We provide a representation in terms of certain canonical functions for a sequence of polynomials orthogonal with respect to a weight that is strictly positive and analytic on the unit circle. These formulas yield a complete asymptotic expansion for these polynomials, valid uniformly in the whole complex plane. As a consequence, we obtain some results about the distribution of zeros of these polynomials. The main technique is the steepest descent analysis of Deift and Zhou, based on the matrix Riemann-Hilbert characterization proposed by Fokas, Its and Kitaev.
Let p(t) be a trigonometric polynomial, non-negative on the unit circle. We say that a measure σbelongs to a polynomial Szego class, if the logarithm of its density is summable over the circle with the weight p(t). For the associated orthogonal polynomials, we obtain pointwise asymptotics inside the unit disc. Then, we show that these asymptotics holds in L^2-sense on the unit circle. As a corollary, we get an existence of certain modified wave operators.
The orthogonality properties of certain subspaces associated with bivariate Bernstein-Szegő measures are considered. It is shown that these spaces satisfy more orthogonality relations than expected from the relations that define them. The results are used to prove a Christoffel-Darboux like formula for these measures.
By using the Szegő's transformation we deduce new relations between the recurrence coefficients for orthogonal polynomials on the real line and the Verblunsky parameters of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. Moreover, we study the relation between the corresponding $\mathcal{S}$-functions and $\mathcal{C}$-functions
In this work, some theorems are established for orthogonal trigonometric polynomials (OTP) including Favard, Baxter, Geronimus, Rakhmanov, Szegö and the strong Szegö theorems which are important in the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle (OPUC). All these results are based on the mutual representation theorem of OPUC and OTP which deduced by a Riemann-Hilbert problem simultaneously characterizing them. In addition, Szegö recursions, four-term recurrences and some new identities for OPUC and OTP are also obtained by using their Riemann-Hilbert characterizations respectively.
We extend some classical theorems in the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle to the matrix case. In particular, we prove a matrix analogue of Szegő's theorem. As a by-product, we also obtain an elementary proof of the distance formula by Helson and Lowdenslager.
We consider canonical systems and investigate the Szegő class, which is defined via the finiteness of the associated entropy functional. Noting that the canonical system may be studied in a variety of gauges, we choose to work in the Arov gauge, in which we prove that the entropy integral is equal to an integral involving the coefficients of the canonical system. This sum rule provides a spectral theory gem in the sense proposed by Barry Simon.
Let p be a trigonometric polynomial, nonnegative on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$. We say that a measure $σ$ on $\mathbb{T}$ belongs to the polynomial Szego class, if $dσ=sigma'_{ac}dθ+dσ_s$, $σ_s$ is singular, and $p\ln σ'_{ac}$ is summable on $\mathbb{T}$. For the associated orthogonal polynomials, we obtain pointwise asymptotics inside the unit disc. Then, we show that this asymptotics holds in the $L^2$ sense on the unit circle. As a corollary, we get existense of certain modified wave operators.
We find the raising and lowering operators for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle introduced by Szegő and for their four parameter generalization to ${}_4ϕ_3$ biorthogonal rational functions on the unit circle.
We continue studying polynomials generated by the Szegő recursion when a finite number of Verblunsky coefficients lie outside the closed unit disk. We prove some asymptotic results for the corresponding orthogonal polynomials and then translate them to the real line to obtain the Szegő asymptotics for the resulting polynomials. The latter polynomials give rise to a non-symmetric tridiagonal matrix but it is a finite-rank perturbation of a symmetric Jacobi matrix.
For the polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to the measure from the Szego class we prove that the polynomial entropy integrals can grow. The estimate obtained is sharp.
We give an asymptotic upper bound as $n\to\infty$ for the entropy integral $$E_n(w)= -\int p_n^2(x)\log (p_n^2(x))w(x)dx,$$ where $p_n$ is the $n$th degree orthonormal polynomial with respect to a weight $w(x)$ on $[-1,1]$ which belongs to the Szegő class. We also study two functionals closely related to the entropy integral. First, their asymptotic behavior is completely described for weights $w$ in the Bernstein class. Then, as for the entropy, we obtain asymptotic upper bounds for these two functionals when $w(x)$ belongs to the Szegő class. In each case, we give conditions for these upper …
This is an expanded version of the talk given at the conference ``Constructive Functions Tech-04''. We survey some recent results on canonical representation and asymptotic behavior of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to an analytic weight. These results are obtained using the steepest descent method based on the Riemann-Hilbert characterization of these polynomials.
We study semi-infinite Jacobi matrices $H=H_{0}+V$ corresponding to trace class perturbations $V$ of the "free" discrete Schrödinger operator $H_{0}$. Our goal is to construct various spectral quantities of the operator $H$, such as the weight function, eigenfunctions of its continuous spectrum, the wave operators for the pair $H_{0}$, $H$, the scattering matrix, the spectral shift function, etc. This allows us to find the asymptotic behavior of the orthonormal polynomials $P_{n}(z)$ associated to the Jacobi matrix $H $ as $n\to\infty$. In particular, we consider the case of $z$ inside the spe…
The one variable Bernstein-Szego theory for orthogonal polynomials on the real line is extended to a class of two variable measures. The polynomials orthonormal in the total degree ordering and the lexicographical ordering are constructed and their recurrence coefficients discussed.
We study algebraic curves that are envelopes of families of polygons supported on the unit circle T. We address, in particular, a characterization of such curves of minimal class and show that all realizations of these curves are essentially equivalent and can be described in terms of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle (OPUC), also known as Szegő polynomials. Our results have connections to classical results from algebraic and projective geometry, such as theorems of Poncelet, Darboux, and Kippenhahn; numerical ranges of a class of matrices; and Blaschke products and disk functions. Thi…
We introduce the Szegö class, Sz(E), for an arbitrary Parreau-Widom set E in R and study the dynamics of its elements under the left shift. When the direct Cauchy theorem holds on C\E, we show that to each J in Sz(E) there is a unique element J' in the isospectral torus, T_E, so that the left-shifts of J are asymptotic to the orbit {J'_m} on T_E. Moreover, we show that the ratio of the associated orthogonal polynomials has a limit, expressible in terms of Jost functions, as the degree n tends to infinity. This enables us to describe the large n behaviour of the orthogonal polynomials for every…
We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a Jacobi matrix to produce orthogonal polynomials with Szegő asymptotics off the real axis. A key idea is to prove the equivalence of Szegő asymptotics and of Jost asymptotics for the Jost solution. We also prove $L^2$ convergence of Szegő asymptotics on the spectrum.
Szego's procedure to connect orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and orthogonal polynomials on [-1,1] is generalized to nonsymmetric measures. It generates the so-called semi-orthogonal functions on the linear space of Laurent polynomials L, and leads to a new orthogonality structure in the module LxL. This structure can be interpreted in terms of a 2x2 matrix measure on [-1,1], and semi-orthogonal functions provide the corresponding sequence of orthogonal matrix polynomials. This gives a connection between orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and certain classes of matrix orthogona…
We present a new viewpoint (namely, reproducing kernels) and new proofs for several recent results of J. Geronimo and H. Woerdeman on orthogonal polynomials on the two dimenional torus (and related subjects). In addition, we show how their results give a new proof of Ando's inequality via an equivalent version proven by Cole and Wermer. A simple necessary and sufficient condition for two variable polynomial stability is also given.
In this paper, we generalize Szego's theorem for orthogonal polynomials on the real line to infinite gap sets of Parreau-Widom type. This notion includes Cantor sets of positive measure. The Szego condition involves the equilibrium measure which is shown to be absolutely continuous. Our approach builds on a canonical factorization of the M-function and the covering space formalism of Sodin-Yuditskii.
We give the strong asymptotic of Cauchy biorthogonal polynomials under the assumption that the defining measures are supported on non intersecting intervals of the real line and satisfy Szegő's condition. The biorthogonal polynomials are connected with certain mixed type Hermite-Padé polynomials, which verify full orthogonality relations with respect to some varying measures. Thus, the strong asymptotic of orthogonal polynomials with respect to varying measures plays a key role in the study.
Let $μ$ be a non-trivial probability measure on the unit circle $\partial\bbD$, $w$ the density of its absolutely continuous part, $α_n$ its Verblunsky coefficients, and $Φ_n$ its monic orthogonal polynomials. In this paper we compute the coefficients of $Φ_n$ in terms of the $α_n$. If the function $\log w$ is in $L^1(dθ)$, we do the same for its Fourier coefficients. As an application we prove that if $α_n \in \ell^4$ and $Q(z) = \sum_{m=0}^N q_m z^m$ is a polynomial, then with $\bar Q(z) = \sum_{m=0}^N \bar q_m z^m$ and $S$ the left shift operator on sequences we have $|Q(e^{iθ})|^2 \log w(θ…
Using the minimal parameter sequence of a given chain sequence, we introduce the concept of complementary chain sequences, which we view as perturbations of chain sequences. Using the relation between these complementary chain sequences and the corresponding Verblunsky coefficients, the para-orthogonal polynomials and the associated Szegö polynomials are analyzed. Two illustrations, one involving Gaussian hypergeometric functions and the other involving Carathéodory functions are also provided. A connection between these two illustrations by means of complementary chain sequences is also obser…
Classical Schur analysis is intimately connected to the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the circle [Simon, 2005]. We investigate here the connection between multipoint Schur analysis and orthogonal rational functions. Specifically, we study the convergence of the Wall rational functions via the development of a rational analogue to the Szeg\H o theory, in the case where the interpolation points may accumulate on the unit circle. This leads us to generalize results from [Khrushchev,2001], [Bultheel et al., 1999], and yields asymptotics of a novel type.
Rakhmanov's theorem for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle gives a sufficient condition on the orthogonality measure for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle, in order that the reflection coefficients (the recurrence coefficients in the Szego recurrence relation) converge to zero. In this paper we give the analog for orthogonal matrix polynomials on the unit circle.

We consider polynomials that are orthogonal over an analytic Jordan curve L with respect to a positive analytic weight, and show that each such polynomial of sufficiently large degree can be expanded in a series of certain integral transforms that converges uniformly in the whole complex plane. This expansion yields, in particular and simultaneously, Szego's classical strong asymptotic formula and a new integral representation for the polynomials inside L. We further exploit such a representation to derive finer asymptotic results for weights having finitely many singularities (all of algebrai…
The zeros of semi-orthogonal functions with respect to a probability measure mu supported on the unit circle can be applied to obtain Szego quadrature formulas. The discrete measures generated by these formulas weakly converge to the orthogonality measure mu. In this paper we construct families of semi-orthogonal functions with interlacing zeros, and give a representation of the support of mu in terms of the asymptotic distribution of such zeros.
We study the asymptotic behavior, as $n\to\infty$, of ratios of Toeplitz determinants $D_n(e^h dμ)/D_n(dμ)$ defined by a measure $μ$ on the unit circle and a sufficiently smooth function $h$. The approach we follow is based on the theory of orthogonal polynomials. We prove that the second order asymptotics depends on $h$ and only a few Verblunsky coefficients associated to $μ$. As a result, we establish a relative version of the Strong Szegő Limit Theorem for a wide class of measures $μ$ with essential support on a single arc. In particular, this allows the measure to have a singular component…
Extremal problems for typically real polynomials go back to a paper by W. W. Rogosinski and G. Szegő, where a number of problems were posed, which were partially solved by using orthogonal polynomials. Since then, not too many new results on extremal properties of typically real polynomials have been obtained. Fundamental work in this direction is due to M.~Brandt, who found a novel way of solving extremal problems. In particular, he solved C. Michel's problem of estimating the modulus of a typically real polynomial of odd degree. On the other hand, D. K. Dimitrov showed the effectivity of Fej…
We review recent results on necessary and sufficient conditions for measures on $\mathbb{R}$ and $\partial\mathbb{D}$ to yield exponential decay of the recursion coefficients of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. We include results on the relation of detailed asymptotics of the recursion coefficients to detailed analyticity of the measures. We present an analog of Carmona's formula for OPRL. A major role is played by the Szego and Jost functions.
We consider polynomials that are orthogonal on $[-1,1]$ with respect to a modified Jacobi weight $(1-x)^α(1+x)^βh(x)$, with $α,β>-1$ and $h$ real analytic and stricly positive on $[-1,1]$. We obtain full asymptotic expansions for the monic and orthonormal polynomials outside the interval $[-1,1]$, for the recurrence coefficients and for the leading coefficients of the orthonormal polynomials. We also deduce asymptotic behavior for the Hankel determinants. For the asymptotic analysis we use the steepest descent technique for Riemann--Hilbert problems developed by Deift and Zhou, and applied to …
Matrix orthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit circle and the theory of Toda-like integrable systems are connected using the Gauss--Borel factorization of two, left and a right, Cantero-Morales-Velazquez block moment matrices, which are constructed using a quasi-definite matrix measure. A block Gauss-Borel factorization problem of these moment matrices leads to two sets of biorthogonal matrix orthogonal Laurent polynomials and matrix Szegő polynomials, which can be expressed in terms of Schur complements of bordered truncations of the block moment matrix. The corresponding block extension o…
In this survey article, we review some results and conjectures related to orthogonal polynomials on Cantor sets. The main purpose of this paper is to emphasize the role of equilibrium measures in order to have a general theory of sufficiently good measures (measures that behave similarly to measures which are in the Szegő class and the isospectral torus in the finite gap case) supported on totally disconnected subsets of $\mathbb{R}$. We present some open problems a number of which can be studied numerically.
We study the moment space corresponding to matrix measures on the unit circle. Moment points are characterized by non-negative definiteness of block Toeplitz matrices. This characterization is used to derive an explicit representation of orthogonal polynomials with respect to matrix measures on the unit circle and to present a geometric definition of canonical moments. It is demonstrated that these geometrically defined quantities coincide with the Verblunsky coefficients, which appear in the Szegö recursions for the matrix orthogonal polynomials. Finally, we provide an alternative proof of th…
Our goal is to find asymptotic formulas for orthonormal polynomials $P_{n}(z)$ with the recurrence coefficients slowly stabilizing as $n\to\infty$. To that end, we develop spectral theory of Jacobi operators with long-range coefficients and study the corresponding second order difference equation. We suggest an Ansatz for its solutions playing the role of the semiclassical Green-Liouville Ansatz for solutions of the Schrödinger equation. The formulas obtained for $P_{n}(z)$ as $n\to\infty$ generalize the classical Bernstein-Szegö asymptotic formulas.
In this contribution, the behavior of zeros of orthogonal polynomials associated with canonical linear spectral transformations of measures supported in the real line is analyzed. An electrostatic interpretation of them is given.
We review properties of the $q-$Hermite polynomials and indicate their links with the Chebyshev, Rogers--Szegö, Al-Salam--Chihara, continuous $q-$% utraspherical polynomials. In particular we recall the connection coefficients between these families of polynomials. We also present some useful and important finite and infinite expansions involving polynomials of these families including symmetric and non-symmetric kernels. In the paper we collect scattered throughout literature useful but not widely known facts concerning these polynomials. It is based on 43 positions of predominantly recent li…
We derive lower bounds for the $L^p(μ)$ norms of monic extremal polynomials with respect to compactly supported probability measures $μ$. We obtain a sharp universal lower bound for all $0<p<\infty$ and all measures in the Szegő class and an improved lower bound on $L^2(μ)$ norm for several classes of orthogonal polynomials including Jacobi polynomials, isospectral torus of a finite gap set and orthogonal polynomials with respect to the equilibrium measure of an arbitrary non-polar compact subset of $\mathbb{R}$.
Orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle are completely determined by their reflection coefficients through the Szegő recurrences. We assume that the reflection coefficients converge to some complex number a with 0 < |a| < 1. The polynomials then live essentially on the arc {e^(i theta): alpha <= theta <= 2 pi - alpha} where cos alpha/2 = sqrt(1-|a|^2) with 0 <= alpha <= 2 pi. We analyze the orthogonal polynomials by comparing them with the orthogonal polynomials with constant reflection coefficients, which were studied earlier by Ya. L. Geronimus and N. I. Akhiezer. In particular, we show th…

We consider determinants of Wronskian type whose entries are multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with a path connecting two multi-indices. By assuming that the weight functions form an algebraic Chebyshev (AT) system, we show that the polynomials represented by the Wronskians keep a constant sign in some cases, while in some other cases oscillatory behavior appears, which generalizes classical results for orthogonal polynomials due to Karlin and Szegő. There are two applications of our results. The first application arises from the observation that the $m$-th moment of the average chara…
In this paper, we study a certain linear statistics of the unitary Laguerre ensembles, motivated in part by an integrable quantum field theory at finite temperature. It transpires that this is equivalent to the characterization of a sequence of polynomials orthogonal with respect to the weight $$ w(x)=w(x,s):=x^{\al}\rme^{-x}\rme^{-s/x}, \quad 0\leq x<\infty, \al>0, s>0, $$ namely, the determination of the associated Hankel determinant and recurrence coefficients. Here $w(x,s)$ is the Laguerre weight $x^{\al}\:\rme^{-x}$ 'perturbed' by a multiplicative factor $\rme^{-s/x},$ which induces an in…
The sequence $\{\,_2ϕ_1(q^{-k},q^{b+1};\,q^{-\overline{b}-k+1};\, q, q^{-\overline{b}+1/2} z)\}_{k \geq 0}$ of basic hypergeometric polynomials is known to be orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to the weight function $|(q^{1/2}e^{iθ};\,q)_{\infty}/(q^{b+1/2}e^{iθ};\,q)_{\infty}|^2$. This result, where one must take the parameters $q$ and $b$ to be $0 < q < 1$ and $\Re(b) > -1/2$, is due to P.I. Pastro \cite{Pastro-1985}. In the present manuscript we deal with the orthogonal polynomials $\hatΦ_{n}(b;.)$ and $\checkΦ_{n}(b;.)$ on the unit circle with respect to the two parametric familie…
In this contribution, discrete semiclassical orthogonal polynomials of class $s\leq2$ are studied. By considering all possible solutions of the Pearson equation, we obtain the canonical families in each class. We also consider limit relations between these and other families of orthogonal polynomials.
We study the discrete semiclassical orthogonal polynomials of class s=1. By considering all possible solutions of the Pearson equation, we obtain five canonical families. We also consider limit relations between these and other families of orthogonal polynomials.
