Strong asymptotics of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to a weight of the form $$ W(z) = w(z) \prod_{k=1}^m |z-a_k|^{2β_k}, \quad |z|=1, \quad |a_k|=1, \quad β_k>-1/2, \quad k=1, ..., m, $$ where $w(z)>0$ for $|z|=1$ and can be extended as a holomorphic and non-vanishing function to an annulus containing the unit circle. The formulas obtained are valid uniformly in the whole complex plane. As a consequence, we obtain some results about the distribution of zeros of these polynomials, the behavior of their leading and Verblunsky coefficients, as well as give an alternative proof of the Fisher-Hartwig conjecture about the asymptotics of Toeplitz determinants for such type of weights. The main technique is the steepest descent analysis of Deift and Zhou, based on the matrix Riemann-Hilbert characterization proposed by Fokas, Its and Kitaev.
The dbar steepest descent method and the asymptotic behavior of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle with fixed and exponentially varying nonanalytic weights
We present a new explicit family of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle with a dense point spectrum. This family is expressed in terms of q-hypergeometric function of type ${_2}ϕ_1$. The orthogonality measure is the wrapped geometric distribution. Some "classical" properties of the above polynomials are presented.
In this paper we study the following family of hypergeometric polynomials: $y_n(x) = \frac{ (-1)^ρ}{ n! } x^n {}_2 F_0(-n,ρ;-;-\frac{1}{x})$, depending on a parameter $ρ\in\mathbb{N}$. Differential equations of orders $ρ+1$ and $2$ for these polynomials are given. A recurrence relation for $y_n$ is derived as well. Polynomials $y_n$ are Sobolev orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle with an explicit matrix measure.
An inifinite-dimensional representation of the double affine Hecke algebra of rank 1 and type $(C_1^{\vee},C_1)$ in which all generators are tridiagonal is presented. This representation naturally leads to two systems of polynomials that are orthogonal on the unit circle. These polynomials can be considered as circle analogs of the Askey-Wilson polynomials. The corresponding polynomials orthogonal on an interval are constructed and discussed.
In the case when the weight and its inverse belong to BMO(T), we prove the asymptotics of the monic orthogonal polynomials in L^p, 2<p<p_0. Immediate applications include the estimates on the uniform norm and asymptotics for the polynomial entropy.
The Kronecker polynomial $K(z)$ is a finite product of cyclotomic polynomials $C_j(z)$. Any Kronecker polynomial $K(z)$ of degree $N+1$ with simple roots on the unit circle generates a finite set $Φ_0=1, Φ_1(z), \dots, Φ_N(z) $ of polynomials (para) orthogonal on the unit circle (POPUC). This set is determined uniquely by the condition $Φ_N(z) = (N+1)^{-1} K'(z)$. Such set can be called the set of Sturmian Kronecker POPUC. We present several new explicit examples of such POPUC. In particular, we define and analyze properties of the Sturmian cyclotomic POPUC generated by the cyclotomic polynomi…
We consider a sequence of polynomials $\{P_n\}_{n \geq 0}$ satisfying a special $R_{II}$ type recurrence relation where the zeros of $P_n$ are simple and lie on the real line. It turns out that the polynomial $P_n$, for any $n \geq 2$, is the characteristic polynomial of a simple $n \times n$ generalized eigenvalue problem. It is shown that with this $R_{II}$ type recurrence relation one can always associate a positive measure on the unit circle. The orthogonality property satisfied by $P_n$ with respect to this measure is also obtained. Finally, examples are given to justify the results.
Let $\{f_j\}_{j=0}^n$ be a sequence of orthonormal polynomials where the orthogonality relation is satisfied on either the real line or on the unit circle. We study zero distribution of random linear combinations of the form $$P_n(z)=\sum_{j=0}^nη_jf_j(z),$$ where $η_0,\dots,η_n$ are complex-valued i.i.d.~standard Gaussian random variables. Using the Christoffel-Darboux formula, the density function for the expected number of zeros of $P_n$ in these cases takes a very simple shape. From these expressions, under the mere assumption that the orthogonal polynomials are from the Nevai class, we gi…

Given two compact sets, $E$ and $F$, on the unit circle, we study the class of subharmonic functions on the unit disk which can grow at the direction of $E$ and $F$ (sets of singularities) at different rate. The main result concerns the Blaschke-type condition for the Riesz measure of such functions. The optimal character of such condition is demonstrated.
Ramanujan's trigonometric sum $c_q(n)$ can be interpreted as a set of trigonometric moments of a finite measure concentrated at primitive $q$-th roots of unity with equal masses. This gives rise to sets of corresponding polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle. We present explicit expressions of these polynomials for special values of $q$, e.g. when $q=p$ or $q=2p$ or $q=p^k$, where $p$ is a prime number. We generalize this procedure taking the Kronecker polynomial instead of cyclotomic one. In this case the moments are expressed as finite sums of $c_q(n)$ with different $q$.
We consider properties and applications of a sequence of polynomials known as complementary Romanovski-Routh polynomials (CRR polynomials for short). These polynomials, which follow from the Romanovski-Routh polynomials or complexified Jacobi polynomials, are known to be useful objects in the studies of the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation and also the wave functions of quarks. One of the main results of this paper is to show how the CRR-polynomials are related to a special class of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. As another main result, we have established their connection to a…
M. Derevyagin, L. Vinet and A. Zhedanov introduced in Constr. Approx. 36 (2012) 513-535 a new connection between orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and the real line. It maps any real CMV matrix into a Jacobi one depending on a real parameter $λ$. These authors prove that this map yields a natural link between the Jacobi polynomials on the unit circle and the little and big $-1$ Jacobi polynomials on the real line. They also provide explicit expressions for the measure and orthogonal polynomials associated with the Jacobi matrix in terms of those related to the CMV matrix, but only for …
The sequence $\{\,_2ϕ_1(q^{-k},q^{b+1};\,q^{-\overline{b}-k+1};\, q, q^{-\overline{b}+1/2} z)\}_{k \geq 0}$ of basic hypergeometric polynomials is known to be orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to the weight function $|(q^{1/2}e^{iθ};\,q)_{\infty}/(q^{b+1/2}e^{iθ};\,q)_{\infty}|^2$. This result, where one must take the parameters $q$ and $b$ to be $0 < q < 1$ and $\Re(b) > -1/2$, is due to P.I. Pastro \cite{Pastro-1985}. In the present manuscript we deal with the orthogonal polynomials $\hatΦ_{n}(b;.)$ and $\checkΦ_{n}(b;.)$ on the unit circle with respect to the two parametric familie…
We provide a new closed form expression for the Geronimus polynomials on the unit circle and use it to obtain new results and formulas. Among our results is a universality result at an endpoint of an arc for polynomials orthogonal with respect to a Geronimus type weight on an arc of the unit circle. The key tool is a formula of McLaughlin for powers of a two-by-two matrix, which we use to derive convenient formulas for Geronimus polynomials.
The aim of this paper is to prove that Markov's theorem on variation of zeros of orthogonal polynomials on the real line [Math. Ann., 27:177-182,1886] remains essentially valid in the case of paraorthogonal polynomials on the unit circle.
