It was shown recently that associated with a pair of real sequences $\{\{c_{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}, \{d_{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}\}$, with $\{d_{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ a positive chain sequence, there exists a unique nontrivial probability measure $μ$ on the unit circle. The Verblunsky coefficients $\{α_{n}\}_{n=0}^{\infty}$ associated with the orthogonal polynomials with respect to $μ$ are given by the relation $$ α_{n-1}=\overlineτ_{n-1}\left[\frac{1-2m_{n}-ic_{n}}{1-ic_{n}}\right], \quad n \geq 1, $$ where $τ_0 = 1$, $τ_{n}=\prod_{k=1}^{n}(1-ic_{k})/(1+ic_{k})$, $n \geq 1$ and $\{m_{n}\}_{n=0}^{\infty}$ is the minimal parameter sequence of $\{d_{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$.
In this manuscript we consider this relation and its consequences by imposing some restrictions of sign and periodicity on the sequences $\{c_{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ and $\{m_{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$. When the sequence $
\{c_{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ is of alternating sign, we use information about the zeros of associated para-orthogonal polynomials to show that there is a gap in the support of the measure in the neighbourhood of $z= -1$. Furthermore, we show that it is possible to ge\-nerate periodic Verblunsky coefficients by choosing periodic sequences $\{c_{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ and $\{m_{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ with the additional restriction $c_{2n}=-c_{2n-1}, \, n\geq 1.$ We also give some results on periodic Verblunsky coefficients from the point of view of positive chain sequences. An example is provided to illustrate the results obtained.
We consider randomized Verblunsky parameters for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle as they relate to the problem of Steklov, bounding the polynomials' uniform norm independent of $n$.
We show that probability measures on the unit circle associated with Verblunsky coefficients obeying a Coulomb-type decay estimate have no singular continuous component.
We find a new formula for the orthonormal polynomials corresponding to a measure mu on the unit circle whose Verblunsky coefficients are periodic. The formula is presented using the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind and the discriminant of the periodic sequence. We present several applications including a resolution of a problem suggested by Simon in 2006 regarding the existence of singular points in the bands of the support of the measure and a universality result at all points of the essential support of mu.
We study the moment space corresponding to matrix measures on the unit circle. Moment points are characterized by non-negative definiteness of block Toeplitz matrices. This characterization is used to derive an explicit representation of orthogonal polynomials with respect to matrix measures on the unit circle and to present a geometric definition of canonical moments. It is demonstrated that these geometrically defined quantities coincide with the Verblunsky coefficients, which appear in the Szegö recursions for the matrix orthogonal polynomials. Finally, we provide an alternative proof of th…
By using the Szegő's transformation we deduce new relations between the recurrence coefficients for orthogonal polynomials on the real line and the Verblunsky parameters of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. Moreover, we study the relation between the corresponding $\mathcal{S}$-functions and $\mathcal{C}$-functions
We consider orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle with respect to a weight which is a quotient of $q$-gamma functions. We show that the Verblunsky coefficients of these polynomials satisfy discrete Painlevé equations, in a Lax form, which correspond to an $A_3^{(1)}$ surface in Sakai's classification.
In the first five sections, we deal with the class of probability measures with asymptotically periodic Verblunsky coefficients of p-type bounded variation. The goal is to investigate the perturbation of the Verblunsky coefficients when we add a pure point to a gap of the essential spectrum. For the asymptotically constant case, we give an asymptotic formula for the orthonormal polynomials in the gap, prove that the perturbation term converges and show the limit explicitly. Furthermore, we prove that the perturbation is of bounded variation. Then we generalize the method to the asymptotically …
Let $dμ$ be a probability measure on the unit circle and $dν$ be the measure formed by adding a pure point to $dμ$. We give a simple formula for the Verblunsky coefficients of $dν$ based on a result of Simon. Then we consider $dμ_0$, a probability measure on the unit circle with $\ell^2$ Verblunsky coefficients $(α_n (dμ_0))_{n=0}^{\infty}$ of bounded variation. We insert $m$ pure points to $dμ$, rescale, and form the probability measure $dμ_m$. We use the formula above to prove that the Verblunsky coefficients of $dμ_m$ are in the form $α_n(dμ_0) + \sum_{j=1}^m \frac{\ol{z_j}^{n} c_j}{n} + E_…
The connection of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle (OPUC) to the defocusing Ablowitz-Ladik integrable system involves the definition of a Poisson structure on the space of Verblunsky coefficients. In this paper, we compute the complete set of Poisson brackets for the monic orthogonal and the orthonormal polynomials on the unit circle, as well as for the second kind polynomials and the Wall polynomials. This answers a question posed by Cantero and Simon for the case of measures with finite support. We also show that the results hold for the case of measures with periodic Verblunsky coe…
Let $μ$ be a non-trivial probability measure on the unit circle $\partial\bbD$, $w$ the density of its absolutely continuous part, $α_n$ its Verblunsky coefficients, and $Φ_n$ its monic orthogonal polynomials. In this paper we compute the coefficients of $Φ_n$ in terms of the $α_n$. If the function $\log w$ is in $L^1(dθ)$, we do the same for its Fourier coefficients. As an application we prove that if $α_n \in \ell^4$ and $Q(z) = \sum_{m=0}^N q_m z^m$ is a polynomial, then with $\bar Q(z) = \sum_{m=0}^N \bar q_m z^m$ and $S$ the left shift operator on sequences we have $|Q(e^{iθ})|^2 \log w(θ…
The relation between the Toda lattices and similar nonlinear chains and orthogonal polynomials on the real line has been elaborated immensely for the last decades. We examine another system of the differential-difference equations known as the Schur flow within the framework of the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. This system can be exhibited in equivalent form as the Lax equation, and the corresponding spectral measure undergoes a simple transformation. The general result is illustrated on the modified Bessel measures on the unit circle and the long time behavior of their …
Matrix Szego biorthogonal polynomials for quasi-definite matrices of measures are studied. For matrices of Holder weights a Riemann-Hilbert problem is uniquely solved in terms of the matrix Szego polynomials and its Cauchy transforms. The Riemann-Hilbert problem is given as an appropriate framework for the discussion of the Szego matrix and the associated Szego recursion relations for the matrix orthogonal polynomials and its Cauchy transforms. Pearson type differential systems characterizing the matrix of weights are studied. These are linear systems of ordinary differential equations which a…
Let mu be a probability measure on the unit circle and nu be the measure formed by adding a pure point to mu. We give a formula for the Verblunsky coefficients of the perturbed measure, based on a result of Simon.
The sequence $\{\,_2ϕ_1(q^{-k},q^{b+1};\,q^{-\overline{b}-k+1};\, q, q^{-\overline{b}+1/2} z)\}_{k \geq 0}$ of basic hypergeometric polynomials is known to be orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to the weight function $|(q^{1/2}e^{iθ};\,q)_{\infty}/(q^{b+1/2}e^{iθ};\,q)_{\infty}|^2$. This result, where one must take the parameters $q$ and $b$ to be $0 < q < 1$ and $\Re(b) > -1/2$, is due to P.I. Pastro \cite{Pastro-1985}. In the present manuscript we deal with the orthogonal polynomials $\hatΦ_{n}(b;.)$ and $\checkΦ_{n}(b;.)$ on the unit circle with respect to the two parametric familie…
Strong asymptotics of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to a weight of the form $$ W(z) = w(z) \prod_{k=1}^m |z-a_k|^{2β_k}, \quad |z|=1, \quad |a_k|=1, \quad β_k>-1/2, \quad k=1, ..., m, $$ where $w(z)>0$ for $|z|=1$ and can be extended as a holomorphic and non-vanishing function to an annulus containing the unit circle. The formulas obtained are valid uniformly in the whole complex plane. As a consequence, we obtain some results about the distribution of zeros of these polynomials, the behavior of their leading and Verblunsky coefficients, as well as give an alternative …
We show that the Szegő matrices, associated with Verblunsky coefficients $\{α_n\}_{n\in\mathbb{Z}_+}$ obeying $\sum_{n = 0}^\infty n^γ|α_n|^2 < \infty$ for some $γ\in (0,1)$, are bounded for values $z \in \partial \mathbb{D}$ outside a set of Hausdorff dimension no more than $1 - γ$. In particular, the singular part of the associated probability measure on the unit circle is supported by a set of Hausdorff dimension no more than $1-γ$. This proves the OPUC Hausdorff dimension conjecture of Barry Simon from 2005.
Matrix orthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit circle and the theory of Toda-like integrable systems are connected using the Gauss--Borel factorization of two, left and a right, Cantero-Morales-Velazquez block moment matrices, which are constructed using a quasi-definite matrix measure. A block Gauss-Borel factorization problem of these moment matrices leads to two sets of biorthogonal matrix orthogonal Laurent polynomials and matrix Szegő polynomials, which can be expressed in terms of Schur complements of bordered truncations of the block moment matrix. The corresponding block extension o…
Orthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit circle and the theory of Toda-like integrable systems are connected using the Gauss--Borel factorization of a Cantero-Moral-Velazquez moment matrix, which is constructed in terms of a complex quasi-definite measure supported in the unit circle. The factorization of the moment matrix leads to orthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit circle and the corresponding second kind functions. Jacobi operators, 5-term recursion relations and Christoffel-Darboux kernels, projecting to particular spaces of truncated Laurent polynomials, and corresponding Christo…
In this manuscript, new algebraic and analytic aspects of the orthogonal polynomials satisfying $R_{II}$ type recurrence relation given by \begin{align*} \mathcal{P}_{n+1}(x) = (x-c_n)\mathcal{P}_n(x)-λ_n (x-a_n)(x-b_n)\mathcal{P}_{n-1}(x), \quad n \geq 0, \end{align*} where $λ_n$ is a positive chain sequence and $a_n$, $b_n$, $c_n$ are sequences of real or complex numbers with $\mathcal{P}_{-1}(x) = 0$ and $\mathcal{P}_0(x) = 1$ are investigated when the recurrence coefficients are perturbed. Specifically, representation of new perturbed polynomials (co-polynomials of $R_{II}$ type) in terms …
A classical result due to Bochner classifies the orthogonal polynomials on the real line which are common eigenfunctions of a second order linear differential operator. We settle a natural version of the Bochner problem on the unit circle which answers a similar question concerning orthogonal Laurent polynomials and can be formulated as a bispectral problem involving CMV matrices. We solve this CMV bispectral problem in great generality proving that, except the Lebesgue measure, no other one on the unit circle yields a sequence of orthogonal Laurent polynomials which are eigenfunctions of a li…
