Recently, a new class of semi-Lagrangian methods for the BGK model of the Boltzmann equation has been introduced [8, 17, 18]. These methods work in a satisfactory way either in rarefied or fluid regime. Moreover, because of the semi-Lagrangian feature, the stability property is not restricted by the CFL condition. These aspects make them very attractive for practical applications. In this paper, we investigate the convergence properties of the method and prove that the discrete solution of the scheme converges in a weighted L1 norm to the unique smooth solution by deriving an explicit error estimate.
The ellipsoidal BGK model (ES-BGK) is a generalized version of the BGK model of the Boltzmann equation designed to yield the correct Prandtl number in the Navier-Stokes limit. In this paper, we make two observations on the entropy production functional of the ES-BGK model. First, we show that the Cercignani type estimate holds for the ES-BGK model in the whole range of parameter $-1/2<ν<1$. Secondly, we observe that the ellipsoidal relaxation operator satisfies an unexpected sign-definite property. Some implications of these observations are also discussed.
In this paper, we are interested in the Cauchy problem for the Boltzmann-BGK model for a general class of collision frequencies. We prove that the Boltzmann-BGK model linearized around a global Maxwellian admits a unique global smooth solution if the initial perturbation is sufficiently small in a high order energy norm. We also establish an asymptotic decay estimate and uniform $L^2$-stability for nonlinear perturbations.
Incompressible Navier-Stokes limit of non-bilinear kinetic equations and application to the BGK, nonlinear Fokker-Planck and Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equations
Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) equation is a relaxation model of the Boltzmann equation which is widely used in place of the Boltzmann equation for the simulation of various kinetic flow problems. In this work, we study the asymptotic stability of the BGK model when the initial data is not necessarily close to the global equilibrium pointwisely. Due to the highly nonlinear structure of the relaxation operator, the argument developed to derive the bootstrap estimate for the Boltzmann equation leads to a weaker estimate in the case of the BGK model, which does not exclude the possible blow-up of th…
We propose a BGK model of the quantum Boltzmann equation for gas mixtures. We also provide a sufficient condition that guarantees the existence of equilibrium coefficients so that the model shares the same conservation laws and $H$-theorem with the quantum Boltzmann equation. Unlike the classical BGK for gas mixtures, the equilibrium coefficinets of the local equilibiriums for quantum multi-species gases are defined through highly nonlinear relations that are not explicitly solvable. We verify in a unified way that such nonlinear relations uniquely determine the equilibrium coefficients under …
A semiconductor Boltzmann equation with a non-linear BGK-type collision operator is analyzed for a cloud of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice: \[ \partial_t f + \nabla_pε(p)\cdot\nabla_x f - \nabla_x n_f\cdot\nabla_p f = n_f(1- n_f)(\mathcal{F}_f-f), \quad x\in\mathbb{R}^d, p\in\mathbb{T}^d, t>0. \] This system contains an interaction potential $n_f(x,t):=\int_{\mathbb{T}^d}f(x,p,t)dp$ being significantly more singular than the Coulomb potential, which is used in the Vlasov-Poisson system. This causes major structural difficulties in the analysis. Furthermore, $ε(p) = -\sum_{i=1}^d$ $\cos(…
In this paper the global existence of weak solutions to the relativistic BGK model for the relativistic Boltzmann equation is analyzed. The proof relies on the strong compactness of the density, velocity and temperature under minimal assumptions on the control of some moments of the initial condition together with the initial entropy.
We address the boundary value problem for the ellipsoidal BGK model of the Boltzmann equation posed in a bounded interval. The existence of a unique mild solution is established under the assumption that the inflow boundary data does not concentrate too much around the zero velocity, and the gas is sufficiently rarefied.
Sprays are complex flows constituted of dispersed particles in an underlying gas. In this paper, we are interested in the equations for moderately thick sprays consisting of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and Boltzmann BGK equation. Here the coupling of two equations is through a friction (or drag) force which depends on the density of compressible fluid and the relative velocity between particles and fluid. For the Navier-Stokes-BGK system, we establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions in Sobolev spaces with exponential weight.
In this paper, we consider the existence and asymptotic behavior of the fermionic quantum BGK model, which is a relaxation model of the quantum Boltzmann equation for fermions. More precisely, we establish the existence of unique classical solutions and their exponentially fast stabilization when the initial data starts sufficiently close to a global Fermi-Dirac distribution. A key difficulty unobserved in the study of the classical BGK model is that we must verify that the equilibrium parameters is uniquely determined through a set of nonlinear equations in each iteration step.

In this paper, we establish the entropy-entropy production estimate for the ES-BGK model, a generalized version of the BGK model of the Boltzmann equation introduced for better approximation in the Navier-Stokes limit. Our result improves the previous entropy production estimate [39] in that (1) the full range of Prandtl parameters $-1/2\leqν<1$ including the critical case $ν=-1/2$ is covered, and (2) a sharper entropy production bound is obtained. An explicit characterization of the coefficient of the entropy-entropy production estimate is also presented.
In this article we focus on kinetic equations for gas mixtures since in applications one often has to deal with mixtures instead of a single gas. In particular we consider an approximation of the Boltzmann equation, the Bathnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) equation. This equation is used in many applications because it is very efficient in numerical simulations. In this article, we recall a general BGK equation for gas mixtures which has free parameters. Specific choices of these free parameters lead to special cases in the literature. For this model, we provide an overview concerning modelling, theore…
In this paper, we study the global well-posedness of a coupled system of kinetic and fluid equations. More precisely, we establish the global existence of weak solutions for Navier-Stokes-BGK system consisting of the BGK model of Boltzmann equation and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled through a drag forcing term. This is achieved by combining weak compactness of the particle interaction operator based on Dunford-Pettis theorem, strong compactness of macroscopic fields of the kinetic part relied on velocity averaging lemma and a high order moment estimate, and strong compactness o…
The Fourier-transformed version of the BGK model in one-dimension is solved in order to determine the general solution's asymptotics. The ultimate goal of this paper is to demonstrate that the solution to the model Boltzmann possesses a special property that was conjectured by Truesdell and Muncaster: that solutions decay to a subclass of the solution set uniquely determined by the initial first moment of the gas. First we determine the spectrum and eigendistributions of the associated homogeneous equation. Then, using Case's method of elementary solutions, we find analytic time-dependent solu…

We propose an extension of the Fokker-Planck model of the Boltzmann equation to get a correct Prandtl number in the Compressible Navier-Stokes asymptotics. This is obtained by replacing the diffusion coefficient (which is the equilibrium temperature) by a non diagonal temperature tensor, like the Ellipsoidal-Statistical model (ES) is obtained from the Bathnagar-Gross-Krook model (BGK) of the Boltzmann equation. Our model is proved to satisfy the properties of conservation and a H-theorem. A Chapman-Enskog analysis and two numerical tests show that a correct Prandtl number of 2/3 can be obtaine…
The paper discusses the similarities and the differences in the mathematical theories of the steady Boltzmann and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations posed in a bounded domain. First we discuss two different scaling limits in which solutions of the steady Boltzmann equation have an asymptotic behavior described by the steady Navier-Stokes Fourier system. Whether this system includes the viscous heating term depends on the ratio of the Froude number to the Mach number of the gas flow. While the steady Navier-Stokes equations with smooth divergence-free external force always have at least one…
We describe recent results with A. Pogan developing dynamical systems tools for a class of degenerate evolution equations arising in kinetic theory, including the steady Boltzmann and BGK equations. These yield information on structure of large- and small-amplitude kinetic shocks, the first steps in a larger program toward time-evolutionary stability and asymptotic behavior
