In this note we study the symmetric powers of strongly modular icosahedral representations $ρ$ of ${\rm Gal} (\bar{F}/F)$, $F$ a number field, and their twisted $L$--functions. We prove that for such $ρ$, there exists a cuspidal automorphic representation $Π= Π_{\infty} \otimes Π_{f}$ of $GL_{6} (\mathbb{A}_{F})$ such that $L (s, {\rm sym}^{5} (ρ)) = L (s, Π_{f})$. One sees that ${\rm sym}^{5} (ρ)$ is twist equivalent to $ρ' \otimes {\rm sym}^{2} (ρ)$ for another modular icosahedral representation $ρ'$, and our theorem is a special case of a cuspidality criterion formulated and proved in this paper, which may be of independent interest, for the Kim--Shahidi automorphic tensor product $π\boxtimes {\rm sym}^{2} (π')$, where $π$ and $π'$ are cuspidal automorphic representations of $GL (2) / F$. We also give a complete structure theory of modular icosahedral representations. As a result, we prove that $L (s, {\rm sym}^{m} (ρ) \otimes χ)$ does not admit any Landau--Siegel zero when it is not divisible by $L$--functions of quadratic characters. In general, there is no such divisibility and and there are no Landau--Siegel zeros for such $L$--functions.
For any number field F, call a cusp form πon GL(2)/F {\it special icosahedral}, or just s-icosahedral for short, if πis not solvable polyhedral, and for a suitable "conjugate" cusp form π' on GL(2)/F, sym^3(π) is isomorphic to sym^3(π'), and the symmetric fifth power L-series of πequals the Rankin-Selberg L-function L(s, sym^2(π') x π) (up to a finite number of Euler factors). Then the point of this Note is to obtain the following result: Let πbe s-icosahedral (of trivial central character). Then π_f is algebraic without local components of Steinberg type, π_\infty is of Galois type, and π_v i…
Suppose $π$, $π'$ are cusp forms on GL$(2)$, not of solvable polyhedral type, such that they have the same symmetric cubes. Then we show that either $π$, $π'$ are twist equivalent, or else a certain degree $36$ $L$-function associated to the pair has a pole at $s=1$. If we further assume that the symmetric fifth power of $π$ is automorphic, then in the latter case, $π$ is icosahedral in a suitable sense, agreeing with the usual notion when there is an associated Galois representation.
Using ideas of Ramakrishnan, we consider the icosahedral analogue of the theorems of Sarnak and Brumley on Hecke-Maass newforms with Fourier coefficients in a quadratic order. Although we are unable to conclude the existence of an associated Galois representation in this case, we show that one can deduce some implications of such an association, including weak automorphy of all symmetric powers and the value distribution of Fourier coefficients predicted by the Chebotarev density theorem.
Artin conjectured that certain Galois representations should give rise to entire L-series. We give some history on the conjecture and motivation of why it should be true by discussing the one-dimensional case. The first known example to verify the conjecture in the icosahedral case did not surface until Buhler's work in 1977. We explain how this icosahedral representation is attached to a modular elliptic curve isogenous to its Galois conjugates, and then explain how it is associated to a cusp form of weight 5 with level prime to 5.
We derive a formula for Greenberg's $L$-invariant of Tate twists of the symmetric sixth power of an ordinary non-CM cuspidal newform of weight $\geq4$, under some technical assumptions. This requires a "sufficiently rich" Galois deformation of the symmetric cube which we obtain from the symmetric cube lift to $\GSp(4)_{/\QQ}$ of Ramakrishnan--Shahidi and the Hida theory of this group developed by Tilouine--Urban. The $L$-invariant is expressed in terms of derivatives of Frobenius eigenvalues varying in the Hida family. Our result suggests that one could compute Greenberg's $L$-invariant of all…
Given a cuspidal automorphic representation $π$ for GL(3) over a number field and a positive integer $k$, assume that the symmetric $m$th power lifts of $π$ are isobaric automorphic for $m \leq k$, cuspidal for $m \leq k-1$, and that certain associated Rankin-Selberg products are isobaric automorphic. Then the number of cuspidal isobaric summands in the $k$th symmetric power lift is bounded above by 3 when $k \geq 7$, and bounded above by 2 when $k \geq 19$ with $k \equiv 1 \pmod 3$. We then investigate the analogous problem for GL(4).
Let $f$ be a cuspidal Hecke eigenform of level 1. We prove the automorphy of the symmetric power lifting $\mathrm{Sym}^n f$ for every $n \geq 1$. We establish the same result for a more general class of cuspidal Hecke eigenforms, including all those associated to semistable elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$.
In this paper we prove the following conditional result: Let F be a number field, and pi a cusp form on GL(2)/F which is not solvable polyhedral. Assume that all the symmetric powers sym^m(pi) are modular, i.e., define automorphic forms on GL(m+1)/F. If sym^6(pi) is cuspidal, then all the symmetric powers are cuspidal, for all m. Moreover, sym^6(pi) is Eisenteinian iff sym^5(pi) is an abelian twist of the functorial product of pi with the symmetric square of a cusp form pi' on GL(2)/F.
We prove that there are infinitely many Maass--Hecke cuspforms over the field $\mathbb{Q}[\sqrt{-3}]$ such that the corresponding symmetric cube $L$-series does not vanish at the center of the critical strip. This is done by using a result of Ginzburg, Jiang and Rallis which shows that the symmetric cube non-vanishing happens if and only if a certain triple product integral involving the cusp form and the cubic theta function on $\mathbb{Q}[\sqrt{-3}]$ does not vanish. We use spectral theory and the properties of the cubic theta function to show that the non-vanishing of this triple product oc…
This note is concerned with the zeros of holomorphic Hecke cusp forms of large weight on the modular surface. The zeros of such forms are symmetric about three geodesic segments and we call those zeros that lie on these segments, real. Our main results give estimates for the number of real zeros as the weight goes to infinity.
We prove an explicit integral representation -- involving the pullback of a suitable Siegel Eisenstein series -- for the twisted standard $L$-function associated to a holomorphic vector-valued Siegel cusp form of degree $n$ and arbitrary level. In contrast to all previously proved pullback formulas in this situation, our formula involves only scalar-valued functions despite being applicable to $L$-functions of vector-valued Siegel cusp forms. The key new ingredient in our method is a novel choice of local vectors at the archimedean place which allows us to exactly compute the archimedean local…
Let $π$ be a unitary automorphic cuspidal representation of $GL_2(\mathbb{Q}_\mathbb{A})$ with Fourier coefficients $λ_π(n)$. Asymptotic expansions of certain sums of $λ_π(n)$ are proved using known functorial liftings from $GL_2$, including symmetric powers, isobaric sums, exterior square from $GL_4$ and base change. These asymptotic expansions are manifestation of the underlying functoriality and reflect value distribution of $λ_π(n)$ on integers, squares, cubes and fourth powers.
We show the existence of integral models for cuspidal representations of GL(2,q), whose reduction modulo p can be identified with the cokernel of a differential operator on F_{q}[X,Y] defined by J-P. Serre. These integral models come from the crystalline cohomology of the projective curve XY^{q}-X^{q}Y-Z^{q+1}=0. As an application, we can extend a construction of C. Khare and B. Edixhoven (2003) giving a cohomological analogue of the Hasse invariant operator acting on spaces of modp modular forms for GL(2).
We explicitly construct cusp forms on the orthogonal group of signature $(1,8n+1)$ for an arbitrary natural number $n$ as liftings from Maass cusp forms of level one. In our previous works, the fundamental tool to show the automorphy of the lifting was the converse theorem by Maass. In this paper, we use the Fourier expansion of the theta lifts by Borcherds instead. We also study cuspidal representations generated by such cusp forms and show that they are irreducible and that all of their non-archimedean local components are non-tempered while the archimedean component is tempered, if the Maas…
Let $ϕ$ be an $L^2$-normalized Hecke--Maaß cusp form for $\mathrm{PGL}_n(\mathbb{Z}[i])$ on the locally symmetric space $X:=\mathrm{PGL}_n(\mathbb{Z}[i])\backslash \mathrm{PGL}_n(\mathbb{C}) / \mathrm{PU}_n$. If $Ω$ is a compact subset of $X$, then we prove the bound $\|ϕ|_Ω\|_{\infty}\ll_Ω λ_ϕ^{n(n-1)/4-δ}$ for some $δ>0$ depending only on $n$, where $λ_ϕ$ is the Laplace eigenvalue of $ϕ$.
In this article, we study the co-period integral attached to an automorphic form on $\GL(2)$ and two exceptional theta series on the cubic Kazhdan-Patterson cover of $\GL(2)$. In the local aspect, we show the $\Hom$-space is always of one dimension and conduct the unramified calculations. In the global aspect, we give the Euler decomposition for the co-period integrals of Eisenstein series and propose an Ichino-Ikeda type conjecture relating the co-period integrals of cuspidal forms to the central critical value of symmetric cube $L$-functions. We also deduce from the local multiplicity one re…
We prove a spectral decomposition formula for averages of Zagier L-series in terms of moments of symmetric square L-functions associated to Maass and holomorphic cusp forms of levels 4, 16, 64.
Let $\bf{G}$ be the connected reductive group of type $E_{7,3}$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ and $\mathfrak{T}$ be the corresponding symmetric domain in $\mathbb{C}^{27}$. Let $Γ=\bf{G}(\mathbb{Z})$ be the arithmetic subgroup defined by Baily. In this paper, for any positive integer $k\ge 10$, we will construct a (non-zero) holomorphic cusp form on $\mathfrak{T}$ of weight $2k$ with respect to $Γ$ from a Hecke cusp form in $S_{2k-8}(SL_2(\mathbb{Z}))$. This lift is an analogue of Ikeda's construction.
In this article, we establish an asymptotic lower bound estimate on the contribution of cuspidal automorphic representations of ${\rm GL}_4(\mathbb A_{\mathbb Q})$ to cuspidal cohomology of the ${\rm GL}_4$ which are obtained from automorphic tensor product of two automorphic representations of ${\rm GL}_2(\mathbb A_{\mathbb Q})$ of given weights and with varying level structure. In the end, we also prove that the symmetric cube of a representation of ${\rm GL}_2$ and the automorphic tensor product of two representations of ${\rm GL}_2$ can not be equal (up to a twist by a character of ${\rm G…
Given a maximal even-integral lattice $\cL$ of signature $(m+, 2-)$ with an odd $m\geq 3$, we consider the holomorphic cusp forms $F$ of weight $l$ on the bounded symmetric domain of type IV of dimension $m$ with respect to the discriminant subgroup of the orthogonal group $O(\cL)$ defined by $\cL$. Under a non-negativity assumption on the central $L$-values, we prove an equidistribution result of Satake parameters in an ensemble constructed from the central values of standard $L$-functions and the square of the Whittaker-Bessel periods.
We explicitly compute the special values of the standard $L$-function $L(s, F_{12}, \mathrm{St})$ at the critical points $s\in\{-8, -6, -4, -2, 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9\}$, where $F_{12}$ is the unique (up to a scalar) Siegel cusp form of degree $3$ and weight $12$, which was constructed by Miyawaki. These values are proportional to the product of the Petersson norms of symmetric square of Ramanujan's $Δ$ and the cusp form of weight $20$ for ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ by a rational number and some power of $π$. We use the Rankin-Selberg method and apply the Holomorphic projection to compute these values…
We study sums of additively twisted Fourier coefficients of a holomorphic cusp form, a Maass cusp form, and the symmetric-square lift of a holomorphic cusp form. We obtain bounds that are uniform with respect to both the form and the terms of the additive twist. We also improve a bound on a sum of additively twisted Fourier coefficients of a holomorphic cusp form that have also been twisted by a nonlinear exponential term. This last bound is uniform with respect to the terms of the additive twist but it is not uniform with respect to the form.
Let $f$ be a holomorphic cusp form of even weight $k$ for the modular group $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$, which is assumed to be a common eigenfunction for all Hecke operators. For positive integer $n$, let $\text{Sym}^n(f)$ be the symmetric nth power lifting of $f$ , which was shown by Newton and Thorne to be automorphic and cuspidal. In this paper, we construct certain auxiliary $L$-functions to show that Siegel zeros of $\text{Sym}^n(f)$ do not exist, for each given $n$, utilizing the above functoriality result. As an application, we give a lower bound of those symmetric power $L$-functions at $s=1$ …
This article grew out of my talk in "The Legacy of Srinivasa Ramanujan" conference where I spoke about some techniques to prove algebraicity results for the special values of symmetric cube L-functions attached to the Ramanujan Δ-function. If one wishes to compare these different techniques, then one needs to compare various automorphic periods attached to the symmetric cube transfer of Δ. Motivated by this problem, in this article we provide comparison results for Whittaker-Betti periods, Shalika-Betti periods and certain relative periods attached to a given cohomological cuspidal automorphic…
We prove an automorphic analogue of Deligne's conjecture for symmetric fourth $L$-functions of Hilbert modular forms. We extend the result of Morimoto based on generalization and refinement of the results of Grobner and Lin to cohomological irreducible essentially conjugate self-dual cuspidal automorphic representations of ${\rm GL}_2$ and ${\rm GL}_3$ over CM-fields.
We prove the exceptional zero conjecture for the symmetric powers of CM cuspidal eigenforms at ordinary primes. In other words, we determine the trivial zeroes of the associated p-adic L-functions, compute the L-invariants, and show that they agree with Greenberg's L-invariants.
We prove that the moduli space of stable n-pointed curves of genus one and the projector associated to the alternating representation of the symmetric group on n letters define (for n>1) the Chow motive corresponding to cusp forms of weight n+1 for SL(2,Z). This provides an alternative (in level one) to the construction of Scholl.
In this paper, we give a dimension formula for spaces of Siegel cusp forms of general degree with respect to neat arithmetic subgroups. The formula was conjectured before by several researchers. The dimensions are expressed by special values of Shintani zeta functions for spaces of symmetric matrices at non-positive integers. This formula was given by Shintani for only a small part of the geometric side of the trace formula. To be precise, it is the contribution of unipotent elements corresponding to the partitions $(2^j,1^{2n-2j})$, where $n$ denotes the degree and $0\leq j \leq n$. Hence, ou…
Let $π$ be a regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representation of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb A}_F)$ for a number field $F$. We consider certain periods attached to $π$. These periods were originally defined by Harder when $n=2$, and later by Mahnkopf when $F = {\mathbb Q}$. In the first part of the paper we analyze the behaviour of these periods upon twisting $π$ by algebraic Hecke characters. In the latter part of the paper we consider Shimura's periods associated to a modular form. If $ϕ_χ$ is the cusp form associated to a character $χ$ of a quadratic extension, then we relate the periods of $…
Let $\frak T_2$ (resp. $\mathfrak{T}$) be the Hermitian symmetric domain of $Spin(2,10)$ (resp. $E_{7,3}$). In the previous work, we constructed holomorphic cusp forms on $\mathfrak{T}$ from elliptic cusp forms with respect to $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$. By using such cusp forms we construct holomorphic cusp forms on $\mathfrak{T}_2$ which are similar to Miyawaki lift in symplectic groups established by T. Ikeda.
We study the signs of the Fourier coefficients of a newform. Let $f$ be a normalized newform of weight $k$ for $Γ_0(N)$. Let $a_f(n)$ be the $n$th Fourier coefficient of $f$. For any fixed positive integer $m$, we study the distribution of the signs of $\{a_f(p^m)\}_p$, where $p$ runs over all prime numbers. We also find out the abscissas of absolute convergence of two Dirichlet series with coefficients involving the Fourier coefficients of cusp forms and the coefficients of symmetric power $L$-functions.
Let $\mathitΠ$ be a cohomological irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation of ${\rm GL}_2(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb F})$ with central character $ω_{\mathitΠ}$ over a totally real number field ${\mathbb F}$. In this paper, we prove the algebraicity of the near central non-critical value of the symmetric fourth $L$-function of $\mathitΠ$ twisted by $ω_{\mathitΠ}^{-2}$. The algebraicity is expressed in terms of the Petersson norm of the normalized newform of $\mathitΠ$ and the top degree Whittaker period of the Gelbart-Jacquet lift ${\rm Sym}^2\mathitΠ$ of $\mathitΠ$.
We study the $2k$-th moment at the central point of the family of symmetric square $L$-functions attached to holomorphic Hecke cusp forms of level one, weight $κ$. We establish sharp lower bounds for all real $k \geq 1/2$ unconditionally. Assuming the truth of the generalized Riemann hypothesis, we also obtain sharp lower bounds for all real $0 \leq k < 1/2$ and sharp upper bounds for all real $k \geq 0$.
The purpose of this paper is to prove the long awaited holomorphy of the third symmetric power L-functions attached to nonmonomial cusp forms of GL_2 over an arbitrary number field on the whole complex plane.
In this paper we prove two new cases of Langlands functoriality. The first is a functorial product for cusp forms on $GL_2\times GL_3$ as automorphic forms on $GL_6$, from which we obtain our second case, the long awaited functorial symmetric cube map for cusp forms on $GL_2$. We prove these by applying a recent version of converse theorems of Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro to analytic properties of certain $L$-functions obtained from the method of Eisenstein series (Langlands-Shahidi method). As a consequence, we prove the bound 5/34 for Hecke eigenvalues of Maass forms over any number field a…
Let $F$ be a cuspidal eigenform of even weight and trivial nebentypus, let $p$ be a prime not dividing the level of $F$, and let $ρ_F$ be the $p$-adic Galois representation attached to $F$. Assume that the $L$-function attached to the symmetric cube of $ρ_F$ vanishes to odd order at its central point. Then under some mild hypotheses, and conditional on certain consequences of Arthur's conjectures, we construct a nontrivial element in the Bloch--Kato Selmer group of an appropriate twist of the symmetric cube of $ρ_F$, in accordance with the Bloch--Kato conjectures. Our technique is based on the…
We consider distinction of representations in the context of $p$-adic Galois symmetric spaces. We provide new sufficient conditions for distinction of parabolically induced representations in terms of similar conditions on the inducing data and deduce a characterization for distinction of representations parabolically induced from cuspidal. We explicate the results further for classical groups and give several applications, in particular, concerning the preservation of distinction via Langlands functoriality. We relate our results with a conjecture of Dipendra Prasad.
Let $E/F$ be a quadratic extension of non-archimedean local fields, and let $\ell$ be a prime number different from the residual characteristic of $F$. For a complex cuspidal representation $π$ of $GL(n,E)$, the Asai $L$-factor $L^+(X,π)$ has a pole at $X=1$ if and only if $π$ is $GL(n,F)$-distinguished. In this paper we solve the problem of characterising the occurrence of a pole at $X=1$ of $L^+(X,π)$ when $π$ is an $\ell$-modular cuspidal representation of $GL(n,E)$: we show that $L^+(X,π)$ has a pole at $X=1$ if and only if $π$ is a relatively banal distinguished representation; namely $π$…
We prove several results on the distribution of values of $L$-functions at the edge of the critical strip, by constructing and studying a large class of random Euler products. Among new applications, we study families of symmetric power $L$-functions of holomorphic cusp forms in the level aspect (assuming the automorphy of these $L$-functions) at $s=1$, functions in the Selberg class (in the height aspect), and quadratic twists of a fixed $GL(m)/{\Bbb Q}$-automorphic cusp form at $s=1$.
In this paper, we consider the (partial) symmetric square $L$-function $L^S(s,π,Sym^2\otimesχ)$ of an irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation $π$ of $\GL_r(\A)$ twisted by a Hecke character $χ$. In particular, we will show that the $L$-function $L^S(s,π,Sym^2\otimesχ)$ is holomorphic except at $s=0$ and $s=1$, and moreover the possible poles could occur only when $χ^rω^2=1$, where $ω$ is the central character of $π$. Our method of proof is essentially a (nontrivial) modification of the one by Bump and Ginzburg in which they considered the case $χ=1$.
A holomorphic discrete series representation $(L_π,H_π)$ of a connected semi-simple real Lie group $G$ is associated with an irreducible representation $(π,V_π)$ of its maximal compact subgroup $K$. The underlying space $H_π$ can be realized as certain holomorphic $V_π$-valued functions on the bounded symmetric domain $\mathcal{D}\cong G/K$. By the Berezin quantization, we transfer $B(H_π)$ into End$(V_π)$-valued functions on $\mathcal{D}$. For a lattice $Γ$ of $G$, we give the formula of a faithful normal tracial state on the commutant $L_π(Γ)'$ of the group von Neumann algebra $L_π(Γ)''$. We…
