We introduce the Szegö class, Sz(E), for an arbitrary Parreau-Widom set E in R and study the dynamics of its elements under the left shift. When the direct Cauchy theorem holds on C\E, we show that to each J in Sz(E) there is a unique element J' in the isospectral torus, T_E, so that the left-shifts of J are asymptotic to the orbit {J'_m} on T_E. Moreover, we show that the ratio of the associated orthogonal polynomials has a limit, expressible in terms of Jost functions, as the degree n tends to infinity. This enables us to describe the large n behaviour of the orthogonal polynomials for every J in the Szegö class.
We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a Jacobi matrix to produce orthogonal polynomials with Szegő asymptotics off the real axis. A key idea is to prove the equivalence of Szegő asymptotics and of Jost asymptotics for the Jost solution. We also prove $L^2$ convergence of Szegő asymptotics on the spectrum.
For the polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to the measure from the Szego class we prove that the polynomial entropy integrals can grow. The estimate obtained is sharp.
We find the raising and lowering operators for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle introduced by Szegő and for their four parameter generalization to ${}_4ϕ_3$ biorthogonal rational functions on the unit circle.
By using the Szegő's transformation we deduce new relations between the recurrence coefficients for orthogonal polynomials on the real line and the Verblunsky parameters of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. Moreover, we study the relation between the corresponding $\mathcal{S}$-functions and $\mathcal{C}$-functions
We determine which sets saturate the Szeg}o and Schiefermayr lower bounds on the norms of Chebyshev Polynomials. We also discuss sets that saturate the Totik--Widom upper bound.
We present a geometric approach to the asymptotics of the Legendre polynomials $P_{k,n+1}$, based on the Szegö kernel of the Fermat quadric hypersurface, and leading to complete asymptotic expansions holding on expanding subintervals of $[-1,1]$.
Schur-Szego composition of polynomials of degree N introduces an interesting semigroup structure on polynomial spaces. In this note we show how it interacts with the stratification of polynomials according to the multiplicity of their zeros and present the induced semigroup structure on the set of all ordered partitions of N.
The Rogers-Szegö polynomials are natural q-analogues of Newton binomials. In general they have no closed expression. We consider some exceptional cases which are products of a factor with a closed formula and another one with nice values for q=1 and q=-1. These are related to normalized Rogers-Szegö polynomials which have nice expansions and Hankel determinants. The Exposition of the paper is elementary and almost self-contained.
In this paper, we generalize Szego's theorem for orthogonal polynomials on the real line to infinite gap sets of Parreau-Widom type. This notion includes Cantor sets of positive measure. The Szego condition involves the equilibrium measure which is shown to be absolutely continuous. Our approach builds on a canonical factorization of the M-function and the covering space formalism of Sodin-Yuditskii.
Let p(t) be a trigonometric polynomial, non-negative on the unit circle. We say that a measure σbelongs to a polynomial Szego class, if the logarithm of its density is summable over the circle with the weight p(t). For the associated orthogonal polynomials, we obtain pointwise asymptotics inside the unit disc. Then, we show that these asymptotics holds in L^2-sense on the unit circle. As a corollary, we get an existence of certain modified wave operators.
We study semi-infinite Jacobi matrices $H=H_{0}+V$ corresponding to trace class perturbations $V$ of the "free" discrete Schrödinger operator $H_{0}$. Our goal is to construct various spectral quantities of the operator $H$, such as the weight function, eigenfunctions of its continuous spectrum, the wave operators for the pair $H_{0}$, $H$, the scattering matrix, the spectral shift function, etc. This allows us to find the asymptotic behavior of the orthonormal polynomials $P_{n}(z)$ associated to the Jacobi matrix $H $ as $n\to\infty$. In particular, we consider the case of $z$ inside the spe…
We survey results on Chebyshev polynomials centered around the work of H. Widom. In particular, we discuss asymptotics of the polynomials and their norms and general upper and lower bounds for the norms. Several open problems are also presented.
Let p be a trigonometric polynomial, nonnegative on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$. We say that a measure $σ$ on $\mathbb{T}$ belongs to the polynomial Szego class, if $dσ=sigma'_{ac}dθ+dσ_s$, $σ_s$ is singular, and $p\ln σ'_{ac}$ is summable on $\mathbb{T}$. For the associated orthogonal polynomials, we obtain pointwise asymptotics inside the unit disc. Then, we show that this asymptotics holds in the $L^2$ sense on the unit circle. As a corollary, we get existense of certain modified wave operators.
Let $μ$ be a non-trivial probability measure on the unit circle $\partial\bbD$, $w$ the density of its absolutely continuous part, $α_n$ its Verblunsky coefficients, and $Φ_n$ its monic orthogonal polynomials. In this paper we compute the coefficients of $Φ_n$ in terms of the $α_n$. If the function $\log w$ is in $L^1(dθ)$, we do the same for its Fourier coefficients. As an application we prove that if $α_n \in \ell^4$ and $Q(z) = \sum_{m=0}^N q_m z^m$ is a polynomial, then with $\bar Q(z) = \sum_{m=0}^N \bar q_m z^m$ and $S$ the left shift operator on sequences we have $|Q(e^{iθ})|^2 \log w(θ…
The one variable Bernstein-Szego theory for orthogonal polynomials on the real line is extended to a class of two variable measures. The polynomials orthonormal in the total degree ordering and the lexicographical ordering are constructed and their recurrence coefficients discussed.
Thiran and Detaille give an explicit formula for the asymptotics of the sup-norm of the Chebyshev polynomials on a circular arc. We give the so-called $\textrm{Szeg\H o}$-Widom asymptotics for this domain, i.e., explicit expressions for the asymptotics of the corresponding extremal polynomials. Moreover, we solve a similar problem with respect to the upper envelope of a family of polynomials uniformly bounded on this arc. That is, we give explicit formulas for the asymptotics of the error of approximation as well as of the extremal functions. Our computations show that in the proper normalizat…
We extend some classical theorems in the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle to the matrix case. In particular, we prove a matrix analogue of Szegő's theorem. As a by-product, we also obtain an elementary proof of the distance formula by Helson and Lowdenslager.
We study the asymptotic behavior, as $n\to\infty$, of ratios of Toeplitz determinants $D_n(e^h dμ)/D_n(dμ)$ defined by a measure $μ$ on the unit circle and a sufficiently smooth function $h$. The approach we follow is based on the theory of orthogonal polynomials. We prove that the second order asymptotics depends on $h$ and only a few Verblunsky coefficients associated to $μ$. As a result, we establish a relative version of the Strong Szegő Limit Theorem for a wide class of measures $μ$ with essential support on a single arc. In particular, this allows the measure to have a singular component…
Each degree $n+k$ polynomial of the form $(x+1)^k(x^n+c_1x^{n-1}+\cdots +c_n)$, $k\in \mathbb{N}$, is representable as Schur-Szegő composition of $n$ polynomials of the form $(x+1)^{n+k-1}(x+a_j)$. We study properties of the affine mapping $Φ_{n,k}$~:~$(c_1,\ldots ,c_n)$ $\mapsto$ $(σ_1, \ldots ,σ_n)$, where $σ_i$ are the elementary symmetric polynomials of the numbers $a_j$. We study also properties of a similar mapping for functions of the form $e^xP$, where $P$ is a polynomial, $P(0)=1$, and we extend the Descartes rule to them.
Every polynomial of the form $P=(x+1)(x^{n-1}+c_1x^{n-2}+\cdots +c_{n-1})$ is representable as Schur-Szegő composition of $n-1$ polynomials of the form $(x+1)^{n-1}(x+a_i)$, where the numbers $a_i$ are unique up to permutation. We give necessary and sufficient conditions upon the possible values of the $8$-vector whose components are the number of positive, zero, negative and complex roots of a real polynomial $P$ and the number of positive, zero, negative and complex among the quantities $a_i$ corresponding to $P$. A similar result is proved about entire functions of the form $e^xR$, where $R…
We provide a representation in terms of certain canonical functions for a sequence of polynomials orthogonal with respect to a weight that is strictly positive and analytic on the unit circle. These formulas yield a complete asymptotic expansion for these polynomials, valid uniformly in the whole complex plane. As a consequence, we obtain some results about the distribution of zeros of these polynomials. The main technique is the steepest descent analysis of Deift and Zhou, based on the matrix Riemann-Hilbert characterization proposed by Fokas, Its and Kitaev.
Each degree $n$ polynomial in one variable of the form $(x+1)(x^{n-1}+c_1x^{n-2}+\cdots +c_{n-1})$ is representable in a unique way as a Schur-Szegő composition of $n-1$ polynomials of the form $(x+1)^{n-1}(x+a_i)$, see \cite{Ko1}, \cite{AlKo} and \cite{Ko2}. Set $σ_j:=\sum _{1\leq i_1<\cdots <i_j\leq n-1}a_{i_1}\cdots a_{i_j}$. The eigenvalues of the affine mapping $(c_1,\ldots ,c_{n-1})\mapsto (σ_1,\ldots ,σ_{n-1})$ are positive rational numbers and its eigenvectors are defined by hyperbolic polynomials (i.e. with real roots only). In the present paper we prove interlacing properties of the …
We give an asymptotic upper bound as $n\to\infty$ for the entropy integral $$E_n(w)= -\int p_n^2(x)\log (p_n^2(x))w(x)dx,$$ where $p_n$ is the $n$th degree orthonormal polynomial with respect to a weight $w(x)$ on $[-1,1]$ which belongs to the Szegő class. We also study two functionals closely related to the entropy integral. First, their asymptotic behavior is completely described for weights $w$ in the Bernstein class. Then, as for the entropy, we obtain asymptotic upper bounds for these two functionals when $w(x)$ belongs to the Szegő class. In each case, we give conditions for these upper …
We continue studying polynomials generated by the Szegő recursion when a finite number of Verblunsky coefficients lie outside the closed unit disk. We prove some asymptotic results for the corresponding orthogonal polynomials and then translate them to the real line to obtain the Szegő asymptotics for the resulting polynomials. The latter polynomials give rise to a non-symmetric tridiagonal matrix but it is a finite-rank perturbation of a symmetric Jacobi matrix.
In 1976 Suffridge proved an intruiging theorem regarding the convolution of polynomials with zeros only on the unit circle. His result generalizes a special case of the fundamental Grace-Szegö convolution theorem, but so far it is an open problem whether there is a Suffridge-like extension of the general Grace-Szegö convolution theorem. In this paper we try to approach this question from two different directions: First, we show that Suffridge's convolution theorem holds for a certain class of polynomials with zeros in the unit disk and thus obtain an extension of one further special case of th…
In this work, some theorems are established for orthogonal trigonometric polynomials (OTP) including Favard, Baxter, Geronimus, Rakhmanov, Szegö and the strong Szegö theorems which are important in the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle (OPUC). All these results are based on the mutual representation theorem of OPUC and OTP which deduced by a Riemann-Hilbert problem simultaneously characterizing them. In addition, Szegö recursions, four-term recurrences and some new identities for OPUC and OTP are also obtained by using their Riemann-Hilbert characterizations respectively.
Let $M$ be complex projective manifold, and $A$ a positive line bundle on it. Assume that $SU(2)$ acts on $M$ in a Hamiltonian manner, with nowhere vanishing moment map, and that this action linearizes to $A$. Then there is an associated unitary representation of $G$ on the associated algebro-geometric Hardy space, and the isotypical components are all finite dimensional. We consider the local and global asymptotic properties the equivariant projector associated to a weight $k \, \boldsymbol{ ν}$, when $\boldsymbol{ ν}$ is fixed and $k\rightarrow +\infty$.
We present a new viewpoint (namely, reproducing kernels) and new proofs for several recent results of J. Geronimo and H. Woerdeman on orthogonal polynomials on the two dimenional torus (and related subjects). In addition, we show how their results give a new proof of Ando's inequality via an equivalent version proven by Cole and Wermer. A simple necessary and sufficient condition for two variable polynomial stability is also given.
Let $\widehatσ$ be a Cauchy transform of a possibly complex-valued Borel measure $σ$ and $\{p_n\}$ be a system of orthonormal polynomials with respect to a measure $μ$, $\mathrm{supp}(μ)\cap\mathrm{supp}(σ)=\varnothing$. An $(m,n)$-th Frobenius-Padé approximant to $\widehatσ$ is a rational function $P/Q$, $\mathrm{deg}(P)\leq m$, $\mathrm{deg}(Q)\leq n$, such that the first $m+n+1$ Fourier coefficients of the linear form $Q\widehatσ-P$ vanish when the form is developed into a series with respect to the polynomials $p_n$. We investigate the convergence of the Frobenius-Padé approximants to $\wi…
Let $M$ be complex projective manifold, and $A$ a positive line bundle on it. Assume that a compact and connected Lie group $G$ acts on $M$ in a Hamiltonian manner, and that this action linearizes to $A$. Then there is an associated unitary representation of $G$ on the associated algebro-geometric Hardy space. If the moment map is nowhere vanishing, the isotypical component are all finite dimensional, they are generally not spaces of sections of some power of $A$. One is then led to study the local and global asymptotic properties the isotypical component associated to a weight $k \, \boldsymb…
Szego's procedure to connect orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and orthogonal polynomials on [-1,1] is generalized to nonsymmetric measures. It generates the so-called semi-orthogonal functions on the linear space of Laurent polynomials L, and leads to a new orthogonality structure in the module LxL. This structure can be interpreted in terms of a 2x2 matrix measure on [-1,1], and semi-orthogonal functions provide the corresponding sequence of orthogonal matrix polynomials. This gives a connection between orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and certain classes of matrix orthogona…
We review recent results on necessary and sufficient conditions for measures on $\mathbb{R}$ and $\partial\mathbb{D}$ to yield exponential decay of the recursion coefficients of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. We include results on the relation of detailed asymptotics of the recursion coefficients to detailed analyticity of the measures. We present an analog of Carmona's formula for OPRL. A major role is played by the Szego and Jost functions.
We study algebraic curves that are envelopes of families of polygons supported on the unit circle T. We address, in particular, a characterization of such curves of minimal class and show that all realizations of these curves are essentially equivalent and can be described in terms of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle (OPUC), also known as Szegő polynomials. Our results have connections to classical results from algebraic and projective geometry, such as theorems of Poncelet, Darboux, and Kippenhahn; numerical ranges of a class of matrices; and Blaschke products and disk functions. Thi…
Extremal problems for typically real polynomials go back to a paper by W. W. Rogosinski and G. Szegő, where a number of problems were posed, which were partially solved by using orthogonal polynomials. Since then, not too many new results on extremal properties of typically real polynomials have been obtained. Fundamental work in this direction is due to M.~Brandt, who found a novel way of solving extremal problems. In particular, he solved C. Michel's problem of estimating the modulus of a typically real polynomial of odd degree. On the other hand, D. K. Dimitrov showed the effectivity of Fej…
We prove Szegő-Widom asymptotics for the Chebyshev polynomials of a compact subset of $\mathbb{R}$ which is regular for potential theory and obeys the Parreau-Widom and DCT conditions.

Rakhmanov's theorem for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle gives a sufficient condition on the orthogonality measure for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle, in order that the reflection coefficients (the recurrence coefficients in the Szego recurrence relation) converge to zero. In this paper we give the analog for orthogonal matrix polynomials on the unit circle.
We study residual polynomials, $R_{x_0,n}^{(\mathfrak{e})}$, $\mathfrak{e}\subset\mathbb{R}$, $x_0\in\mathbb{R}\setminus\mathfrak{e}$, which are the degree at most $n$ polynomials with $R(x_0)=1$ that minimize the $\sup$ norm on $\mathfrak{e}$. New are upper bounds on their norms (that are optimal in some cases) and Szegő--Widom asymptotics under fairly general circumstances. We also discuss several illuminating examples and some results in the complex case.
We give the strong asymptotic of Cauchy biorthogonal polynomials under the assumption that the defining measures are supported on non intersecting intervals of the real line and satisfy Szegő's condition. The biorthogonal polynomials are connected with certain mixed type Hermite-Padé polynomials, which verify full orthogonality relations with respect to some varying measures. Thus, the strong asymptotic of orthogonal polynomials with respect to varying measures plays a key role in the study.
We discuss the asymptotic behavior (as $n\to \infty$) of the entropic integrals $$ E_n= - \int_{-1}^1 \log \big(p^2_n(x) \big) p^2_n(x) w(x) d x, $$ and $$ F_n = -\int_{-1}^1 \log (p_n^2(x)w(x)) p_n^2(x) w(x) dx, $$ when $w$ is the symmetric Pollaczek weight on $[-1,1]$ with main parameter $λ\geq 1$, and $p_n$ is the corresponding orthonormal polynomial of degree $n$. It is well known that $w$ does not belong to the Szegő class, which implies in particular that $E_n\to -\infty$. For this sequence we find the first two terms of the asymptotic expansion. Furthermore, we show that $F_n \to \log (…
Matrix orthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit circle and the theory of Toda-like integrable systems are connected using the Gauss--Borel factorization of two, left and a right, Cantero-Morales-Velazquez block moment matrices, which are constructed using a quasi-definite matrix measure. A block Gauss-Borel factorization problem of these moment matrices leads to two sets of biorthogonal matrix orthogonal Laurent polynomials and matrix Szegő polynomials, which can be expressed in terms of Schur complements of bordered truncations of the block moment matrix. The corresponding block extension o…
