to 0 is rigorously justified.
In this work, we are interested in the link between strong solutions of the Boltzmann and the Navier-Stokes equations. To justify this connection, our main idea is to use information on the limit system (for instance the fact that the Navier-Stokes equations are globally wellposed in two space dimensions or when the data are small). In particular we prove that the life span of the solutions to the rescaled Boltzmann equation is bounded from below by that of the Navier-Stokes system. We deal with general initial data in the whole space in dimensions 2 and 3, and also with well-prepared data in …
We prove the well-posedness for the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation with soft potentials when the initial datum is close to the {\it global Maxwellian} and has only polynomial decay at the large velocities in $L^2$ space. As a result, we get the {\it propagation of the exponential moments} and the {\it sharp rates} of the convergence to the {\it global Maxwellian} which seems the first results for the original equation with soft potentials. The new ingredients of the proof lie in localized techniques, the semigroup method as well as the propagation of the polynomial and exponential moments in $L…
In this paper, we study the generalized polynomial chaos (gPC) based stochastic Galerkin method for the linear semiconductor Boltzmann equation under diffusive scaling and with random inputs from an anisotropic collision kernel and the random initial condition. While the numerical scheme and the proof of uniform-in-Knudsen-number regularity of the distribution function in the random space has been introduced in [Jin-Liu-16'], the main goal of this paper is to first obtain a sharper estimate on the regularity of the solution-an exponential decay towards its local equilibrium, which then lead to…
It is expected in physics that the homogeneous quantum Boltzmann equation with Fermi-Dirac or Bose-Einstein statistics and with Maxwell-Boltzmann operator (neglecting effect of the statistics) for the weak coupled gases will converge to the homogeneous Fokker-Planck-Landau equation as the Planck constant $\hbar$ tends to zero. In this paper and the upcoming work \cite{HLP2}, we will provide a mathematical justification on this semi-classical limit. Key ingredients into the proofs are the new framework to catch the {\it weak projection gradient}, which is motivated by Villani \cite{V1} to ident…
This work is devoted to the analysis of the linear Boltzmann equation in a bounded domain, in the presence of a force deriving from a potential. The collision operator is allowed to be degenerate in the following two senses: (1) the associated collision kernel may vanish in a large subset of the phase space; (2) we do not assume that it is bounded below by a Maxwellian at infinity in velocity. We study how the association of transport and collision phenomena can lead to convergence to equilibrium, using concepts and ideas from control theory. We prove two main classes of results. On the one ha…
In this paper, we consider the global well-posedness to the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation with soft potential in the $L^\infty$ setting. We show that when the initial data is close to equilibrium and the perturbation is small in $L^2 \cap L^\infty$ polynomial weighted space, the Boltzmann equation has a global solution in the weighted $L^2 \cap L^\infty$ space. The ingredients of the proof lie in strong averaging lemma, new polynomial weighted estimate for the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation and the $L^2$ level set Di Giorgi iteration method developed in \cite{AMSY2}. The convergence to the equi…
In the present paper, we study the diffusion limit of the classical solution to the unipolar Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system with initial data near a global Maxwellian. We prove the convergence and establish the convergence rate of the global strong solution to the unipolar VPB system towards the solution to an incompressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson-Fourier system based on the spectral analysis with precise estimation on the initial layer.
In [L. Liu and S. Jin, Multiscale Model. Simult., 16, 1085-1114, 2018], spectral convergence and long-time decay of the numerical solution towards the global equilibrium of the stochastic Galerkin approximation for the Boltzmann equation with random inputs in the initial data and collision kernel for hard potentials and Maxwellian molecules under Grad's angular cutoff were established using the hypocoercive properties of the collisional kinetic model. One assumption for the random perturbation of the collision kernel is that the perturbation is in the order of the Knudsen number, which can be …
We revisit the grazing collision limit connecting the Boltzmann equation to the Landau(-Fokker-Planck) equation from their recent reinterpretations as gradient flows. Our results are in the same spirit as the $Γ$-convergence of gradient flows technique introduced by Sandier and Serfaty. In this setting, the grazing collision limit reduces to showing the lower semi-continuous convergence of the Boltzmann entropy-dissipation to the Landau entropy-dissipation.
We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard-spheres (with constant restitution coefficient $α\in (0,1)$) under the thermalization induced by a host medium with a fixed Maxwellian distribution. We prove uniqueness of the stationary solution (with given mass) in the weakly inelastic regime; i.e., for any inelasticity parameter $α\in (α_0,1)$, with some constructive $α_0 \in [0, 1)$. Our analysis is based on a perturbative argument which uses the knowledge of the stationary solution in the elastic limit and quantitative estimates of the convergence of stationary so…
We consider a space-homogeneous gas of {\it inelastic hard spheres}, with a {\it diffusive term} representing a random background forcing (in the framework of so-called {\em constant normal restitution coefficients} $α\in [0,1]$ for the inelasticity). In the physical regime of a small inelasticity (that is $α\in [α_*,1)$ for some constructive $α_* \in [0,1)$) we prove uniqueness of the stationary solution for given values of the restitution coefficient $α\in [α_*,1)$, the mass and the momentum, and we give various results on the linear stability and nonlinear stability of this stationary solut…
It is challenging to perform a multiscale analysis of mesoscopic systems exhibiting singularities at the macroscopic scale. In this paper, we study the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equations $$\mathrm{St} \partial_t F + v\cdot \nabla_x F = \frac{1}{\mathrm{Kn}} Q(F ,F ) $$ toward the singular solutions of 2D incompressible Euler equations whose vorticity is unbounded $$\partial_t u + u \cdot \nabla_x u + \nabla_x p = 0,\text{div }u =0.$$ We obtain a microscopic description of the singularity through the so-called kinetic vorticity and understand its behavior in the vicinity of the macro…
The purpose of this paper is to show how the combination of the well-known results for convergence to equilibrium and conditional regularity, in addition to a short-time existence result, lead to a quick proof of the existence of global smooth solutions for the non cutoff Boltzmann equation when the initial data is close to equilibrium. We include a short-time existence result for polynomially-weighted $L^\infty$ initial data. From this, we deduce that if the initial data is sufficiently close to a Maxwellian in this norm, then a smooth solution exists globally in time.
In the present paper, we consider the initial value problem for the bipolar Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (bVPB) system and its corresponding modified Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (mVPB). We give the spectrum analysis on the linearized bVPB and mVPB systems around their equilibrium state and show the optimal convergence rate of global solutions. It was showed that the electric field decays exponentially and the distribution function tends to the absolute Maxwellian at the optimal convergence rate $(1+t)^{-3/4}$ for the bVPB system, yet both the electric field and the distribution function converge to e…
For the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with hard po- tentials and Grad's cutoff (e.g. hard spheres), we give quantitative estimates of exponential convergence to equilibrium, and we show that the rate of exponential decay is governed by the spectral gap for the linearized equation, on which we provide a lower bound. Our approach is based on establishing spectral gap-like estimates valid near the equilibrium, and then connecting the latter to the quantitative nonlinear theory. This leads us to an explicit study of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator in functional spaces larger…
The spectrum structure of the linearized relativistic Boltzmann equation around a global Maxwellian is studied in this paper. Based on the spectrum analysis, we establish the optimal time-convergence rates of the global solution to the Cauchy problem for the relativistic Boltzmann equation.
We show the existence of smooth stationary solutions for the inelastic Boltzmann equation under the thermalization induced by a host-medium with a fixed distribution. This is achieved by controlling the Lp-norms, the moments and the regularity of the solutions for the Cauchy problem together with arguments related to a dynamical proof for the existence of stationary states.
We study a hard sphere gas at equilibrium, and prove that in the low density limit, the fluctuations converge to a Gaussian process governed by the fluctuating Boltzmann equation. This result holds for arbitrarily long times. The method of proof builds upon the weak convergence method introduced in the companion paper [8] which is improved by considering clusters of pseudo-trajectories as in [7].
We consider the Boltzmann operator for mixtures with cutoff Maxwellian, hard potentials, or hard spheres collision kernels. In a perturbative regime around the global Maxwellian equilibrium, the linearized Boltzmann multi-species operator $\mathbf{L}$ is known to possess an explicit spectral gap $λ_{\mathbf{L}}$, in the global equilibrium weighted $L^2$ space. We study a new operator $\mathbf{L^\varepsilon}$ obtained by linearizing the Boltzmann operator for mixtures around local Maxwellian distributions, where all the species evolve with different small macroscopic velocities of order $\varep…
We consider an approximation of the linearised equation of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation that describes the distribution of quasiparticles in a dilute gas of bosons at low temperature. The corresponding collision frequency is neither bounded from below nor from above. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions satisfying the conservation of energy. We show that these solutions converge to the corresponding stationary state, at an algebraic rate as time tends to infinity.
We prove the stability of global equilibrium in a multi-species mixture, where the different species can have different masses, on the $3$-dimensional torus. We establish stability estimates in $L^\infty_{x,v}(w)$ where $w=w(v)$ is either polynomial or exponential, with explicit threshold. Along the way we extend recent estimates and stability results for the mono-species Boltzmann operator not only to the multi-species case but also to more general hard potential and Maxwellian kernels.
We review various contributions on the fundamental work of Lanford deriving the Boltzmann equation from hard-sphere dynamics in the low density limit. We focus especially on the assumptions made on the initial data and on how they encode irreversibility. The impossibility to reverse time in the Boltzmann equation (expressed for instance by Boltzmann's H-theorem) is related to the lack of convergence of higher order marginals on some singular sets. Explicit counterexamples single out the microscopic sets where the initial data should converge in order to produce the Boltzmann dynamics.
We consider solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a potential localised at the points of a Poisson process. We prove convergence of the phase-space distribution in the annealed Boltzmann-Grad limit to a semiclassical Wigner (or defect) measure and show that it is a solution of the linear Boltzmann equation. Our results hold for a large class of square-integrable initial data associated to Wigner measures, including Langragian states, WKB states and coherent states. This extends important previous work by Eng and Erdős.
When the temperature of a trapped Bose gas is below the Bose-Einstein transition temperature and above absolute zero, the gas is composed of two distinct components: the Bose-Einstein condensate and the cloud of thermal excitations. The dynamics of the excitations can be described by quantum Boltzmann models. We establish a connection between quantum Boltzmann models and chemical reaction networks. We prove that the discrete differential equations for these quantum Boltzmann models converge to an equilibrium point. Moreover, this point is unique for all initial conditions that satisfy the same…
We consider the rate of convergence of solutions of spatially inhomogenous Boltzmann equations, with hard sphere potentials, to some equilibriums, called Maxwellians. Maxwellians are spatially homogenous static Maxwell velocity distributions with different temperatures and mean velocities. We study solutions in weighted space $L^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{3}\times \mathbb{T}^3)$. We prove a conjecture of C. Villani: assume the solution is sufficiently localized and sufficiently smooth, then the solution, in $L^{1}$-space, converges to a Maxwellian, exponentially fast in time.
We consider a class of nonlinear Boltzmann equations describing return to thermal equilibrium in a gas of colliding particles suspended in a thermal medium. We study solutions in the space $L^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{3}\times \mathbb{T}^3).$ Special solutions of these equations, called "Maxwellians," are spatially homogenous static Maxwell velocity distributions at the temperature of the medium. We prove that, for dilute gases, the solutions corresponding to smooth initial conditions in a weighted $L^{1}$-space converge to a Maxwellian in $L^{1},$ exponentially fast in time.
We consider a mono-dimensional two-velocities scheme used to approximate the solutions of a scalar hyperbolic conservative partial differential equation. We prove the convergence of the discrete solution toward the unique entropy solution by first estimating the supremum norm and the total variation of the discrete solution, and second by constructing a discrete kinetic entropy-entropy flux pair being given a continuous entropy-entropy flux pair of the hyperbolic system. We finally illustrate our results with numerical simulations of the advection equation and the Burgers equation.
This paper studies the quantum lattice Boltzmann scheme for the nonlinear Dirac equations for Gross-Neveu model in $1+1$ dimensions. The initial data for the scheme are assumed to be convergent in $L^2$. Then for any $T\ge 0$ the corresponding solutions for the quantum lattice Boltzmann scheme are shown to be convergent in $C([0,T];L^2(R^1))$ to the strong solution to the nonlinear Dirac equations as the mesh sizes converge to zero. In the proof, at first a Glimm type functional is introduced to establish the stability estimates for the difference between two solutions for the corresponding qu…
In rotationally symmetric domains, the Boltzmann equation with specular reflection boundary condition has a special type of equilibrium states called the rotational local Maxwellian which, unlike the uniform Maxwellian, has an additional term related to the angular momentum of the gas. In this paper, we consider the initial boundary value problem of the Boltzmann equation near the rotational local Maxwellian. Based on the L2-L1 framework of [12], we establish the global well-posedness and the convergence toward such equilibrium states.
We study the Cauchy theory for a multi-species mixture, where the different species can have different masses, in a perturbative setting on the $3$-dimensional torus. The ultimate aim of this work is to obtain existence, uniqueness and exponential trend to equilibrium of solutions to the multi-species Boltzmann equation in $L^1_vL^\infty_x(m)$, where $m\sim (1+|v|^k)$ is a polynomial weight. We prove the existence of a spectral gap for the linear multi-species Boltzmann operator allowing different masses, and then we establish a semigroup property thanks to a new explicit coercive estimate for…
Numerical approximation of the Boltzmann equation is a challenging problem due to its high-dimensional, nonlocal, and nonlinear collision integral. Over the past decade, the Fourier-Galerkin spectral method has become a popular deterministic method for solving the Boltzmann equation, manifested by its high accuracy and potential of being further accelerated by the fast Fourier transform. Albeit its practical success, the stability of the method is only recently proved by Filbet, F. & Mouhot, C. in [$ Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.$ 363, no. 4 (2011): 1947-1980.] by utilizing the "spreading" property …
This paper studies convergence to equilibrium for the spatially inhomogeneous linear relaxation Boltzmann equation in Boltzmann entropy and related entropy functionals the $p$-entropies. Villani proved in \cite{V09} entropic hypocoercivity for a class of PDEs in a Hörmander sum of squares form. It was an open question to prove such a result for an operator which does not share this form. We show exponentially fast convergence to equilibrium with explicit rate in entropy for a linear relaxation Boltzmann equation. The key new idea appearing in our proof is the use of a total derivative of the e…
