The relativistic quantum Boltzmann equation (or the relativistic Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation) describes the dynamics of single-species fast-moving quantum particles. With the recent development of the relativistic quantum mechanics, the relativistic quantum Boltzmann equation has been widely used in physics and engineering such as in the quantum collision experiments and the simulations of electrons in graphene. In spite of such importance, there has been no mathematical theory on the existence of solutions for the relativistic quantum Boltzmann equation to the best of authors' knowledge. In this paper, we prove the global existence of a unique classical solution to the relativistic Boltzmann equation for both bosons and fermions when the initial distribution is nearby a global equilibrium.
The spectrum structure of the linearized relativistic Boltzmann equation around a global Maxwellian is studied in this paper. Based on the spectrum analysis, we establish the optimal time-convergence rates of the global solution to the Cauchy problem for the relativistic Boltzmann equation.
Anderson-Witting model is a relaxational model equation of the relativistic Boltzmann equation, which sees a wide application in physics. In this paper, we study the existence of classical solutions and its asymptotic behavior when the solution starts sufficiently close to a global relativistic Maxwellian.
We study the Cauchy problem for the relativistic Boltzmann equation near relativistic Maxwellians in the whole space. The purpose of this article is to handle hard potentials, and for initial data with finite $L^\infty$ norm, to construct global in time mild solutions. We also prove the optimal time decay rates of the solutions.
For the relativistic Boltzmann equation in $\R^3_x$, this work proves the global existence, uniqueness, positivity, and optimal time convergence rates to the relativistic Maxwellian for solutions which start out sufficiently close under the general physical soft potential assumption proposed in 1988 by Dudy{ń}ski and Ekiel-Je{ż}ewska.
In this paper, we prove the global existence and uniqueness of mild solution to the relativistic Boltzmann equation both in the whole space and in torus for a class of initial data with bounded velocity-weighted $L^\infty$-norm and some smallness on $L^1_xL^\infty_p$-norm as well as on defect mass, energy and entropy. Moreover, the asymptotic stability of the solutions is also investigated in the case of torus.
We consider an inverse problem for the nonlinear Boltzmann equation near the equilibrium. Our goal is to determine the collision kernel in the Boltzmann equation from the knowledge of the Albedo operator. Our approach relies on a linearization technique as well as the injectivity of the Gauss-Weierstrass transform.
We prove the unique existence and exponential decay of global in time classical solutions to the special relativistic Boltzmann equation without any angular cut-off assumptions with initial perturbations in some weighted Sobolev spaces. We consider perturbations of the relativistic Maxwellian equilibrium states. We work in the case of a spatially periodic box. We consider the general conditions on the collision kernel from Dudyński and Ekiel-Jeźewska (Commun Math Phys \textbf{115}(4):607--629, 1985). Additionally, we prove sharp constructive upper and coercive lower bounds for the linearized r…
In this paper, we prove the propagation of $L^p$ upper bounds for the spatially homogeneous relativistic Boltzmann equation for any $1<p<\infty$. We consider the case of relativistic \textit{hard ball} with Grad's angular cutoff. Our proof is based on a detailed study of the interrelationship between the relative momenta, the regularity and the $L^p$ estimates for the gain operator, the development of the relativistic Carleman representation, and several estimates on the relativistic hypersurface $E^{v_*}_{v'-v}$. We also derive a Pythagorean theorem for the \textit{relative momenta} $g(v,v_*)…

This paper is concerned with the relativistic Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. The non-cutoff theory for the relativistic Boltzmann equation has been rarely studied even under a smallness assumption on the initial data due to the lack of understanding of the spectrum and the need for coercivity estimates on the linearized collision operator. Namely, it is crucial to obtain the sharp asymptotics for the frequency multiplier to obtain this coercivity that has never been established before. In this paper, we prove the sharp asymptotics for the frequency multiplier for a general relativi…
Consider the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system describing the dynamics of an electron gas in the presence of a fixed ion background. Thanks to recent works \cite{Germain-Masmoudi-ASENS-2014, Guo-Ionescu-Pausader-JMP-2014} and \cite{Deng-Ionescu-Pausader-ARMA-2017}, we establish the global-in-time validity of its Hilbert expansion and derive the limiting relativistic Euler-Maxwell system as the mean free path goes to zero. Our method is based on the $L^2-L^{\infty}$ framework and the Glassey-Strauss Representation of the electromagnetic field, with auxiliary $H^1$ estimate and $W^{1,…
We consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres (with constant restitution coefficient $α\in (0,1)$) under the thermalization induced by a host medium with a fixed Maxwellian distribution. We prove that the solution to the associated initial-value problem converges exponentially fast towards the unique equilibrium solution. The proof combines a careful spectral analysis of the linearised semigroup as well as entropy estimates. The trend towards equilibrium holds in the weakly inelastic regime in which $α$ is close to $1$, and the rate of convergence is expli…
This paper is concerned with the relativistic Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. We establish the global-in-time existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic stability for solutions nearby the relativistic Maxwellian. We work in the case of a spatially periodic box. We assume the generic hard-interaction and soft-interaction conditions on the collision kernel that were derived by Dudyński and Ekiel-Je$\dot{\text{z}}$ewska (Comm. Math. Phys. \textbf{115}(4):607--629, 1985), and our assumptions include the case of Israel particles (J. Math. Phys. \textbf{4}:1163--1181, 1963). In this physical s…
In this paper we prove the strong and time-averaged strong convergence to equilibrium for solutions (with general initial data) of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for Fermi-Dirac particles. The assumption on the collision kernel includes the Coulomb potential with a weaker angular cutoff. The proof is based on moment estimates, entropy dissipation inequalities, regularity of the collision gain operator, and a new observation that many collision kernels are larger than or equal to some completely positive kernels, which enables us to avoid dealing with the convergence problem of th…
The paper considers the convergence to equilibrium for measure solutions of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for hard potentials with angular cutoff. We prove the exponential sharp rate of strong convergence to equilibrium for conservative measure solutions having finite mass and energy. The proof is based on the regularizing property of the iterated collision operators, exponential moment production estimates, and some previous results on the exponential rate of strong convergence to equilibrium for square integrable initial data. We also obtain a lower bound of the convergence ra…
A Boltzmann equation, used to describe the evolution of the density function of a gas of photons interacting by Compton scattering with electrons at low density and non relativistic equilibrium, is considered. A truncation of the very singular redistribution function is introduced and justified. The existence of weak solutions is proved for a large set of initial data. A simplified equation, where only the quadratic terms are kept and that appears at very low temperature of the electron gas, for small values of the photon's energies, is also studied. The existence of weak solutions, and also o…
In this work we present several quantitative results of convergence to equilibrium for the linear Boltzmann operator with soft potentials under Grad's angular cutoff assumption. This is done by an adaptation of the famous entropy method and its variants, resulting in explicit algebraic, or even stretched exponential, rates of convergence to equilibrium under appropriate assumptions. The novelty in our approach is that it involves functional inequalities relating the entropy to its production rate, which have independent applications to equations with mixed linear and non-linear terms. We also …
This article considers a long-outstanding open question regarding the Jacobian determinant for the relativistic Boltzmann equation in the center-of-momentum coordinates. For the Newtonian Boltzmann equation, the center-of-momentum coordinates have played a large role in the study of the Newtonian non-cutoff Boltzmann equation, in particular, we mention the widely used cancellation lemma by Alexandre et al. (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 152(4):327-355, 2000). In this article we calculate specifically the very complicated Jacobian determinant, in ten variables, for the relativistic collision map fr…
We study the local-in-time hydrodynamic limit of the relativistic Boltzmann equation using a Hilbert expansion. More specifically, we prove the existence of local solutions to the relativistic Boltzmann equation that are nearby the local relativistic Maxwellian constructed from a class of solutions to the relativistic Euler equations that includes a large subclass of near-constant, non-vacuum fluid states. In particular, for small Knudsen number, these solutions to the relativistic Boltzmann equation have dynamics that are effectively captured by corresponding solutions to the relativistic Eul…
This paper deals with the long time behavior of solutions to the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation. The interactions considered are the so-called (non cut-off and non mollified) hard potentials. We prove an exponential in time convergence towards the equilibrium, improving results of Villani from \cite{Vill1} where a polynomial decay to equilibrium is proven. The basis of the proof is the study of the linearized equation for which we prove a new spectral gap estimate in a $L^1$ space with a polynomial weight by taking advantage of the theory of enlargement of the functional space for th…
In this paper, we study spatially homogeneous solutions of the Boltzmann equation in special relativity and in Robertson-Walker spacetimes. We obtain an analogue of the Povzner inequality in the relativistic case and use it to prove global existence theorems. We show that global solutions exist for a certain class of collision cross sections of the hard potential type in Minkowski space and in spatially flat Robertson-Walker spacetimes.

We investigate the large time behavior of solutions to the spatially homogeneous linear Boltzmann equation from a semigroup viewpoint. Our analysis is performed in some (weighted) $L^{1}$-spaces. We deal with both the cases of hard and soft potentials (with angular cut-off). For hard potentials, we provide a new proof of the fact that, in weighted $L^{1}$-spaces with exponential or algebraic weights, the solutions converge exponentially fast towards equilibrium. Our approach uses weak-compactness arguments combined with recent results of the second author on positive semigroups in $L^{1}$-spac…
We study the Cauchy Problem for the relativistic Boltzmann equation with near Vacuum initial data. Unique global in time "mild" solutions are obtained uniformly in the speed of light parameter $c \ge 1$. We furthermore prove that solutions to the relativistic Boltzmann equation converge to solutions of the Newtonian Boltzmann equation in the limit as $c\to\infty$ on arbitrary time intervals $[0,T]$, with convergence rate $1/c^{2-ε}$ for any $ε\in(0,2)$. This may be the first proof of unique global in time validity of the Newtonian limit for a Kinetic equation.
In this paper, we prove the propagation of uniform upper bounds for the spatially homogeneous relativistic Boltzmann equation. These $L^\infty$ bounds have been known to be a challenging open problem in relativistic kinetic theory. To accomplish this, we establish two types of estimates for the gain part of the collision operator: first, we prove a potential type estimate and a relativistic hyper-surface integral estimate. We then combine those estimates using the relativistic counter-part of the Carleman representation to derive uniform control of the gain term for the relativistic collision …
In the study of solutions to the relativistic Boltzmann equation, their regularity with respect to the momentum variables has been an outstanding question, even local in time, due to the initially unexpected growth in the post-collisional momentum variables which was discovered in 1991 by Glassey & Strauss \cite{MR1105532}. We establish momentum regularity within energy spaces via a new splitting technique and interplay between the Glassey-Strauss frame and the center of mass frame of the relativistic collision operator. In a periodic box, these new momentum regularity estimates lead to a proo…
In this paper it is shown that unique solutions to the relativistic Boltzmann equation exist for all time and decay with any polynomial rate towards their steady state relativistic Maxwellian provided that the initial data starts out sufficiently close in $L^\infty_\ell$. If the initial data are continuous then so is the corresponding solution. We work in the case of a spatially periodic box. Conditions on the collision kernel are generic in the sense of (Dudy{ń}ski and Ekiel-Je{ż}ewska, Comm. Math. Phys., 1988); this resolves the open question of global existence for the soft potentials.
It is often the case in mathematical analysis that solving an open problem can be facilitated by finding a new set of coordinates which may illumniate the known difficulties. In this article, we illustrate how to derive an assortment coordinates in which to represent the relativistic Boltzmann collision operator. We show the equivalence between some known representations, and others which seem to be new. One of these representations has been used recently to solve several open problems.
For the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with hard po- tentials and Grad's cutoff (e.g. hard spheres), we give quantitative estimates of exponential convergence to equilibrium, and we show that the rate of exponential decay is governed by the spectral gap for the linearized equation, on which we provide a lower bound. Our approach is based on establishing spectral gap-like estimates valid near the equilibrium, and then connecting the latter to the quantitative nonlinear theory. This leads us to an explicit study of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator in functional spaces larger…
We show the existence of smooth stationary solutions for the inelastic Boltzmann equation under the thermalization induced by a host-medium with a fixed distribution. This is achieved by controlling the Lp-norms, the moments and the regularity of the solutions for the Cauchy problem together with arguments related to a dynamical proof for the existence of stationary states.
We study a hard sphere gas at equilibrium, and prove that in the low density limit, the fluctuations converge to a Gaussian process governed by the fluctuating Boltzmann equation. This result holds for arbitrarily long times. The method of proof builds upon the weak convergence method introduced in the companion paper [8] which is improved by considering clusters of pseudo-trajectories as in [7].
We consider the Boltzmann operator for mixtures with cutoff Maxwellian, hard potentials, or hard spheres collision kernels. In a perturbative regime around the global Maxwellian equilibrium, the linearized Boltzmann multi-species operator $\mathbf{L}$ is known to possess an explicit spectral gap $λ_{\mathbf{L}}$, in the global equilibrium weighted $L^2$ space. We study a new operator $\mathbf{L^\varepsilon}$ obtained by linearizing the Boltzmann operator for mixtures around local Maxwellian distributions, where all the species evolve with different small macroscopic velocities of order $\varep…
We consider an approximation of the linearised equation of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation that describes the distribution of quasiparticles in a dilute gas of bosons at low temperature. The corresponding collision frequency is neither bounded from below nor from above. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions satisfying the conservation of energy. We show that these solutions converge to the corresponding stationary state, at an algebraic rate as time tends to infinity.
We prove the stability of global equilibrium in a multi-species mixture, where the different species can have different masses, on the $3$-dimensional torus. We establish stability estimates in $L^\infty_{x,v}(w)$ where $w=w(v)$ is either polynomial or exponential, with explicit threshold. Along the way we extend recent estimates and stability results for the mono-species Boltzmann operator not only to the multi-species case but also to more general hard potential and Maxwellian kernels.
When the temperature of a trapped Bose gas is below the Bose-Einstein transition temperature and above absolute zero, the gas is composed of two distinct components: the Bose-Einstein condensate and the cloud of thermal excitations. The dynamics of the excitations can be described by quantum Boltzmann models. We establish a connection between quantum Boltzmann models and chemical reaction networks. We prove that the discrete differential equations for these quantum Boltzmann models converge to an equilibrium point. Moreover, this point is unique for all initial conditions that satisfy the same…
In rotationally symmetric domains, the Boltzmann equation with specular reflection boundary condition has a special type of equilibrium states called the rotational local Maxwellian which, unlike the uniform Maxwellian, has an additional term related to the angular momentum of the gas. In this paper, we consider the initial boundary value problem of the Boltzmann equation near the rotational local Maxwellian. Based on the L2-L1 framework of [12], we establish the global well-posedness and the convergence toward such equilibrium states.
