Xian-Jin Li gave a criterion for the Riemann hypothesis in terms of the positivity of a set of coefficients lambda_n, indexed by the integers. We define similar coefficients attached to principal automorphic L-functions over GL(N). We relate these coefficients to values of Weil's quadratic functional for the associated automorphic representation, and deduce a Riemann hypothesis criterion in terms of positivity of the real parts of these coefficients. We determine asymptotics of the coefficients, both unconditionally and on the Riemann hypothesis, as n increases. We show the existence of an entire function of exponential type that interpolates the generalized Li coefficients at integer values.
We prove Siegel-Walfisz type theorems (over long and short intervals) for the Fourier coefficients of certain automorphic $L$-functions and Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions over number fields.
In this article, we establish polynomial-growth bound for the sequence of Fourier coefficients associated to even integer weight vector-valued automorphic forms of Fuchsian groups of the first kind. At the end, their $L$-functions and exponential sums have been discussed.
We introduce a class of multiplicative functions in which each function satisfies some statistic conditions, and then prove that above functions are not correlated with finite degree polynomial nilsequences. Besides, we give two applications of this result. One is that the twisting of coefficients of automorphic $L$-function on $GL_m (m \geq 2)$ and polynomial nilsequences has logarithmic decay; the other is that the mean value of the Möbius function, coefficients of automorphic $L$-function and polynomial nilsequences also has logarithmic decay.
Let $π$ be an irreducible unitary cuspidal representation for $GL_m({\Bbb A}_{\Bbb Q})$, and let $L(s, π)$ be the automorphic $L$-function attached to $π$, which has a Dirichlet series expression in the half-plane $\mbox{Re} s>1$. When $π$ is self-contragredient, all the coefficients in the Dirichlet series expression are real. In this paper we give non-trivial lower bounds for the number of positive and negative coefficients, respectively.
For $m\ge 2$, let $π$ be an irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation of $GL_m(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ with unitary central character. Let $a_π(n)$ be the $n^{th}$ coefficient of the $L$-function attached to $π$. Goldfeld and Sengupta have recently obtained a bound for $\sum_{n\le x} a_π(n)$ as $x \rightarrow \infty$. For $m\ge 3$ and $π$ not a symmetric power of a $GL_2(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$-cuspidal automorphic representation with not all finite primes unramified for $π$, their bound is better than all previous bounds. In this paper, we further improve the bound of Golfeld and Se…
Let $π$ be an irreducible unitary cuspidal representation of $GL_m({\Bbb A}_{\Bbb Q})$ and $L(s,\,π)$ be the global $L-$function attached to $π$. If ${\rm Re}(s)>1$, $L(s,\,π)$ has a Dirichlet series expression. When $π$ is self-contragradient, all the coefficients of Dirichlet series are real. In this note, we shall give non-trivial lower bounds for the number of positive and negative coefficients respectively, which is an improvement on the recent work of Jianya Liu and Jie Wu.
We study Whittaker--Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms on a quasi-split unitary group. We reduce the analogue of the Ichino--Ikeda conjectures to a conjectural local statement using the descent method of Ginzburg--Rallis--Soudry.
In [J14], a conjecture was proposed on a relation between the global Arthur parameters and the structure of Fourier coefficients of the automorphic representations in the corresponding global Arthur packets. In this paper, we discuss the recent progress on this conjecture and certain problems which lead to better understanding of Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms. At the end, we extend a useful technical lemma to a few versions, which are more convenient for future applications.
We study the structures of Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms on symplectic groups based on their local and global structures related to Arthur parameters. This is a first step towards the general conjecture on the relation between the structure of Fourier coefficients and Arthur parameters given by the first named author in [J14].
We study certain cases of convoluted Fourier coefficients of $GL_n$-automorphic functions. We establish identities that express them in terms of Fourier coefficients related to unipotent orbits. The most general case that is studied is $(n)\circ(k,2^{n-1})$. The conclusions for this case is only up to a conjecture that I state. However there are certain special cases and other examples that are not based on any conjecture.
We show that Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms attached to minimal or next-to-minimal automorphic representations of ${\mathrm{SL}}_n(\mathbb{A})$ are completely determined by certain highly degenerate Whittaker coefficients. We give an explicit formula for the Fourier expansion, analogously to the Piatetski-Shapiro-Shalika formula. In addition, we derive expressions for Fourier coefficients associated to all maximal parabolic subgroups. These results have potential applications for scattering amplitudes in string theory.
In this paper, we study top Fourier coefficients of certain automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A})$. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Jiang on top Fourier coefficients of isobaric automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A})$ of form $$ Δ(τ_1, b_1) \boxplus Δ(τ_2, b_2) \boxplus \cdots \boxplus Δ(τ_r, b_r)\,, $$ where $Δ(τ_i,b_i)$'s are Speh representations in the discrete spectrum of $\mathrm{GL}_{a_ib_i}(\mathbb{A})$ with $τ_i$'s being unitary cuspidal representations of $\mathrm{GL}_{a_i}(\mathbb{A})$, and $n = \sum_{i=1}^r a_ib_i$. Endoscopic lifting i…
Let $G$ be the group of $\mathbb R$--points of a semisimple algebraic group $\mathcal G$ defined over $\mathbb Q$. Assume that $G$ is connected and noncompact. We study Fourier coefficients of Poincar\' e series attached to matrix coefficients of integrable discrete series. We use these results to construct explicit automorphic cuspidal realizations, which have appropriate Fourier coefficients $\neq 0$, of integrable discrete series in families of congruence subgroups. In the case of $G=Sp_{2n}(\mathbb R)$, we relate our work to that of Li [15]. For $\mathcal G$ quasi--split over $\mathbb Q$, …
Let $λ_ϕ(n)$ be the Fourier coefficients of a Hecke holomorphic or Hecke--Maass cusp form on ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$, and $f$ be any multiplicative function that satisfies two mild hypotheses. We establish a non-trivial upper bound for the correlation $\sum_{n \leq X}f(n)λ_ϕ(n+h)$ uniformly in $0<|h|\ll X$. As applications, we consider some special cases, including $λ_π(n), \,μ(n)λ_π(n)$ and any divisor-bounded multiplicative function. Here $λ_π(n)$ denotes the $n$-th Dirichlet coefficient of $\text{GL}_m$ automorphic $L$-function $L(s,π)$ for an automorphic irreducible cuspidal representation…
We show that the multiple divisor functions of integers in invertible residue classes modulo a prime number, as well as the Fourier coefficients of GL(N) Maass cusp forms for all N larger than 2, satisfy a central limit theorem in a suitable range, generalizing the case N=2 treated by E. Fouvry, S. Ganguly, E. Kowalski and P. Michel. Such universal Gaussian behaviour relies on a deep equidistribution result of products of hyper-Kloosterman sums.
We study the question of Eulerianity (factorizability) for Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms, and we prove a general transfer theorem that allows one to deduce the Eulerianity of certain coefficients from that of another coefficient. We also establish a `hidden' invariance property of Fourier coefficients. We apply these results to minimal and next-to-minimal automorphic representations, and deduce Eulerianity for a large class of Fourier and Fourier-Jacobi coefficients. In particular, we prove Eulerianity for parabolic Fourier coefficients with characters of maximal rank for a class o…
The thesis gave a fine study on the distribution of the coefficients of automorphic L-functions for GL(m) with m>1. In particular we have treated two types of problems: change of signs of these coefficients (when they are real) and their decompensation on the prime numbers. Chapter 2 is devoted to the results known concerning the first problem in the case of classical modular forms and to explain our motivation of research. In Chapter 3, we treated the case of primitive Maass forms and obtained an estimate of the subconvexity-type for the least integer n such that the n-th coefficient is negat…
Given a cuspidal automorphic form $π$ on $\GL_2$, we study smoothed sums of the form $\sum_{n\in\mathbb{N}} a_π(n^2+d)W(\frac{n}{Y})$. The error term we get is sharp in that it is uniform in both $d$ and $Y$ and depends directly on bounds towards Ramanujan for forms of half-integral weight and Selberg eigenvalue conjecture. Moreover, we identify (at least in the case where the level is square-free) the main term as a simple factor times the residue as $s=1$ of the symmetric square L-function $L(s,\Msym^2π)$. In particular there is no main term unless $d>0$ and $π$ is a dihedral form.
In this work we provide a meromorphic continuation in three complex variables of two types of triple shifted convolution sums of Fourier coefficients of holomorphic cusp forms. The foundations of this construction are based in the continuation of the spectral expansion of a special truncated Poincaré series recently developed by Jeffrey Hoffstein. As a result we are able to produce previously unstudied and nontrivial asymptotics of truncated shifted sums which we expect to correspond to off-diagonal terms in the third moment of automorphic L-functions.
Fourier coefficients of automorphic representations $π$ of $\Sp_{2n}(\BA)$ are attached to unipotent adjoint orbits in $\Sp_{2n}(F)$, where $F$ is a number field and $\BA$ is the ring of adeles of $F$. We prove that for a given $π$, all maximal unipotent orbits, which gives nonzero Fourier coefficients of $π$ are special, and prove, under a well acceptable assumption, that if $π$ is cuspidal, then the stabilizer attached to each of those maximal unipotent orbits is $F$-anisotropic as algebraic group over $F$. These results strengthen, refine and extend the earlier work of Ginzburg, Rallis and …
The zeros and poles of standard automorphic $L$-functions attached to representations of classical groups are linked to the nonvanishing of lifts in the theory of the theta correspondence. The results of this paper show that when a cuspidal representation $σ$ of a symplectic group $G$ lifts to a cuspidal representation $π= θ_ψ(σ)$ of an orthogonal group $H$ attached to a quadratic space $V$ of dimension $m$, the Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms in $σ$ are linked to periods of automorphic forms in $π$. Consequently, when our results are combined with the Rallis inner product formula in…
In this paper we analyze Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms on a finite cover $G$ of an adelic split simply-laced group. Let $π$ be a minimal or next-to-minimal automorphic representation of $G$. We prove that any $η\in π$ is completely determined by its Whittaker coefficients with respect to (possibly degenerate) characters of the unipotent radical of a fixed Borel subgroup, analogously to the Piatetski-Shapiro--Shalika formula for cusp forms on $GL_n$. We also derive explicit formulas expressing the form, as well as all its maximal parabolic Fourier coefficient in terms of these Whitt…
Let $S_2^*(q)$ be the set of primitive Hecke eigenforms of weight 2 and prime level $q$. For $p$ prime and $t\in \mathbb{R}$, we prove asymptotic formulas for the sums $$ \mathcal {A}(p^j,q,t)=\sum_{f\in S_2^*(q)} L\left(\frac{1}{2}+it,f\right)^2λ_f(p^j),\qquad j=1,2, $$ where $λ_f(p^j)$ is the $p^j$-th normalized Fourier coefficient of $f$ and $L(s,f)$ is the $L$-function associated to $f$.
We consider a general class of Fourier coefficients for an automorphic form on a finite cover of a reductive adelic group ${\bf G}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{K}})$, associated to the data of a `Whittaker pair'. We describe a quasi-order on Fourier coefficients, and an algorithm that gives an explicit formula for any coefficient in terms of integrals and sums involving higher coefficients. The maximal elements for the quasi-order are `Levi-distinguished' Fourier coefficients, which correspond to taking the constant term along the unipotent radical of a parabolic subgroup, and then further taking a Fou…
We study Fourier coefficients of $GL_n(\A)$-automorphic functions $ϕ$, for $\A$ being the adele group of a number field $\kkk$. Let FC be an abbreviation for such a Fourier coefficient (and FCs for plural). Roughly speaking, in the present paper we process FCs by iteratively using the operations: Fourier expansions, certain exchanges of Fourier expansions, and conjugations. In Theorem 3.1 we express any FC in terms of---degenerate in many cases---Whittaker FCs. For FCs obtained from the trivial FC by choosing a certain "generic" term in each Fourier expansion involved, we establish a shortcut …
If C is a smooth projective curve over a number field k, then, under fair hypotheses, its L-function admits meromorphic continuation and satisfies the anticipated functional equation if and only if a related function is X-mean-periodic for some appropriate functional space X. Building on the work of Masatoshi Suzuki for modular elliptic curves, we will explore the dual relationship of this result to the widely believed conjecture that such L-functions should be automorphic. More precisely, we will directly show the orthogonality of the matrix coefficients of GL_{2g}-automorphic representations…
Michael HARRIS defined the arithmetic automorphic periods for certain cuspidal representations of $GL_{n}$ over quadratic imaginary fields in his Crelle paper 1997. He also showed that critical values of automorphic L-functions for $GL_{n}\times GL_{1}$ can be interpreted in terms of these arithmetic automorphic periods. In the thesis, we generalize his results in two ways. Firstly, the arithmetic automorphic periods have been defined over general CM fields. We also prove that these periods factorize as products of local periods over infinity places. Secondly, we show that critical values of a…
Let q be an integral quadratic form of signature (2,m+2). We will show that the Siegel theta functions attached to q satisfies certain symmetries. As an application, we prove the symmetries for automorphic forms on the orthogonal group of q closely related to Heegener divisors (Borcherds lifts and automorphic Green functions).
We consider the Fourier expansions of automorphic forms on general Lie groups, with a particular emphasis on exceptional groups. After describing some principles underlying known results on GL(n), Sp(4), and G_2, we perform an analysis of the expansions on split real forms of E_6 and E_7 where simplifications take place for automorphic realizations of real representations which have small Gelfand-Kirillov dimension. Though the character varieties are more complicated for exceptional groups, we explain how the nonvanishing Fourier coefficients for small representations behave analogously to Fou…
Marvin Knopp developed the theory of automorphic integrals, which generalize automorphic forms; each automorphic integral has an additional period function in its automorphic relation. The period functions satisfy relations that arise from the underlying group relations. Knopp showed that entire automorphic integrals with rational period functions satisfy a Hecke correspondence theorem, provided the rational period functions have poles only at 0 or infinity. For other automorphic integrals each corresponding Dirichlet series has a functional equation with a remainder term that arises from the …
We investigate Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms on split simply-laced Lie groups G. We show that for automorphic representations of small Gelfand-Kirillov dimension the Fourier coefficients are completely determined by certain degenerate Whittaker vectors on G. Although we expect our results to hold for arbitrary simply-laced groups, we give complete proofs only for G=SL(3) and G=SL(4). This is based on a method of Ginzburg that associates Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms with nilpotent orbits of G. Our results complement and extend recent results of Miller and Sahi. We also …
We prove that the complete $L$-function associated to any cuspidal automorphic representation of $GL_2(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb Q})$ has infinitely many simple zeros.
In this paper, we study the value-distributions of $L$-functions of holomorphic primitive cusp forms in the level aspect. We associate such automorphic $L$-functions with probabilistic models called the random Euler products. First, we prove the existence of probability density functions attached to the random Euler products. Then various mean values of automorphic $L$-functions are expressed as integrals involving the density functions. Moreover, we estimate the discrepancies between the distributions of values of automorphic $L$-functions and those of the random Euler products.
We derive a Voronoi-type series approximation for the local weighted mean of an arithmetical function that is associated to Dirichlet series satisfying a functional equation with gamma factors. The series is exploited to study the oscillation frequency with a method of Heath-Brown and Tsang [7]. A by-product is another proof for the well-known result of no element in the Selberg class of degree 0 \textless{} d \textless{} 1. Our major applications include the sign-change problem of the coefficients of automorphic L-functions for GL m , which improves significantly some results of Liu and Wu [1…
In this paper we prove a version of Deligne's conjecture for potentially automorphic motives, twisted by certain algebraic Hecke characters. The Hecke characters are chosen in such a way that we can use automorphic methods in the context of totally definite unitary groups.
In the theory of automorphic descents developed by Ginzburg, Rallis and Soudry in [GRS11], the structure of Fourier coefficients of the residual representations of certain special Eisenstein series plays important roles. Started from [JLZ13], the authors are looking for more general residual representations, which may yield more general theory of automorphic descents. In this paper, we investigate the structure of Fourier coefficients of certain residual representations of symplectic groups, corresponding to certain interesting families of global Arthur parameters. On one hand, the results par…
In this paper, we consider the $L$-functions $L(s, f)$ where $f$ is an eigenform for the congruence subgroup $Γ_1(q)$. We prove an asymptotic formula for the sixth moment of this family of automorphic $L$-functions.
In this paper, we give an asymptotic formula for the second moment of Dirichlet twists of an automorphic $L$-function $L(s, π)$ on the critical line averaged over characters and conductors, where $π$ denotes an irreducible tempered cuspidal automorphic representation of $\textrm{GL}_{4}$ with unitary central character. We give some hybrid bound for the error term with respect to the size of conductors of Dirichlet characters and that of the automorphic representation.
In this paper, a construction to imitate the Bernstein-Zelevinsky derivative for automorphic representations on $GL_n(\mathbb{A})$ is introduced. We will later consider the induced representation \[I(τ_1,τ_2;\underline{s}) = \mathrm{Ind}_{P_{[n_1,n_2]}}^{G_n}(Δ(τ_1,n_1)|\cdot|^{s_1}\boxtimes Δ(τ_2,n_2)|\cdot|^{s_2}).\] from the discrete spectrum representations of $GL_n(\mathbb{A})$, and apply our method to study the degenerate Whittaker coefficients of the Eisenstein series constructed from such a representation as well as of its residues. This method can be used to reprove the results on the…
We improve the error term in the asymptotic formula for the twisted fourth moment of automorphic L functions of prime level and weight two proved by Kowalski, Michel and Vanderkam. As a consequence, we obtain a new subconvexity bound in the level aspect and improve the lower bound on proportion of simultaneous non-vanishing.
Let $\mathbb{A}$ be the adele ring of a totally real algebraic number field $F$. We push forward an explicit computation of a relative trace formula for periods of automorphic forms along a split torus in $GL(2)$ from a square free level case done by Masao Tsuzuki, to an arbitrary level case. By using a relative trace formula, we study central values of automorphic $L$-functions for cuspidal automorphic representations of $GL(2, \mathbb{A})$ corresponding to Maass forms with arbitrary level.
For triangle groups, the (quasi-)automorphic forms are known just as explicitly as for the modular group SL$(2,\bbZ)$. We collect these expressions here, and then interpret them using the Halphen differential equation. We study the arithmetic properties of their Fourier coefficients at cusps and Taylor coefficients at elliptic fixed-points --- in both cases integrality is related to the arithmeticity of the triangle group. As an application of our formulas, we provide an explicit modular interpretation of periods of 14 families of Calabi-Yau threefolds over the thrice-punctured sphere.
From a spectral identity we obtain asymptotics with error term for the second integral moments of families of automorphic L-functions for GL(2) over an arbitrary number field according to twists by idele characters with arbitrary ramification at a fixed finite place. The power-saving in the error term breaks convexity at this non-archimedean place.
This article is a research exposition based on the author's talk at the International Colloquium on Automorphic Representations and L-Functions, 2012, held at TIFR, Mumbai. We consider some special cases of the following question: when is a natural subset of the Fourier coefficients sufficient to uniquely determine a "modular form"? Two kinds of modular forms are considered in this article: a) classical modular forms of half-integral weight, and b) Siegel modular forms of genus 2 and integral weight. These two apparently different scenarios turn out to be closely related. Our results were moti…
We propose a relationship between the cohomology of arithmetic groups, and the motivic cohomology of certain (Langlands-)attached motives. The motivic cohomology group in question is that related, by Beilinson's conjecture, to the adjoint $L$-function at $s=1$. We present evidence for the conjecture using the theory of periods of automorphic forms, and using analytic torsion.
We define two-parameter generalizations of Andrews' $(k+1)$-marked odd Durfee symbols and $2k$th symmetrized odd rank moments, and study the automorphic properties of some of their generating functions. When $k=0$ we obtain families of modular forms and mock modular forms. When $k \geq 1$, we find quasimodular forms and quasimock modular forms.
We prove the asymptotic formula for the fourth moment of automorphic $L$-functions of level $p^ν$, where $p$ is a fixed prime number and $ν\rightarrow \infty$. This paper is a continuation of work by Rouymi, who computed asymptotics of the first three moments at prime power level, and a generalization of results obtained for prime level by Duke, Friedlander & Iwaniec and Kowalski, Michel & Vanderkam.
We prove Deligne's conjecture for central critical values of certain automorphic $L$-functions for ${\rm GL}(3)\times {\rm GL}(2)$. The proof is base on rationality results for central critical values of triple product $L$-functions, which follow from establishing explicit Ichino's formulae for trilinear period integrals for Hilbert cusp forms on totally real etale cubic algebras over $\mathbb{Q}$.
Let G be a connected, real, semisimple Lie group contained in its complexification G_C, and let K be a maximal compact subgroup of G. We construct a K_C-G double coset domain in G_C, and we show that the action of G on the K-finite vectors of any irreducible unitary representation of G has a holomorphic extension to this domain. For the resultant holomorphic extension of K-finite matrix coefficients we obtain estimates of the singularities at the boundary, as well as majorant/minorant estimates along the boundary. We obtain L^\infty bounds on holomorphically extended automorphic functions on G…
We provide Fourier expansions of vector-valued eigenfunctions of the hyperbolic Laplacian that are twist-periodic in a horocycle direction. The twist may be given by any endomorphism of a finite-dimensional vector space; no assumptions on invertibility or unitarity are made. Examples of such eigenfunctions include vector-valued twisted automorphic forms of Fuchsian groups. We further provide a detailed description of the Fourier coefficients and explicitly identify each of their constituents, which intimately depend on the eigenvalues of the twisting endomorphism and the size of its Jordan blo…
