We propose an extension of the Fokker-Planck model of the Boltzmann equation to get a correct Prandtl number in the Compressible Navier-Stokes asymptotics. This is obtained by replacing the diffusion coefficient (which is the equilibrium temperature) by a non diagonal temperature tensor, like the Ellipsoidal-Statistical model (ES) is obtained from the Bathnagar-Gross-Krook model (BGK) of the Boltzmann equation. Our model is proved to satisfy the properties of conservation and a H-theorem. A Chapman-Enskog analysis and two numerical tests show that a correct Prandtl number of 2/3 can be obtained.
The Cauchy problem to the Fokker-Planck-Boltzmann equation under Grad's angular cut-off assumption is investigated. When the initial data is a small perturbation of an equilibrium state, global existence and optimal temporal decay estimates of classical solutions are established. Our analysis is based on the coercivity of the Fokker-Planck operator and an elementary weighted energy method.
In this paper we propose and study a new kinetic rating model for a large number of players, which is motivated by the well-known Elo rating system. Each player is characterised by an intrinsic strength and a rating, which are both updated after each game. We state and analyse the respective Boltzmann type equation and derive the corresponding nonlinear, nonlocal Fokker-Planck equation. We investigate the existence of solutions to the Fokker-Planck equation and discuss their behaviour in the long time limit. Furthermore, we illustrate the dynamics of the Boltzmann and Fokker-Planck equation wi…
Incompressible Navier-Stokes limit of non-bilinear kinetic equations and application to the BGK, nonlinear Fokker-Planck and Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equations
We study the long-time behavior of symmetric solutions of the nonlinear Boltzmann equation and a closely related nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. If the symmetry of the solutions corresponds to shear flows, the existence of stationary solutions can be ruled out because the energy is not conserved. After anisotropic rescaling both equations conserve the energy. We show that the rescaled Boltzmann equation does not admit stationary densities of Maxwellian type (exponentially decaying). For the rescaled Fokker-Planck equation we demonstrate that all solutions converge to a Maxwellian in the long…
We consider various sets of Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations modeling the dynamics of charged particles in a plasma under the effect of a strong magnetic field. For each of them in a regime where the strength of the magnetic field is effectively stronger than that of collisions we first formally derive asymptotically reduced models. In this regime, strong anisotropic phenomena occur; while equilibrium along magnetic field lines is asymptotically reached our asymptotic models capture a non trivial dynamics in the perpendicular directions. We do check that in any case the obtained asymptotic model…
In this paper, we establish the entropy-entropy production estimate for the ES-BGK model, a generalized version of the BGK model of the Boltzmann equation introduced for better approximation in the Navier-Stokes limit. Our result improves the previous entropy production estimate [39] in that (1) the full range of Prandtl parameters $-1/2\leqν<1$ including the critical case $ν=-1/2$ is covered, and (2) a sharper entropy production bound is obtained. An explicit characterization of the coefficient of the entropy-entropy production estimate is also presented.
Starting from the local-in-time classical solution to the compressible Euler system with impermeable boundary condition in half-space, by employing the coupled weak viscous layers (governed by linearized compressible Prandtl equations with Robin boundary condition) and linear kinetic boundary layers, and the analytical tools in \cite{Guo-Jang-Jiang-2010-CPAM} and some new boundary estimates both for Prandtl and Knudsen layers, we proved the local-in-time existence of Hilbert expansion type classical solutions to the scaled Boltzmann equation with Maxwell reflection boundary condition with acco…
It is expected in physics that the homogeneous quantum Boltzmann equation with Fermi-Dirac or Bose-Einstein statistics and with Maxwell-Boltzmann operator (neglecting effect of the statistics) for the weak coupled gases will converge to the homogeneous Fokker-Planck-Landau equation as the Planck constant $\hbar$ tends to zero. In this paper and the upcoming work \cite{HLP2}, we will provide a mathematical justification on this semi-classical limit. Key ingredients into the proofs are the new framework to catch the {\it weak projection gradient}, which is motivated by Villani \cite{V1} to ident…
The ellipsoidal BGK model (ES-BGK) is a generalized version of the BGK model of the Boltzmann equation designed to yield the correct Prandtl number in the Navier-Stokes limit. In this paper, we make two observations on the entropy production functional of the ES-BGK model. First, we show that the Cercignani type estimate holds for the ES-BGK model in the whole range of parameter $-1/2<ν<1$. Secondly, we observe that the ellipsoidal relaxation operator satisfies an unexpected sign-definite property. Some implications of these observations are also discussed.
As for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation of Maxwellian molecules with the fractional Fokker-Planck diffusion term, we consider the Cauchy problem for its Fourier-transformed version, which can be viewed as a kinetic model for the stochastic time-evolution of characteristic functions associated with the symmetric stable Levy process and the Maxwellian collision dynamics. Under a non-cutoff assumption on the kernel, we establish a global existence theorem with maximum growth estimate, uniqueness and stability of solutions.
We revisit the grazing collision limit connecting the Boltzmann equation to the Landau(-Fokker-Planck) equation from their recent reinterpretations as gradient flows. Our results are in the same spirit as the $Γ$-convergence of gradient flows technique introduced by Sandier and Serfaty. In this setting, the grazing collision limit reduces to showing the lower semi-continuous convergence of the Boltzmann entropy-dissipation to the Landau entropy-dissipation.
Shakhov model is a relaxation approximation of the Boltzmann equation proposed to overcome the deficiency of the original BGK model, namely, the incorrect production of the Prandtl number. In this paper, we address the existence and the asymptotic stability of the Shakhov model when the initial data is a small perturbation of global equilibrium. We derive a dichotomy in the coercive estimate of the linearized relaxation operator between zero and non-zero Prandtl number, and observe that the linearized relaxation operator is more degenerate in the former case. To remove such degeneracy and reco…
A kinetic inhomogeneous Boltzmann-type equation is proposed to model the dynamics of the number of agents in a large market depending on the estimated value of an asset and the rationality of the agents. The interaction rules take into account the interplay of the agents with sources of public information, herding phenomena, and irrationality of the individuals. In the formal grazing collision limit, a nonlinear nonlocal Fokker-Planck equation with anisotropic (or incomplete) diffusion is derived. The existence of global-in-time weak solutions to the Fokker-Planck initial-boundary-value proble…
This paper studies convergence to equilibrium for the spatially inhomogeneous linear relaxation Boltzmann equation in Boltzmann entropy and related entropy functionals the $p$-entropies. Villani proved in \cite{V09} entropic hypocoercivity for a class of PDEs in a Hörmander sum of squares form. It was an open question to prove such a result for an operator which does not share this form. We show exponentially fast convergence to equilibrium with explicit rate in entropy for a linear relaxation Boltzmann equation. The key new idea appearing in our proof is the use of a total derivative of the e…
In this work, Holder continuity is obtained for solutions to the nonlocal kinetic Fokker-Planck Equation, and to a family of related equations with general integro-differential operators. These equations can be seen as a generalization of the Fokker-Planck Equation, or as a linearization of non-cutoff Boltzmann. Difficulties arise because our equations are hypoelliptic, so we utilize the theory of averaging lemmas. Regularity is obtained using De Giorgi's method, so it does not depend on the regularity of initial conditions or coefficients. This work assumes stronger constraints on the nonloca…
In this paper we study binary interaction schemes with uncertain parameters for a general class of Boltzmann-type equations with applications in classical gas and aggregation dynamics. We consider deterministic (i.e., a priori averaged) and stochastic kinetic models, corresponding to different ways of understanding the role of uncertainty in the system dynamics, and compare some thermodynamic quantities of interest, such as the mean and the energy, which characterise the asymptotic trends. Furthermore, via suitable scaling techniques we derive the corresponding deterministic and stochastic Fok…
We present an abstract method for deriving decay estimates on the resolvents and semigroups of non-symmetric operators in Banach spaces in terms of estimates in another smaller reference Banach space. This applies to a class of operators writing as a regularizing part, plus a dissipative part. The core of the method is a high-order quantitative factorization argument on the resolvents and semigroups. We then apply this approach to the Fokker-Planck equation, to the kinetic Fokker- Planck equation in the torus, and to the linearized Boltzmann equation in the torus. We finally use this informati…
The ellipsoidal BGK model was introduced in \cite{Ho} to fit the correct Prandtl number in the Navier-Stokes approximation of the classical BGK model. In the paper we establish the global existence of mild solutions to the Cauchy problem on the model for a class of initial data allowed to have large oscillations. The proof is motivated by a recent study of the same topic on the Boltzmann equation in \cite{DHWY}.
The well-known Rutherford differential cross section, denoted by $ dΩ/dσ$, corresponds to a two body interaction with Coulomb potential. It leads to the logarithmically divergence of the momentum transfer (or the transport cross section) which is described by $$\int_{{\mathbb S}^2} (1-\cosθ) \frac{dΩ}{dσ} dσ\sim \int_0^π θ^{-1}dθ. $$ Here $θ$ is the deviation angle in the scattering event. Due to screening effect, physically one can assume that $θ_{\min}$ is the order of magnitude of the smallest angles for which the scattering can still be regarded as Coulomb scattering. Under ad hoc cutoff $…
