Modular units are functions on modular curves whose divisors are supported on the cusps. They form a free abelian group of rank at most one less than the number of cusps. In this paper we study the group of modular units on $X_{1}( p )$, with prime level $p \ge 5$. We give an explicit basis for this group and study certain rational subgroups of it. We use the basis to numerically investigate the structure of the cuspidal group of $X_{1}( p)$ and its rational subgroup. In the later stages of this paper we use our basis to determine a specific large quotient of the cuspidal group.
In this paper, we present the outcome of vast computer calculations, locating several of the very rare instances of level one cuspidal Bianchi modular forms that are not lifts of elliptic modular forms.
Let $ \mathfrak{C}^+_{ns}(p) $ be the Cuspidal Divisor Class Group of the modular curves $X^+_{ns}(p) $ associated to the normalizer of a non-split Cartan subgroup of level $ p$. I study the $ p-$primary part of $ \mathfrak{C}^+_{ns}(p) $ and estimate the order of growth of $ |\mathfrak{C}^+_{ns}(p)| $.
In this paper, we study the torsion subgroup of $J_0(N)$ over the field generated by those points in the cuspidal group, where $N$ is an odd positive integer. We prove that, considered as Hecke modules, this group and the cuspidal subgroup are both supported at the maximal Eisenstein ideals.
In this paper, we extend previous results to prove that generalized modular forms with rational Fourier expansions whose divisors are supported only at the cusps and certain other points in the upper half plane are actually classical modular forms. We discuss possible limitations to this extension and pose questions about possible zeroes for modular forms of prime level.
In this paper, we consider automorphic forms on $\mathrm{Sp}_4(\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{Q})$ which generate large discrete series representations of $\mathrm{Sp}_4(\mathbb{R})$ as $(\mathfrak{sp}_4(\mathbb{R}),K_\infty)$-modules. We determine the cuspidal components and the structure of the space of such automorphic forms.
We show that the Drinfeld modular forms with $A$-expansion that have been constructed by the author are precisely the hyperderivatives of the subfamily of single-cuspidal Drinfeld modular forms with $A$-expansions that remain modular after hyperdifferentiation. In addition, we show that Drinfeld-Poincaré series display a similar behavior with respect to hyperdifferentiation, giving indirect evidence that the Drinfeld modular forms with $A$-expansions are Drinfeld-Poincaré series. The Drinfeld-Poincaré series that we consider generalize previous examples of such series by Gekeler, and Gerritzen…
Generalising the recent method of Andreatta, Iovita, and Pilloni for cuspidal forms, we construct an eigenvariety for symplectic and unitary groups that parametrises systems of eigenvalues of overconvergent and locally analytic $p$-adic automorphic forms. This is achieved by gluing some intermediates eigenvarieties of a fixed 'degree of cuspidality'. The dimension of these eigenvarieties is explicit and depends on the degree of cuspidality, it is maximal for cuspidal forms and it is $1$ for forms that are 'not cuspidal at all'. Under mild assumption, we are able to prove a conjecture of Urban …
Based on the notion of strong modular form developed in Part I, we propose to structure the family of cuspidal modular form spaces $(S_{2k}(Γ_0(N)))_{k\in \mathbb{N}^*}$ and to determine bases for each of these spaces, once known bases for the first values of $k$. We then apply these theoretical results to explicitly determine bases for space families $(S_{2k}(Γ_0(N)))_{k\in \mathbb{N}^*}$ when $1\leq N \leq 10$.
I find an explicit description of modular units in terms of Siegel functions for the modular curves $X^+_{ns}(p^k)$ associated to the normalizer of a non-split Cartan subgroup of level $p^k$ where $p\not=2,3$ is a prime. The Cuspidal Divisor Class Group $\mathfrak{C}^+_{ns}(p^k)$ on $X^+_{ns}(p^k)$ is explicitly described as a module over the group ring $R = \mathbb{Z}[(\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z})^*/\{\pm 1\}]$. In this paper I give a formula involving generalized Bernoulli numbers $B_{2,χ}$ for $|\mathfrak{C}^+_{ns}(p^k)|$.
We define and study the space of mixed modular symbols for a given finite index subgroup $Γ$ of $SL_2(\mathbf{Z})$. This is an extension of the usual space of modular symbols, which in some cases carries more information about Eisenstein series. We make use of mixed modular symbols to construct some $1$-motives related to the generalized Jacobian of modular curves. In the case $Γ= Γ_0(p)$ for some prime $p$, we relate our construction to the work of Ehud de Shalit on $p$-adic periods of $X_0(p)$.
We extend the usual notion of Petersson inner product on the space of cuspidal Jacobi forms to include non-cuspidal forms as well. This is done by examining carefully the relation between certain "growth-killing" invariant differential operators on $\mathbf H_2$ and those on $\mathbf{H}_1 \times \mathbf{C}$ (here $\mathbf H_n$ denotes the Siegel upper half space of degree $n$). As applications, we can understand better the growth of Petersson norms of Fourier Jacobi coefficients of Klingen Eisenstein series, which in turn has applications to finer issues about representation numbers of quadrat…
In [6], Kohnen proves that if $Γ=Γ_0(N)$ where $N$ is a square-free integer, then any modular function of weight $0$ for $Γ$ having a divisor supported at the cusps is an $η$-product. Under the condition of having rational Fourier coefficients, we are able to extend Kohnen's result to the case where $N$ is the square of a prime. If the rationality condition does not hold, we show that the statement is no longer true by providing a family of counter-examples that generalizes naturally the Dedekind $η$-function. This paper fits within the framework of generalized modular forms in the sense of Kn…
For a positive integer $N$, let $\mathscr C(N)$ be the subgroup of $J_0(N)$ generated by the equivalence classes of cuspidal divisors of degree $0$ and $\mathscr C(N)(\mathbb Q):=\mathscr C(N)\cap J_0(N)(\mathbb Q)$ be its $\mathbb Q$-rational subgroup. Let also $\mathscr C_{\mathbb Q}(N)$ be the subgroup of $\mathscr C(N)(\mathbb Q)$ generated by $\mathbb Q$-rational cuspidal divisors. We prove that when $N=n^2M$ for some integer $n$ dividing $24$ and some squarefree integer $M$, the two groups $\mathscr C(N)(\mathbb Q)$ and $\mathscr C_{\mathbb Q}(N)$ are equal. To achieve this, we show that…
Let $Γ$ be the Fuchsian group of the first kind. For an even integer $m\ge 4$, we study $m/2$-holomorphic differentials in terms of space of (holomorphic) cuspidal modular forms $S_m(Γ)$. We also give in depth study of Wronskians of cuspidal modular forms and their divisors.
Let $N$ be a non-squarefree positive integer and let $\ell$ be an odd prime such that $\ell^2$ does not divide $N$. Consider the Hecke ring $\mathbb{T}(N)$ of weight $2$ for $Γ_0(N)$, and its rational Eisenstein primes of $\mathbb{T}(N)$ containing $\ell$, defined in Section 3. If $\mathfrak{m}$ is such a rational Eisenstein prime, then we prove that $\mathfrak{m}$ is of the form $(\ell, ~\mathcal{I}^D_{M, N})$, where the ideal $\mathcal{I}^D_{M, N}$ of $\mathbb{T}(N)$ is also defined in Section 3. Furthermore, we prove that $\mathcal{C}(N)[\mathfrak{m}] \neq 0$, where $\mathcal{C}(N)$ is the …
Let $f$ be a cuspidal Hecke eigenform of level 1. We prove the automorphy of the symmetric power lifting $\mathrm{Sym}^n f$ for every $n \geq 1$. We establish the same result for a more general class of cuspidal Hecke eigenforms, including all those associated to semistable elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$.
We consider the generalized Jacobian $\widetilde{J}_0(N)$ of a modular curve $X_0(N)$ with respect to a reduced divisor given by the sum of all cusps on it. When $N$ is a power of a prime $\geq 5$, we exhibit that the group of rational torsion points $\widetilde{J}_0(N)(\mathbb{Q})_{\mathrm{Tor}}$ tends to be much smaller than the classical Jacobian.
Given a quaternionic form G of a p-adic classical group (p odd) we classify all cuspidal irreducible representations of G with coefficients in an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from p. We prove two theorems: At first: Every irreducible cuspidal representation of G is induced from a cuspidal type, i.e. from a certain irreducible representation of a compact open subgroup of G, constructed from a beta-extension and a cuspidal representation of a finite group. Secondly we show that two intertwining cuspidal types of G are up to equivalence conjugate under some element of G.
In two previous papers we used the geometry of complete polyhedral fans to construct a subring $\TTT (l)$ of the modular forms on $Γ_{1} (l)$, and showed that for weight two the cuspidal part of $\TTT (l)$ coincides with the space of cusp forms of analytic rank zero. In this paper we show that in weights greater than two, the cuspidal part of $\TTT (l)$ coincides with the space of all cusp forms.

We prove that the central values of additive twists of a cuspidal $L$-function define a quantum modular form in the sense of Zagier, generalizing recent results of Bettin and Drappeau. From this we deduce a reciprocity law for the twisted first moment of multiplicative twists of cuspidal $L$-functions, similar to reciprocity laws discovered by Conrey for the twisted second moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions. Furthermore we give an interpretation of quantum modularity at infinity for additive twists of $L$-functions of weight 2 cusp forms in terms of the corresponding functional equations.
We propose a conjectural explicit isogeny from the Jacobians of hyperelliptic Drinfeld modular curves to the Jacobians of hyperelliptic modular curves of $\mathcal{D}$-elliptic sheaves. The kernel of the isogeny is a subgroup of the cuspidal divisor group constructed by examining the canonical maps from the cuspidal divisor group into the component groups.
For any positive integer $N$, we prove that the rational torsion subgroup of $J_0(N)$ agrees with its rational cuspidal subgroups up to a factor of $6N\prod_{p\mid N}(p^2-1)$. Moreover, for modular Jacobians of the form $J_0(DC)$ with $D$ a positive square-free integer and $C$ any positive divisor of $D$, we prove that the $ψ$-part of the torsion subgroup of $J_0(DC)$ agrees with the $ψ$-part of its cuspidal subgroup up to a factor of $6D\prod_{p\mid D}(p^2-1)$, where $ψ$ is any quadratic character of conductor dividing $C$.
Let $\frak{n}$ be a square-free ideal of $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. We study the rational torsion subgroup of the Jacobian variety $J_0(\frak{n})$ of the Drinfeld modular curve $X_0(\frak{n})$. We prove that for any prime number $\ell$ not dividing $q(q-1)$, the $\ell$-primary part of this group coincides with that of the cuspidal divisor class group. We further determine the structure of the $\ell$-primary part of the cuspidal divisor class group for any prime $\ell$ not dividing $q-1$.
In this article, we consider the group $F_1^\infty(N)$ of modular units on $X_1(N)$ that have divisors supported on the cusps lying over $\infty$ of $X_0(N)$, called the $\infty$-cusps. For each positive integer $N$, we will give an explicit basis for the group $F_1^\infty(N)$. This enables us to compute the group structure of the rational torsion subgroup $C_1^\infty(N)$ of the Jacobian $J_1(N)$ of $X_1(N)$ generated by the differences of the $\infty$-cusps. In addition, based on our numerical computation, we make a conjecture on the structure of the $p$-primary part of $C_1^\infty(p^n)$ for …
Modular graph functions are $SL(2,{\mathbb Z})$-invariant functions associated with Feynman graphs of a two-dimensional conformal field theory on a torus of modulus $τ$. For one-loop graphs they reduce to real analytic Eisenstein series. We obtain the Fourier series, including the constant and non-constant Fourier modes, of all two-loop modular graph functions, as well as their Poincaré series with respect to $Γ_\infty \backslash PSL(2,{\mathbb Z})$. The Fourier and Poincaré series provide the tools to compute the Petersson inner product of two-loop modular graph functions using Rankin-Selberg…
We consider a special theta lift $θ(f)$ from cuspidal Siegel modular forms $f$ on $\mathrm{Sp}_4$ to "modular forms" $θ(f)$ on $\mathrm{SO}(4,4)$. This lift can be considered an analogue of the Saito-Kurokawa lift, where now the image of the lift is representations of $\mathrm{SO}(4,4)$ that are quaternionic at infinity. We relate the Fourier coefficients of $θ(f)$ to those of $f$, and in particular prove that $θ(f)$ is nonzero and has algebraic Fourier coefficients if $f$ does. Restricting the $θ(f)$ to $G_2 \subseteq \mathrm{SO}(4,4)$, we obtain cuspidal modular forms on $G_2$ of arbitrarily…
Let $E/F$ be a quadratic extension of non-archimedean local fields, and let $\ell$ be a prime number different from the residual characteristic of $F$. For a complex cuspidal representation $π$ of $GL(n,E)$, the Asai $L$-factor $L^+(X,π)$ has a pole at $X=1$ if and only if $π$ is $GL(n,F)$-distinguished. In this paper we solve the problem of characterising the occurrence of a pole at $X=1$ of $L^+(X,π)$ when $π$ is an $\ell$-modular cuspidal representation of $GL(n,E)$: we show that $L^+(X,π)$ has a pole at $X=1$ if and only if $π$ is a relatively banal distinguished representation; namely $π$…
We prove that if $F$ is a non-zero (possibly non-cuspidal) vector-valued Siegel modular form of any degree, then it has infinitely many non-zero Fourier coefficients which are indexed by half-integral matrices having odd, square-free (and thus fundamental) discriminant. The proof uses an induction argument in the setting of vector-valued modular forms. In an Appendix, as an application of a variant of our result and building upon the work of A. Pollack, we show how to obtain an unconditional proof of the functional equation of the spinor $L$-function of a holomorphic cuspidal Siegel eigenform …
We consider cuspidal representations in spaces of automorphic forms for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(I)$ of Hilbert modular groups for some number field $F$. To each such representation are associated the eigenvalue $λ_j$ of the Casimir operator at each real place $j$ of $F$, and the number $\ld_{\mathfrak p}$ parametrizing the eigenvalue of the Hecke operator $T_{\mathfrak p^2}$ at each finite place $\mathfrak p$ outside the ideal $I$. We study the joint distribution of the $λ_j$ for all real places $j$, and the $\ld_{\mathfrak p}$ for finitely many $\mathfrak p$ outside $I$, over the cuspida…
In this note, we show that modular cusp forms have no higher direct images between toroidal and minimal compactifiations. --- Dans cette note, nous montrons que les faisceaux de formes modulaires cuspidales n'ont pas d'image directe superieure entre compactifications toroidale et minimale.
In this note we consider a question of Ono, concerning which spaces of classical modular forms can be generated by sums of $η$-quotients. We give some new examples of spaces of modular forms which can be generated as sums of $η$-quotients, and show that we can write all modular forms of level $Γ_0(N)$ as rational functions of $η$-products.
In this article, we determine the structure of the $p$-primary subgroup of the cuspidal rational torsion subgroup of the Jacobian $J_1(p^n)$ of the modular curve $X_1(p^n)$ for a regular prime $p$.
We show that the systems of Hecke eigenvalues occurring in the spaces of Siegel modular forms (mod p) of fixed dimension g, fixed level N, and varying weight, are the same as the systems occurring in the spaces of Siegel cusp forms with the same parameters and varying weight. In particular, in the case g=1, this says that the Hecke eigensystems (mod p) coming from classical modular forms are the same as those coming from cusp forms. The proof uses restriction to the superspecial locus. We also give a comparison of cusp forms on the Satake compactification versus the toroidal compactifications …
We describe an algorithm for computing a $\Q$-rational model for the quotient of a modular curve by an automorphism group, under mild assumptions on the curve and the automorphisms, by determining $q$-expansions for a basis of the corresponding space of cusp forms. We also give a moduli interpretation for general morphisms between modular curves.
We prove congruences between cuspidal newforms and Eisenstein series of prime level, which generalize Ramanujan's congruence. Such congruences were recently found by Billerey and Menares, and we refine them by specifying the Atkin-Lehner eigenvalue of the newform involved. We show that similar refinements hold for the level raising congruences between cuspidal newforms of different levels, due to Ribet and Diamond. The proof relies on studying the new subspace and the Eisenstein subspace of the space of period polynomials for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$, and on a version of Ihara's lemma.
We extend some results of Gun, Murty, and Rath on elliptic modular forms. We take ANY Fuchsian triangle group with a cusp and look at power series expansions in a natural parameter around that cusp. Consider the automorphic forms for such a triangle group whose power series expansions in the natural parameter have algebraic coefficients. We show that the zeros of such forms are either transcendental or are "CM." By "CM," we mean they correspond to abelian varieties with complex multiplication. This result is the first of its kind in the case of non-arithmetic groups.
Let $\f$ be a primitive, cuspidal Hilbert modular form of parallel weight. We investigate the Rankin convolution $L$-values $L(\f,\g,s)$, where $\g$ is a theta-lift modular form corresponding to a finite-order character. We prove weak forms of Kato's `false Tate curve' congruences for these values, of the form predicted by conjectures in non-commmutative Iwasawa theory.
For a positive integer $N$, let $\mathscr{C}_N(\mathbb{Q})$ be the rational cuspidal subgroup of $J_0(N)$ and $\mathscr{C}(N)$ be the rational cuspidal divisor class group of $X_0(N)$, which are both subgroups of the rational torsion subgroup of $J_0(N)$. We prove that two groups $\mathscr{C}_N(\mathbb{Q})$ and $\mathscr{C}(N)$ are equal when $N=p^2M$ for any prime $p$ and any squarefree integer $M$. To achieve this we show that all modular units on $X_0(N)$ can be written as products of certain functions $F_{m, h}$, which are constructed from generalized Dedekind eta functions. Also, we deter…
An eta-quotient of level $N$ is a modular form of the shape $f(z) = \prod_{δ| N} η(δz)^{r_δ}$. We study the problem of determining levels $N$ for which the graded ring of holomorphic modular forms for $Γ_{0}(N)$ is generated by (holomorphic, respectively weakly holomorphic) eta-quotients of level $N$. In addition, we prove that if $f(z)$ is a holomorphic modular form that is non-vanishing on the upper half plane and has integer Fourier coefficients at infinity, then $f(z)$ is an integer multiple of an eta-quotient. Finally, we use our results to determine the structure of the cuspidal subgroup…
In this paper, we show that, on average, the derivatives of $L$-functions of cuspidal Hilbert modular forms with sufficiently large weight $k$ do not vanish on the line segments $\Im(s)=t_{0}$, $\Re(s)\in(\frac{k-1}{2},\frac{k}{2}-ε)\cup(\frac{k}{2}+ε,\frac{k+1}{2})$. This is analogous to the case of classical modular forms.
The aim of this article is to study the fields generated by the Fourier coefficients of Hilbert newforms at arbitrary cusps. Precisely, given a cuspidal Hilbert newform $f$ and a matrix $σ$ in (a suitable conjugate of) the Hilbert modular group, we give a cyclotomic extension of the field generated by the Fourier coefficients at infinity which contains all the Fourier coefficients of $f||_kσ$.
From the Modularity Theorem proven by Wiles, Taylor, et al, we know that all elliptic curves are modular. It has been shown by Martin and Ono exactly which are represented by eta-quotients, and some examples of elliptic curves represented by modular forms that are linear combinations of eta-quotients have been given by Pathakjee, RosnBrick, and Yoong. In this paper, we first show that eta-quotients which are modular for any congruence subgroup of level $N$ coprime to $6$ can be viewed as modular for $Γ_0(N)$. We then categorize when even weight eta-quotients can exist in $M_k (Γ_1(p))$ and $M_…
In this note we study the symmetric powers of strongly modular icosahedral representations $ρ$ of ${\rm Gal} (\bar{F}/F)$, $F$ a number field, and their twisted $L$--functions. We prove that for such $ρ$, there exists a cuspidal automorphic representation $Π= Π_{\infty} \otimes Π_{f}$ of $GL_{6} (\mathbb{A}_{F})$ such that $L (s, {\rm sym}^{5} (ρ)) = L (s, Π_{f})$. One sees that ${\rm sym}^{5} (ρ)$ is twist equivalent to $ρ' \otimes {\rm sym}^{2} (ρ)$ for another modular icosahedral representation $ρ'$, and our theorem is a special case of a cuspidality criterion formulated and proved in this …
In this paper, we will study the arithmetic of the Eisenstein part of the modular Jacobians. In the first section, we introduce some general preliminaries of the arithmetic theory of modular curves that we will need later. In the second section, we give an example of modular abelian varieties due to Gross and study its properties in some details. In the third section, we define Eisenstein quotients of the modular Jacobians in general and give a criterion of the non-triviality of Heegner points on such Eisenstein quotients. The last two sections return to the concrete examples when the level of…
