Given a cuspidal automorphic representation of GL(2) over a global function field, we establish a comprehensive cuspidality criterion for symmetric powers. The proof is via passage to the Galois side, possible over function fields thanks to the Langlands correspondence of L. Lafforgue and additional results of G. Henniart and B. Lemaire. Our work is guided by the number fields results of Kim-Shahidi and Ramakrishnan.
For a cuspidal automorphic representation Πof GL(4,A), H. Kim proved that the exterior square transfer \wedge^2Πis an isobaric automorphic representation of GL(6,A). In this paper we characterize those representations Πfor which \wedge^2Πis cuspidal.
In [Ar13], Arthur classifies the automorphic discrete spectrum of symplectic groups up to global Arthur packets, based on the theory of endoscopy. It is an interesting and basic question to ask: which global Arthur packets contain no cuspidal automorphic representations? The investigation on this question can be regarded as a further development of the topics originated from the classical theory of singular automorphic forms. The results obtained yield a better understanding of global Arthur packets and of the structure of local unramified components of the cuspidal spectrum, and hence are clo…
This paper was motivated by a question of Avner Ash, asking if it is possible to construct non-selfdual, non-monomial, cuspidal cohomology classes for suitable congruence subgroups Γof SL(n,\Z). Such a construction, in special examples, has been known for some time for n=3; it is of course impossible for n=2. We show in this paper the existence of many such examples for n=6, which are primitive, by making use of the functorial product on GL(2) x GL(3), which was recently shown to be automorphic by Kim and Shahidi. We establish a general cuspidality criterion for this product, which is essentia…
Irreducible representations are the building blocks of general, semisimple Galois representations ρ, and cuspidal representations are the building blocks of automorphic forms πof the general linear group. It is expected that when an object of the former type is associated to one of the latter type, usually in terms of an identity of L-functions, the irreducibility of the former should imply the cuspidality of the latter, and vice-versa. It is not a simple matter - at all - to prove this expectation in either direction, and nothing much is known in dimensions >2. The main result of this article…
Given a pair of distinct unitary cuspidal automorphic representations for GL(n) over a number field, let S denote the set of finite places at which the automorphic representations are unramified and their associated Hecke eigenvalues differ. In this note, we demonstrate how conjectures on the automorphy and possible cuspidality of adjoint lifts and Rankin-Selberg products imply lower bounds on the size of S. We also obtain further results for GL(3).
Generalising the recent method of Andreatta, Iovita, and Pilloni for cuspidal forms, we construct an eigenvariety for symplectic and unitary groups that parametrises systems of eigenvalues of overconvergent and locally analytic $p$-adic automorphic forms. This is achieved by gluing some intermediates eigenvarieties of a fixed 'degree of cuspidality'. The dimension of these eigenvarieties is explicit and depends on the degree of cuspidality, it is maximal for cuspidal forms and it is $1$ for forms that are 'not cuspidal at all'. Under mild assumption, we are able to prove a conjecture of Urban …
In this note we study the symmetric powers of strongly modular icosahedral representations $ρ$ of ${\rm Gal} (\bar{F}/F)$, $F$ a number field, and their twisted $L$--functions. We prove that for such $ρ$, there exists a cuspidal automorphic representation $Π= Π_{\infty} \otimes Π_{f}$ of $GL_{6} (\mathbb{A}_{F})$ such that $L (s, {\rm sym}^{5} (ρ)) = L (s, Π_{f})$. One sees that ${\rm sym}^{5} (ρ)$ is twist equivalent to $ρ' \otimes {\rm sym}^{2} (ρ)$ for another modular icosahedral representation $ρ'$, and our theorem is a special case of a cuspidality criterion formulated and proved in this …
Xian-Jin Li gave a criterion for the Riemann hypothesis in terms of the positivity of a set of coefficients lambda_n, indexed by the integers. We define similar coefficients attached to principal automorphic L-functions over GL(N). We relate these coefficients to values of Weil's quadratic functional for the associated automorphic representation, and deduce a Riemann hypothesis criterion in terms of positivity of the real parts of these coefficients. We determine asymptotics of the coefficients, both unconditionally and on the Riemann hypothesis, as n increases. We show the existence of an ent…
In this paper, we extend Ginzburg-Rallis' integral representation for the exterior cube automorphic $L$-function of ${\rm GL}_6\times {\rm GL}_1$ to that of the quasi-split unitary similitude group ${\rm GU}_6$ and establish its analytic properties to determine the poles of this $L$-function. Furthermore, we introduce the automorphic induction for automorphic representations of ${\rm GU}_n$ and then show that the weak Langlands functorial lift for the automorphic induction exists for generic cuspidal automorphic representations. By using this automorphic induction, we give a conjectural criter…
We define generalized Li coefficients, called $τ-$Li coefficients for a very broad class $\mathcal{S}^{\sharp \flat }(σ_0, σ_1)$ of $L-$functions that contains the Selberg class, the class of all automorphic $L-$functions and the Rankin-Selberg $L-$functions, as well as products of suitable shifts of those functions. We prove the generalized Li criterion for zero-free regions of functions belonging to the class $\mathcal{S}^{\sharp \flat }(σ_0, σ_1)$, derive an arithmetic formula for the computation of $τ-$Li coefficients and conduct numerical investigation of $τ-$Li coefficients for a certain…
Let $τ$ denote the divisor function, and $f$ be any multiplicative function that satisfies some mild hypotheses. We establish the asymptotic formula or non-trivial upper bound for the shifted convolution sum $\sum_{n \leq X}f(n)τ(n-1)$. We also derive several applications to multiplicative functions in the automorphic context, including the functions $λ_π(n), \,μ(n)λ_π(n)$ and $λ_ϕ(n)^l$. Here $λ_π(n)$ denotes the $n$-th Dirichlet coefficient of $\text{GL}_m$ automorphic $L$-function $L(s,π)$ for an automorphic irreducible cuspidal representation $π$, $λ_ϕ(n)$ denotes the $n$-th Fourier coeffi…
We consider certain families of automorphic representations over number fields arising from the principle of functoriality of Langlands. Let $G$ be a reductive group over a number field $F$ which admits discrete series representations at infinity. Let $^{L}G=\hat G \rtimes \mathrm{Gal}(\bar F/F)$ be the associated $L$-group and $r:{}^L G\to \mathrm{GL}(d,\mathbb{C})$ a continuous homomorphism which is irreducible and does not factor through $\mathrm{Gal}(\bar F/F)$. The families under consideration consist of discrete automorphic representations of $G(\mathbb{A}_F)$ of given weight and level a…
In this paper, we establish a simple criterion for two $L$-functions $L_1$ and $L_2$ satisfying a functional equation (and some natural assumptions) to have infinitely many distinct zeros. Some related questions have already been answered in the particular case of Automorphic forms using so-called Converse Theorems. Deeper results can also be stated for elements of the Selberg class. However, we shall give here a general answer that do not use any advanced topics in analytic number theory. Therefore, this paper should be accessible to anyone who has some basic notions in measure-theory and adv…
