In a neighborhood of a hyperbolic periodic orbit of a volume-preserving flow on a manifold of dimension 3, we define and show the existence of a normal form for the generator of the flow that encodes the dynamics. If the flow is a contact flow, we show the existence of a normal form for the contact form what results in an improved normal form for its Reeb vector field. Additionally, we present a few rigidity results associated to periodic data for Anosov contact flows derived from the underlying normal form theory. Finally, we establish a new local rigidity result for contact flows on manifolds of dimension 3 in a neighborhood of a hyperbolic periodic point by finding a new link between the roof function and the return map to a section.
A generic geodesic on a finite area, hyperbolic 2-orbifold exhibits an infinite sequence of penetrations into a neighborhood of a cone singularity, so that the sequence of depths of maximal penetration has a limiting distribution. The distribution function is the same for all such surfaces and is described by a fairly simple formula.
We consider a $C^1$ neighborhood of the time-one map of a hyperbolic flow and prove that the topological entropy varies continuously for diffeomorphisms in this neighborhood. This shows that the topological entropy varies continuously for all known examples of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center bundle.
We consider Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of the Euclidean space, generated by compactly supported time-dependent perturbations of hyperbolic quadratic forms. We prove that, under some natural assumptions, such a diffeomorphism must have simple periodic orbits of arbitrarily large period when it has fixed points which are not necessary from a homological perspective.
We consider a dynamical system which has the hyperbolic structure along an attracting invariant manifold $M$. The problem is whether every motion starting in a neighborhood of $M$ possesses an asymptotic phase, i.e. eventually approaches a particular motion on $M$. Earlier, positive solutions to the problem were obtained under the condition that the decay rate of solutions toward the manifold exceeds the decay rate of the solutions within the manifold. We show that in our case the above condition is not necessary. To prove that a neighborhood of $M$ is filled with motions for each of which the…
We prove that for a certain class of closed monotone symplectic manifolds any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with a hyperbolic fixed point must necessarily have infinitely many periodic orbits. Among the manifolds in this class are complex projective spaces, some Grassmannians, and also certain product manifolds such as the product of a projective space with a symplectically aspherical manifold of low dimension. A key to the proof of this theorem is the fact that the energy required for a Floer connecting trajectory to approach an iterated hyperbolic orbit and cross its fixed neighborhood is bound…
In this paper we establish a closing property and a hyperbolic closing property for thin trapped chain hyperbolic homoclinic classes with one dimensional center in partial hyperbolicity setting. Taking advantage of theses properties, we prove that the growth rate of the number of hyperbolic periodic points is equal to the topological entropy. We also obtain that the hyperbolic periodic measures are dense in the space of invariant measures.
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a geometrically finite hyperbolic manifold. We present a very general theorem on the shrinking target problem for the geodesic flow, using its exponential mixing. This includes a strengthening of Sullivan's logarithm law for the excursion rate of the geodesic flow. More generally, we prove logarithm laws for the first hitting time for shrinking cusp neighborhoods, shrinking tubular neighborhoods of a closed geodesic, and shrinking metric balls, as well as give quantitative estimates for the time a generic geodesic spends in such shrinking targets.
We prove the existence of infinitely many periodic points of symplectomorphisms isotopic to the identity if they admit at least one (non-contractible) hyperbolic periodic orbit and satisfy some condition on its flux. The obtained periodic points correspond to periodic orbits whose free homotopy classes are formed by iterations of the hyperbolic periodic orbit. Our result is proved for a certain class of closed symplectic manifolds and the main tool we use is a variation of Floer theory for non-contractible periodic orbits and symplectomorphisms, the Floer-Novikov theory. For a certain class of…
We prove that, under a mild condition on the hyperbolicity of its periodic points, a map $g$ which is topologically conjugated to a hyperbolic map (respectively, an expanding map) is also a hyperbolic map (respectively, an expanding map). In particular, this result gives a partial positive answer for a question done by A. Katok, in a related context.
We prove results related to robust transitivity and density of periodic points of Partially Hyperbolic Diffeomorphisms under conditions involving Accessibility and a property in the tangent bundle .
The aim of this paper is to prove the existence of periodic solutions to symmetric Newtonian systems in any neighborhood of an isolated orbit of equilibria. Applying equivariant bifurcation techniques we obtain a generalization of the classical Lyapunov center theorem to the case of symmetric potentials with orbits of non-isolated critical points. Our tool is an equivariant version of the Conley index. To compare the indices we compute cohomological dimensions of some orbit spaces.
Bautista and Morales proved the existence of periodic orbits in singular-hyperbolic attracting sets(*). In this paper, we extend their result to singular-hyperbolic Lyapunov stable sets. ((*)"Existence of periodic orbits for singular-hyperbolic sets", Moscow Mathematical Journal, 6 (2006), 265-297)
We shall deal with the periodic problem for nonlinear perturbations of abstract hyperbolic evolution equations generating an evolution system of contractions. We prove an averaging principle for the translation along trajectories operator associated to the nonlinear evolution system, expressed in terms of the topological degree. The abstract results shall be applied to the damped hyperbolic partial differential equation.
We consider a counting problem in the setting of hyperbolic dynamics. Let $ϕ_t : Λ\to Λ$ be a weak mixing hyperbolic flow. We count the proportion of prime periodic orbits of $ϕ_t$, with length less than $T$, that satisfy an averaging condition related to a Hölder continuous function $f: Λ\to \mathbb{R}$. We show, assuming an approximability condition on $ϕ$, that as $T \to \infty$, we obtain a central limit theorem.
We introduce the concept of 2-cyclicity for families of one-dimensional maps with a non-hyperbolic fixed point by analogy to the cyclicity for families of planar vector fields with a weak focus. This new concept is useful in order to study the number of 2-periodic orbits that can bifurcate from the fixed point. As an application we study the 2-cyclicity of some natural families of polynomial maps.
We prove dynamical Borel Canteli Lemmas for discrete time homogenous flows hitting a sequence of shrinking targets in a hyperbolic manifold. These results apply to both diagonalizable and unipotent flows, and any family of measurable shrinking targets. As a special case, we establish logarithm laws for the first hitting times to shrinking balls and shrinking cusp neighborhoods, refining and improving on perviously known results.
We prove that if the multipliers of the repelling periodic orbits of a complex polynomial grow at least like $n^{5 + ε}$, for some $ε> 0$, then the Julia set of the polynomial is locally connected when it is connected. As a consequence for a polynomial the presence of a Cremer cycle implies the presence of a sequence of repelling periodic orbits with "small" multipliers. Somehow surprinsingly the proof is based in measure theorical considerations.
We prove exponential convergence to time-periodic states of the solutions of time-periodic Hamilton-Jacobi equations on the torus, assuming that the Aubry set is the union of a finite number of hyperbolic periodic orbits of the the Euler Lagrange flow. The period of limiting solutions is the least common multiple of the periods of the orbits in the Aubry set. This extends a result that we obtained in the autonomous case.

In this paper we consider a non-atomic invariant hyperbolic measure $μ$ of a $C^1$ diffeomorphsim on a compact manifold, in whose Oseledec splitting the stable bundle dominates the unstable bundle on $μ$ a.e. points. We show an \textit{exponentially} shadowing and an \textit{exponentially} closing lemma, and as applications we show two classical results. One is that there exists a hyperbolic periodic point such that the closure of its unstable manifold has \textit{positive} measure and it has a homoclinic point from which one can deduce a horseshoe. Moreover, such hyperbolic periodic points ar…
We consider semigroup actions on the unit interval generated by strictly increasing $C^r$-maps. We assume that one of the generators has a pair of fixed points, one attracting and one repelling, and a heteroclinic orbit that connects the repeller and attractor, and the other generators form a robust blender, which can bring the points from a small neighborhood of the attractor to an arbitrarily small neighborhood of the repeller. This is a model setting for partially hyperbolic systems with one central direction. We show that, under additional conditions on the non-linearity and the Schwarzian…
The study of polygonal billiards, particularly those in the regular pentagon, has been the subject of two recent papers. One of these papers approaches the problem of discovering the periodic trajectories on the pentagon by identifying slopes of periodic directions with points in the Poincaré disk generated by hyperbolic isometric transformations. The other approach, coming from the other paper, transforms the double pentagon into a rectilinear translation surface called the 'golden L', where periodic directions are generated by a set of matrices associated with this surface in a special way. …
In this paper, we show that, for scalar reaction-diffusion equations on the circle S1, the property of hyperbolicity of all equilibria and periodic orbits is generic with respect to the non-linearity . In other words, we prove that in an appropriate functional space of nonlinear terms in the equation, the set of functions, for which all equilibria and periodic orbits are hyperbolic, is a countable intersection of open dense sets. The main tools in the proof are the property of the lap number and the Sard-Smale theorem.
We prove that, for $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms, if the periodic orbits contained in a homoclinic class $H(p)$ have all their Lyapunov exponents bounded away from 0, then $H(p)$ must be (uniformly) hyperbolic. This is in sprit of the works of the stability conjecture, but with a significant difference that the homoclinic class $H(p)$ is not known isolated in advance, hence the "weak" periodic orbits created by perturbations near the homoclinic class have to be guaranteed strictly inside the homoclinic class. In this sense the problem is of an "intrinsic" nature, and the classical proof of the…
We prove that there exist Beltrami fields in Euclidean space, with sharp decay at infinity, which have a prescribed set of invariant tori (possibly knotted or linked) that enclose an arbitrarily large number of hyperbolic periodic orbits. These hyperbolic orbits are cablings over the core curve of each torus. Moreover, the domain bounded by each invariant torus is covered by an almost full measure set of invariant tori. We show that an analogous result holds for high-frequency Beltrami fields on the flat 3-torus.
We construct an explicit example of family of non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, at the boundary of the set of uniformly hyperbolic systems, with one orbit of cubic heteroclinic tangency. One of the leaves involved in this heteroclinic tangency is periodic, and there is a certain degree of freedom for the choice of the second one. For a non-countable set of choices, this leaf is not periodic and the diffeomorphism is Kupka-Smale: every periodic point is hyperbolic and the intersections of stable and unstable leaves of periodic points are transverse. As a consequence of our construction,…
We show that in the absence of periodic centre annuli, a partially hyperbolic surface endomorphism is dynamically coherent and leaf conjugate to its linearisation. We proceed to characterise the dynamics in the presence of periodic centre annuli. This completes a classification of partially hyperbolic surface endomorphisms.
In this paper we revisit uniformly hyperbolic basic sets and the domination of Oseledets splittings at periodic points. We prove that periodic points with simple Lyapunov spectrum are dense in non-trivial basic pieces of Cr-residual diffeomorphisms on three-dimensional manifolds (r >= 1). In the case of the C1-topology we can prove that either all periodic points of a hyperbolic basic piece for a diffeomorphism f have simple spectrum C1- robustly (in which case f has a finest dominated splitting into one-dimensional sub-bundles and all Lyapunov exponent functions of f are continuous in the wea…
We study the continuation of periodic orbits from various compound of homoclinics in classical system. Together with the homoclinics, the periodic orbits make up a $C^1$-smooth, normally hyperbolic invariant cylinder with holes. It plays a key role to cross multiple resonant point.
We consider $C^2$ vector fields in the three dimensional sphere with an attracting heteroclinic cycle between two periodic hyperbolic solutions with real Floquet multipliers. The proper basin of this attracting set exhibits historic behavior and from the asymptotic properties of its orbits we obtain a complete set of invariants under topological conjugacy in a neighborhood of the cycle. As expected, this set contains the periods of the orbits involved in the cycle, a combination of their angular speeds, the rates of expansion and contraction in linearizing neighborhoods of them, besides inform…
We prove that every sectional Anosov flow (or, equivalently, every sectional-hyperbolic attracting set of a flow) on a compact manifold has a periodic orbit. This extends the previous three-dimensional result obtained in [Existence of periodic orbits for singular-hyperbolic sets].
In this paper we consider families of holomorphic maps defined on subsets of the complex plane, and show that the technique developed in \cite{LSvS1} to treat unfolding of critical relations can also be used to deal with cases where the critical orbit converges to a hyperbolic attracting or a parabolic periodic orbit. As before this result applies to rather general families of maps, such as polynomial-like mappings, provided some lifting property holds. Our Main Theorem states that either the multiplier of a hyperbolic attracting periodic orbit depends univalently on the parameter and bifurcat…
We consider the dynamics of `nonlinear tent maps': piecewise smooth unimodal maps with nowhere vanishing derivative. We show that if a nonlinear tent map $f$ is not infinitely renormalizable, then all its periodic orbits of sufficiently high period are hyperbolic repelling. If additionally all periodic orbits of $f$ are hyperbolic, then $f$ has at most finitely many periodic attractors and there is a hyperbolic expansion outside the basins of these periodic attractors. In particular, if a nonlinear tent map $f$ is not infinitely renormalizable and all its periodic orbits are hyperbolic repelli…
We prove that a "positive probability" subset of the boundary of the set of hyperbolic (Axiom A) surface diffeomorphisms with no cycles $\mathcal{H}$ is constituted by Kupka-Smale diffeomorphisms: all periodic points are hyperbolic and their invariant manifolds intersect transversally. Lack of hyperbolicity arises from the presence of a tangency between a stable manifold and an unstable manifold, one of which is not associated to a periodic point. All these diffeomorphisms that we construct lie on the boundary of the same connected component of $\mathcal{H}$.
Let $f:M\to M$ be a $C^{1+ε}$-map on a smooth Riemannian manifold $M$ and let $Λ\subset M$ be a compact $f$-invariant locally maximal set. In this paper we obtain several results concerning the distribution of the periodic orbits of $f|Λ$. These results are non-invertible and, in particular, non-uniformly hyperbolic versions of well-known results by Bowen, Ruelle, and others in the case of hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. We show that the topological pressure $P_{\rm top}(φ)$ can be computed by the values of the potential $φ$ on the expanding periodic orbits and also that every hyperbolic ergodic i…

By Dulac maps we mean first return maps of hyperbolic polycycles of analytic planar vector fields. We study the fractal properties of the orbits of a parabolic Dulac map. To this end, we prove that it admits a Fatou coordinate with an asympotic expansion in terms of power-iterated logarithm transseries. This allows to introduce a new notion, the \emph{continuous time length of $\varepsilon$-neighborhoods of orbits}, and to prove that this function of $\varepsilon$ admits an asymptotic expansion in the same scale. We show that, under some hypotheses, this expansion determines the class of forma…
The grazing bifurcation is considered for the Newtonian model of vibro-impact systems. A brief review on the conditions, sufficient for existence of a grazing family of periodic solutions, is given. The properties of these periodic solutions are discussed. A plenty of results on the topological structure of attractors of vibro-impact systems is known. However, since the considered system is strongly nonlinear, these attractors may be invisible or, at least, very sensitive to changes of parameters of the system. On the other hand, they are observed in experiments and numerical simulations. We o…
A diffeomorphism f is called super exponential divergent if for every r>1, the lower limit of #Per_n(f)/r^n diverges to infinity as n tends to infinity, where Per_n(f) is the set of all periodic points of f with period n. This property is stronger than the usual super exponential growth of the number of periodic points. We show that for a three dimensional manifold M, there exists an open subset O of Diff^1(M) such that diffeomorphisms with super exponential divergent property form a dense subset of O in the C^1-topology. A relevant result of non super exponential divergence for diffeomorphism…
The periodic solutions of a type of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations with a localized nonlinearity are investigated. For instance, these equations are known to describe several acoustical systems with fluid-structure interaction. It also encompasses particular types of delay differential equations. These systems undergo a bifurcation with the appearance of a small amplitude periodic regime. Assuming a certain regularity of the oscillating solution, several of its properties around the bifurcation are given: bifurcation point, dependence of both the amplitude and period with …
A recent problem in dynamics is to determinate whether an attractor $Λ$ of a $C^r$ flow $X$ is $C^r$ robust transitive or not. By {\em attractor} we mean a transitive set to which all positive orbits close to it converge. An attractor is $C^r$ robust transitive (or {\em $C^r$ robust} for short) if it exhibits a neighborhood $U$ such that the set $\cap_{t>0}Y_t(U)$ is transitive for every flow $Y$ $C^r$ close to $X$. We give sufficient conditions for robustness of attractors based on the following definitions. An attractor is {\em singular-hyperbolic} if it has singularities (all hyperbolic) an…
We consider linear cocycles over non-uniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems. The base system is a diffeomorphism $f$ of a compact manifold $X$ preserving a hyperbolic ergodic probability measure $μ$. The cocycle $A$ over $f$ is Holder continuous and takes values in $GL(d,R)$ or, more generally, in the group of invertible bounded linear operators on a Banach space. For a $GL(d,R)$-valued cocycle $A$ we prove that the Lyapunov exponents of $A$ with respect to $μ$ can be approximated by the Lyapunov exponents of $A$ with respect to measures on hyperbolic periodic orbits of $f$. In the infinite-di…
We consider group-valued cocycles over dynamical systems with hyperbolic behavior. The base system is either a hyperbolic diffeomorphism or a mixing subshift of finite type. The cocycle $A$ takes values in the group of invertible bounded linear operators on a Banach space and is Hölder continuous. We consider the periodic data of $A$, i.e. the set of its return values along the periodic orbits in the base. We show that if the periodic data of $A$ is uniformly quasiconformal or bounded or contained in a compact set, then so is the cocycle. Moreover, in the latter case the cocycle is isometric w…
Time-periodic perturbations of an asymmetric Duffing-Van-der-Pol equation close to an integrable equation with a homoclinic "figure-eight" of a saddle are considered. The behavior of solutions outside the neighborhood of "figure-eight" is studied analytically. The problem of limit cycles for an autonomous equation is solved and resonance zones for a nonautonomous equation are analyzed. The behavior of the separatrices of a fixed saddle point of the Poincare map in the small neighborhood of the unperturbed "figure-eight" is ascertained. The results obtained are illustrated by numerical computat…
