M. Derevyagin, L. Vinet and A. Zhedanov introduced in Constr. Approx. 36 (2012) 513-535 a new connection between orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and the real line. It maps any real CMV matrix into a Jacobi one depending on a real parameter $λ$. These authors prove that this map yields a natural link between the Jacobi polynomials on the unit circle and the little and big $-1$ Jacobi polynomials on the real line. They also provide explicit expressions for the measure and orthogonal polynomials associated with the Jacobi matrix in terms of those related to the CMV matrix, but only for the value $λ=1$ which simplifies the connection -basic DVZ connection-. However, similar explicit expressions for an arbitrary value of $λ$ -- (general) DVZ connection -- are missing. This is the main problem overcome in this paper.
This work introduces a new approach to the DVZ connection which formulates it as a two-dimensional eigenproblem by using known properties of CMV matrices. This allows us to go further, providing explicit relations between the measures and orthogonal polynomials for the general DVZ connection. It turns out that this connection maps a measure on the unit circle into a rational perturbation of an even measure supported on two symmetric intervals of the real line, which reduce to a single interval for the basic DVZ connection, while the perturbation becomes a degree one polynomial. Some instances of the DVZ connection are shown to give new one-parameter families of orthogonal polynomials on the real line.
A classical result due to Bochner classifies the orthogonal polynomials on the real line which are common eigenfunctions of a second order linear differential operator. We settle a natural version of the Bochner problem on the unit circle which answers a similar question concerning orthogonal Laurent polynomials and can be formulated as a bispectral problem involving CMV matrices. We solve this CMV bispectral problem in great generality proving that, except the Lebesgue measure, no other one on the unit circle yields a sequence of orthogonal Laurent polynomials which are eigenfunctions of a li…
We introduce a new map from polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle to polynomials orthogonal on the real axis. This map is closely related with the theory of CMV matrices. It contains an arbitrary parameter which leads to a linear operator pencil. We show that the little and big -1 Jacobi polynomials are naturally obtained under this map from the Jacobi polynomials on the unit circle.
Nenciu and Simon found that the analogue of the Toda system in the context of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle is the defocusing Ablowitz-Ladik system. In this paper we use the CMV and extended CMV matrices, respectively, to construct Lax pair representations for this system in the periodic, finite, and infinite cases.
We develop a theory of Darboux transformations for CMV matrices, canonical representations of the unitary operators. In perfect analogy with their self-adjoint version -- the Darboux transformations of Jacobi matrices -- they are equivalent to Laurent polynomial modifications of the underlying measures. We address other questions which emphasize the similarities between Darboux transformations for Jacobi and CMV matrices, like their (almost) isospectrality or the relation that they establish between the corresponding orthogonal polynomials, showing also that both transformations are connected …
Orthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit circle and the theory of Toda-like integrable systems are connected using the Gauss--Borel factorization of a Cantero-Moral-Velazquez moment matrix, which is constructed in terms of a complex quasi-definite measure supported in the unit circle. The factorization of the moment matrix leads to orthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit circle and the corresponding second kind functions. Jacobi operators, 5-term recursion relations and Christoffel-Darboux kernels, projecting to particular spaces of truncated Laurent polynomials, and corresponding Christo…
Rakhmanov's theorem for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle gives a sufficient condition on the orthogonality measure for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle, in order that the reflection coefficients (the recurrence coefficients in the Szego recurrence relation) converge to zero. In this paper we give the analog for orthogonal matrix polynomials on the unit circle.
It is shown that monic orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle are the characteristic polynomials of certain five-diagonal matrices depending on the Schur parameters. This result is achieved through the study of orthogonal Laurent polynomials on the unit circle. More precisely, it is a consequence of the five term recurrence relation obtained for these orthogonal Laurent polynomials, and the one to one correspondence established between them and the orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. As an application, some results relating the behavior of the zeros of orthogonal polynomials and the …
Szego's procedure to connect orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and orthogonal polynomials on [-1,1] is generalized to nonsymmetric measures. It generates the so-called semi-orthogonal functions on the linear space of Laurent polynomials L, and leads to a new orthogonality structure in the module LxL. This structure can be interpreted in terms of a 2x2 matrix measure on [-1,1], and semi-orthogonal functions provide the corresponding sequence of orthogonal matrix polynomials. This gives a connection between orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and certain classes of matrix orthogona…
By using the Szegő's transformation we deduce new relations between the recurrence coefficients for orthogonal polynomials on the real line and the Verblunsky parameters of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. Moreover, we study the relation between the corresponding $\mathcal{S}$-functions and $\mathcal{C}$-functions
We derive raising and lowering operators for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and find second order differential and $q$-difference equations for these polynomials. A general functional equation is found which allows one to relate the zeros of the orthogonal polynomials to the stationary values of an explicit quasi-energy and implies recurrences on the orthogonal polynomial coefficients. We also evaluate the discriminants and quantized discriminants of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle.
We apply a theorem of Geronimus to derive some new formulas connecting Schur functions with orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. The applications include the description of the associated measures and a short proof of Boyd's result about Schur functions. We also give a simple proof for the above mentioned theorem of Geronimus.
We consider orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle with respect to a weight which is a quotient of $q$-gamma functions. We show that the Verblunsky coefficients of these polynomials satisfy discrete Painlevé equations, in a Lax form, which correspond to an $A_3^{(1)}$ surface in Sakai's classification.
We present a new explicit family of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle with a dense point spectrum. This family is expressed in terms of q-hypergeometric function of type ${_2}ϕ_1$. The orthogonality measure is the wrapped geometric distribution. Some "classical" properties of the above polynomials are presented.
The zeros of semi-orthogonal functions with respect to a probability measure mu supported on the unit circle can be applied to obtain Szego quadrature formulas. The discrete measures generated by these formulas weakly converge to the orthogonality measure mu. In this paper we construct families of semi-orthogonal functions with interlacing zeros, and give a representation of the support of mu in terms of the asymptotic distribution of such zeros.
We introduce two explicit examples of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle. Moments and the reflection coefficients are expressed in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions. We find explicit expression for these polynomials in terms of a new type of elliptic hypergeometric function. We show that obtained polynomials are orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to a dense point meausure, i.e. the spectrum consists from infinite number points of increase which are dense on the unit circle. We construct also corresponding explicit systems of polynomials orthogonal on the interval of the real ax…
This paper is a continuation of the recent paper "CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomials: Christoffel formulas for Christoffel and Geronimus transformations" by the same authors. The behavior of quasidefinite sesquilinear forms for Laurent polynomials in the complex plane, characterized by bivariate linear functionals, and corresponding CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomial families --including Sobolev and discrete Sobolev orthogonalities--- under two type of Geronimus--Uvarov transformations is studied. Either the linear functionals are multiplied by a Laurent polynomial and divided by the comple…
We study the moment space corresponding to matrix measures on the unit circle. Moment points are characterized by non-negative definiteness of block Toeplitz matrices. This characterization is used to derive an explicit representation of orthogonal polynomials with respect to matrix measures on the unit circle and to present a geometric definition of canonical moments. It is demonstrated that these geometrically defined quantities coincide with the Verblunsky coefficients, which appear in the Szegö recursions for the matrix orthogonal polynomials. Finally, we provide an alternative proof of th…
In this paper we study the following family of hypergeometric polynomials: $y_n(x) = \frac{ (-1)^ρ}{ n! } x^n {}_2 F_0(-n,ρ;-;-\frac{1}{x})$, depending on a parameter $ρ\in\mathbb{N}$. Differential equations of orders $ρ+1$ and $2$ for these polynomials are given. A recurrence relation for $y_n$ is derived as well. Polynomials $y_n$ are Sobolev orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle with an explicit matrix measure.
Quasidefinite sesquilinear forms for Laurent polynomials in the complex plane and corresponding CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomial families are studied. Bivariate linear functionals encompass large families of orthogonalities like Sobolev and discrete Sobolev types. Two possible Christoffel transformations of these linear functionals are discussed. Either the linear functionals are multiplied by a Laurent polynomial, or are multiplied by the complex conjugate of a Laurent polynomial. For the Geronimus transformation, the linear functional is perturbed in two possible manners as well, by a div…
Let ${z_n}$ be a sequence in the unit disk ${z\in\mathbb{C}:|z|<1}$. It is known that there exists a unique positive Borel measure in the unit circle ${z\in\mathbb{C}:|z|=1}$ such that the orthogonal polynomials ${Φ_n}$ satisfy [Φ_n(z_n)=0] for each $n=1,2,...$. Characteristics of the orthogonality measure and asymptotic properties of the orthogonal polynomial are given in terms of asymptotic behavior of the sequence ${z_n}$. Particular attention is paid to periodic sequence of zeros ${z_n}$ of period two and three.
In this paper we prove that the simplest band representations of unitary operators on a Hilbert space are five-diagonal. Orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle play an essential role in the development of this result, and also provide a parametrization of such five-diagonal representations which shows specially simple and interesting decomposition and factorization properties. As an application we get the reduction of the spectral problem of any unitary Hessenberg matrix to the spectral problem of a five-diagonal one. Two applications of these results to the study of orthogonal polynomials …
Orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle are completely determined by their reflection coefficients through the Szegő recurrences. We assume that the reflection coefficients converge to some complex number a with 0 < |a| < 1. The polynomials then live essentially on the arc {e^(i theta): alpha <= theta <= 2 pi - alpha} where cos alpha/2 = sqrt(1-|a|^2) with 0 <= alpha <= 2 pi. We analyze the orthogonal polynomials by comparing them with the orthogonal polynomials with constant reflection coefficients, which were studied earlier by Ya. L. Geronimus and N. I. Akhiezer. In particular, we show th…
Let there be given a probability measure $μ$ on the unit circle $\TT$ of the complex plane and consider the inner product induced by $μ$. In this paper we consider the problem of orthogonalizing a sequence of monomials $\{z^{r_k}\}_k$, for a certain order of the $r_k\in\mathbb{Z}$, by means of the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization process. This leads to a basis of orthonormal Laurent polynomials $\{ψ_k\}_k$. We show that the matrix representation with respect to the basis $\{ψ_k\}_k$ of the operator of multiplication by $z$ is an infinite unitary or isometric matrix allowing a 'snake-shaped' matr…
In the case when the weight and its inverse belong to BMO(T), we prove the asymptotics of the monic orthogonal polynomials in L^p, 2<p<p_0. Immediate applications include the estimates on the uniform norm and asymptotics for the polynomial entropy.
The Kronecker polynomial $K(z)$ is a finite product of cyclotomic polynomials $C_j(z)$. Any Kronecker polynomial $K(z)$ of degree $N+1$ with simple roots on the unit circle generates a finite set $Φ_0=1, Φ_1(z), \dots, Φ_N(z) $ of polynomials (para) orthogonal on the unit circle (POPUC). This set is determined uniquely by the condition $Φ_N(z) = (N+1)^{-1} K'(z)$. Such set can be called the set of Sturmian Kronecker POPUC. We present several new explicit examples of such POPUC. In particular, we define and analyze properties of the Sturmian cyclotomic POPUC generated by the cyclotomic polynomi…
We consider a sequence of polynomials $\{P_n\}_{n \geq 0}$ satisfying a special $R_{II}$ type recurrence relation where the zeros of $P_n$ are simple and lie on the real line. It turns out that the polynomial $P_n$, for any $n \geq 2$, is the characteristic polynomial of a simple $n \times n$ generalized eigenvalue problem. It is shown that with this $R_{II}$ type recurrence relation one can always associate a positive measure on the unit circle. The orthogonality property satisfied by $P_n$ with respect to this measure is also obtained. Finally, examples are given to justify the results.
We consider properties and applications of a sequence of polynomials known as complementary Romanovski-Routh polynomials (CRR polynomials for short). These polynomials, which follow from the Romanovski-Routh polynomials or complexified Jacobi polynomials, are known to be useful objects in the studies of the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation and also the wave functions of quarks. One of the main results of this paper is to show how the CRR-polynomials are related to a special class of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. As another main result, we have established their connection to a…
When a nontrivial measure $μ$ on the unit circle satisfies the symmetry $dμ(e^{i(2π-θ)}) = - dμ(e^{iθ})$ then the associated OPUC, say $S_n$, are all real. In this case, Delsarte and Genin, in 1986, have shown that the two sequences of para-orthogonal polynomials $\{zS_{n}(z) + S_{n}^{\ast}(z)\}$ and $\{zS_{n}(z) - S_{n}^{\ast}(z)\}$ satisfy three term recurrence formulas and have also explored some further consequences of these sequences of polynomials such as their connections to sequences of orthogonal polynomials on the interval $[-1,1]$. The same authors, in (1988), have also provided a m…
The sequence $\{\,_2ϕ_1(q^{-k},q^{b+1};\,q^{-\overline{b}-k+1};\, q, q^{-\overline{b}+1/2} z)\}_{k \geq 0}$ of basic hypergeometric polynomials is known to be orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to the weight function $|(q^{1/2}e^{iθ};\,q)_{\infty}/(q^{b+1/2}e^{iθ};\,q)_{\infty}|^2$. This result, where one must take the parameters $q$ and $b$ to be $0 < q < 1$ and $\Re(b) > -1/2$, is due to P.I. Pastro \cite{Pastro-1985}. In the present manuscript we deal with the orthogonal polynomials $\hatΦ_{n}(b;.)$ and $\checkΦ_{n}(b;.)$ on the unit circle with respect to the two parametric familie…
The objective of this manuscript is to study directly the Favard type theorem associated with the three term recurrence formula % \[ R_{n+1}(z) = \big[(1+ic_{n+1})z+(1-ic_{n+1})\big] R_{n}(z) - 4 d_{n+1} z R_{n-1}(z), \quad n \geq 1, \] % with $R_{0}(z) =1$ and $R_{1}(z) = (1+ic_{1})z+(1-ic_{1})$, where $\{c_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ is a real sequence and $\{d_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ is a positive chain sequence. We establish that there exists an unique nontrivial probability measure $μ$ on the unit circle for which $\{R_n(z) - 2(1-m_n)R_{n-1}(z)\}$ gives the sequence of orthogonal polynomials. Here, $…
An inifinite-dimensional representation of the double affine Hecke algebra of rank 1 and type $(C_1^{\vee},C_1)$ in which all generators are tridiagonal is presented. This representation naturally leads to two systems of polynomials that are orthogonal on the unit circle. These polynomials can be considered as circle analogs of the Askey-Wilson polynomials. The corresponding polynomials orthogonal on an interval are constructed and discussed.
We prove that for any $n\times n$ matrix, $A$, and $z$ with $|z|\geq \|A\|$, we have that $\|(z-A)^{-1}\|\leq\cot (\fracπ{4n}) \dist (z, \spec(A))^{-1}$. We apply this result to the study of random orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle.
An operator theoretic approach to orthogonal rational functions on the unit circle with poles in its exterior is presented in this paper. This approach is based on the identification of a suitable matrix representation of the multiplication operator associated with the corresponding orthogonality measure. Two different alternatives are discussed, depending whether we use for the matrix representation the standard basis of orthogonal rational functions, or a new one with poles alternatively located in the exterior and the interior of the unit circle. The corresponding representations are linear…
We provide a new closed form expression for the Geronimus polynomials on the unit circle and use it to obtain new results and formulas. Among our results is a universality result at an endpoint of an arc for polynomials orthogonal with respect to a Geronimus type weight on an arc of the unit circle. The key tool is a formula of McLaughlin for powers of a two-by-two matrix, which we use to derive convenient formulas for Geronimus polynomials.
The aim of this paper is to prove that Markov's theorem on variation of zeros of orthogonal polynomials on the real line [Math. Ann., 27:177-182,1886] remains essentially valid in the case of paraorthogonal polynomials on the unit circle.
In this survey, different aspects of the theory of orthogonal polynomials of one (real or complex) variable are reviewed. Orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle are not discussed.
The relation between the Toda lattices and similar nonlinear chains and orthogonal polynomials on the real line has been elaborated immensely for the last decades. We examine another system of the differential-difference equations known as the Schur flow within the framework of the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. This system can be exhibited in equivalent form as the Lax equation, and the corresponding spectral measure undergoes a simple transformation. The general result is illustrated on the modified Bessel measures on the unit circle and the long time behavior of their …
We consider measures supported on the bi-circle and review the recurrence relations satisfied by the orthogonal polynomials associated with these measures constructed using the lexicographical or reverse lexicographical ordering. New relations are derived among these recurrence coefficients. We extend the results of [8] on a parameterization for Bernstein-Szego measures supported on the bi-circle.
It was shown recently that associated with a pair of real sequences $\{\{c_{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}, \{d_{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}\}$, with $\{d_{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ a positive chain sequence, there exists a unique nontrivial probability measure $μ$ on the unit circle. The Verblunsky coefficients $\{α_{n}\}_{n=0}^{\infty}$ associated with the orthogonal polynomials with respect to $μ$ are given by the relation $$ α_{n-1}=\overlineτ_{n-1}\left[\frac{1-2m_{n}-ic_{n}}{1-ic_{n}}\right], \quad n \geq 1, $$ where $τ_0 = 1$, $τ_{n}=\prod_{k=1}^{n}(1-ic_{k})/(1+ic_{k})$, $n \geq 1$ and $\{m_{n}\}_{n=0}^{\inft…
A special class of orthogonal rational functions (ORFs) is presented in this paper. Starting with a sequence of ORFs and the corresponding rational functions of the second kind, we define a new sequence as a linear combination of the previous ones, the coefficients of this linear combination being self-reciprocal rational functions. We show that, under very general conditions on the self-reciprocal coefficients, this new sequence satisfies orthogonality conditions as well as a recurrence relation. Further, we identify the Caratheodory function of the corresponding orthogonality measure in term…
Ramanujan's trigonometric sum $c_q(n)$ can be interpreted as a set of trigonometric moments of a finite measure concentrated at primitive $q$-th roots of unity with equal masses. This gives rise to sets of corresponding polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle. We present explicit expressions of these polynomials for special values of $q$, e.g. when $q=p$ or $q=2p$ or $q=p^k$, where $p$ is a prime number. We generalize this procedure taking the Kronecker polynomial instead of cyclotomic one. In this case the moments are expressed as finite sums of $c_q(n)$ with different $q$.
A system of biorthogonal polynomials with respect to a complex valued measure supported on the unit circle is considered and all the terms with bounds are explicitly given for the remainder of an asymptotic formula given by R. Askey for this system. An electrostatic interpretation for the zeros of a class of para-orthogonal polynomials associated with the biorthogonal system is also considered.
We consider bivariate polynomials orthogonal on the bicircle with respect to a positive linear functional. The lexicographical and reverse lexicographical orderings are used to order the monomials. Recurrence formulas are derived between the polynomials of different degrees. These formulas link the orthogonal polynomials constructed using the lexicographical ordering with those constructed using the reverse lexicographical ordering. Relations between the coefficients in the recurrence formulas are derived and used to give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a positive line…
Let p(t) be a trigonometric polynomial, non-negative on the unit circle. We say that a measure σbelongs to a polynomial Szego class, if the logarithm of its density is summable over the circle with the weight p(t). For the associated orthogonal polynomials, we obtain pointwise asymptotics inside the unit disc. Then, we show that these asymptotics holds in L^2-sense on the unit circle. As a corollary, we get an existence of certain modified wave operators.
Strong asymptotics of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to a weight of the form $$ W(z) = w(z) \prod_{k=1}^m |z-a_k|^{2β_k}, \quad |z|=1, \quad |a_k|=1, \quad β_k>-1/2, \quad k=1, ..., m, $$ where $w(z)>0$ for $|z|=1$ and can be extended as a holomorphic and non-vanishing function to an annulus containing the unit circle. The formulas obtained are valid uniformly in the whole complex plane. As a consequence, we obtain some results about the distribution of zeros of these polynomials, the behavior of their leading and Verblunsky coefficients, as well as give an alternative …
