We consider the asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials for measures that are differentiable, but not necessarily analytic, multiplicative perturbations of Jacobi-like measures supported on disjoint intervals. We analyze the Fokas-Its-Kitaev Riemann-Hilbert problem using the Deift-Zhou method of nonlinear steepest descent and its $\overline{\partial}$ extension due to Miller and McLaughlin. Our results extend that of Yattselev in the case of Chebyshev-like measures with error bounds that give similar rates while allowing less regular perturbations. For the general Jacobi-like case, we present, what appears to be the first result for asymptotics when the perturbation of the measure is only assumed to be differentiable with bounded second derivative.
We consider polynomials $p_n^ω(x)$ that are orthogonal with respect to the oscillatory weight $w(x)=e^{iωx}$ on $[-1,1]$, where $ω>0$ is a real parameter. A first analysis of $p_n^ω(x)$ for large values of $ω$ was carried out in connection with complex Gaussian quadrature rules with uniform good properties in $ω$. In this contribution we study the existence, asymptotic behavior and asymptotic distribution of the roots of $p_n^ω(x)$ in the complex plane as $n\to\infty$. The parameter $ω$ grows with $n$ linearly. The tools used are logarithmic potential theory and the $S$-property, together with…
First a formula for the number of zeros of the orthogonal polynomial in the intervals is presented. Then a criteria about the appearance of a zero in a gap is given. Finally a necessary and sufficient condition is derived such that the zeros of the orthogonal polynomials have given accumulation points in the gaps. As a consequence it follows that every point from the gaps is an accumulation point of the zeros of the orthogonal polynomials, if the harmonic measures of the intervals are linearly independent over the rationals. If the harmonic measures are rational then there is a finite number o…
The polynomials $p_n$ orthogonal on the interval $[-1,1],$ normalized by $p_n(1)=1,$ satisfy Turán's inequality if $p_n^2(x)-p_{n-1}(x)p_{n+1}(x)\ge 0$ for $n\ge 1$ and for all $x$ in the interval of orthogonality. We give a general criterion for orthogonal polynomials to satisfy Turán's inequality. This extends essentially the results of \cite{szw}. In particular the results can be applied to many classes of orthogonal polynomials, by inspecting their recurrence relation.
Mehler-Heine asymptotics describe the behavior of orthogonal polynomials near the edges of the interval where the orthogonality measure is supported. For Jacobi polynomials and Laguerre polynomials this asymptotic behavior near the hard edge involves Bessel functions $J_α$. We show that the asymptotic behavior near the endpoint of the interval of (one of) the measures for multiple orthogonal polynomials involves a generalization of the Bessel function. The multiple orthogonal polynomials considered are Jacobi-Angelesco polynomials, Jacobi-Piñeiro polynomials, multiple Laguerre polynomials, mul…
We give the strong asymptotic of Cauchy biorthogonal polynomials under the assumption that the defining measures are supported on non intersecting intervals of the real line and satisfy Szegő's condition. The biorthogonal polynomials are connected with certain mixed type Hermite-Padé polynomials, which verify full orthogonality relations with respect to some varying measures. Thus, the strong asymptotic of orthogonal polynomials with respect to varying measures plays a key role in the study.
We consider polynomials that are orthogonal over an analytic Jordan curve L with respect to a positive analytic weight, and show that each such polynomial of sufficiently large degree can be expanded in a series of certain integral transforms that converges uniformly in the whole complex plane. This expansion yields, in particular and simultaneously, Szego's classical strong asymptotic formula and a new integral representation for the polynomials inside L. We further exploit such a representation to derive finer asymptotic results for weights having finitely many singularities (all of algebrai…
We provide a representation in terms of certain canonical functions for a sequence of polynomials orthogonal with respect to a weight that is strictly positive and analytic on the unit circle. These formulas yield a complete asymptotic expansion for these polynomials, valid uniformly in the whole complex plane. As a consequence, we obtain some results about the distribution of zeros of these polynomials. The main technique is the steepest descent analysis of Deift and Zhou, based on the matrix Riemann-Hilbert characterization proposed by Fokas, Its and Kitaev.
We introduce sequences of functions orthogonal on a finite interval: proper orthogonal rational functions, orthogonal exponential functions, orthogonal logarithmic functions, and transmuted orthogonal polynomials
We study a family of orthogonal polynomials which satisfy (apart from a 3-term recurrence relation) an eigenvalue equation involving a third order differential operator of Dunkl-type. The orthogonality measure of these polynomials consists in the continuous measure of the little -1 Jacobi polynomials to which is added an arbitrary mass located at the point $x=0$, the middle of the orthogonality interval. This provides the first nontrivial example of Krall-type polynomials with a point mass inside the orthogonality interval. These polynomials can be obtained by a Geronimus transform of the litt…
Let $E = \cup_{j = 1}^l [a_{2j-1},a_{2j}],$ $a_1 < a_2 < ... < a_{2l},$ $l \geq 2$ and set ${\boldmath$ω$}(\infty) =(ω_1(\infty),...,ω_{l-1}(\infty))$, where $ω_j(\infty)$ is the harmonic measure of $[a_{2 j - 1}, a_{2 j}]$ at infinity. Let $μ$ be a measure which is on $E$ absolutely continuous and satisfies Szegő's-condition and has at most a finite number of point measures outside $E$, and denote by $(P_n)$ and $({\mathcal Q}_n)$ the orthonormal polynomials and their associated Weyl solutions with respect to $dμ$, satisfying the recurrence relation $\sqrt{λ_{2 + n}} y_{1 + n} = (x - α_{1 + n…
In this paper we study the asymptotic analysis of the orthogonal trigonometric polynomials by the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the periodic analytic functions.
Strong asymptotics of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to a weight of the form $$ W(z) = w(z) \prod_{k=1}^m |z-a_k|^{2β_k}, \quad |z|=1, \quad |a_k|=1, \quad β_k>-1/2, \quad k=1, ..., m, $$ where $w(z)>0$ for $|z|=1$ and can be extended as a holomorphic and non-vanishing function to an annulus containing the unit circle. The formulas obtained are valid uniformly in the whole complex plane. As a consequence, we obtain some results about the distribution of zeros of these polynomials, the behavior of their leading and Verblunsky coefficients, as well as give an alternative …
Motivated by G. H. Hardy's 1939 results \cite{Hardy} on functions orthogonal with respect to their real zeros $λ_{n}, n=1,2,... $, we will consider, within the same general conditions imposed by Hardy, functions satisfying an orthogonality with respect to their zeros with Jacobi weights on the interval $(0,1)$, that is, the functions $f(z)=z^νF(z), ν\in \mathbb{R}$, where $F$ is entire and \begin{equation*} \int_{0}^{1}f(λ_{n}t)f(λ_{m}t)t^α(1-t)^βdt=0,\quad α>-1-2ν, β>-1, \end{equation*}% when $n\neq m$. Considering all possible functions on this class we are lead to the discovery of a new fam…
Difference calculus compatible with polynomials (i.e., such that the divided difference operator of first order applied to any polynomial must yield a polynomial of lower degree) can only be made on special lattices well known in contemporary $q-$calculus. Orthogonal polynomials satisfying difference relations on such lattices are presented. In particular, lattices which are dense on intervals ($|q|=1$) are considered.
The orthogonal polynomials $p_n$ satisfy Turán's inequality if $p_n^2(x)-p_{n-1}(x)p_{n+1}(x)\ge 0$ for $n\ge 1$ and for all $x$ in the interval of orthogonality. We give general criteria for orthogonal polynomials to satisfy Turán's inequality. This yields the known results for classical orthogonal polynomials as well as new results, for example, for the $q$--ultraspherical polynomials.
We present a new family $\left\{ S_{n}(x;q)\right\} _{n\geq 0}$ of monic polynomials in $x$, orthogonal with respect to a Sobolev-type inner product related to the $q$-Hermite I orthogonal polynomials, involving a first-order $q$-derivative on a mass-point $α\in \mathbb{R}$ located out of the corresponding orthogonality interval $[-1,1]$, for some fixed real number $q \in (0, 1)$. We present connection formulas, and the annihilation operator for this non-standard orthogonal polynomial family.
In recent years, chain sequences and their perturbations have played a significant role in characterising the orthogonal polynomials both on the real line as well as on the unit circle. In this note, a particular disturbance of the chain sequence related to orthogonal polynomials having their true interval of orthogonality as a subset of $[0,\infty)$ is studied leading to an important consequence related to the kernel polynomials. Such perturbations are shown to be related to transformations of symmetric measures. An illustration using the generalized Laguerre polynomials is also provided.
We study convexity properties of the zeros of some special functions that follow from the convexity theorem of Sturm. We prove results on the intervals of convexity for the zeros of Laguerre, Jacobi and ultraspherical polynomials, as well as functions related to them, using transformations under which the zeros remain unchanged. We give upper as well as lower bounds for the distance between consecutive zeros in several cases.
We investigate type I multiple orthogonal polynomials on $r$ intervals which have a common point at the origin and endpoints at the $r$ roots of unity $ω^j$, $j=0,1,\ldots,r-1$, with $ω= \exp(2πi/r)$. We use the weight function $|x|^β(1-x^r)^α$, with $α,β>-1$ for the multiple orthogonality relations. We give explicit formulas for the type I multiple orthogonal polynomials, the coefficients in the recurrence relation, the differential equation, and we obtain the asymptotic distribution of the zeros.
Moment evaluations are important for the study of non-classical orthogonal polynomial systems for which explicit representations are not known. In this paper we compute, in terms of the hypergeometric function, the moments associated with a generalized ultraspherical weight on a collection of intervals with two symmetric gaps. These moments, parametrized by the endpoints of the gaps, are identified as a one parameter deformation between the full range ultraspherical moments and the half range ultraspherical moments.
An inifinite-dimensional representation of the double affine Hecke algebra of rank 1 and type $(C_1^{\vee},C_1)$ in which all generators are tridiagonal is presented. This representation naturally leads to two systems of polynomials that are orthogonal on the unit circle. These polynomials can be considered as circle analogs of the Askey-Wilson polynomials. The corresponding polynomials orthogonal on an interval are constructed and discussed.
We consider polynomials that are orthogonal on $[-1,1]$ with respect to a modified Jacobi weight $(1-x)^α(1+x)^βh(x)$, with $α,β>-1$ and $h$ real analytic and stricly positive on $[-1,1]$. We obtain full asymptotic expansions for the monic and orthonormal polynomials outside the interval $[-1,1]$, for the recurrence coefficients and for the leading coefficients of the orthonormal polynomials. We also deduce asymptotic behavior for the Hankel determinants. For the asymptotic analysis we use the steepest descent technique for Riemann--Hilbert problems developed by Deift and Zhou, and applied to …
An effective method to obtain exact analytical solutions of equations describing the coherent dynamics of multilevel systems is presented. The method is based on the usage of orthogonal polynomials, integral transforms and their discrete analogues. All the obtained solutions are expressed by way of special or elementary functions.
The aim of this article is to present a time-frequency theory for orthogonal polynomials on the interval [-1,1] that runs parallel to the time-frequency analysis of bandlimited functions developed by Landau, Pollak and Slepian. For this purpose, the spectral decomposition of a particular compact time-frequency-operator is studied. This decomposition and its eigenvalues are closely related to the theory of orthogonal polynomials. Results from both theories, the theory of orthogonal polynomials and the Landau-Pollak-Slepian theory, can be used to prove localization and approximation properties o…
We introduce two explicit examples of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle. Moments and the reflection coefficients are expressed in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions. We find explicit expression for these polynomials in terms of a new type of elliptic hypergeometric function. We show that obtained polynomials are orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to a dense point meausure, i.e. the spectrum consists from infinite number points of increase which are dense on the unit circle. We construct also corresponding explicit systems of polynomials orthogonal on the interval of the real ax…
We look for differential equations satisfied by the generalized Jacobi polynomials which are orthogonal on the interval [-1,1] with respect to a weight function consisting of the classical Jacobi weight function together with point masses at the endpoints of the interval of orthogonality. In order to find explicit formulas for the coefficients of these differential equations we have to solve systems of equations involving derivatives of the classical Jacobi polynomials. We show that these systems of equations have a unique solution which is given explicitly. This is a consequence of the Jacobi…
We consider the zeros of exceptional orthogonal polynomials (XOP). Exceptional orthogonal polynomials were originally discovered as eigenfunctions of second order differential operators that exist outside the classical Bochner-Brenke classification due to the fact that XOP sequences omit polynomials of certain degrees. This omission causes several properties of the classical orthogonal polynomial sequences to not extend to the XOP sequences. One such property is the restriction of the zeros to the convex hull of the support of the measure of orthogonality. In the XOP case, the zeros that exist…
We show how localization and smoothing techniques can be used to establish universality in the bulk of the spectrum for a fixed positive measure mu on [-1,1]. Assume that mu is a regular measure, and is absolutely continuous in an open interval containing some closed subinterval J of (-1,1). Assume that in J, the absolutely continuous component mu' is positive and continuous. Then universality in J for mu follows from universality for the classical Legendre weight. We also establish universality in an L_{p} sense under weaker assumptions on mu.
M. Derevyagin, L. Vinet and A. Zhedanov introduced in Constr. Approx. 36 (2012) 513-535 a new connection between orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and the real line. It maps any real CMV matrix into a Jacobi one depending on a real parameter $λ$. These authors prove that this map yields a natural link between the Jacobi polynomials on the unit circle and the little and big $-1$ Jacobi polynomials on the real line. They also provide explicit expressions for the measure and orthogonal polynomials associated with the Jacobi matrix in terms of those related to the CMV matrix, but only for …
We look for spectral type differential equations satisfied by the generalized Jacobi polynomials which are orthogonal on the interval [-1,1] with respect to a weight function consisting of the classical Jacobi weight function together with point masses at the endpoints of the interval of orthogonality. In order to find explicit formulas for the coefficients of these differential equations we have to solve systems of equations involving derivatives of the classical Jacobi polynomials. These systems of equations have a unique solution which can be given explicitly in terms of Jacobi polynomials.…
This note supplements the work of Gomez-Ullate, Kamran and Milson on the X_(1)-Jacobi polynomials which are orthogonal in a weighted Hilbert function space on the the interval (-1,+1) of the real line. These polynomials are generated by a second-order ordinary linear differential equation with a spectral parameter. Some additional information on the Sturm-Liouville form of this equation is given in this note, together with details of the singular differential operators generated in the weighted Hilbert function space. In particular, structured boundary conditions are given to determine the spe…
We show how to obtain linear combinations of polynomials in an orthogonal sequence $\{P_n\}_{n\geq 0}$, such as $Q_{n,k}(x)=\sum\limits_{i=0}^k a_{n,i}P_{n-i}(x)$, $a_{n,0}a_{n,k}\neq0$, that characterize quasi-orthogonal polynomials of order $k\le n-1$. The polynomials in the sequence $\{Q_{n,k}\}_{n\geq 0}$ are obtained from $P_{n}$, by making use of parameter shifts. We use an algorithmic approach to find these linear combinations for each family applicable and these equations are used to prove quasi-orthogonality of order $k$. We also determine the location of the extreme zeros of the quas…
We look for spectral type differential equations satisfied by the generalized Jacobi polynomials, which are orthogonal on the interval [-1,1] with respect to a weight function consisting of the classical Jacobi weight function together with two point masses at the endpoints of the interval of orthogonality. We show that such a differential equation is uniquely determined and we give explicit representations for the coefficients. In case of nonzero mass points the order of this differential equation is infinite, except for nonnegative integer values of (one of) the parameters. Otherwise, the fi…
Generalized Jacobi polynomials are orthogonal polynomials related to a weight function which is smooth and positive on the whole interval of orthogonality up to a finite number of points, where algebraic singularities occur. The influence of these singular points on the asymptotic behaviour of the recurrence coefficients is investigated.
We study the moment space corresponding to matrix measures on the unit circle. Moment points are characterized by non-negative definiteness of block Toeplitz matrices. This characterization is used to derive an explicit representation of orthogonal polynomials with respect to matrix measures on the unit circle and to present a geometric definition of canonical moments. It is demonstrated that these geometrically defined quantities coincide with the Verblunsky coefficients, which appear in the Szegö recursions for the matrix orthogonal polynomials. Finally, we provide an alternative proof of th…
Let $(P_N)_{N\ge0}$ one of the classical sequences of orthogonal polynomials, i.e., Hermite, Laguerre or Jacobi polynomials. For the roots $z_{1,N},\ldots, z_{N,N}$ of $P_N$ we derive lower estimates for $\min_{i\ne j}|z_{i,N}-z_{j,N}|$ and the distances from the boundary of the orthogonality intervals. The proofs are based on recent results on the eigenvalues of the covariance matrices in central limit theorems for associated $β$-random matrix ensembles where these entities appear as entries, and where the eigenvalues of these matrices are known.
In this contribution we consider sequences of monic polynomials orthogonal with respect to a Sobolev-type inner product \[ \langle f,g \rangle _{S}:= \langle {\bf u}, f g\rangle +N (\mathscr D_q f)(α) (\mathscr D _{q}g)(α),\qquad α\in \mathbb R, \quad N\ge 0, \] where $\bf u$ is a $q$-classical linear functional and $\mathscr D _{q}$ is the $q$-derivative operator. We obtain some algebraic properties of these polynomials such as an explicit representation, a five-term recurrence relation as well as a second order linear $q$-difference holonomic equation fulfilled by such polynomials. We presen…
Let $K$ be a non-polar compact subset of $\mathbb{R}$ and $μ_K$ denote the equilibrium measure of $K$. Furthermore, let $P_n\left(\cdot, μ_K\right)$ be the $n$-th monic orthogonal polynomial for $μ_K$. It is shown that $\|P_n\left(\cdot, μ_K\right)\|_{L^2(μ_K)}$, the Hilbert norm of $P_n\left(\cdot, μ_K\right)$ in $L^2(μ_K)$, is bounded below by $\mathrm{Cap}(K)^n$ for each $n\in\mathbb{N}$. A sufficient condition is given for $\displaystyle\left(\|P_n\left(\cdot;μ_K\right)\|_{L^2(μ_K)}/\mathrm{Cap}(K)^n\right)_{n=1}^\infty$ to be unbounded. More detailed results are presented for sets which a…
We investigate the type I and type II multiple orthogonal polynomials on an $r$-star with weight function $|x|^βe^{-x^r}$, with $β>-1$. Each measure $μ_j$, for $1\leq j \leq r$, is supported on the semi-infinite interval $[0,ω^{j-1}\infty)$ with $ω=e^{2πi/r}$. For both the type I and the type II polynomials we give explicit expressions, the coefficients in the recurrence relation, the differential equation and we obtain the asymptotic zero distribution of the polynomials on the diagonal. Also, we give the connection between the Laguerre-Angelesco polynomials and the Jacobi-Angelesco polynomial…
Studying the isotropy orbits of compact symmetric spaces Reiswich introduced a family of explicit polynomials in one variable in order to describe the unique minimal isotropy orbit of compact symmetric spaces with Dynkin diagram of type $D_m$. Based on this geometric interpretation he conjectured that these polynomials all have pairwise different real roots in the interval $[\,0,1\,]$. In this article the polynomials constructed by Reiswich will be identified as special cases of Jacobi polynomials thus proving the conjecture about minimal isotropy orbits of compact symmetric spaces with Dynkin…
As is well known the kernel of the orthogonal projector onto the polynomials of degree $n$ in $L^2(w_{\a,\b}, [-1, 1])$ with $w_{\a,\b}(t) = (1-t)^\a(1+t)^\b$ can be written in terms of Jacobi polynomials. It is shown that if the coefficients in this kernel are smoothed out by sampling a $C^\infty$ function then the resulting function has almost exponential (faster than any polynomial) rate of decay away from the main diagonal. This result is used for the construction of tight polynomial frames for $L^2(w_{\a,\b})$ with elements having almost exponential localization.
A long-standing open problem in harmonic analysis is: given a non-negative measure $μ$ on $\mathbb R$, find the infimal width of frequencies needed to approximate any function in $L^2(μ)$. We consider this problem in the "perturbative regime", and characterize asymptotic smallness of perturbations of measures which do not change that infimal width. Then we apply this result to show that there are no local restrictions on the structure of orthogonal spectral measures of one-dimensional Schrodinger operators on a finite interval. This answers a question raised by V.A.Marchenko.
In this manuscript we study algebraic and analytic properties of the sequence of monic polynomials orthogonal with respect to a Jacobi differential operator. A fluid dynamics model for source points location of a flow of an incompressible fluid with preassigned stagnation points is also considered.
In this paper we give the asymptotic behavior of type I multiple orthogonal polynomials for a Nikishin system of order two with two disjoint intervals. We use the Riemann-Hilbert problem for multiple orthogonal polynomials and the steepest descent analysis for oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problems to obtain the asymptotic behavior in all relevant regions of the complex plane.
In this contribution we consider the sequence $\{Q_{n}^λ\}_{n\geq 0} $ of monic polynomials orthogonal with respect to the following inner product involving differences \begin{equation*} \langle p,q\rangle _λ=\int_{0}^{\infty}p\left(x\right) q\left(x\right) dψ^{(a)}(x)+λ\,Δp(c)Δq(c), \end{equation*} where $λ\in \mathbb{R}_{+}$, $Δ$ denotes the forward difference operator defined by $Δf\left(x\right) =f\left(x+1\right) -f\left(x\right) $, $ψ^{(a)}$ with $a>0$ is the well known Poisson distribution of probability theory% \begin{equation*} dψ^{(a)}(x)=\frac{e^{-a}a^{x}}{x!}\quad \text{at}x=0,1,2,…
We find all spectral type differential equations satisfied by the symmetric generalized ultraspherical polynomials which are orthogonal on the interval [-1,1] with respect to the classical symmetric weight function for the Jacobi polynomials together with equal mass points at both ends of the interval of orthogonality. In order to find explicit formulas for the coefficients of these differential equations we have to solve systems of equations involving derivatives of the classical Jacobi polynomials. These systems of equations have a unique solution which is given explicitly. This is a consequ…
We study semi-infinite Jacobi matrices $H=H_{0}+V$ corresponding to trace class perturbations $V$ of the "free" discrete Schrödinger operator $H_{0}$. Our goal is to construct various spectral quantities of the operator $H$, such as the weight function, eigenfunctions of its continuous spectrum, the wave operators for the pair $H_{0}$, $H$, the scattering matrix, the spectral shift function, etc. This allows us to find the asymptotic behavior of the orthonormal polynomials $P_{n}(z)$ associated to the Jacobi matrix $H $ as $n\to\infty$. In particular, we consider the case of $z$ inside the spe…
In this paper, we present a new method via the transfer matrix approach to obtain asymptotic formulae of orthogonal polynomials with asymptotically identical coefficients of bounded variation. We make use of the hyperbolicity of the recurrence matrices and employ Kooman's Theorem to diagonalize them simultaneously. The method introduced in this paper allows one to consider products of matrices such that entries of consecutive matrices are of bounded variation. Finally, we apply the asymptotic formulae obtained to solve the point mass problem on the real line when the measure is essentially sup…
